Opis:
The branch of fitness services in Poland experiences an intensive development currently. Annual branch analyses indicate an increase of revenues from this sector as well as the higher number of participants of sport and recreation activities at fitness clubs. Due to available data evidencing the development of the branch of private sport and recreation services, the authors decided to analyse and discuss the dynamics of the fitness market in Poland. The authors determined the size and potential of this market in Poland in relation to other fitness markets in Europe. The desk research technique was used. Sources of information about the fitness market were national publications of statistical data and branch reports. Analysis results show that the Polish market is one of leading in Europe. What is more, Polish market of fitness clubs is fragmented and there are active many small organisations. The authors state that it seems that it is necessary to introduce systematic deepened research on the fitness branch in Poland, which has a significant development potential.

The aim of this study is to evaluate validity and reliability of a new special kickboxing fitness test. The test can be also useful in such combat sports as karate, taekwondo, ju-jitsu and MMA. The study group was 25 elite level athletes from the KS Gladiator club in Grybów. The test was repeated in the same group for three times. In order to evaluate test reliability, test results were compared to the results obtained by study participants in two special fitness tests proposed by Sterkowicz1 . The statistical analysis of the results was also performed. The analysis of the results presented in this study shows that the specific character of the movements typical of the kickboxing fight justifies the introduction of the tests based on kicks and punches to the test battery that evaluates special fitness. Furthermore, the new special fitness test proposed in this study can be used for selection and interpretation of the achievements of kickboxers since it offers a reliable, valid and user-friendly research tool.

Opis:
Introduction: The expected effect of rehabilitation after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the restoration of the patients’ functional fitness. However, the absence of a method for a functional assessment of the patients’ condition both immediately after the procedure and after rehabilitation makes it impossible to precisely evaluate patients’ improvement. The aim of the present study is an attempt to use selected items of the Senior Fitness Test to evaluate the functional fitness of patients who have undergone CABG after an early stage of cardiac rehabilitation in sanatorium conditions as a measure of the effects of rehabilitation.Research project: Before/after testingMaterial and methods: Thirty men aged 60 to 78 (mean age 68.6 ±6.2 years) undertaking early cardiac rehabilitation in a spa hospital (a 21-day stay) after CABG were subject to two-stage testing. The first set of tests was conducted at the beginning of their stay (on average 18 days after the surgery), and the second set was conducted during the last days of their stay at the spa hospital (on average 39 days after the surgery). In both sets of tests, the following items of the Senior Fitness Test were applied: the lower body strength test, the complex coordination test, and the 2-minute Step-in-Place test. Results: After 21 days of observation, the patients significantly improved their results in the lower body strength test (p<0.001), the complex coordination test (p<0.001) and the 2-minute Step-in-Place test (p<0.001). Additionally, a significant decrease in heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressure before and after the 2-minute Step-in-Place test was observed. Conclusions: Post-CABG patients, having undergone therapy at an early post-hospital stage, significantly improved their functional fitness. The application of the selected Fullerton Test items showed the possibility of using a functional fitness evaluation in this group of patients as a measure of the effects of the therapy.
W obu badaniach zastosowano wybrane próby Senior Fitness Test: siły dolnej części ciała, ocenę koordynacji złożonej i próbę 2-minutowego marszu w miejscu. Wyniki: Po 21 dniach obserwacji pacjenci istotnie poprawili wynik próby siły dolnej części ciała (p<0,001), próbę koordynacji złożonej (p<0,001) i próbę marszu 2-minutowego w miejscu (p<0,001).

