Opis:
The ultrastructural characteristics of the sporogenesis of Myxobolus, which infect the brachial arches of Mugil cephalus, is presented. The prevalence of infection was 52.7%. The ultrastructural features of the Myxobolus species studied in general comply with known features of this genus. Based on the ultrastructural morphology and specificity to the host organ, we conclude that this species is Myxobolus ichkeulensis (Bahri and Marques 1996).

Opis:
Uronema marinum is a cosmopolitan marine ciliate. It is a facultative parasite and the main causative agent of outbreaks of scuticociliatosis in aquaculture fish. This study reports a method for the axenic cultivation of U. marinum in high densities in an artificial medium comprising proteose peptone, glucose and yeast extract powder as its basic components. The absence of bacteria in the cultures was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy of DAPI-stained samples and the failure to recover bacterial SSU-rDNA using standard PCR methods. Using this axenic medium, a maximum cell density of 420,000 ciliate cells/ml was achieved, which is significantly higher than in cultures using living bacteria as food or in other axenic media reported previously. This method for high-density axenic cultivation of U. marinum should facilitate future research on this economically important facultative fish parasite.

Alien species are now found all over the world. New fish parasites have been unintentionally introduced with infected alien fish imported for aquaculture or have sometimes spread with their intermediate invertebrate hosts transported in the ballast waters of ships. Four alien fish parasites have been recorded in Polish coastal lakes and lagoons, all parasitising eels. Three were introduced with the final host – the Japanese eel – introduced for aquaculture (Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae and Pseudodactylogyrus bini) and one (Paratenuisentis ambiguus) with its sole intermediate host (Gammarus tigrinus).

Opis:
Background. Parasitological surveys of freshwater fishes rarely include comparisons between two ecologically different bodies of water. Such studies might help to understand processes of establishment of parasite faunas in estuary areas. The results obtained could also provide useful tools for discriminating various fish populations based on the composition of their parasite faunas. The present authors attempted to study such data from Resko Lake-a freshwater coastal lagoon (6 km? surface area), and the adjacent areas of the Baltic Sea. Resko Lake, located 12 km west of the city of Kołobrzeg, is shallow (1.5 m) and is connected to the sea through a small canal (1.3 km long, 30 m wide). Material and methods. The material was collected from April 1969 and July 1970. A total of 159 perch were collected, in this number 104 fish from the lake, 43 from the sea, and 12 from the canal. Results. A total of 32 parasite species were recovered from the fish necropsied. The parasites represented 7 higher taxa: Protozoa (3 species), Cestoda (4), Digenea (13), Nematoda (5), Acanthocephala (3), Mollusca (1), and Crustacea (3). The parasite fauna of perch from the sea was definitely more abundant (31 species) compared to that of the lake (21), and the canal (12 species). Infection parameters of 13 parasite species demonstrated significant differences between the locations studied. The infection level of 6 parasite species was significantly higher in perch from the sea: Bothriocephalus scorpii, Ligula sp., Brachyphallus crenatus, Camallanus truncatus, Hysterothylacium aduncum, and Echinorhynchus gadi. On the other hand, infection levels of 7 other species were higher at the lake: Triaenophorus nodulosus, Bucephalus polymorphus, Azygia lucii, Tylodelphys clavata, Camallanus lacustris, Acanthocephalus lucii, and Achtheres percarum. The infection parameters of the fish from canal were similar to those from the lake. Interesting observations were made on the seasonality of certain parasites of both lake- and Baltic perch. The presently observed differences between parasite faunas of the fish from ecologically different adjacent estuarine locations are certainly caused by diversified environmental conditions that affected the processes of formation of the parasite communities there. Among important factors that could affect compositions of the parasite faunas could have been: availability of the intermediate hosts, exchange of waters (Baltic water influxes to the lake), fish migrations (spawning), and finally the separate identity of the two fish stocks studied.

