Opis:
A numerical computation-based analysis of the free vibration analysis of uniform beams with rectangular cross-sections is presented in this work using finite element analysis. The approach involves dividing the beam into segments at the crack section, which is then modelled for simulation for eigenfrequencies on the ABAQUS platform. The numerical simulation results are in excellent agreement with the findings of previous research, confirming the efficacy and applicability of the developed beam model. A sequential comprehensive approach towards analysis of the effects of the position and depth of the cracks on the natural frequencies are addressed in numerical results. The research findings confirm that the simulation model is suitable for the vibration analysis of beams or beam-like elements with different cross-sections.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomena that occur in biological tissueduring photodynamic therapy (PDT). Under the influence of the laser, triplet oxygen istransformed into singlet oxygen, which is cytotoxic to cancer tissue. The impact of thelaser on the tissue may also be accompanied by changes in the thermophysical parameters,e.g., perfusion, which can affect the supply of oxygen to the tissue and, consequently, the outcome of the therapy. The proposed model uses the optical diffusion equation, the Pennes bioheat transfer equation, and reactions equations for PDT. The connectionbetween bioheat transfer and PDT models is taken into account through the respectiverelationships between perfusion rate, capillary blood velocity, and the maximum oxygensupply rate. Furthermore, a method is proposed to model abnormal vascular patterns inthe tumor subdomain. The boundary element method and the finite difference methodwere used in the numerical implementation stage.

Opis:
The geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) system finds applications in numerous geotechnical projects, including retaining walls, road and railway embankments, slope stability structures, landfill structures, etc. This is attributed to its ability to enhance soil bearing capacity while minimizing deformations. Over the recent decades, extensive research has been conducted to comprehensively understand the behavior of GRS systems. In our research, we initially validate two laboratory tests using finite element (FE) modeling and conduct a parametric study. Our findings demonstrate that increasing the stiffness of layers from the bottom to the top of the wall significantly reduces wall displacements, approaching a state where all layers have uniform stiffness. Additionally, we investigate the plastic zone and the length of geogrids in each layer. Our results indicate that reducing the length of layers from top to bottom, similar to the plastic zone shape, does not impact displacements and forces within the layers. Simultaneously increasing stiffness with height and decreasing geogrid layer lengths within the plastic zone reduces the cost of GRS wall construction.

Background Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis of the subtrochanteric fracture (STF) location effect in the subtrochanteric region (STR) fixated with the Intermedullary Nail (IMN) versus Extramedullary Plate (EMP) implant. Material and methods A femur computed tomography (CT) scan was used to create a femur FE-model with a straight-line fracture located at the STR. During the analysis, the fracture was stepwise lowered from 0.5 to 4.5 cm below the lesser trochanter (LT) with a total of 9 steps of 0.5 cm. The IMN (using Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation) and EMP (using Dynamic Hip Screw) implants were modelled and implemented for fracture management. Results EMP illustrated lower Von-Mises stress for the proximal fractures (until 3.5 cm below LT); whereas IMN showed lower stress for distal fractures (from 4 cm below LT). The mean Von-Mises stress ratio for IMN versus EMP also decreased from proximal (1.93) to distal (0.47) of STR, with an intersection cross-point at 3.8 cm below LT. Conclusions The simulation shows that for the straight-line STF, EMP seems more favourable for proximal and IMN is more likely favourable for distal fractures. However, more FEM studies need to be conducted (e.g., with different fractures or implant types) on this topic.

A finite element-based dynamic study of cut-out borne composite cylindrical shells reinforced with stiffeners is conducted. Isoparametric shell element with eight nodes and beam element with three nodes are used to study the mode-frequency behavior of shells with varied edge conditions. Anti-symmetric angle-ply laminates of two, four and ten layers with varying lamination angles are considered. Ten-layer laminates are investigated further as they exhibit better performance in fundamental frequency than two and four-layer laminates. The reduced integration method is adopted to find the shell element’s stiffness and mass matrices and the subspace iteration method is used for the eigenvalue solution of free vibration formulation. Natural frequencies for the first five modes are considered. The effects of fiber orientation angle (θ), degree of orthotropy (E11/E22), and width/thickness ratio (b/h) on the natural frequency are determined through numerical studies. It is revealed that vibration behavior strongly depends on both the number and arrangement of boundary constraints.