The aim of the research was to establish the motor efficiency of boys between the ages of 7 and 10 years, attending Grades 1-4 of music oriented and general education classes. The research material included 106 boys aged 7-10 of the Primary School Complex No. 2 in Szczecin. There were 50 children examined in the music oriented classes, and 56 in control group. The research was conducted twice in the school year 2006/2007, including the same research material – first in September 2006, second in June 2007 accordingly. To evaluate the level of motor skills the EUROFIT European Fitness Test was used. Test results were statistically analyzed. The Utenberger’s test resulted in statistically significant better results of boys from the Grade 1 of control group (C) compared to their peers from Grade 1 of music oriented classes. In research II, only boys of Grades 1-2 M had statistically significant results improvement in the Utenberger’s test in comparison with research I. In research II, male students of Grades 1, 2, 3 M acquired statistically significant better results in the speed test of the upper limb than their peers of Grades 1 C, 2 C, 4 C. Moreover, in study II the subjected individuals of Grades 1 M, 2 M, 4 M and 4 C obtained statistically significant increase in their results in comparison with study I. Trunk flexibility of male students from music-oriented classes and control group was in line; the same was true for the jump test. In study II, trunk flexibility and endurance in jumping insignificantly improved in all examined classes. In the study, boys from Grade 4 M, obtained statistically more significant average hand strength results compared to their peers from Grade 4 C. In study II, boys from Grades 1 and 2 M obtained statistically significantly lower average values in this test in comparison with boys from Grades 1 and 2 C. In study II, unlike in study 1, there was a statistically significant improvement in the test results only in boys from Grades 3 and 4 M. In contrary, there was a statistically significant improvement of hand strength results in all grades of control groups compared to study I. In trunk flexibility test, boys from Grade 1 M had statistically lower mean values than boys from Grade 1 C. In the same study, boys from grades 3 and 4 M had statistically significantly higher average values than their peers from Grades 3 and 4 C. In study II, statistically significant differences were found between Grades 3 M and 3 P as well as between 4 M and 4 P. In study II, in Grades 1 C and 2 M, there was a statistically significant results improvement compared to study I. Functional capacity of boys from all subjected classes was similar in both studies. In study II, statistically significant improvement in this test was found only in Grade 2 M. In agility fitness test, in study II, boys from Grade 4 M had statistically significantly better results opposed to Grade 4 C. It turned out that boys from grades 1 M, 2 M, and 3 C, had statistically significant results improvement in study II compared to study I. Based on the conducted studies, the following conclusions have been formulated: 1. Motor efficiency of boys from music-oriented as well as control classes was comparable. 2. Practicing musical instruments at the early education stage did not have any significant influence on the general motor efficiency of male pupils. 3. As part of preventive measures of degenerative overload changes of the motor system in music-oriented classes, the national curriculum program of study for PE should be modified and supplemented with exercises strengthening trunk muscles and increasing the range of motion in the shoulder and pelvic girdles.

The 21st century is the epoch of taking care of one’s appearance, healthy lifestyle and improving the quality of life. “Body cult” has become a global trend, and prohealth behaviors have come to be treated as a new lifestyle, which consists in resignation of traditional forms of spend-ing free time with friends, in favour of isolated and individualised time management outside work. The modern prohealth lifestyle subsequently results in development of the market associ-ated with the sports and recreational industry, including fitness clubs and gyms. The objective of the article is an assessment of fitness clubs and gyms in the city of Krakow. The first part describes the “health industry”. The lifestyle is characterized in the second one. The third one presents Krakow as a city that is constantly developing, and the fourth part lists the offer of services available to residents of Krakow in selected fitness clubs and gyms.
XXI wiek to epoka dbania o wygląd, starania o zdrowy tryb życia i poprawę jakości życia.

Opis:
Problem Statement. Becoming widespread and extremely popular with people throughout the world fitness has not left Ukraine, where there is a keen interest to this kind of recreational activities, aside. The Purpose was to study the origin of recreational fitness. Results: The article highlights the origins and genesis of health-related fitness in its international context, as well as in individual countries of the world. Particular attention has been paid to the development of recreational fitness in Ukraine and to the establishment of the Ukrainian market of fitness services, which originated in the late 90s. A rapid booming of fitness industry has been observed in Ukraine since 2005. The authors also deal with contemporary development of fitness services. At the same time the issue of terminological application has been tackled. Various publications put different interpretations fitness terminological system in general and of the term “fitness” as well. Although fitness as a health-improving system has been gradually evolving, the commonly accepted meaning of the term has not been elaborated up till now. Various definitions of the term should be considered as complementary. Conclusions. Fitness has a long history and different versions of origin and evolution. Two of them are considered to be of significance, i.e. the western and the eastern versions. For ideological reasons, fitness in the Soviet Union(Ukraine being part of it until1991)was practically ignored. Nevertheless, the mid-80s of the last century witnessed the breakthrough of fitness into the USSR. Establishment of the market of fitness services in the independent Ukraine started in the late 90s. Fitness industry in Ukraine ispermanently growing.

Opis:
Flexibility is one of the elements – components which support physical fitness and health as well (Howley, Franks, 1997; Bouchard, Shephard, 1994; Skinner, Oja, 1994). The purpose of this paper was to assess the impact of additional flexibility exercises on physical fitness in lower secondary school students, evaluated by means of IPFT (the International Physical Fitness Test). The study was conducted in two experimental groups, where extra flexibility exercises were added to all obligatory PE lessons, and one control group. 1. The decreased standard deviation observed in particular IPFT attempts in the experimental class is the correct tendency showing the favorable influence of flexibility exercises on students’ physical fitness and health. 2. An improvement and considerably better, though statistically insignificant, results were obtained by the students involved in the additional exercises, in all assessed motor skills (strength, speed, endurance and flexibility) and in the scoring reflecting the level of physical fitness. 3. After one year of exercises the control group had worse average results in two attempts – 50 m run (to assess speed) and standing forward bend (to measure flexibility). This trend indicates the importance of flexibility exercises as regards speed and agility.

