Opis:
Any human activity, including the economic one, is carried out under the conditions of uncertainty, which arises from the complexity of reality. Uncertainty is closely related to risk. The concepts of uncertainty and risk, and thus the relations between them are not defined in the same way. The literature gives different criteria for the classification of the investment risk. With respect to the FDI, a risk can be divided into a general risk, associated with investing, and a special risk, arising from the location of investments outside the country of the investor’s origin. The special risk is usually divided into political (considered crucial) and economic, and both these groups of risks are microeconomic and macroeconomic. A multitude types of investment risks and their globalization make it difficult to identify all their sources and their assessment, which makes the decision about investing not an easy task. Additionally, a number of important determinants of management is difficult to calculate or irrational, which further complicates the decision-making process.

Opis:
In 2017 statistics showed that Chinese Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in Poland for 2016 amounted to a more than half of all Chinese FDI in Poland for the 2000–2016. Yet the overall amount of Chinese FDI remains modest in comparison with Western Europe or even with Hungary. Despite much proclaimed Sino-Polish rapprochement in 2015–2016 and high hopes for OBOR/BRI initiative in Poland, cooperation with China has not been a breakthrough for Poland in terms of economic results. There have not been ground-breaking Sino-Polish projects and Polish government’s desire to strengthen ties with China loosened in late 2016/early 2017 (though it may revive now). There are several reasons for that, from the perception of Poland as non-attractive for majority Chinese investments, via lack of overall Polish strategy of attracting these investors to discrepancies of economic interests between Poland and China.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to discuss the role of green energy production in attracting FDI. The main assumption of the analysis is the positive role of FDI on a host country’s economy. That is why shaping investment attractiveness is a key issue that governments have to address and providing sufficient energy supply is of paramount importance. In order to achieve the article’s objective the importance of energy supply in terms of FDI has been presented, energetic situation of Poland was described and special emphasis was put on green energy production in Poland. The final part of the article is the analysis how green energy production in Poland influences its attractiveness and what ought to be done to improve the situation. The main conclusion from the analysis is that it is necessary to develop green energy projects not only to create environmentally-friendly image but also to address the shortages of energy supply that are more and more likely to occur which may force foreign investors to withdraw their capital from the country.

International flow of capital in the form of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is considered to be the primary form of capital transfer in the global economy. It plays an important role among other forms of international capital flows, due to the intensity of its streams and its strength of impact on local economies. Host countries use FDI to finance activities such as industry restructuring and transfer of technology. The aim of this paper is to present current achievements in the field of theoretical explanations of FDI – its main motives. The article relates also to current selected trends in FDI flows during the economic downturn caused by the recent financial crisis. Above all ,however, this paper aims at showing FDI theories in terms of a knowledge intensive economy.

Vietnam and Laos are the neighbour countries that have close relationships in politics, economic as well as in investment. Since early 2000s, Laos has swiftly become a targeted market in going global strategy of Vietnamese enterprises. Laos has been the biggest FDI recipient of Vietnam, comprised for around 25% of total outward FDI registered from Vietnamese firms. Vietnamese firms have played an increasingly important role in Lao economy, created nearly 40,000 jobs for local workers and contributed more than 70 million USD for social security in Laos (end of 2016). The article analyses some main features of FDI from Vietnam to Laos in the period 1994–2016, points out the “bottle necks” of the FDI flows such as the low level of spillover effect (with more than 60% of projects are vertical FDI); inappropriate investment structure (highly concentrate on mining industry, hydropower). The authors also suggest some policy implications for Vietnamese government and Laos government to boost the FDI inflows in the upcoming time.

Hungary, FDI, economic transition
Opis:
At the turn of century the paradigm of economic development has been changing. Despite the economic instability in the world the process of globalization has not been stopped. The importance of growth factors included in the area of R&D (research and development) increased. These two aspects are also important in the analysis of the economic transition in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Factors from R&D area are now perceived as the key conditions for creating knowledge -based economy and for sustainable development. There should also be noted low potential of CEE countries to generate investments in modern sectors of economy based on R&D. In this context, there is increasing importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) as an indirect instrument for strengthening the modernization process of economic structures and providing the basis for sustainable development. In this paper the subject of analysis is the influx of FDI in Hungary and their impact on the economy of the country in the period 1989–2012. The paper also attempts to answer the question on relations between the level and characteristics of the inflow of FDI and structural changes and economic development in Hungary.

