Opis:
The following scenes from the Roman banquets of the 3rd and 4th centuries have been compared: from Rome where owing to good conditions many such scenes have survived – they were painted on the walls of tombs in underground Christian catacombs or carved on sarcophagi, both pagan and Christian; from Africa Proconsularis, e.g. the scene of the banquet of gladiators on the mosaic of the Roman house from Thysdrus (El Dz˙em, Tunisia); from Palestine also a single example of the preserved scene of a feast from the Roman house in Sefforis (Israel); and from ancient Scytia Minor - an example of the painting from the Christian tomb in Tomis (Constant¸a, Romania). Irrespective of the various character of the presented banquets among pagans of Christians, both a family meal at home; and a tomb banquet held mostly outdoors; or else a gladiator’s banquet before venatio; all these scenes are combined by the same joyful atmosphere and friendly fellowship at a table with the company lying on a semicircular bed, eating bread, fish or chicken, or drinking wine from goblets that was brought to them in jars by slaves.

In his latest novel Manaraga (2017) Sorokin comments on one of the most significant problems of modern times – the results of the anticipated death of the printed book as well as the related opposition between the original and the copy. The biggest problem, as the author suggests, is not the form of the already published literary classics but the absence of new classics, which can embrace ideas capable of awaking the humankind from its zest for comfort and motivating people for constructive progress.

Krzyż i zmartwychwstanie Jezusa położyły kres świątyni jerozolimskiej. Jezus ustanowił nowy kult „w duchu i prawdzie”. Świątynią stało się Jego ciało. Zmartwychwstały Pan gromadzi narody, jednoczy ludzi z Bogiem i między sobą w sakramencie swojego Ciała i Krwi. On jest nową świątynią ludzkości. Stanowi to sens znaku oczyszczenia świątyni.
From the theological reflection of early Christianity emerges the theological thought in the form of the Gospel. Four different perspectives on the work of Jesus were formed under the influence of changing the external circumstances of the life of Christians. This article is an attempt to capture the guiding thoughts of St. John’s description of the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee, and the cleansing of the temple (Jn 2:1–22) Jesus in Cana of Galilee opens an era of grace, which is actualized in the community of the Church in the sacramental life, especially in the Eucharist. The cross and resurrection of Jesus put the end to the Temple in Jerusalem. Jesus instituted the new worship “in spirit and truth”. His body became the temple. The Risen Lord gathers nations, unites men with God and with each other in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. He is the new temple of humanity. This is the meaning of the sign of purification of the temple.

The Mikstat Parish is situated in the south of the Province of Wielkopolska, Poland. On the Cemetery Hill there is a small wooden church dedicated to St Roch, who has been venerated there for almost three hundred years. The local community are aware of the unusual vitality and form of this cult. The Saint Roch feast is a truly exceptional event there. St Roch is the protector of domestic animals who keeps them safe from infectious diseases. The feast celebrations and the patron saint integrate families and the local community. Many people try to participate in the feast preparations. As animals are blessed on this occasion, parishioners and visitors from all over Poland bring their animals and pray to St Roch to protect them. The cult of St Roch in this community also integrates families, because the celebrations are attended by whole families, including relatives residing outside the parish. In 2007 St Roch was pronounced patron saint of the town of   Mikstat.

