Przedmiotem tekstu jest przedstawienie polskiego dyskursu definicyjnego fantasy jako konwencji literatury fantastycznej – od momentu jej zaistnienia za pośrednictwem przekładu Tolkienowskiego Władcy Pierścieni w latach 1961–1961 i pierwszych prób jej zdefiniowania do momentu ukształtowania się zjawiska i przejęcia jej dyskursu definicyjnego przez polskich autorów fantasy w latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX wieku. Dobór wypowiedzi znaczących i ich interpretacja zostały dokonane w odniesieniu do teorii dyskursu Michela Foucaulta i teorii pola Pierre’a Bourdieu.
The aim of this text is to present a Polish definitional discourse on fantasy as a convention of fantastic literature, from the moment of its appearance through to the translation of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in the years 1961–1963. The first attempts to define this term, to the moment when the phenomenon took shape and the definitional discourse was taken over by Polish fantasy authors in the 1990s are also discussed. The selection of significant statements and their interpretation will be made with reference to Michel Foucault’s theory of discourse and Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory.

This article analyses the nature of urban fantasy by aggregating the claims, suggestions, and observations made by several different accounts of what urban fantasy is. These accounts comprise six scholarly sources and four sources written by people who are producers and purveyors of urban fantasy. An eleventh “account” is made up of the impressions conveyed by a vast number of book covers identified through Google Image Search. These eleven accounts are analysed with regard to their views on worlds and settings, cities and urbanity, central characters, and the sources of fantastic elements. Finally, the article presents how three major threads in the accounts reveal that urban fantasy has a central, thematic concern with the Unseen. This Unseen is largely related to a social Other that portrays unpleasant aspects of urban life, such as criminality, homelessness, addiction, prostitution, and physical and sexual abuse.

Czasopismo „Fantastyka” ukazywało się w latach 1982-1990, w 1990 roku zostało przemianowane na „Nową Fantastykę” i jest w dalszym ciągu kontynuacją pierwowzoru. „Fantastyka” to chyba najpopularniejszy polski miesięcznik poświęcony literaturze fantastycznej oraz science fiction. Było to pierwsze pismo o takiej tematyce w kraju, a nawet w całym bloku wschodnim, dzięki czemu bardzo szybko zyskało fanów. Pierwszym redaktorem naczelnym był Adam Hollanek, obecnie funkcję tę pełni Jakub Winiarski. „Fantastyka” promowała gatunek fantasy. Miesięcznik publikował opowiadania, a nawet całe powieści zarówno polskich, jak i zagranicznych twórców. Można tam było znaleźć również felietony i artykuły o tematyce popularnonaukowej. Czasopismo to już od pierwszych numerów zyskało ogromną popularność. W roku 1990, kiedy zmienił się wydawca (a w ślad za tym tytuł), pismo przeszło znaczną metamorfozę, zmieniono format, zwiększono liczbę stron, urósł dział publicystyczny. W roku 2003 przybyło też barw. W „Fantastyce” swoją karierę literacką rozpoczynał Andrzej Sapkowski, opowiadanie Wiedźmin ukazało się w numerze 12 z 1986 roku. W roku 2007 z okazji 25-lecia pisma, Minister Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego – Michał Ujazdowski – uhonorował czasopismo srebrnym medalem „Gloria Artis”. Współpracownicy „Nowej Fantastyki” również zostali wyróżnieni.
The magazine “Fantasy” was published in the years of 1982-1990, in 1990 it was renamed into “New Fantasy” [„Nowa Fantastyka”] and became a continuation of the original one. “Fantasy” seems to be the most popular Polish monthly periodical dedicated to fantasy and science fiction literature. It was the first journal concentrating on such themes in Poland, and even in the whole eastern Europe, therefore it gained fans very quickly after its debut. The first editor in chief was Adam Hollanek, now – Jakub Winiarski. “Fantasy” popularized fantasy genre. The monthly’s issues brought stories, various writings or even entire novels both by Polish and foreign authors. Some articles on popular science could have been found there, too. The magazine has reached high popularity since the first number was printed. In 1990, when the publisher was changed and the name of the magazine was altered (as mentioned above), the periodical’s overview got a considerable metamorphosis – format, number of pages, and news section have been extended. Since 2003 more colourful pages have been added. Andrzej Sapkowski started his literary career here – The Witcher [Wiedźmin] story appeared in 1986 (nr. 12). On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the magazine activity (2007) the Minister of Culture and National Heritage – Michał Ujazdowski – awarded the editorial board with “Gloria Artis” silver medal. Collaborators of “New Fantasy” were honored as well.

