Opis:
Although there appear nowadays new approaches to viewing the region, the fundamental role in its creation should be that of the cultural environment. However, are the elements of the local tradition known and, moreover, used in promoting a particular area? Observations and analysis of the geographically isolated Kłodzko region proven that its cultural environment used to be very explicit and rich. Today the most specific feature of this area is the outline of the buildings and settlements-their forms and architectural details - harmoniously placed in the countryside. The fact that the tower on Śnieżnik mountain was closed and the characteristic plant - European Globeflower (Trollius europaeus) - is almost unknown to the local communities, shows that the development of the area ceased to be conducted according to the historically established symbols. Moreover - in the wake of the recent transformations, traditional farming is not able to sustain the rural economy as it once has done, leaving many agricultural buildings empty and decaying. Making use of former agricultural buildings can create very attractive spaces that can be put to commercial use, without detracting from the surrounding environment. The means to maintain the cultural value of the region is to preserve the traditional style of the existing houses and to develop the new buildings according to the regional features of architecture. It is also important to educate the local community and make it aware of the role of its tradition, especially if the tourism plays the main role in the local plans of social and economical development.

Opis:
Among the numerous interesting and remarkable topics of applied law related to the period between the two World Wars, this study focuses on a very special aspect of judicial practice of that time. It attempts to trace archaic standards, legal folk traditions, as reflected by court decisions or brought up by the parties during the litigation process. Based on this approach, studies and case-studies published in a Hungarian ethnographical journal, Ethnographia, were re-evaluated in order to exploit a rich historical source and extract interesting legal historical information that had not been directly expressed before.

the Warzyńcowe Hudy, folk custom, the Beskid Żywiecki region
Opis:
Origin of the Warzyńcowe Hudy folk custom in the Beskid Żywiecki regionWawrzyńcowe Hudy is a folk custom associated with bonfires. It is performed in the southwestern part of the Beskid Żywiecki mountain region of Poland. The custom’s name is associated with St. Laurence, the patron saint of a local parish. The core of the ceremony consists of setting a “ huda ” structure on fire. A huda is an appropriately built and decorated wooden bonfire, around which dances and chanting are held. The meaning of the core custom includes several elements common in the Beskid highlander’s ceremonial customs, such as an assurance of agricultural abundance, strengthening of the Sun’s benevolent power, as well as the preservation of one’s farm from all types of evil forces. The paper describes two most probable hypotheses concerning the origin of the Wawrzyńcowe Hudy custom. The first hypothesis states that this custom had evolved from a magical rite that was believed to repel plague and other disasters that had visited the study area in the past. The link between this custom and St. Wawrzyniec, as an element of the Christianization of local communities, has become the basis for the annual performance of this particular ritual. The second hypothesis presumes the existence of a shepherd’s or agricultural holiday held in the middle of summer, which was probably linked with the culmination of some part of work in agricultural fields or grasslands. For this holiday, common magical rites were combined with agriculture. Later, the custom was moved to the feast of the local patron saint.

Opis:
The extent of evangelisation of popular religiosity has been astonishing in its effectiveness for centuries. Folk customs entered into the church ceremonial through centuries also became elements of identity of individual societies. The long process of the existence of episcopal power in Warmia (1243 - 1772) meant that local folk ceremonial was able to preserve numerous customs over a long period of time in later times. For researchers of this problem, signs collected until the middle of the 20th century form an interesting basis for describing as well as analysing the power of folk religiosity.

Opis:
A longstanding folk tradition among rural Russian peasants, ulichnye familii (‘street surnames’) were used by Doukhobors colloquially ‘on the street’ of a village to distinguish among families sharing the same official surname. Similar to Quebecois dit names and Scottish sept names, ulichnye familii arose because of the low surname stock within Doukhobor society. Passed down to succeeding generations and transferred between settlements, these names became a recognized form of address among Doukhobors, helping structure kinship networks and organize social interactions among villagers. When a large contingent of Doukhobors emigrated from the Caucasus to the Canadian prairies in 1899, they continued this naming practice in their settlements well into the early 20th century. A ubiquitous part of their culture for generations, today ulichnye familii have all but disappeared among Doukhobors, as a result of their assimilation, dispersal and modernization. This article offers an analysis of the Doukhobor anthroponymic custom of ulichnye familii: the social factors leading to their adoption; the etymological processes through which these names were formed; the manner in which they were used and transmitted; and the elements contributing to their eventual decline and disuse. It also includes an inventory of extant ulichnye familii among the Doukhobors of the Caucasus and Canada, obtained through extensive field interviews and archival research.