Nasiden’s Feast
Horatius
Apicius
Opis:
Two issues were raised in the article entitled „Dishes at Nasidien’s feast (Horatius, Saturae II 8) and Apicius’ De re coquinaria”. First, comparison of dishes the description of which Horace included in Saturae II 8 with heir analogical recipes for these from Apicius’ De re coquinaria. These comparisons lead to the conclusion that, even in Augustan times, developing the culinary art had its supporters and that the chefs were trying to surprise symposium participants with new ideas, which made them experiment in this area all the time. An example of such efforts, among the others, is the method of making a sauce which was used to put on Nasidien’s moray, or wild pigeons whose croups had been cut off. On the other hand, on the example of De re coquinaria we can observe the evolution of culinary art which attached more and more importance to various kinds of spices used in more and more sophisticated sauces which gave a proper taste to diverse dishes of fish, poultry and game. The other issue, which is still present, is proper understanding and interpretation of these fragments of Horace’s Saturae II 8 where the poet gives us a description of dishes prepared by Nasidien’s chefs. Among the others, attention was drawn to the fact that the notion of faecula Coa (Saturae II. 8. 9) shall not be understood, as assumed before, as dried powdered yeast or wine grounds but rather as a substitute for grape honey described by Isidor (Etymologiae XX 3, 13: „Faecula uva pinguis, decocta usque ad crassitudinem mellis, ac refrigata, utilis stomacho”). This understanding of faecula Coa lets us read differently 6-9 verses in Saturae II 8 where the wild boar served by Nasidien was poured over by cheap substitutes, i.e. so called allec sauce (instead of liquamen) and faecula Coa (instead of honey). The Horace’s description, thus, has, in this place an ironic implication. It was also suggested that the 51-53 verses in Saturae II 8, where Nasidien boasts that he was the first one with the idea of boiling eruca sativa (rucola) with inula helenium, should be linked with previous verses which give the description of the sauce used for pouring over moray as eruca sativa boiled with inula helenium did not form a new dish but it was an ingredient of the mentioned sauce. Information about liver of a white goose fed with figs in Saturae II 8, 88 deserves special attention. We cannot find this dish recipe in Apicius’ De re coquinaria. However, we learn from the Plinius’ account that it was Apicius who invented a new method of preparing goose liver (Plinius, Historia naturalis VIII 209: Adhibetur et ars iecori feminarium sicut anserum, inventum M. Apici, fico arida saginatis ac satie necatis repente mulsi potu dato). This method involved feeding those birds with figs before they were killed. This way ensured that goose liver had a right taste and later wine with honey was added to it. However, according to Horace’s information, which cannot be shaken, the custom of feeding geese with figs had been known before Apicius. As, on the basis of preserved records on Apicius’ life, it is difficult to confirm that he lived in Horace’s times it seems necessary to correct the account of Pilnius and to interpret it in the way that the innovation of Apicius involved only serving liver with some wine with honey (muslum), not feeding geese with figs as this practice had been done much earlier.

These bonds have been tying the present day members of the comunidad andina since the pre-Columbian times. The fiesta andina, with all its aspects (the feast in honor of the saints, the liturgical ceremony, and the celebration of the work) can be seen as a kind of a bridge between the sacred and the profane. We are interested in its role in creating community identity in the case of the Afghan diaspora in Slovakia. The findings suggest that in the new environment, there is a number of changes in the formal side-the absence of certain habits, their simplification and rationalization, the incorporation of major culture elements. In a term of significance, this holiday takes a new relevance and reflects the degree of the community integrity.

In all religions festival is an important part of worship: by certain rites provided on certain days, usually in an atmosphere of joy, cultic congregation pays homage to, gives thanks and asks for the grace of God. For the Israelite holidays are a special memento (reminder) of the events of the past that are realized also in the present and expect their fill in the future. Pentateuch has several calendars holidays, which were defined Israel’s celebration of major holidays. Looking at the holiday calendars from the Book of Exodus, Book of Leviticus, Book of Numbers, and the Book of Deuteronomy, we pay attention to the development of provisions for the holidays. Initially, the rules are very general boil down to a few verses, which have been determined the most important celebration of, without giving a specific date holidays. Date saint appeared only in the calendar Leviticus. With the development of legislation and with the settlement of the Chosen People in the Promised Land, rules for particular holidays underwent concretized and more accurate determination of sacrifices in the celebration of certain holidays.

Opis:
There are, in the area of Recife, in Northeastern Brazil, three main forms of popular, syncretic, and mediumistic religions.  Xangô, influenced by West African religions, worships orishas, syncretized with Catholic saints, through animal sacrifices and feasts, accompanied by dances and trances. Jurema turns around mestres and caboclo spirits, who, through mediums, offer plenty of advice. Blowing tobacco smoke on needy persons is a frequent rite of Jurema. During special feasts, believers drink the jurema beverage, made from the roots of the jurema tree. Umbanda, besides spirits of its own, is ready to honor Xangô and Jurema spirits, if these are ready to accept Umbanda’s ethos of spiritual purification. This attitude means  the dawn of an ethic of asceticism and rationality strange to both Xangô and Umbanda. According to our estimation the three varieties have a combined membership of about 1500 people, 30% belonging to Xangô, 60% to Jurema, and 10% to Umbanda. Sympathizers and occasional visitors are not included in these figures. The ritual process is an anthropological battlefield. Sacrifice, feast and trance relate to structures of power within and without the cult groups and to encompassing conceptions of personal and collective development.