Opis:
Theoretical background: Due to the growing maturity of Chinese market the country needs to adjust its policy regarding foreign direct investment (FDI), i.e. to increase openness for FDI, to keep control over them in key industries and to influence their inflow in desired industries and regions. Adopting the negative-list approach and changes in both the negative list and encouraged industry catalogue provides tools for this challenge.Purpose of the article: The purpose of this article is to present how changes in China’s Foreign Investment Encouraged Catalogue and Negative Lists both in free-trade zones (FTZs) and at the national level are used as a tool for managing country’s FDI inflow.Research methods: Analysis of legal documents and reports as well as literature review.Main findings: Starting from the adoption of negative-list approach in FTZs in 2013, the negative lists had been drastically reduced both in reference to FTZs and national level. Those reductions lead to a decrease in China FDI restrictiveness index. FTZs were used as a testing area for both the negative list composition and negative-list approach itself. Negative lists allowed the state to keep control over FDI in key industries allowing, at the same time, greater freedom for foreign investors. Encouraged catalogue is used not only as a tool for attracting FDI from desired industries but also for addressing regional inequalities.

Opis:
The role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in economic development and its contribution to the performance of domestic firms has motivated researchers to initiate studies for analyzing the impact of FDI on economic performance. The literature on the role of FDI mainly focuses on the production, employment, economic growth, balance of payments, knowledge spillovers and general welfare of the recipient country. However, economic growth is triggered by firms that are able to transform these positive impacts of FDI into improved firm performance. Nevertheless, the impact of FDI on firm performance has not been investigated at firm level widely. The aim of this paper is to examine whether FDI and investment incentives can be justified on the basis of academic research regarding their firm performance effect. A panel data of non-financial firms listed at Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) for the period 1998-2007 is used to model firm performance in terms of return on assets and sales as a dynamic process. This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing firm level empirical evidence on the impact of investment incentives and foreign ownership together with size on firm performance. Our results suggest that large and foreign ISE listed firms perform better than domestic firms. Moreover, investment incentives, as both determinants of FDI decisions and as their stand alone positive impact on firm performance, can create the economic environment in which FDI inflows can be transformed into positive returns both for recipients and investors.

An economic regime might take the form in which extractive institutions do not allow for the proper development of foreign direct investment. In consequence these countries cannot fully benefit from economic aspects of globalization and increasing standards of living. This is the case of Ukraine, a country with very good location advantages and a well-educated workforce that attracts only the murky type of FDI. It is a country that is troubled by corruption and political instability but at the same time a country that began the path to finding its national identity by fighting against extractive institutions.

In the article, we attempt to assess the investment attractiveness of the New EU Member States, using the Visegrad Group countries as examples. This study is structured as follows: First, it explores the existing literature on factors of investment attractiveness. Further we examine inward foreign direct investment flows in the Visegrad Group countries against the global performance in the area from 1990 to 2013. Next we discuss the investment attractiveness of New Member States of the European Union in selected international rankings, paying special attention to the positions occupied by the four analysed countries. The final part examines the correlation between selected variables characteristic of investment attractiveness and the inflow of foreign investment. The study is based on statistical methods (Spearman’s rank correlation and Pearson correlation). At the end we present our conclusions.

Opis:
This paper, while analysing innovation in Southeast Europe, and in particular the case study of Macedonia, focuses on the basic ties between foreign direct investments and innovation. Foreign direct investment is usually defined as dominant or controlling ownership of a company in one country (the host country), by an entity based in another country. The concept of industry-government- university relationships interprets the change from a dominating industry-government duo in the ‘industrial society’ to a growing triadic relationship between industry-government-university in the ‘knowledge society’. From the beginning of the transition process, foreign direct investments have been a priority, an essential pillar that moves the society forward towards a developed market economy. In addition, as the influx of capital increases it inevitably brings with it increased innovation. Hence we examine the possibility that these two indicators have a positive and upward ascent and facilitate the development of the economy.

This empirical research investigates state based factors affecting the inward FDI employment among fifty states of the United States, uses annual data for the period of time from 1997 to 2007 and identifies several state-specific determinants of FDI employment. The results indicate that the major factors exerting positive impact on inward US FDI employment are: real wages, infrastructure, unionization level, educational attainment, FDI stock and manufacturing density. In addition, the results show that gross state product growth rate, real per capita taxes and share of scientists and engineers have negative impact on FDI employment. Our findings indicate the importance of selected variables in evaluating the effects of FDI flow on state employment.

