Opis:
The article describes the amount, structure and dynamics of all types of foreign investments in Russia, it means foreign direct investments, portfolio investments and so-called the others investment (mainly credits). Special attention is paid to flows of foreign investments in last two years. In 2007 they reached the highest level in the history of the country, especially in case of FDI, which play the most important role in each economy. The trend has changed during the next year, in which flows of foreign investment into Russia (altogether) declined about 14 per cent. The most sudden decrease of the investment volume happened in case of portfolio investments. Foreign investors started to pull their money out of Russian stock exchanges in August of 2008 losing a confidence in Russian securities and local market. The mains reasons were: Russia’s involvement in the armed conflict in Georgia, deterioration in economic situation in the country and global financial crisis.

Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The subject of analysis and evaluation are foreign direct investments (FDI) in Poland with particular emphasis on the Lublin Voivodship as a peripheral region. The aim of the paper is to present the investment attractiveness of the voivodship, the state of investment and ways to enhance the investment attractiveness of the region. Materials and methods: This paper is based on statistical data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS), the National Bank of Poland (NBP) and other institutions, as well as published literature of this topic. Results: This paper presents theoretical foundations of foreign investments, characteristics of the inflow of foreign direct investments to Poland in the years 2000-2017, their origin and directions of their use and distribution in the country. FDI is presented in detail in Lublin Voivodship, which is considered to be a peripheral region of Poland and the European Union. Conclusions: FDI inflow to Poland was uneven in time, and investments were concentrated in the Masovian Voivodship and a few other voivodships of Western and Central Poland. Lublin Voivodship, despite activities increasing its investment attractiveness, still has unused opportunities for application of foreign investments.

Research background: In existing studies two main channels of international technology spillovers are extensively discussed — trade and FDI. Nevertheless empirical studies give mixed results regards the nature and extent of trade and FDI spillovers. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to study import and foreign direct investments (FDI) as channels of international TFP spillovers. Methods: We employ dynamic spatial autoregression (SAR) methods. Our panel comprises data for 41 developed and upper mid-developed countries over the period 1995-2014. Findings & Value added: Our preliminary results show that (1) the trade and investment channels are both important for technology transfer, (2) the degree of their significance depends on the absorptive capacity such as good quality of the institutions.

Opis:
The article raises the issue of the relations between foreign direct investment and exports, quoting the example of Poland. Most of the research done so far raises the issue of substitutability and complementarity of these phenomena. In their research of macroeconomic nature, authors such as Stehn, Stępniak and Markusen (Stępniak, 2005; Markusen et al, 1996) have proved that definitely in most cases we are dealing with complementarity of FDI in relation to foreign trade of the countries. Using the most up-to-date research regarding foreign investment (Melitz, 2003; Krugman), in this article I am trying to present FDI as that element of economic life that stabilizes exports, taking into account today’s context related to the economic crisis. Referring already in the first part to the research done also in Poland by the National Bank of Poland, I have presented FDI as a factor maintaining Poland’s exports on a high level despite temporary capital outflow. The inflow of capital in the form of FDI to Poland is done in particular by companies from developed countries that are first of all looking for a location to move their own operations and reduce costs. Secondly, Poland is attractive as a location because of the availability of large markets. On the one hand, by operating in Poland, being an EU member, they get access to the EU internal market, while on the other they get close to the Russian market. Consequently, in their strategy for internationalizing their operations, investors making a capital involvement are planning to carry out their export operations dynamically.

This article explores the activities of regional investor service centres (RCOIs), which were established through a 2004–2005 initiative by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ). The centres were placed in 16 voivodeships to support the inflow of foreign direct investment into Polish regions. In the first section, the authors present an overview of RCOIs: their history, scope of activities, and cooperation with PAIiIZ. Next, results of a January 2015 survey of all 16 RCOIs are discussed. The article concludes by briefly describing three examples of initiatives launched by the centres to illustrate their activities. These include increasing the regional pool of employees with skills sought by investing entrepreneurs, aftercare and building linkages with existing investors, and support for Polish local government units (gminas) to develop and promote their new investment offers.

Opis:
Jeśli chodzi o wartość japońskich bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych, zaczęła ona dynamicznie rosnąć od połowy lat 80. i trend wzrostowy trwa do dziś. Kumulacja nastąpiła w 2008 roku, kiedy roczna wartość strumienia przekroczyła 130 mld dolarów. Warto zwrócić uwagę, iż w okresach recesyjnych - lata 90., światowy kryzys finansowy po 2008 roku - wartość japońskich inwestycji bezpośrednich ulegała znaczącym wahaniom. W latach 70. kapitał japoński płynął z porównywalną siłą do krajów azjatyckich i do USA.
This article aims to analyze the causes, value and directions of the Japanese outward foreign direct investments. Transnational corporations investing abroad are looking for: resources, new markets, the efficiency as well as for the strategic advantage. In an economic theory, the reasons of investing abroad were explained - among others - by J.H. Dunning in his OLI (ownership, localization, internalization) paradigm. The more advantage of ownership (O) the corporation has, a bigger incentive it has to internalize (I) it and to utilize it by the appropriate location (L), hence it is more likely to engage in investing abroad. There were several reasons to invest abroad by Japan and they changed over time. These included: the strong appreciation of the yen against the US dollar, the high rate of growth of real wages in Japan, the Japan's trade surplus, which caused the pressure of foreign partners to reduce exports and undertake the production in their countries, the abundance of capital in the domestic market (a high level of internal savings), the low level of real interest rates (little interest in capital investment on local market), and finally the search for less expensive production sites. When it comes to the value of Japanese foreign direct investments, it began to grow rapidly since the mid-80s, and the trend continues till today. The pick occurred in 2008, when the annual value of the stream exceeded 130 bln US dollars. It is worth noting that during recessions - in the 90s or during the global financial crisis after 2008 - the value of Japanese foreign direct investments fluctuated substantially. In the 70s, the Japanese capital was located equally in Asian countries and in the United States. In the 80s the main collector of the Japanese FDI's were the United States, and then the European countries as a second biggest destination. After 2005, the Asian countries have become the leading region of Japanese FDI's location, and China occupies the leading position among them.