Fantasy świata wtórnego nie bez przyczyny uchodzi  w oczach literaturoznawców i krytyków za jeden z najbardziej schematycznych, repetytywnych i komercyjnych gatunków współczesnej literatury niemimetycznej. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje próbę rozeznania czy (i do jakiego stopnia) funkcjonują w obrębie tego gatunku teksty, w których w miarę wyraźnie można wyróżnić swoiście rozumianą funkcję estetyczną (i czy może stanowić ona dominantę utworu), jak również czy (i na ile) możliwe są w tej literaturze różnego rodzaju eksperymenty formalne oraz jaką pełnią one funkcję.
The secondary world fantasy is quite justifiably regarded by scholars and critics as one of the most schematic, repetitive and commercial genres of contemporary non-mimetic literature. The present paper undertakes a preliminary discussion whether (and to what extent) this genre includes texts in which one can clearly discern a specifically understood aesthetic function (and whether this function can become a text’s structural dominant). The article also addresses the question whether various formal experiments are possible in this kind of literature.

How to translate culture? The select fragments of the Polish and English translations of the short story Der Sandmann by E.T.A Hoffmann The article discusses the problems encountered by the translator when trying to convey the meaning of the source literary text into the target language. The analysed texts are fragments of the Polish and English translations of the short story Der Sandmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the leading representative of late German Romanticism, with the special attention paid to their correspondence with the source text. The analysed translations are the Polish one by Felicjan Faleński, made in 1867 and the English one by John Oxenford, made in 1844. For the purpose of analysing the text, the article employs Todorov’s theory of the fantastic for building an interpretation model of the Romantic short story Der Sandmann.

The present paper aims at discussing What Sunny Saw in the Flames by Nnedi Okorafor as a fantasy novel for children and young adults focused upon the question of self-identification. In the framework of fiction for younger audiences, the fantasy mode becomes a tool which allows to examine the topics important to young readers, such as identity and their place within the society, by providing a confrontation with the Other. The example of Nnedi Okorafor’s book, known in the USA as Akata Witch, shows how the instrumentation of a fantasy novel enables an exposition of the process in which the protagonist grows on the intellectual, emotional and cultural levels. In other words, the fantasy mode aids in the exploration of Sunny’s American-Nigerian origin, her albinism, coming of age and the comprehension of her identity. Simultaneously, as additional topics emerge from the analysis, it becomes visible that the question of the Self cannot be separated from the concept of the Other, with the lesson of empathy and respect for what is different.

The article Reading It Still Again. A Few Words on Fairy Tales in the World of the Witcher discusses selected issues related to short stories from the volume The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski, featuring the famous character of the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Offering a comparative close reading of The Lesser Evil and The Grain of Truth, Karolina Zastępska proceeds with contextualising the terms of, respectively, a fairy tale and a fantasy. By doing so, the author (re)approaches the narrative device of retelling, understood as here as a renarration of fairy tales, legends, themes and threads both from literary and cultural texts.

The present paper aims at analyzing one of the most recent Divov’s stories entitled Рыжий пес Иж (2016). The text is interesting both due to its literary genre hybridity (it embraces elements of a melodrama, a horror story, a detective story, urban fantasy and a fairy tale) and the topics it touches upon (especially animalistic issues). Divov deploys the well-known literary and cinematic motif of a soul penetrating an object and creates a story of motorcycle haunted by a dog’s soul. Due to its original solutions (inter alia referring to films) Divov’s story is an interesting work illustrating the permanent interrelations between literatures and movies as well as the author’s exploration within this scope. Moreover, the manner of creating the animal character and placing it within the structure allow for including Divov’s story into the group of contemporary literary works reflecting the proanimal trends in Russian culture.