Background. Today’s pursuit of high socio-economic status predisposes to low physical activity. Health promotion has an impact on propagating fitness clubs and active lifestyle. The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between fitness clubs popularization and the physical activity of Upper Silesian inhabitants. Material and methods. There were 200 questionnaires distributed among people aged 19–64 years; 150 respondents provided feedback for further analysis. The inclusion criterion was active participation in fitness club activities in Upper Silesia and Cieszyn Silesia. The data were collected by means of the authors’ own questionnaire. Results and conclusions. The main media factor influencing the popularity of fitness clubs was web advertising. Gym and group activities turned out the most common forms of exercise. The large age span of the study group indicated a growing interest in physical activity not only among young people. Most respondents noted a positive effect of regular exercise on their well-being and health.
Cel badań. Ustalenie związku między popularyzacją fitness clubów a aktywnością fizyczną mieszkańców Górnego Śląska. Materiał i metody. Osobom w wieku 19–64 lat rozdano 200 ankiet. Wyniki i wnioski.

The aim of the present review is to investigate the main field-based tests, used alone or included in sport or fitness batteries, for the assessment of health- and skill-related physical fitness components in adolescents. Different scientific databases were searched through using the selected key words related to physical fitness and its components for adolescence. The search focused on original articles and reviews/meta-analyses using valid, reproducible and feasible tests that fit within the school environment. A total of 100 scientific manuscripts were included in the qualitative synthesis. The present systematic review pointed out 5 fitness tests that well adapt to the evaluation of the components of physical fitness of adolescents within a school environment: the 20 m shuttle run test for cardio-respiratory endurance; the handgrip strength test for upper body maximal strength; the standing broad jump test for lower body maximal strength; the sit-up test to exhaustion for muscular endurance and the 4×10 m shuttle run test for speed, agility and coordination. These fitness tests have been finally selected and incorporated into the Adolescents and Surveillance System for the Obesity prevention – Fitness Test Battery (ASSO-FTB), and will be adopted within the ASSO Project for evaluation purposes. This instrument could be also provided to teachers and people working in schools in order to assess physical fitness of adolescents over time and prevent obesity and related diseases.

This paper reports 2 baseline studies and 1 experiment performed in a confined-space military vehicle concerning the effects on fitness and performance of time in a sitting posture and workstation characteristics. On average physical fitness decreased by slightly more than 10% per hour, the observation performance decreased by ~30% per hour, and the technical performance (of gunners) showed a relatively small decrease, i.e., less than 5% per hour. So-called active breaks (changing sitting into standing and walking) led to a significant reduction in the decrease of physical fitness, almost reducing it to zero. Furthermore, the level of confinement was shown to affect physical fitness.

Physical and special physical fitness of first and second year students which go in for boxing in the process of their physical training during one and two years, respectively, is defined here. The research involved 108 students: 54 students from first year and 54 students from second year, which were tested during the year (at the beginning and at the end). The following types of testing were used: standing long jump, lying dip up for 20 sec and 1 min, speed – 100 m running, endurance – running 3000 m, rope jumping (quantity per 1 min) and special physical fitness was determined by maximum quantity of left and right punches during 15 sec. There positive dynamics and growth of all physical fitness indicators of students who went in for boxing during the first year was defined. The students who went in for boxing for the second year showed better results and their dynamics (in addition to indicators of 100 m running speed).

Opis:
Purpose: An analysis was conducted regarding fitness trainers’ opinions on factors related to the profitability of rendered services. Answers to two research questions were sought: a) Is it possible to group respondents based on their opinions on the level of satisfaction from the achieved revenue and the profit margin on a standard service? b) Is there a relationship between respondents’ assignment to a specific group and the fact of conducting an additional business activity (not related to the fitness sector)? Design/methodology/approach: The study was based on the use of a structured questionnaire. The five-point scale and nominal variants of answers were used for the quantitative analysis of collected data. With regard to the nature of the surveyed subjects, non-representative sampling in the form of a snowball method was used. Findings: The results obtained reveal that, among trainers expressing satisfaction from the achieved revenue and the profit margin on a standard service, dominates the group of those, who do not conduct additional business activity and, conversely, among trainers expressing indecision and lack of satisfaction dominates the group of persons, who conduct such business activity. Research limitations/implications: The main research limitation derives from the sampling method – findings cannot be generalized on the whole population of fitness trainers. However, the obtained results shed new light on the conditions of conducting business activity by fitness trainers and formulate further research questions. Originality/value: Fitness trainers (especially those who conduct business activity) are not a popular topic of scientific work in this industry (the subject of fitness clubs dominates).