Opis:
Research background: Foreign direct investment is perceived as a valuable tool for economic growth. The growth could be realized more or less as a set of benefits depending on the FDIs features. In the period from 2009 to 2016 a remarkable increase in the share of FDIs inflow in automotive sector in Macedonian economy was noticed, from 2.8% to 14.1%. Thus, there seem to be good reasons to examine the issue of how the increased FDI inflow expressed through the remarkable in-crease of FDIs inflow in the automotive sector. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to analyze the causality between the increased FDIs inflow in the automotive industry and a remarkable export growth. The research interest of the study is to recognize the importance of the FDIs inflow structure as a determinant of the export structure. Methods: Within the paper a model is developed that identifies the FDIs as a factor of growth of the export performances. A regression analysis is used to examine the correlation between the FDIs inflow and export. In order to examine causality, the Granger causality test is applied between the FDIs inflow and increased export. Findings & Value added: The results suggest that FDIs create a good basis for quantitative and qualitative shift in the export structure of the Macedonian economy. The paper associates growth of sectoral export with the growth of FDIs in that sector. Due to the increased FDI inflow in the automotive industry, this sector has significantly increased its share in the total Macedonian export. The paper indicates that FDIs can be considered as a way of engagement in the global supplying chains, which additionally influences positively the competitiveness and export performance of the host suppliers.

Opis:
In 2003 Goldman Sachs published a report written by Wilson and Purushothaman entitled Global Economics Paper No. 99: Dreaming With BRICs: The Path to 2050, which central idea is that over the next 50 years, Brazil, Russia, India and China could become a much larger force in the world economy, even larger than the current G7 economies in US dollar terms. In 2017 BRICS joint contribution to the world economy was 23.6 per cent and according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predictions this is set to rise to 26.8 per cent by 2022. Based on the used estimation, the biggest contributor to the FDI inflows is an index of economic openness, where decreasing barriers for trade and investment increase country’s exposure to the global economy, which in return has a significant effect in attracting FDI to the economy. Secondly, in majority of cases change in both import and export values tend to negatively affect FDI inflows, such phenomenon does not necessarily mean that country must not engage and liberalize its trade policy, but that the impact of those factors is inconsistent and has to be researched further. Thirdly, GDP contribution confirms the gravity model hypothesis as larger economies tend to attract larger volumes of FDI inflows, however in case of China this effect seems to be slightly reversed. Lastly, the effect of trade balance on FDI inflows remains complex to capture, however a dummy variable method applied in this paper can be applied to countries that have both positive and negative trade balance dynamic.
W 2003 roku Goldman Sachs opublikował raport napisany przez Wilsona i Purushothamana zatytułowany "Global Economics Paper No. 99: Dreaming With BRICs: The Path to 2050, którego główną ideą jest to, że w ciągu następnych 50 lat Brazylia, Rosja, Indie i Chiny mogą stać się znacznie większa siła w światowej gospodarce, nawet większa niż obecne gospodarki G7 w ujęciu dolarowym. W 2017 r. Wspólny wkład BRICS w gospodarkę światową wyniósł 23,6%, a według prognoz Międzynarodowego Funduszu Walutowego (MFW) do 2022 r.

The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries brought an intensive increase of international economic connections that were a part of the process of globalization of the world economy. The result of these processes was opening of the countries’ economies which influenced the increase of the role of foreign investments as a factor of economic development of a country. Foreign direct investments (FDI) are nowadays one of the most sought-after forms of foreign capital flow. Foreign investments do not cause external debt. They influence the flow of technology, generate economic growth, contribute to the decrease in unemployment, introduce new management methods, create access to the new markets and generate production infrastructure. The following study presents a short characteristic of foreign investments in France. It analyses regional differentiation of foreign investments in France on the basis of their quantity and in reference to the number of workplaces generated by FDI. Finally, the article presents the factors that have influence on the localization of foreign investments.