The article concerns the use of the literary motif of katabasis, or journey to the underworld, in two pivotal works of the contemporary genre of high, or heroic, fantasy: J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. The first part of the argument briefly discusses the tradition of the motif in the classical epic poetry and in the later Christian tradition. Subsequently the argument traces the role of katabasis in the articulation of the respective authors’ concepts of the heroic quest.

Arthuriana has a long history of adaptation and appropriation in medieval and contemporary works, and the tradition of such textual borrowing and reworking continues in contemporary “genre” novels, particularly those that invoke associations with knights, honor, and codes of chivalry. One such example are the novels and short stories of the Dragonlance setting. Sturm Brightblade is positioned as a knight who adheres to a code of honor and is given Arthurian character traits, narrative arcs, and a backstory by the various authors that have fleshed out his history. The texts in the Dragonlance setting knowingly use appropriated elements from Middle English Arthurian works and assign them to Sturm Brightblade to give him proper positioning as a knight that would fit in with Arthur’s legendary Round Table.

The article discusses the problem of classifying gothic fairy-tales and horror in modern children’s literature, mentally connected and relations between three genre forms: a fairy-tales, horror and fantasy (weird tale, vampire’s story, terrible and comic fantasy). The issue of the perception and reception of gothic – recognizable and popular – elements and the convention of gothic faerie in children’s fiction. Popularity of horror story for adult readers contributed to the fact that in the years 2000-2015 increased a number of children’s books referring to the horror novel and incredible story. The transfer of formula is connected with the repetition of motifs, parody, using the gallery of monsters. Children’s heroes of horror for immature audience are confronted with anxiety represented by monsters, experiencing numerous adventures, oscillating between horror and comic. New experiences lead to gain valuable skills and meeting with monsters leads to self -acceptance and self-development.

Fantasy literature in the 1980s underwent a revisionist change, which resulted in the emergence of a number of subgenres that challenged the dominant Tolkien model of fantasy writing. One such subgenre, which continues in popularity today, is urban fantasy. Urban fantasy is distinguished by real-world urban settings unsettled by the presence of the supernatural and the non-rational. The classification of the subgenre has predominantly been commercial or industry-based, with little critical or theoretical evaluation undertaken to define or establish its parameters. Within a limited frame of reference the article Theorizing the Emergent Subgenre of Urban Fantasy aims at offering a classificatory framework that identifies the distinctive elements of urban fantasy to further the generic understanding of unique fantasy subgenres.

The aim of the following paper is to prove that the tools applied by phenomenology of religion to the study of sacrum, i.e. various religious phenomena and manifestations appearing in our world, can be successfully applied to the study of sacrum present in the secondary worlds of modern fantasy fi ction. On the other hand, in an age when politics is reduced to simple administration, there is little room for imagination and the new possibilities it brings. By illuminating the ambiguous nature of the imaginative act I would like to show how a Christian vision of politics may help to understand both sides of this paradox. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: There are two radically distinct ways to carry out imagination depending on the subject’s fundamental attitude. Thus I will elaborate through a phenomenological analysis how this difference is present in all dimension of political imagination concerning the following essential criteria: a) the focus on the intentional object, b) methodology, c) temporal structure. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: If the act of fantasy is really that negative in all these aspects why do philosophers prefer it to the act of imagination? I argue that historically speaking the pivotal point is the Kantian philosophy and it is the Kantian heritage that influenced Feuerbach to lay the new fundaments of political fantasy. RESEARCH RESULTS: Through interpreting a crucial passage of Feuerbach’s The Essence of Christianity I show that the way Kant and Feuerbach transformed the concept of a receptive and obedient imagination focused on the Christian mystery are fatal for political philosophy. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: I insist that contemporary Christian politics is once again on a cross‑road, either it remains captivated by fantasy or it gets liberated by becoming true imagination. Imagination is centered on the mystery that illuminates the whole sphere of politics in all of its horizontal and vertical dimensions and thus allows for a radically new beginning of political reflection.