The study concluded that increase in foreign direct investment (F.D.I.) is optimistic move for the future of Indian Life Insurance Sector, since this sector need huge amount of capital investment which can be done effectively only through increase in FDI and it enhance overall performance of insurance sector. Innovative insurance product and services, better use of technology, increase in employment and competition etc. are by-product of increase in F.D.I in insurance Sector. Government of India through Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (I.R.D.A.I.) and Reserve Bank of India (R.B.I.) need to keep regular check on the outflow of India currency. India is growing economy and many consider it an attractive country for investment in mainly to its fast growing and changing insurance market. Indian insurance industry is still less penetrated and has huge growth potential. Foreign direct investment (F.D.I.) plays significant role in the economic development of the country. This study is based on secondary data collected from I.R.D.A and research papers from various journals.

The quality of institutions is important for economic growth and inflow of foreign direct investment. Business environment institutions may introduce certain adaptations of the conditions as a response to foreign investors’ expectations. The main objective of the research was to evaluate business environment institu-tions, exemplified herein by Investor Service Centres, in terms of their active par-ticipation in the process of attracting foreign investors. The empirical investigation (using questionnaire forms, carried out in the first half of 2013) was completed by employees of 10 centres (62.5%). COI employees use most of the available sources of information about foreign investors. COIs are very active in their information search, and do not resort to the simplest possibilities, for example the Internet. Foreign investors contacted offices having previously found relevant information about chosen investment locations. COIs actively cooperate with other institutions in order to attract foreign investors. They undertake various activities to reach this aim, most of which demand a high degree of engagement. Most often COI employees promoted available investment sites themselves rather than delegate this task to agencies. In order to improve the efficiency of COIs, they should strive towards building relationships between institutions.

China’s involvement in Africa has become one of the contentious topics in the development literature. The background of the study is that china-African relations can be grouped into dual phases thus: past relations and contemporary relations. Those phases are dissimilar, as past relations are categorized by solidarity against imperial-ism, while contemporary relations are characterized by economic relations. The study used a historical approach to analyze China’s resurgence into Africa and Ethiopia, a case study is used to examine the contemporary china-African relations. Secondary data were utilized to come to sound conclusion of the study. The study mainly found out that China’s resurgence into Africa presents both negative and positive impacts for Africa and that the negatives need to be regulated in order for African countries to benefit from the relations.
W badaniu wykorzystano historyczne podejście do analizy odrodzenia Chin w Afryce i Etiopii, studium przypadku jest wykorzystywane do zbadania współczesnych stosunków Chiny - Afryka. Wykorzystano dane wtórne, aby dojść do rzetelnego zakończenia badania.

The research presented a financial approach to an issue of estimation of efficiency of the Polish foreign direct investments abroad (FDIA) as an instrument of value creation for investors. Besides the volume and distribution of Polish FDIA according to economic activity and geographical zone were analyzed. The volume of Polish FDIA outward position constantly grew due to an increase of equity capital, reinvested earnings and other capital in 2000-2012. The period after financial crisis (2010-2012) was characterized by a higher activity of Polish investors while the fluctuation of income from FDIA was mainly caused by a significant level of their concentration. Government bond yields were higher than return on FDIA that gave an evidence of relatively lower efficiency of FDIA.

Aim/purpose - This paper surveys three decades of empirical literature on foreign direct investment (FDI) and international trade across the former Soviet economic space. In this survey, we outline the current state of research, discuss data limitations, and identify topics for further studies. Design/methodology/approach - The methodology used in this study is a systematic literature review. Multiple databases were searched, including Google Scholar, IDEAS (RePEc), JSTOR, Web of Science, and others. In total, 59 papers published between 1990 and 2023 were analyzed. Findings - Our findings are severalfold. First, we highlight severe data collection problems related to foreign equity and trade outside the Baltics, Ukraine, Russia, and some Central Asian Republics (CARs). As a result, we point out the limited availability of studies that use contemporary data and cover important economic events, such as the European accession of the Baltics, the formation of new preferential trade agreements, and economic re-integration centered around Russia, and Ukraine's political stability. Research implications/limitations - This study should assist researchers in identifying prospective research directions in postcommunist economic research. The main limitations of this survey are i) the total number of papers surveyed (59), ii) the focus on empirical studies, and iii) the specific geographical area considered. Originality/value/contribution - Despite the critical role of FDI and trade in transitional economies, plenty of relevant topics have remained undiscovered (e.g., the relationship between outward FDI and profit shifting). To the best of our knowledge, no systematic survey has been done on these two areas of research.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) plays an extraordinary and growing role in global business. It can provide a firm with new markets and marketing channels, cheaper production facilities, access to new technology, products, skills and financing. For a host country or the foreign firm which receives the investment, it can provide a source of new technologies, capital, processes, products, organizational technologies and management skills and as such can provide a strong impetus to economic development. The sea change in trade and investment policies and the regulatory environment globally in the past decade, including trade policy and tariff liberalization, easing of restrictions on foreign investment and acquisition in many nations, and the deregulation and privatization of many industries, has probably been the most significant catalyst for FDI’s expanded role.