On January 1, 2020 the new Foreign Investment Law of the People’s Republic of China (中华人民共和国外商投资法) entered into force to promote investments in China. The aim of the law is to foster cross border investments. This law was passed on March 15, 2019 by the National People’s Congress. The Chinese FDI legal framework is composed of a set of laws and regulations that are dynamically shaping the economic reality. What are the possible tensions between the new law and the complex system of values in China? Is the new law an agent of implementing de facto social development? In summary, the results show that there is a complex relationship between FDI and social development in China. The new Chinese law might be an inspirational source of non-European legal tradition for Central Europeans.

grounded theory method (GTM)
Opis:
The aim of this study, conducted as part of the project “Polish direct investment in the mature markets of Western Europe”, was to propose a new concept, along the lines of a grounded theory, and emerging from the empirical data, seeking to explain the phenomenon of Polish investment abroad. Following methodological guidelines (GTM, or grounded theory method), including the steps of sampling, sorting and coding data, resulted in an analytic scheme that may provide a framework for the study of Polish FDI (foreign direct investment), particularly in the Western Europe. The results indicate that foreign expansion is sometimes regarded as a guarantee of a firm’s continued existence in Poland and beyond. A certain syncretism, or dialectic nature, of Polish investment in the markets of Western Europe, which may reflect the specific nature of FDI and may serve as a practical measure of this “diversity,” was identified in the course of this work. The results should enrich the existing literature concerning the relatively weakly conceptualized categories of Polish foreign investment and should contribute to the further development of research on this issue.

The paper deals with the idea of spillovers (or indirect effects) from foreign direct investment increasing the firm productivity in transitive economies under the circumstances of economic integration. The Baltic countries are the best example of such a kind of states. The indirect effects for the productivity are examined both at a country and at a firm level with the use of a proved estimation model in order to probe for the existence; sign and magnitude of different types of spillovers. The paper includes a brief historical analysis of the previous works and the history of elaboration of an estimation model for spillovers. The analysis of FDI inflows in Estonia; Latvia and Lithuania with diagrams is included to visualize the change in the attitude of foreign investors to these countries during the post-soviet period and after their accession to the EU.

In this paper we study the relationship between foreign firm ownership and innovation activities in a wide group of West European and Central and East European countries. Based on a dataset including more than 100,000 firms covered by the 2014 edition of the Community Innovation Survey, we examine the role of home- and host country effects in firms’ decisions to introduce various forms of innovation. In addition, we identify a group of foreign-owned firms that specialize in exporting and interpret them as participants of hierarchic global value chains organized by multinational enterprises. We show that while foreign direct investment, especially from Germany, is positively associated with innovation, the opposite effect is observed in the case of hierarchic global value chains’ participants. The negative impact of within-multinationals global value chains on innovation is more pronounced in the affiliates located in the Central and East European countries

The aim of this study is to investigate the inuflence of military expenditure on the relationship between terrorism and investment in twenty-four African countries for the period 2001 to 2018. The study utilizes xfied eefcts regression with Driscoll and Kraay standard error and cushions the eefct of simultaneity and reverse causality us ing the lags of the regressors as instruments. eTh empirical results reveal the negative eefct of terrorism on both domestic investment and foreign direct investment (FDI). The study further reveals a negative net eefct of military expenditure on the relation ship between terrorism and investment. Furthermore, it was discovered that a threshold of 2% to 5% of military expenditure in GDP is required for military expenditure to osfet the negative eefct of terrorism on FDI. eTh study recommends that counterterrorism initiatives be tailored more towards inclusive growth policies, increasing access to education, and improving the quality of governance.

For the location of new activities in CEE, a helpful factor was sobering up of the European companies from the Indian euphoria. Because of different, lower-level property rights, difficulties in intercultural communication and, very often, only superficial knowledge of the topic, the companies stopped outsourcing of some more sensitive activities to India or China. From the global point of view the “CEE miracle” is hard to compare with Asia, if in 2006 the CEE region received only a little more than $2B, in comparison to $386.5B worldwide (Třešňák 2007). But it brings new high-quality working places and highly embedded investments; additionally the multiplying effect is also much higher than in mounting factories activities. Outsourcing also supports motivation for education, world languages knowledge, travelling, and other positive phenomena. There are no or only very few risks. Who can be the competitor in the region? Economists do not suppose that the investment boom will stop in the near future. But Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and maybe countries of former Yugoslavia are perceived as direct future competitors of the Vysehrad region. Despite the fact that we can observe a geographical trend towards selective concentration of these quaternary activities to big centres, especially metropolitan regions, and increasing polarisation between regions, positive effects for the country as a whole prevail. An important role of FDI localisation is played by the presence of technical universities and other „soft“ infrastructure. They do not bring the highest number of created jobs, but they are crucial in embedding other economic activities.