W niniejszym tekście zdecydowaliśmy się przyjrzeć bliżej trzem wybranym figurom zaczerpniętym ze słowiańskiego imaginarium communis: wiedźmie (czarownicy / babie-jadze), wojowniczce / przywódczyni, kobiecie-demonie, by spróbować odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jaka wizja kobiet / kobiecości in genere wyłania się z analizowanego gatunku?
Slavic fantasy has gained enormous popularity in the Polish publishing market over the last two decades. It has been noticed and classified by researchers, having developed various subtypes. This diversity of implementation of the Slavic theme contributed to the creation of significantly diverse female characters. In this text, we have decided to take a closer look at three selected characters taken from the Slavic imaginarium communis: the witch (hag/ besom); female warrior/leader; woman-demon, in order to try to answer the question – what depiction of women/femininity in general emerges from the analysed genre?

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane teksty literackie wydane w ciągu ostatniego dziesięciolecia, starając się odpowiedzieć na pytanie o punkty styczne między fantastyką a kryminałem oraz o to, czy można już mówić o nowym podgatunku: „słowiańskim kryminale”. Punktem wyjścia w analizach i interpretacjach utworów było założenie, iż tendencja do eksperymentowania w literaturze przybrała na sile po 2000 roku w ramach postmodernistycznych gier i zabaw tekstem na osi autor – czytelnik. W wyniku kolejnych przekształceń dokonujących się w ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci zarówno fantastyka, jak i kryminał zmierzały coraz bardziej w stronę synkretyzmu gatunkowego, stosując wzajemne intertekstualne nawiązania, przenikania swoich motywów, tematów i wątków. W artykule posiłkowano się ustaleniami z zakresu komparatystyki i intertekstualności.
Contemporary authors have decided to combine the two most popular genres of the 20th and 21st centuries – crime fiction and fantasy – in one novel (or a novel series). The tendency for such experimentation became stronger after the year 2000 as part of postmodern games and having fun with texts as well as on the author-reader axis. As a result of following transformations taking place over the last decades, both fantasy and crime fiction have moved successfully closer towards genre syncretism, taking advantage of mutual intertextual references, permeating their motives, themes, and threads. In the article, we try to answer the question of what are the points of contact between these two seemingly distant literary genres. We analyze two works, assigned to a completely new sub-genre: Slavic crime fiction. What makes them "Slavic"? Why is this sub-genre becoming more and more popular?

The article endeavours to present the most significant features of Anna Kańtoch’s prose works. Not only is the author in question capable of utilizing various conventions of popular literature, such as: fantasy, science-fiction, and detective stories, but also to mingle them and come up with “hybrid-genres” that are difficult to pigeonhole (Czarne, Niepełnia). Spatial and temporal changeability characterize the novels and short stories of the Katowice-based writer, making the world depicted therein a place existing “in-between,” and moreover, involving both – brutality of rules that world is governed by as well as palpable desire of a proper moral order, which does not always eventually gains the upper hand.

The article discusses issues connected with Slavic fantasy literature presented as a reflectionof mythical thinking. In the article, the fantasy term is used to describe a genre of literature or film, in whichone of the most important parts of the story, keynote, time, place of action, characters andcircumstances will be magic and supernatural phenomena.The Slavic fantasy appeared in Russia and Poland in a similar period and it still developstoday. One of the factors that influenced the development of this genre was the search for Slavicroots, national identity. Those fantasy stories and novels are writings which clearly refer to thehistory and culture of the old Slavic peoples . The Slavic fantasy contains unparelled care for therealities of the epoch which is why it is sometimes called parahistoric.The article presents the typology of the Slavic fantasy by Tadeusz A. Olszański, according towhom there are three ways of presenting the Slavic plot: language stylization, culture stylizationand the so called independent worlds.Slavic fantasy is based on broad ethnographic material, especially Slavic demonology. Thecharacters of gods, spirits and beings often have a positive character.The mythical thinking in literature can be seen on several levels. On the level of the worlddescribed it takes the form of a prophecy, intervention of the gods into the lives of mortals. On theconstruction level, it shows in the way the narration is made. Third level is the heroes and theircompanions - in that case the most native mythological element of Polish and Russian fantasy isthe said demonology.