Opis:
This paper presents the modelling of a simultaneous multiple collision occurring between several bodies of a kinematic chain. An algorithm is proposed that when used with an elastoplastic contact model, allows the phenomena that can occur during a multiple-body collision to be taken into account. These phenomena include the transition of the collision state from the restitution phase directly to the compression phase or successive collisions occurring along the same normal. The proposed algorithm can be used with any elastoplastic contact model. This paper presents its use with a selected model in a three-body system. Numerical calculations based on the model have been verified using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The use of the proposed improved approach reduces the post-collision velocity prediction error by 2.34% compared to the baseline description of collisions known from the literature.

Opis:
Mechanical vibrations are a common problem encountered in many machines, especially for vertical turbine pumps. These pumps are generally difficult to stiffen or damp, but the effective diagnosis must begin with an understanding of the underlying vibratory sources. In the present work, a deep well vertical turbine pump experienced extremely high vibrations for a long time although it still being new. It hasn't been in operation for over 6 months. The pump system suffers from extremely high vibration levels relative to the rotational speed (1X motor dominant frequency). An efficient strategy was implemented by using well-conceived techniques. The experimental modal analysis confirmed a presence of a natural frequency. Modifications were carried out to overcome resonance. Finite element analysis was done to determine the reed critical frequencies as a powerful tool to identify and mitigate vibration issues. On-site motor balancing was done to remove vibrations due to the residual imbalance. Results revealed decreasing vibration level by about 66% after solving all problems.

Opis:
Fault diagnosis and condition monitoring of synchronous machines running under load is a key determinant of their lifespan and performance. Faults such as broken rotor bars, bent shafts and bearing issues lead to eccentricity faults. These faults if not monitored may lead to repair, replacement and unforeseen loss of income. Researchers who attempted to investigate this kind of machine stopped at characterizing and deduced ways, types and effects of rotor eccentricity fault on the machine inductances using the winding function method. A modified closed-form analytical model of an eccentric synchronus reluctance motor (SynRM) is developed here taking into cognizance the machine dimensions and winding distribution for the cases of a healthy and unhealthy SynRM. This paper reports the study the SynRM under static rotor eccentricity using the developed analytical model and firming up the model with finite element method (FEM) solutions. These methods are beneficial as they investigated and presented the influence of the degrees of static eccentricity on the machine performance indicators such as speed, torque and the stator current and assess the extent to which the machine performance will deteriorate when running with and without load. The results show that static eccentricity significantly affects the machine’s performance as the degree of eccentricity increases.

Opis:
The article presents the types of the most common underground or partially sunken tanks used on farms. The analyzed tanks were designed for the storage of zoonotic fertilizers. Solid or semi-liquid fertilizers should be stored in livestock premises in sealed tanks, protected from leakage into the ground. Basic static schemes of tanks and types of loads acting on tanks were considered. The durability and leak-tightness of the tanks were also addressed, and the insulation used to protect the walls and bottom plate of the tanks was discussed. A computational example presents the values of loads acting on the various elements of the tank at two computational schemes, and compares the results obtained by two computational methods, i.e., the separated plate method and the finite element method. The discrepancies in the obtained results were pointed out. Recommendations were formulated for the design of tanks in terms of meeting the tightness criterion. FEM calculations were made for two cases: with and without consideration of the soil stiffness.

Pin joints of chain transmissions are areas of stress concentration, which can lead to the formation of cracks in the links. This process often contributes to a critical weakening of the cross-section in the lugs of these links, which results in its damage and may lead to the failure of the entire drive. The article analyses the influence of exemplary wear damages of chain transmission elements on the magnitude of stress concentration. The impact of the load, crack size, and its location on the level of stress increase was assessed. The location of cracks in the lugs of chain plates transmission links which lead to the most significant increase in stress level was identified.