The novelty of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) as a research topic means that the literature covering the interrelations between digital business transformation and categories such as internationalisation, foreign direct investment (FDI), or clusters is scant. This paper shows that clusters may contribute to the advancement of I4.0 while at the same time they stimulate the internationalisation of indigenous firms and the inflow of foreign investors. Based on conceptual deliberations it develops a research agenda for exploring how clusters might affect OFDI and IFDI by facilitating the I4.0. It can advance our understanding on the spatial aspects of the ongoing business digital transformation.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badania determinant eksportu Pakistanu, dokonanego przy wykorzystaniu danych szeregów czasowych z lat 1990–2016. Zastosowano również wybrane testy ekonometryczne w celu sprawdzenia kointegracji zmiennych. Do sprawdzenia stacjonarności wybranych zmiennych wykorzystano test pierwiastka jednostkowego.
The research investigated the determinants of Pakistan’s exports by using time series data from 1990–2016. Certain econometric tests were also applied to check cointegration among variables. A unit root test was used to check the stationarity of selected variables. After the stationarity of the data, a vector error correction model is used to estimate the effect of regressors, like foreign direct investment, gross domestic product, employment level, and consumption expenditures on a dependent variable, i.e. exports in the short run. The result shows the positive relationships that foreign direct investment, gross domestic product and employment level have on exports, and the adverse impact of consumption expenditures on the dependent variable. The study uses Johansen’s cointegration test for the long run. The results show that all the variables are co‑integrated in the long run. It is suggested that the government should encourage foreign direct investment and gross domestic product, which would help accelerate Pakistan’s exports. It is also suggested that whenever policymakers provide a trade policy, in particular, in relation to exports, then the adverse effect of exchange rate depreciation, external debt burdens, taxes, sanctions and protectionism should be quantified, and necessary measures be suggested so as to minimize any repercussions.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to explain which factors are important determinants for allocating FDI in the Visegrad Group countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) by investors from the “old” EU member states. The article is divided into three main sections, except for the introduction and the final conclusions. First, we discuss the literature on the determinants of FDI. In Section 2 we introduce the applied research methodology. Finally in (Section 3), we present and discuss the empirical results. We selected 13 variables which were used in the estimation of the panel models, they include core gravity model variables such as the economy size (home and host nominal GDP per capita), geographical distance as well as augmented gravity model variables such as access to the sea and/or a common border. We also selected five efficiency-seeking variables (labour productivity, unemployment rate, minimum wage, corporate tax rate, investor protection index) as well as two membership variables (EU, EMU). Adding such variables as “common V4 border”, “EMU membership” or “protection index” seems to offer a novel approach. FDI from EU-15 countries are allocated in V4 countries more because of the home and host market potential measured by GDP so they can be classified as pure mark-seeking horizontal FDI. Currently investors from the mature EU-15 countries, whilst allocating FDI in V4 countries rather do not seek efficiency (as before), but the short distance is more important for them (than it used to be before the accession).

Foreign capital inflow is viewed as a driving force of economic growth and development. To a large extent, the effects it may potentially produce dependon the l ocation choice or, in other words, on the economic advancement of the region in question, available skills on the labour market, and the quality of infrastructure. Capital flows usually lead to the intensification of foreign trade, however, the ultimate potential outcomes of social and economic transformation within a given territory depend on the structureof tr ade flows. In relation to the above, this paper is motivated by the wish to grasp the pattern of foreign investment location choices (paying special attention to investors from other EU Member States) and their basic effects on the internationalisation of regions in the light of public interventions admissible in Poland. To this end, a statistical analysis of the following data will be carried out into: a) the evolution in the location pattern observed for companies with foreign capital based in Polish voivodeships (NUTS-2) in the period 2004–2017 and b) their foreign trade performance. Statistical analyses have led to the conclusion that foreign capital not only targeted better-developed regions of the country (even though their State aid offer is more limited) as the location for its investment but also companies established in these locations as a result of such investments are more strongly engaged in international trade (and are affiliates within the organisational structure of a single business entity) than foreign companies which chose to locate their businesses in poorer regions of the country.