This article proposes a reflection on a tale that can be a bridge between “literature for children and teens” and “literature for adults”: The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily by Dino Buzzati. It offers a link between fable and fantasy novel and contains all of the elements of the fairy tale that Vladimir Propp planned in 1928: loss, departure, challenges to overcome, reward, and return. It is closely connected to its historical reality (the period after the Second World War), but at the same time it detaches itself from that period through the fantastic element. In short, the book is a mirror of Buzzati’s literary personality and the first literary work of a restless but sensitive author who always felt linked to painting and writing, to adults and children, to reality and evasion.
Il presente contributo propone una riflessione su un racconto da sempre in grado di fare da ponte tra “letteratura per bambini e ragazzi” e “letteratura per adulti”: La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia di Dino Buzzati è infatti un romanzo di confine, un anello di congiunzione tra fiaba e romanzo fantastico. Ha in sé tutti gli elementi della fiaba magistralmente gerarchizzati da Vladimir Propp nel 1928 (mancanza, partenza, prove, premio, ritorno), è strettamente connesso alla realtà storica del suo tempo (il secondo dopoguerra) e al tempo stesso se ne distacca con garbo tramite l’elemento fantastico. È, insomma, specchio della personalità letteraria di Dino Buzzati, la prima prova di un autore inquieto e insensibile, da sempre legato da un doppio filo a pittura e scrittura, adulti e bambini, contemporaneità ed evasione.

It is not a coincidence that urban fantasy is being identified with modern, futuristic metropolises. On its streets, two worlds are juxtaposed: the real and the magical. Unlike the first one, the latter is concealed in shadows, hiding elves, vampires, and other magical creatures from the watchful eyes of ordinary citizens. Only a handful of informed humans have the right to step into this world, which is presented only to the select few. The author of the article Guns and Hats, or a Drowner on a Bicycle: On the (Retro)Industrial Adaptation of Urban Fantasy Subgenre distinguishes between three main tropes of the eponymous convention: a presence of the city, a coexistence of magical and empirical world, and an influence of organisations guarding the secret of the otherworld. All three mentioned tropes are exemplified in two contemporary fantasy novels—Adam Przechrzta’s Adept (The Adept) and Charlie Fletcher’s The Oversight, both set in the nineteenth-century fictionalised reality, which bears resemblance to urban fantasy subgenre. In the end, nineteenth-century city turns out to be the best locale to set a fantasy story that addresses the primary sense of urbanization.

Opis:

Works belonging to the world literary canon are widely commented on by literary scholars. The editorial aspects of the editions of the same works, however, do not have such thorough studies. The discussion of the editorial features of children’s publications seems to be all the more important because improperly selected typographic parameters may significantly impair the quality of the reading experience and discourage reading itself. The article indicates the importance of particular architectural elements of the Polish editions of two masterpieces of children’s literature, Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland, which appeared in Poland after 1989. The indication of specific typographical sizes and layouts of illustrations makes it possible to determine reading competences which should be possessed by a reader designed by the publisher, and thus also to prove whether a particular edition has been given an appropriate editorial design for the recipient.