The finite element method (FEM) is developed to simulate a discontinuous cutting in the whirlwind milling. Firstly, a simplified arc-cutting model for simulating the actual circular cutting, and a plane-cutting model for simplification were both developed and verified by experiments. Then, the effects of cutting parameters on the cutting force and residual stress were effectively investigated based on the plane-cutting model. Moreover, a plane-second- -cutting model was further developed. It showed that a minor decrease of cutting force and a higher maximum compressive stress were generated in the second cutting. Those results were conducive to predict and improve the whirlwind milling.

Opis:
Based on the experimental test results of the authors, this investigation is concerned with the finite element analysis to examine and compare the load values and failure modes of the authors’ results. This research was conducted using the Abaqus software. The experimental work included the fabrication of twelve plate girders with honeycomb and flat web plate corrugation patterns, which were then tested under a single concentrated load at the midspan. According to the corrugation dimension or outer honeycomb web thickness, the honeycomb steel plate web girder is divided into three groups (60 mm, 80 mm and 100 mm). The specimens also involved plate girders with a flat web. The specimens were created with three lengths (600 mm, 1,200 mm and 1,800 mm). The Abaqus software was used in finite element models to simulate the concentrated load. The numerical results demonstrated that the 60 mm thick honeycomb web provides a greater load-bearing capacity and shear strength than other girders. The 20 mm honeycomb corrugation on the steel plate girder indicates the increased and improved shear resistance. The conclusion was that as the width of the corrugation increased, so did the steel web’s ultimate load and shear strength, resulting in a positive relationship between the critical shear buckling load of the web and the moment of inertia at the strong axis. When the dimension of the corrugation increases, the moment of inertia of the Y axis (Iy) decreases; thus, the plate girder will fail with a less critical buckling load (Pcr). Also, it can be concluded that as the steel plate thickness of the honeycomb web increases, the shear resistance increases as well. However, the spacing between the intermediate stiffener or the horizontal spacing of the web panel can enhance the shear resistance of honeycomb web girder if it was decreased due to increasing the action of tension field force that resists the diagonal tension developed at the web panel by the applied midspan concentrated force.

A mathematical model is developed to study the characteristics of blood flowing through an arterial segment in the presence of a single and a couple of stenoses. The governing equations accompanied by an appropriate choice of initial and boundary conditions are solved numerically by Taylor Galerkin’s time-stepping equation, and the numerical stability is checked. The pressure, velocity, and stream functions have been solved by Cholesky’s method. Furthermore, an in-depth study of the flow pattern reveals the separation of Reynolds number for the 30 and 50% blockage of single stenosis and 30% blockage of multi-stenosis. The present results predict the excess pressure drop across the stenosis site than it does for the inlet of the artery with single and multiple stenosis and the increase in the velocity is observed at the center of the artery.

Indonesia is located between the Eurasian, Pacific, Philippines, and Indo-Australian plates. Various tectonic processes in the world and collisions between large plates and several small plates trigger many earthquakes in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the response of bored piles in the Auditorium Building of Brawijaya University toward seismic loads through analytical and numerical approaches based on finite elements with 2D (embedded beam row) and 3D (volume pile) modeling, where the analysis approach of pile deformation and lateral resistance with numerical methods will depend on idealization of the model used. In addition, the lateral resistance was compared based on combination lateral loads, pile stiffness, and soil stiffness when the values were different. The 2D finite element analysis reduces lateral resistance but overestimated the deflection on the pile surface. This is because in the 2D finite element modeling with an embedded beam row that the friction factor represented by the spring can reduces the stiffness and the pile–soil is tangent, so that there is no slipping against each other. In addition, the 3D finite element analysis with volume pile modeling increases soil stiffness at greater depths and the friction factor (interface) can improve the interaction between the soil and pile.