Opis:
Foreign direct investment inflows into Ghana have been a major source of economic growth transformation. Many investing countries aspire to provide Ghana’s economy with new models and direction for development alternatives to foreign aid which will in effect benefit both nations. Given the government’s intention of transforming most agriculture products into finished commodities other than exporting these commodi-ties in their raw states, a new set of incentives and policies to attract investors into the agriculture sector have been initiated. This consists of farming for food provision and employment generation in a bid to moderating the high rate of unemployment aside depending on the normal farming methods. This study sets to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment in the agriculture sector on employment generation. The paper argues that employment created in the agriculture sector was attained through the number of registered projects allocated to various sectors within the Ghanaian economy categorized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre. Methodologically, this study utilizes a statistical descriptive approach that backs a summary of the complementary analysis of foreign direct investment inflow quantitatively using data on FDI inflows from 2013 to 2018. The result shows that the percentage share of the total number of registered projects allocated and employment created in the agriculture sector through FDI is very low compared to sectors like the manufacturing and service. It was also discovered that the agriculture sector contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the late 90s weighed much higher than the other sectors and contin-uous decline in the 2000s. It is recommended that investors should enter into the agri-culture sector since there are many benefits. FDI, Agricultural Sector, Employment Generation, Economic Growth

Opis:
: In the paper the author tries to analyse the value of foreign direct investments inflow into certain Central and Eastern Europe countries and to assess determinants which cause these countries to attract large value of the foreign direct investments. Twenty countries of the aforementioned region were analysed. Ten of them belong to the European Union including three belonging to the Euro-zone. Additionally, the paper contains presentation of the most significant determinants of the foreign direct investments based on investors’ motives. In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, the author reviewed the literature on the subject paying special attention to the issues in question, and she presented the results of the survey focused on the FDI determinants in the economies which are the subject of this paper. The paper also contains results of two surveys conducted by the author in 2006 and 2012 regarding motives of the entrepreneurs who make foreign direct investments in the territory of the EU countries. Review of the theory, analysis of general empirical observations and own surveys of the author prove that the size of a market, the possibility to maximize profits and discounts and privileges for investors are the most substantial internal and external factors which encourage entrepreneurs to invest on foreign markets. Moreover, membership in the European Union and/or the Eurozone, as well as the warranty of macroeconomic stability of a country also pose a substantial advantage when an investor chooses the location for an investment.

However the fixed cost for the foreign entrant and the degree of product differentiation determine which policy should be implemented to maximize national welfare, and the cases in which the domestic government can intervene, to achieve a Pareto-improvement.

The problem of detecting and isolating sensor faults (sensor fault detection and isolation—SFDI) on a general aviation aircraft, in the presence of external disturbances, is considered. The proposed approach consists of an extended Kalman observer applied to an augmented aircraft plant, where some integrators are added to the output variables subject to faults. The output of the integrators should be ideally zero in the absence of model uncertainties, external disturbances and sensor faults. A threshold-based decision making system is adopted where the residuals are weighted with gains coming from the solution to an optimization problem. The proposed nonlinear observer was tested both numerically on a large database of simulations in the presence of disturbances and model uncertainties and on input-output data recorded during real flights. In this case, the possibility of successfully applying the proposed technique to detect and isolate faults on inertial and air data sensors, modelled as step or ramp signals artificially added to the real measurements, is shown.

The paper reviews empirical studies on how various location factors influence foreign direct investment (FDI). The author focuses on some recent research and takes into account determinants such as market size, market growth, labor costs, labor quality, openness to trade, geographic distance, taxes, country risk, and corruption. These factors do not represent a closed set of factors that affect FDI location decisions, but are most frequently considered, Wawrzyniak says. Research theories list many factors that can influence the location of FDI. These include economic determinants (that depend on the type of FDI) as well as the policy framework for FDI and business facilitation. Moreover, these FDI determinants tend to change over time, Wawrzyniak says, and some of them, such as privatization of transition economies, are particularly important to some countries and regions. Empirical studies on the impact of various determinants on the location of FDI are inconclusive because different authors have reported different results. Some researchers say that a specific factor has a positive influence on FDI, while others argue the opposite. Still others believe that this particular factor is statistically insignificant. However, not all the potential determinants of FDI are equally controversial, Wawrzyniak says. The results of empirical research on different location factors show a varying level of consistency. They are generally more consistent in the case of factors such as market size and less consistent in the case of labor costs, for example.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to identify the key determinants in the Gulf Cooperation Council (which will be referred as GCC) for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows. Using the understandings of financial econometrics, the study discusses a significant positive association between FDI in Non-oil industries, while on the contrary, the negative association with the Oil industries. Natural resources are a path for some countries to attract FDI but it does not achieve the main benefits of FDI, which is introduction of new technology and offering job opportunities. Existing literature argues the suggestion that resource-rich countries attract less FDI because of resource (oil) price volatility. Statistical Models in Economic are used to analyze the data in achieving the conclusion. This study examines that natural resources discourage FDI in GCC countries, and helps identify policy reform priorities to support diversification and growth in the GCC through foreign investment.