The paper entitled How to rule in times of Victorian postapocalypse? Issue of power in the „Frostpunk” video game attempts to characterize power in a fictitious world of Victorian postapocalypse. The text has been divided into four thematic sub-chapters. Part one, a Victorian postapocalypse, explains the use of the term Victorian postapo in modern fantasy, and the short genesis of the post-apocalyptic convention. It was derived from classic horror novels such as Marry Shelley's The Last Man, Herbert's G. Wells's The war of the Worlds. These novels can be called the first works of the Victorian postapocalypse. The next subsection, Frostpunk, is an introduction to the world of the game, its mechanics and the presented story. The next part entitled „The government of souls” contains the characteristics of the Polish video game „Frostpunk”. This game is one of the latest steampunk convention works. It has been discussed in the context of the issue of power. The presented characteristics of the system, the prevailing rules and communication at the level of the overseer-society bear the marks of the „state of emergency” (Agamben). Existing force in the game is one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal of the overseer, and that gives him full control. The reference to Foucalt's term of biopolitics is important the context of postapocaliptic society (Nijakowski). The survival of humanity is the priority of the survivors. Deprived of rules, power and self-organization, people strive to create a new system, even if it brings with it the necessity of getting rid of one's own personality. Frostpunk, which is a steampunk game, appeals not only to the stylistics, but also to the ideological assumptions characteristic of its first wave of this convention. It appeals primarily to „punk” rebellion. The old model of power proves unable to function in postsociety and falls, replaced by a new one, still imperfect but flexible and constantly evolving, which is described in the postapocalyptic reflection part. Frostpunk read in this way is a reflection on the possible development of events in times after extermination, as well as on the methods and means that human beings can reach in order to survive.

on-existent before the late 1980s, in recent years urban fantasy / paranormal romance has become the prevailing form of the monstrous Gothic in popular culture. In little more than two decades, urban fantasy has evolved from striking new genre innovations, coming to constitute a set of nowfamiliar genre conventions. Yet while urban fantasy has risen meteorically in popularity, especially in the last decade, it remains surprisingly understudied as a coherent genre. McLennon in the article Defining Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance: Crossing Boundaries of Genre, Media, Self and Other in New Supernatural Worlds provides a clear definition and history of urban fantasy / paranormal romance as a genre. She argues that this genre is both formally and thematically concerned with destabilising new Gothic boundaries—boundaries of genre, of media, of self and Other. Finally, McLennon suggests that these formal and thematic challenges to boundaries offer one explanation for this genre’s broad popularity. The article thus seeks to provide a platform from which we can better analyse and understand both this genre as a whole, and its individual texts, across a variety of media.

The present paper is devoted to the question of the past in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in reference to the Gothic Novel and the way it approaches this subject. As an introduction I provide some background as to the definition and origins of both gothic and fantasy genres. I want to prove that they share many similarities and point out the connections between them. In the main part of my paper I present the creation of the past in the Gothic Novel and in The Lord of the Rings, showing that the past plays a very important role on both extratextual – as an inspiration for a writer – and intratextual levels – as a source of nostalgia, fascination and fear. This article was based on my bachelor’s thesis Elements of the Gothic convention in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Neil Gaiman’s urban fantasy novel Neverwhere revolves around some problematic aspects prevalent in the contemporary world, such as an iniquitous discrepancy between social classes or a problematic attitude to history. The artistic universes created by Gaiman are instrumental in conveying a complex condition of postmodern society. Although one of the represented worlds, London Above, is realistic and the other, London Below, is fantastic, both are suggestive of the contemporary social situation, citizens’ shared values and aspirations. Only when considered together can they reveal a comprehensive image of what the community accepts and what it rejects as no longer consistent with commonly held beliefs. The disparities in the representations of London Above and London Below refer to the division into the present and the past. The realistically portrayed metropolis is the embodiment of contemporary times. The fantastic London Below epitomises all that is ignored or rejected by London Above. The present study is going to discuss the main ideas encoded in the semiotic spaces created by Neil Gaiman, on the basis of postmodern theories. Ursula K. Le Guin was an American writer, a master of science fiction and fantasy. She was the author of the famous Earthsea trilogy, in which magic remains the pivotal idea. In the novels, Le Guin links immense, yet dangerous, supernatural abilities with the idea of Equlibrium within realms, a principle that governs the universe. The paper is an attempt to elucidate how certain visions of life after death are constellated within Le Guin’s fantasy writings. Visibly inspired by Eastern mythologies and religious doctrines, the author does not steer clear from the vision rooted in Western traditions. The ongoing debate is an attempt at clarifying the universal concept of soul and mankind.
Ursula K. Le Guin była amerykańską pisarką, mistrzynią science fiction i fantasy. Jako autorka słynnej trylogii Earthsea, stworzyła świat rządzony prawami magii. W swym powieściach Le Guin łączy zarówno wszechmocne jak i niebezpieczne zdolności magiczne z ideą równowagi w rzeczywistości, będącej głównym prawem świata przedstawionego. Artykuł jest próbą przedstawienia wizji życia po śmierci w dziełach fantasy Le Guin. Choć zainspirowana wschodnimi mitologiami i doktrynami religijnymi, autorka nie omija tradycyjnej wizji mającej swój początek w kulturze zachodu. Przedstawiona w jej powieściach debata jest próbą wyjaśnienia uniwersalnej koncepcji duszy i ludzkości.