Opis:
Ventilatory threshold is one of the ways to measure cardiovasculatory fitness of the body. Therefore, in the present study it was decided to demonstrate which physiological parameters most accurately express the second ventilatory threshold (VAT2) depending on the cardiovasculatory fitness of different groups of athletes and untrained men. The study involved the following athletes: race walkers (n=14), weightlifters (n=16), powerlifters (n=16), runners (n=14), professional soccer players (n=13), amateur soccer players (n=16), martial arts (n=12), and untrained men (n=15). Subjects’ VAT2 and maximal load (ML) were recorded and at these levels were determined the value of achievable maximal power (P), oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), the ratio for oxygen uptake and heart rate (VO2/HR) and the rate-pressure produkt (RPP). It was shown that subjects were of similar age but different body mass (BM) and BMI. There were also differences between athlete groups at VAT2 and ML in relation to: P, VO2, VO2/HR (p<0.001) and RPP only at VAT2 (p<0.023). Reached HR values at VAT2 as well as at ML have not differed between the groups. There were also intergroup differences at VAT2 in terms of relative values: %VO2max (p<0.002), %Pmax(p<0.016), %VO2max/%HRmax (p<0.03). Relatively expressed %HRmax and %RPPmax reached at VAT2 did not differ between the two groups. Runners, professional soccer players and race walkers achieved the most favorable indicators of physical performance. It has been demonstrated that VAT2 besides P i %Pmax was best described by VO2, %VO2max and by VO2/HR and %VO2max/%HRmax, as well as by RPP. On the other hand HR and %HRmax, as well as %RPPmax are not useful in this regard. Furthermore it should be recognized that athletes in whose structure of the training occurred running of varying intensity achieved the highest physical fitness.

The aim of this pilot study was to determine (a) the effects of high intensity strength training in the workplace on blood pressure, fat percentage and physical fitness in overweight adults, and (b) the influence of this intervention on the blood pressure in a subsample of hypertensive subjects. Overweight adults (n=15) aged 42.8 years underwent anthropometric assessment (weight, fat percentage, waist circumference, and triceps skinfold), physical fitness assessment (leg extensor power, upper body endurance, hand grip strength and Vo2max) and blood pressure assessment before and after 8 weeks of high intensity resistance training in the workplace. Each training session consisted of 16 sets of 45 repetitions performed at 1 repetition per second, decreasing load at the point of muscular failure starting at 60% of repetition maximum (RM). The effects of the intervention were analyzed by paired sample t-tests. For exploratory purposes, a non-parametric test was also performed (Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank) to examine if this decision could affect the results. Weight, body fat percentage, and triceps skinfold decreased significantly with the high intensity resistance training protocol in the workplace (all P<0.05). Performance in physical fitness tests increased significantly with training (all P<0.05), except for handgrip strength. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly with R-HIRT in the workplace (all P <0.05) in hypertensive subjects (n=10). This protocol performed in the workplace in this pilot study produces health and fitness benefits in overweight and hypertensive people.

Introduction. Research results indicate that a low level of physical fitness is associated with a high percentage of fat in the body and low levels of physical activity. The aim of this work was to assess the relationships between selected morphological indicators, and the level of aerobic capacity in adolescents attending the schools with team sports. Material and methods. The studies covered students participating in sports in middle school and high school; the study group included 90 boys aged 13-19 years. Body height and weight were measured as well as waist and hip circumference. Body weight components were assessed by using a Tanita Body Composition Analyzer. A Fitnessgram® test battery was used to assess physical fitness. Results. Research results indicates systematic increase of somatic characteristics such as weight, body height and waist and hips circuits with age. Taking into account the results obtained with the PACER test indicate a very good aerobic capacity of tested boys. Conclusions. Age is a factor that improves motor fitness of physically active adolescents. There is no linear relationship between BMI and fitness among the boys who regularly train team sports, but both lower and higher BMI values seem to be connected with lower physical fitness