The study concluded that increase in foreign direct investment (F.D.I.) is optimistic move for the future of Indian Life Insurance Sector, since this sector need huge amount of capital investment which can be done effectively only through increase in FDI and it enhance overall performance of insurance sector. Innovative insurance product and services, better use of technology, increase in employment and competition etc. are by-product of increase in F.D.I in insurance Sector. Government of India through Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (I.R.D.A.I.) and Reserve Bank of India (R.B.I.) need to keep regular check on the outflow of India currency. India is growing economy and many consider it an attractive country for investment in mainly to its fast growing and changing insurance market. Indian insurance industry is still less penetrated and has huge growth potential. Foreign direct investment (F.D.I.) plays significant role in the economic development of the country. This study is based on secondary data collected from I.R.D.A and research papers from various journals.

The aim of this study is to examine the long run equilibrium relationship between regulation and FDI inflows in Nigeria over the period of 1990 to 2016 which past studies have failed to explore. Consequently, the study utilized data from UNCTAD, World Bank database, CBN Statistical Bulletin and Cointegration, DOLS and Granger Causality approach was used to address the objective of this study. However, the major findings in this study are summarized as follows. Government effectiveness, rule of law and inflation rate have a significant positive relationship with FDI inflows in Nigeria in the long run, apart from regulation quality that is not significant. This implies that regulation is favorable to the inflows of cross border investment in the country. In addition, there is a unidirectional feedback relationship which runs from FDI inflows to regulation quality and one way feedback relationship runs from the rule of law to government effective-ness in the country. Finally, due to the findings that emerged from this study, the following recommendations are made for the policy makers, investors and future researchers in Nigeria that when attraction of FDI inflows are the target of the policy makers in the country, improving variables like rule of law, government effectiveness and regulation quality will induce the inflows of cross border investment accordingly in the long run. Also, the Nigerian government should be committed to the provision of a sound business environment in the form of good government regulations to ensure rapid inflows of FDI in the country.

Opis:
The significant factors determining Foreign Direct Investments are trade openness, economic growth and the institutional profile of the country. Among the latter determinants, pension system privatization attracts foreign investors, as it gives them a signal that the country’s macroeconomic stability is going to improve. FDI are beneficial for economic development, especially for economies in transition. The question arises whether the degree of pension system privatization attracts FDI to developed economies. To answer this, Dunning’s Investment Development Path was applied for 44 countries over the period 2006- -2016 from the OECD database. The first step consisted of clustering data to obtain the IDP stage for each country in a given year. The second step was a panel estimate. The outcome indicates that when a country is in a lower IDP stage (up to 2), the size of the private pension funds positively affects FDI inflow. When the country reaches the higher stage, private pension funds’ size does not seem to affect the FDI inflow.
Is there a link? 19 OECD.

Opis:
This paper uses a panel cointegration model to analyse the long-term relationship between high-technology exports and economic growth in selected OECD countries in the period from 1989 to 2015. We used high-technology exports (current US$) as the dependent variable and the GDP growth rate, FDI (foreign direct investment), application of patents by residents, and gross capital formation % of GDP as explanatory variables. The export structure of countries is moving increasingly towards technology-intensive products such as ICT (information and communications technology), aerospace, computing and office equipment, electronics, chemical products, pharmaceuticals, and electrical machinery. The export structure has played an important role in the economic growth theories of many countries since the 1960s, as export growth has been associated with faster productivity and GDP growth. We aimed to find out the relationship between high-technology exports and the explanatory variables which we listed for 14 selected OECD countries (Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, the UK, and the USA). According to our empirical results, there is a long-term relationship between high-technology exports and economic growth in selected OECD countries. The empirical results show that an improvement in patent applications and foreign direct investment play a decisive role in upgrading selected OECD countries’ high-tech exports, while growth rate and investment play a negative role in enhancing these countries’ high-tech exports.

Foreign direct investments are very important for the implementation of strategic reforms, transfer of advanced technologies and managerial methods, thereby stimulating economic growth in developing countries and in particular, transition economies such as Albania is. During the last years, Albania experienced an increase in foreign investors’ interest in a wide range of sectors, with energy generation, telecommunication, cement production, mining, oil and industrial parks heading the list. However, the major obstacle factors for FDI inflows seem to remain the same: pervasive corruption, weak law enforcement, poor rule of law, lack of developed infrastructure, lack of a reliable energy supply and insufficiently defined property rights. Determining the factors that attract FDI, and furthermore identify the main characteristics of the host country’s economy, are essential to understand the reason of FDI inflows to a country or region. In the empirical perspective, various studies give different results. More specifically, this paper has focused on determining the factors for and against FDI in Albania.