Opis:
The monogenean ectoparasite genera Dactylogyrus and Gyrodactylus are hyperdiverse, and yet monogenean communities infecting freshwater fish in the northern Holarctic are variable and often impoverished. This is a result of extinctions during periods of glaciation when the host fishes experienced range contraction. Fish species recolonised northern Europe by one of three routes; stenohaline fishes recolonised from the Black Sea basin via DanubeRhine or Dnieper−Dniester−Vistula connections. These fish retain complex rich monogenean faunas with numerous species of Dactylogyrus and Paradiplozoon. Anadromous fishes, recolonising via marine migrations along the coast, and cold−water fishes surviving in refugia close to the ice sheets, have impoverished monogenean faunas, characterised by gyrodactylid and ancyrocephalid species. However, there may be great complexity, due to the evolution of new hostparasite interactions within specific watersheds before, during and after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This is demonstrated using examples from the sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and the bullheads (Cottus gobio). Finally, the evolution of Gyrodactylus salaris from a clade of G. thymalli is described, and the role of glaciation in stimulating the evolution of numerous clades of the latter is discussed. This latter example represents a unique opportunity to study speciation by host shift in real time.

Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae, otherwise known as sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus), are responsible for serious disease problems in salmon aquaculture. This mini-review examines the host factors that are affecting the susceptibility of sea lice infection in salmon; in particular, host species, environment, host stress levels, and host immunocompetency. In order to develop more effective methods to control sea lice infection, these factors should be taken into account, along with other factors such as sea lice life cycle and fecundity as well as salmon husbandry methods.

Ultrastructural analyses of fish-infecting myxosporean Henneguya piaractus that is found in the gill lamellae of the freshwater teleost Piaractus mesopotamicus (Characidae) and collected from the Paraguai River, Brazil were described. The parasite occurs within large whitish spherical to ellipsoidal polysporic cysts (up to 2.5 mm long) delimited by a layer of fibroblasts generally connected with some capillaries on the gill epithelium. No external morphological signs of disease were visible in the infected fishes. The tailed spores measured 61.5 ± 0.91 (60.2–62.6) μm in total length and ellipsoidal spore body 21.1 ± 0.62 (20.6–21.9) μm long, 6.7 ± 0.40 (6.2–7.3) μm wide and 2.5 ± 0.54 (2.0–3.1) μm thick. The spore wall was about 97 nm of thickness and consisted of a thin electron-dense exospore and a thick electron-lucent endospore with about 85 nm of thickness. The tailed spores were composed of two equal–sized shell valves adhering together along the straight suture line each having in continuity a equal caudal tapering tail measuring 40.5 ± 1.02 (38.7–43.1) μm in length. Two symmetric polar capsules measured 9.8 ± 0.28 (9.3–10.1) μm long and 1.9 ± 0.37 (1.4–2.4) μm wide, each having a polar filament with 10–11 (rarely 12) coils

This study used light and electron microscopy to describe a myxosporean, polysporic, histozoic plasmodium infecting the gill filaments of the freshwater teleost, Semaprochilodus insignis, specimens of which were collected from the Trombetas River (Central Amazonian Region, Brazil). Ultrastructural analyses of the fish-infecting spores identified the parasite as Myxobolus insignis, an organism that occurs within whitish unequal-sized plasmodia located in the intralamellar epithelium of the gill. Based on the observed morphological and ultrastructural features of the plasmodia in this study three stages in the plasmodial evolution were distinguished, related to the sporogonic stages of Myxobolus insignis. The plasmodium walls were also found to constitute a number of layers of fibroblasts, surrounded by collagen fibres, which displayed different morphological arrangements according to the different phases of evolution. This represents the first time such ultrastructural features have been described in detail for Myxobolus insignis plasmodia and offers potentially significant points of comparison with plasmodia from other species of myxosporea.