The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in heart rate recovery (HRr) in trained and untrained adults, while assessing the role of physiological and emotional factors. Eighteen untrained and 21 trained participants completed a maximal exercise test and a 20-min treadmill exercise at 55–70% heart rate reserve, and emotional state was assessed prior to exercise. Multiple regression was used to assess relationships between heart rate recovery and physiological and emotional assessments. The trained group had a higher relative maximal oxygen consumption (p < 0.001), lower resting heart rate (p < 0.001), and faster short- and long-term heart rate recovery (p < 0.05) than the untrained group. Resting heart rate was the most predictive measure with HRr for the trained group (R = 0.551–0.818), whereas resting heart rate, maximal heart rate, and fitness were predictors of recovery in the untrained group (R = 0.764–0.977). The results show the predominant parasympathetic influence on HRr in the trained group, but indicates influence of fitness and exercise intensity on recovery in the untrained group. Thus, fitness appears to influence HRr in those only with low fitness. This notion may help influence the behavior of untrained individuals to improve fitness to reduce risk of mortality and morbidity.

Cel pracy. Celem badań była analiza zależności między poczuciem własnej uogólnionej skuteczności a częstością konsumpcji wybranych produktów spożywczych w grupie młodych kobiet rekreacyjnie uprawiających fitness. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 200 młodych kobiet (25–35 lat), regularnie podejmujących rekreacyjną aktywność fizyczną w małopolskich klubach fitness. Zastosowano autorski kwestionariusz częstości spożywania produktów i Skalę Własnej Uogólnionej Skuteczności (GSES) Schwarzera i wsp. Analizę wyników przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem testu U Manna-Whitneya i współczynników korelacji rangowych Spearmana w pakiecie statystycznym PQStat ver. 1.6. Wyniki. Analiza statystyczna wykazała, że wraz ze wzrostem poczucia skuteczności kobiet wrastała częstość spożywania pieczywa razowego (p<0,01), ryżu i makaronu razowego (p<0,001), nasion strączkowych (p<0,05), mlecznych przetworów fermentowanych (p<0,05), ryb (p<0,01), owoców morza (p<0,05), mięsa (p<0,05) i soków warzywnych (p<0,05). Porównanie średniej częstości konsumpcji produktów spożywczych w zależności od poziomu skuteczności dowiodło, że kobiety o wysokim jej nasileniu istotnie częściej spożywały pieczywo razowe (p<0,05), ryż i makaron razowy (p<0,001), sery twarogowe o obniżonej zawartości tłuszczu (p<0,01), owoce morza (p<0,05), oliwę z oliwek (p<0,05), soki warzywne (p<0,05), napoje słodkie (p<0,05) i wodę mineralną (p<0,05), a istotnie rzadziej pieczywo jasne (p<0,05) niż kobiety o niższej samoskuteczności. Wnioski. Wykazano predykcyjną rolę poczucia własnej uogólnionej skuteczności w odniesieniu do jakościowych aspektów sposobu żywienia młodych aktywnych fizycznie kobiet, ze wskazaniem na bardziej racjonalne wybory żywieniowe kobiet o wyższym jej nasileniu.
Introduction. Recreational physical activity and rational diet are conducive to the improvement of human health, and are determined by various factors, including the personality traits of an individual. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between the sense of generalized self-efficacy and the frequency of consumption of selected food products in a group of young women who engage in fitness for recreational purposes. Materials and method. The study involved 200 young women (aged 25–35) who regularly undertake recreational physical activity in fitness clubs in the Małopolskie Voivodeship, conducted using a questionnaire designed by the author to measure the frequency of products consumption, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) by Schwarzer et al. The results were analyzed with the use of U Mann-Whitney test and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients in statistical package PQStat ver. 1.6. Results. Statistical analysis showed that an increase in the sense of generalized self-efficacy of the studied women was accompanied by an increase in the frequency of consumption of whole meal bread (p<0.01), whole-grain rice and pasta (p<0.001), legumes (p<0.05), fermented milk products (p<0.05), fish (p<0.01), seafood (p<0.05), meat (p<0.05) and vegetable juices (p<0.05). Comparison of the mean frequency of consumption of certain foodstuffs with the self-efficacy level showed that women with high self-efficacy significantly more often consumed whole meal bread (p<0.05), whole-grain rice and pasta (p<0.001), light curd cheese (p<0.01), seafood (p<0.05), olive oil (p<0.05), vegetable juices (p<0.05), sweet drinks (p<0.05) and mineral water (p<0.05), and they significantly less often ate white bread (p<0.05) than women with lower self-efficacy. Conclusions. The study proved the predictive role of the sense of general self-efficacy with regard to quality aspects of diet of young, physically active women, indicating more rational dietary choices of women with higher levels of self-efficacy.