Investments are crucial for economic growth. In the contemporary environment of intensive international financial connections and with the expansion of transnational companies a substantial part of investments are made by foreign companies. Beneficial factors for foreign direct investments are natural resources, geographical position, specifics of the labour force, the technology level and other specifics for certain country conditions. The intensive globalisation process in recent decades contributed to an easier movement of capital by cutting restrictions. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of FDIs in Serbia and Poland and their role in economic growth, as well as the effects they create in local economies. This paper will show a comparative analysis between Serbia and Poland regarding the impact of FDIs on the economic development of both countries.

Podejmowane są liczne próby estymacji efektów obecności kapitału zagranicznego w gospodarce kraju goszczącego w wymiarze wzrostu gospodarczego, poprawy efektywności gospodarowania zasobami, wzrostu zatrudnienia i płac, transferu wiedzy i technologii. Testy kointegracji potwierdziły występowanie długookresowej relacji pomiędzy zaangażowaniem kapitału zagranicznego w gospodarce (w przetwórstwie przemysłowym) a wartością dodaną brutto w gospodarce (w przetwórstwie przemysłowym)
The impact of Foreign Direct Investment on economic growth in host economies has been widely researched however empirical results are still inconclusive. There exist numerous attempts to estimate the effects of FDI on the host economy in terms of economic growth, improvement of resource efficiency utilizing, employment and wages growth, transfer of knowledge and technology. This study complies with new trend that assume that the impact of the presence of FDI on the economy should be analyzed on sector, industry or even firm level, which allows for a more accurate estimates in individual cases instead of presenting net effect at the macroeconomic level. In the study we decided to check on the example of Polish economy to what extent the effects of the presence of FDI in the manufacturing sector are similar to those at the macro level. We use for this purpose the annual data for the years 1997–2012, and time series modeling techniques, taking into account OLS regression, stationarity tests and cointegration. The obtained results indicate the importance of the presence of foreign capital for the economy as well as the manufacturing where a noticeable relationship is stronger in the second case. Not without significance is the fact that the positive effects of FDI occure in case of the economy after 2 periods, and in the case of manufacturing in one period. Cointegration tests confirmed the existence of a long-term relationship between FDI in the economy (in the sector) and GVA in the economy (in the sector).

Research background: The preconditions for attracting foreign investment are political stability and long-term capital investment, positively influencing the recipient country's development. During the crisis as well as in the unstable political environment, economic agents engage in speculative and risky acts for faster earnings. Purpose of the article: The paper aims to point out the importance of foreign direct investments (FDI) and other macroeconomic variables and their relationship with particular reference to the Croatian economy in 2002-2017. Methods: We use ADF test, development of the VECM model, testing of the stability of the VECM model, decomposition of the variance of the predictive errors of the variables, analysis of responses to unit orthogonal pulses. The vector correction auto-regression model (VECM) explores the long-term relationship between (FDI) and macroeconomic indicators in crisis time. Findings & Value-added: Applying the VECM model, we find that employment, export, and GDP variables are exogenous in the short term. The FDI variable is statistically significant and adjusts for the long-run equilibrium. Analyzing the responses to unit shocks, we conclude there is weak feedback of the observed variables and a weak effect of the observed variables in the Croatian economy. The FDI variable does not affect GDP, employment, and exports in Croatia due to poor macroeconomic management, corruption, regional development, inefficiency, and inefficient foreign direct investment structure.

Vietnam is an FDI success story. Since the early economic reforms initiated 30 years ago under renovation policy or “Doi Moi”, FDI has become a major driver of Vietnam’s economic development. Competitive wages, stable political and economic environments, sound infrastructure, a favorable geographic location as well as a robust investment and trade policy framework have led to dramatic increases in FDI inflows. By any measure, the country’s FDI attraction achievements have been exceptional. In 2017, FDI into Vietnam exceeded inflows into other ASEAN countries, except Singapore. As a percentage of GDP, Vietnam’s FDI inflows already exceed those of China and India (and all large ASEAN countries, except Malaysia). The year 2018 also witnessed Vietnam post a record in FDI disbursement (US$17.5 billion), against a backdrop of global declines in FDI flows during 2018 of 23 percent (Source: UNCTAD 2018).