Opis:
A fish-infecting myxosporean was found in the urinary bladder of the teleostean Colomesus psittacus, collected from the Amazon River, Brazil. Specimens were sampled in three different periods: May and June, with water temperature ranging from 18–23ºC; August, with water temperature ranging from 24–28ºC; and November and December, with water temperature ranging from 29–32ºC. Upon observation, several fish displayed abnormal behaviour, consisting of erratic movements, and mortality was recorded among them. Necropsy of all sampled fishes revealed hypertrophy of the urinary bladder only among specimens previously displaying the irregular behaviour. Microscopic analysis of this organ confirmed the parasitic infection, resulting in the observation of spores floating free in the urine, and numerous plasmodia attached to the epithelium of the urinary bladder. Light and ultrastructural studies allowed recognition of the spores and plasmodia morphological characteristics. Coelozoic plasmodia were polysporic with varying organizational structure, according to the sampling period. Spores were equilaterally triangular with rounded ends in valvar view, measuring 8.8 ± 0.4 μm (n = 30) in length and 8.4 ± 0.5 μm (n = 30) in width, and displaying a ridge surface pattern. Two polar capsules were observed in the anterior end of the spores, measuring 3.1–3.2 μm in diameter. The spores were morphologically identified as belonging to the recently described genus Triangulamyxa. Further observation and comparison to the morphological features described for Triangulamyxa amazonica, the only other species within this genus, allowed us to conclude our parasite as a new species, herein named Triangulamyxa psittaca sp. nov. from the Amazon River, Brazil. Also, three different stages were distinguished in the plasmodium evolution, based on the observed morphological features at the three sampling periods. Fish sampled during May and June displayed small plasmodia (up to ~ 15–20 μm long), containing early stages of sporogenic development. Fish sampled during November and December presented larger plasmodia (up to ~ 850 μm long), which appeared flattened against and lining the urinary bladder epithelial cells and contained the later stages of sporogenic development, including some mature spores. Fish sampled during August presented plasmodia displaying intermediate morphological features between those observed in infected fish from the other sampling periods. Several immature and mature spores were among the different developmental stages. The parasite-host interface evolution is described throughout the different observed stages, with emphasis on the formation of septate junctions. Considering several previous reports, as well as the different environmental conditions during the sampling periods, the plasmodium development here described appears to be influenced by environmental factors, namely water temperature.

Opis:
The paiche, Arapaima gigas represents a socio-economically important species in the Peruvian Amazon, and actually an intensive production for human consumption has emerged during the last years. Therefore, more studies are required in fish farming development, especially concerning populations of parasites that affect fish production yields. Eighty specimens of paiche collected between September and October of 2011 from semi-intensive fish farm in Loreto State, Peru, were examined for their helminthic parasites. Five species were recorded parasitizing A. gigas: Dawestrema cycloancistrium and Dawestrema cycloancistrioides (Monogenea) on gills, Trichodina sp. (Protozoa) on the skin, Caballerotrema arapaimense (Trematoda) in stomachs and Philometra senticosa (Nematoda) in the swim bladder. Highest prevalence was recorded for D. cycloancistrium (100.0%), D. cycloancistrioides (83.0%) and Trichodina sp. (50.0%) and highest values of mean intensity and mean abundance were recorded for D. cycloancistrium (260) parasites per individual. The results confirm the necessity of constant monitoring of fish, seeking the diagnosis and timely control of infestations with parasites, in order to eradicate the mortality of the host that leads unviable the fish farming intended for human consumption.

Opis:
A study was carried out in a shallow, eutrophic Oświn Lake, within Seven Islands Reserve (north-eastern Poland), in order to determine the infection of fish with monogeneans as sensitive indicators of water quality. This paper presents comparative analysis of the occurrence of Monogenea in fishes from two, distinctly separated pools of the lake, differing in environmental conditions. The impact of fish size and sampling season on the infection parameters was also analyzed. Material and methods. In 1998 and 1999, a total of 1091 fish representing 8 dominant species were examined. Samples were collected four times a year (in May, July, August, and October) simultaneously from the eastern and western parts of the lake. Results. 16 species of Monogenea (and some unidentified specimeus) occurred in the fish examined, most of them from the Dactylogyridae family: Dactylogyrus sphyrna, D. auriculatus, D. intermedius, D. anchoratus, D. falcatus, D. tincae, D. wunderi, D. zandti, D. difformis, D. nanus, D. distinguendus, D. crucifer, D. caballeroi. Furthermore, Tetraonchus monenteron (Tetraonchidae), Gyrodactylus elegans (Gyrodactylidae), and Paradiplozoon megan (Diplozoidae) were detected. Monogenea occurred abundantly on the gills of pike, roach, rudd, white bream, carp bream and crucian carp, but rather sporadically in tench and perch. The highest species variety and diversity of monogenean guilds were detected in carp bream and roach. It was proved that D. crucifer and D. difformis were significantly more abundant in the western pool compared to the eastern one. Infection of fish with Dactylogyridae was season-dependent, contrary to the infection of pike with T. monenteron. Intensity of infection of white bream with D. sphyrna and roach with D. crucifer increased with fish body length; such a relationship did not appear for the other monogeneans and their hosts. Conclusion. Presence of common Monogenea in the fish examined, lack of rare species, poor diversity of monogenean guilds and relatively low infection rate could be connected with the low stability of the lake environment. Location-dependent occurrence of D. crucifer and D. difformis indicated that the exchange between fish groups from the eastern and western parts of the lake is limited.