Feast scenes from the main Star Wars episodes play an important role the creation of the plot and characters. In the paper I divide them into three types. In the first part I discuss the scenes in which a feast or a meal is a pretext for the dialogues revealing the characters’ past (the conversation between Luke and his uncle) or predict their future (little Anakin and Qui-Gon during the dinner; Anakin and Padmé’s conversation predicting their fall). In the second part I present eating scenes through the authors create or underline the characteristic features of the protagonists (comism of Jar Jar Binks and Chewbacca; Jabba’s gluttony; dehumanization of the black characters by the fact that they lack any contact with food) or build their social status (Rey’s scavenger meal; feasts at tha palaces of Jabba and Amidala; Jedi master’s ascetic meal on Dagobah; clones’ canteen). To analyse the scenes I use theories developed by food anthropologists (Mary Douglas, Claude Levi-Strauss, and Katarzyna Łeńska-Bąk) and make references to classical mythology and the Bible. In the last part I raise questions about consumer’s the identity of the character who eats juxtaposing devouring and eating scenes (why are Eworks considered humanoids whereas Wampa and Rancor are considered monsters since they all eat human flesh?).

The descriptions of characters’ eating habits recurring in Michel Houellebecq’s novels make a complex system of signs functioning at the textual and intertextual level as well as in reference to the extratextual reality, i.e., the situation of the Western society at the turn of the 21st century. The aim of this article is to identify the key points of this system and determine the possible directions of interpretation of these culinary motifs. For contemporary decadents from Houellebecq’s novels, lone feasts are a new kind of ritual, which – unlike the traditional “ceremonies of eating” – does not help maintain interpersonal relationships but only provides temporary relief and helps them forget about problems.

Rytuał biesiadowania organizuje scenerię, rytm i ruch postaci, aktywując szereg stowarzyszeń kulturalnych.
The sketch is devoted to five post-war Czech theatrical plays in which the motifs of the feast and alcohol are the signs of belonging or not belonging to the specified community and in most cases intertwine with the theme of politics: Audience of V. Havel, Švejkův vnuk of L. Balák, Nože a růže aneb topless party of M. Urban, Růže pro Marketu of M. Viewegh and Nahniličko of I. Kraus. The analysis is based mainly on the antropological models of feast offered by Michael Dietler, Brian Hayden and Claude Grignon, but their model of ‘diacritic feast’ is modified for the needs of the sketch. In the above mentioned dramas, the way of feasting and the favourite type of alcohol indicates the position of the character as the ‘stranger’ (like in Audience, Švejkův vnuk) or the ‘ruler’, ‘leader’ (Nože a růže anebo topless party). Drinking alcohol provides also a specific dramatic rhythm. Additionaly in Viewegh’s and Kraus’ play the state of intoxication metaphorizes the “abnormal” period of velvet revolution or the transformation. The ritual of feasting organizes the scenery, rhythm and movement of characters, activating a number of cultural associations. The gradual “opening” of the characters, caused by changes in their consciousness, reveals inner motivation, unmask the superficiality of the bond, conduct a parallel between the individual and the collective imagery.

Opis:
In 1813, the Agricultural Colony of Viana was founded with the settlement of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands. The Azorean families, in addition to seeking economic and social success, also brought their cultural background, including the object of our study: the Feast of the Divine Holy Spirit, which has been taking place in Viana since 1817. It is a bicentennial festival, full of material and immaterial symbolism, which preserves its structure, the ritual script similar to the one still occurring in the Azores, however, absorbing and maintaining also important characteristics of the local, capixaba and Brazilian culture. In this study, we revisit the historical context of the emergence of the Feast and the way it is held in the Azores. We comment briefly on its diffusion in Brazil and we analyze the Feast in Viana, basing on the narratives of its participants.