Opis:
Throughout 3 years, a total of 721 various fish species, from the Łebsko Lagoon were examined. The most abundant groups of parasites were Digenea and Crustacea. Metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Nordmann, 1832) were found only in Cyprinidae (highest prevalence in rudd – 62.5%, and mean intensity in roach 12.71 indiv.). Metacercariae of Diplostomum spp. and Tylodelphys clavata (Nordmann, 1832), and also copepods Ergasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832 occurred in majority of examined fish species. The highest infection with Diplostomum spp. was noted in rudd (prev. 50.0%, int. 11.25 indiv.). T. clavata occurred with highest prevalence in pike (46.15%) and mean intensity amounted to 54.7 indiv. in perch. E. sieboldi was reported mostly from zander with typical for this fish Achtheres percarum (Nordmann, 1832) (prev. 75.0% and 92.86%; int. 6.0 indiv. and 10.92 indiv. respectively). Also nematode Anguillicola crassus (Kuwahara, Niimi and Hagaki, 1974) was noted with high prevalence 76.47% in eel. The remaining parasites species were noted less frequently.
W ciągu trzech lat (2000-2003) przebadano ryby z jeziora przymorskiego Łebsko. Łącznie zbadano 721 ryb z różnych gatunków. Stwierdzono obecność Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Acanthocephala i Crustacea. Najliczniej występowały Digenea, które stanowiły prawie 78% zebranego materiału (Fig. 1). U ryb karpiowatych dominowały metacerkarie P. cuticola, lokujące się w tkance podskórnej, głównie u wzdręgi i płoci (odpowiednio 62,5% i 42%). Metacerkarie Diplostomum sp., T. clavata oraz skorupiaki E. sieboldi występowały u większości zbadanych gatunków ryb. Skorupiak Achtcheres percarum, znany z występowania u okonia i sandacza, w Łebsku został stwierdzony jedynie u sandacza. Pełne listy pasożytów wraz ze wskaźnikami zarażenia, zostaną przedstawione w kolejnych pracach, poświęconych poszczególnym gatunkom ryb.

During a survey on species diversity of trichodinid ciliates from freshwater fishes in the Shitalakshya River of Gazipur district, Bangladesh, a new species of ciliate was identified and described using the silver nitrate impregnation method. The species is described from the gills of Johnius coitor in the Shitalakshya River of Gazipur district. Trichodina johniusi sp. n. may be characterised by having broad, rounded and slightly curved blades with shallow semilunar curve; relatively short, slim rays having parallel borders, but ill defined ray apophysis; ray tip never touches a well defined, undivided central circle, encircled by undulated perimeter, interspersed with black patches or granules; and the adoral cilia described a turn of approximately 400°. Based on these characters and the unique shape and absence of variability of the denticles among the silver impregnated specimens of the present species, it may be said that to a lesser extent, resembles T. domerguei.

European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a widespread species of freshwater fish. The most frequently isolated parasites in this species are endoparasites, such as trematodes, cestodes and nematodes. The purpose of the study was to determine the presence of parasite species found in perch and the correlations between the occurrence of parasites and age in fish from the Lake Góreckie reserve, located in Wielkopolski National Park. Among 139 examined perch, parasites were found in 69,8%. The analysis showed parasite species from the genera Acanthocephalus, Cammallanus, Neoechinorhynchus, Triaenophorus, Proteocephalus and Tetracotylus. The most common parasitosis was taeniasis. The analyses showed that occurrence of parasites correlates with the age of perch. Older fish were more often infected with parasites, especially of the genus Triaenophorus.

Opis:
There has hitherto been very few research projects focusing on ectoparasites of Antarctic fishes. The presently reported study provides data on the prevalence and the intensity of leeches (Hirudinida: Piscicolidae) infecting fishes. The materials were collected in December–February 1986/87 off the Elephant Island, South Georgia, Joinville Island, and South Shetlands. The following leech taxa were recorded in the Antarctic fishes of the family Channichthyidae: Trulliobdella capitis (Brinkmann, 1947); Cryobdella antarctica Epstein, 1970; Nototheniobdella sawyeri Utevsky, 1997; and Cryobdella sp. The above findings constitute new geographic records from off Elephant and Joinville Island and South Georgia.

Introduction. Eel is one of the most valuable commercial fish species of the Vistula Lagoon. For this reason its infection by non-indigenous species of parasites is the subject of the interest of sciencists. Material and methods. A total of 90 eel specimens caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined over the period of May-August 2005. The fish were subjected to standard procedures of parasitological examination and parasite identification. The fish were divided into two length classes: smaller and larger than 50 cm. To assess the effects of parasites on fish condition, the Fulton coefficient, expressed with the formula: WF = G · L⁻³ x 100, was calculated. Results. The fish were found to be hosts to 17 parasite taxa. The Ciliophora were represented by Trichodinella epizootica (Raabe, 1950); the Myxozoa by Myxidium giardi Cépede, 1906; the Digenea by Bunodera luciopercae (Müller, 1784), Deropristis inflata (Molin, 1859), Diplostomum spp., and Ichthyocotylurus platycephalus (Creplin, 1852); the Cestoda by Bothriocephalus claviceps (Goeze, 1782), Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Creplin, 1815), and Proteocephalus sp.; the Nematoda by Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974, Camallanus lacustris (Zoega, 1776), C. truncatus (Rudolphi, 1814), and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Acanthocephala by Acanthocephalus lucii (Müller, 1776) and Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Hirudinea by Piscicola geometra (Linnaeus, 1761); and the Copepoda by Ergasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832. All fishes were infected, and the mean intensity of all parasites was 4.8 inds. The nematode Anguillicola crassus was the most frequent parasite (67.8%, 4.2 inds), represented by all developmental stages, but mostly by adult specimens. The fish condition coefficient was somewhat higher in the eel larger than 50 cm (0.1746) than in those smaller than 50 cm (0.1734); in addition, only Anguillicola crassus-free fish showed a higher condition coefficient (0.1861), compared to the infected specimens (0.1715).

Opis:
Introduction. The european eel is one of the major fishing objects of the Russian fishery zone of the Vistula Lagoon (Baltic Sea). This is the reason that its parasite fauna was studied within 1998-2005. Material and methods. Totally 142 individuals of 35-81 cm in length were examined. The parasites collected from various organs were fixed and processed according to commonly accepted methods. Results. Twenty two parasite species representing the following higher taxa: Coccidia (2), Oligohymenophorea (2), Myxosporea (5), Monogenea (1), Cestoda (2), Trematoda (2), Nematoda (4), Acanthocephala (2), and Crustacea (2) were recovered. The following main features of the eel parasitofauna were determined: high specificity, predominance of the parasites with simple life cycle, the presence of three invader species (Anguillicola crassus, Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae, and Paratenuisentis ambiguus). The latter species was found in the Vistula Lagoon for the first time

Opis:
The three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.) has been a very frequent fish in the Baltic coastal waters. In the Baltic Sea occurred three morphological forms of the three-spined stickleback: trachurus, semiarmatus and leiurus. The distribution and frequency of all forms of the stickleback in the Baltic have been different. The examined sticklebacks were collected from the Gulf of Gdańsk (Gdynia, Puck, Hel) and the mouth of the Dead Vistula (Górki Wschodnie). The studies on the correlation between the morphological forms of the stickleback and parasites’ infestation were carried out. Some species of parasites infected first of all form trachurus or leiurus of the stickleback. Correlation was observed in some of marine parasites like Thersitina gasterostei (Pagenstecher, 1861) (Copepoda) and Gyrodactylus arcuatus (Bychowsky, 1933) (Monogenea), infected generally trachurus form. Freshwater ciliates from the family Trichodina or plerocercoids of Schistocephalus solidus (Müller, 1776) (Cestoda) were found generally on/in form leiurus.