The Lord of the Rings, ever since its publication, has been something of a nuisance to traditional literary critics and has been maligned often and with zest. The main reason for these strong—and often irrational—reactions are primarily due to the fact that The Lord of the Rings does not fit into the literary mainstream and challenges standard critical assumptions about what a work of twentieth-century fiction should be like. The standard tool-kit of the literary critic seems utterly inadequate. Mediaevalists, in contrast, have often taken a more sympathetic view of Tolkien’s work. Honegger’s article Tolkien Through the Eyes of a Mediaevalist will therefore present several ‘mediaeval’ approaches towards Tolkien, evaluate their critical value and discuss their contribution towards a more adequate understanding of Tolkien’s literary work.

Celem tego jest przekierowanie uwagi teorii literatury na ignorowane dotąd aspekty twórczości artystycznej, takie jak choćby światotwórstwo (w miejsce fabułotwórstwa), imersja (w miejsce uważnego czytania) i performatywna światogra (w miejsce traktowania świata jako tła wydarzeń fabularnych). Wszystkie te zjawiska postuluje się włączyć w obręb postklasycznych studiów narratologicznych wykorzystywanych do analizy fantasy, science fiction oraz innych form fantastyki na przestrzeni różnych mediów.
The article introduces the reader to the phenomenon of the so-called world-centeredness as well as to the world-centered turn in contemporary narrative theory. Having delineated cultural, economic, and transmedial aspects of the turn in question, the author discusses the problem of academic discrimination against fantasy, science fiction, and similar genres in Polish literary theory of the 20th and 21st centuries. This aims for redirecting the focus of literary theory towards more neglected aspects of artistic production such as world-building (instead of storytelling), immersion (instead of closereading), and performatic worldplay (instead of backgrounding the diegetic world). All these new phenomena are suggested for inclusion in postclassical narrative studies applied to analysing fantasy, science fiction, and other forms of fantastika across the media.

Role-playing games (RPG) provide a great opportunity to research creative word-formation. This article concentrateson RPG systems and represented worlds as well as proper nouns that can be found in them. The author presents the history of RPG, explains the core elements of the games (such as Game Master or RPG session) and compares the most popular and important systems. The article also explains how players create the names for their characters. The analysis is based on the examples taken from the Fallathan’s Chronicles game.
Artykuł dotyczy systemów RPG, światów przedstawionych oraz onimii w grach tego typu. Przedłożono nie tylko historię gier role-playing, lecz także opisano najbardziej znane, a zarazem kluczowe systemy RPG. W artykule wyjaśniono również, czym są gry RPG, jakie elementy składają się na rozgrywkę, np. kim jest Mistrz Gry lub co to jest sesja. Na przykładzie imion z gry Kroniki Fallathanu autorka wskazała, w jaki sposób gracze tworzą miana swoich postaci.

The article is ispired by the pioneering book Allotopie by Krzysztof M. Maj, which describes the feeling of immersion in fictional world evoked by fantasy fiction. Maj chooses the immersion strategy of reception over the predominant mimetic interpretation, which he sees as incomplete in that it omits the fundamental for allotopy act of world creation. Immersion reflects the idiosyncrasy of creation and genre reception. Moreover, Maj’s book does not fail to address the traditional questions about the value of fantasy fiction.

Niderlandzka literatura fantastyczna rozwija się i zajmuje coraz bardziej eksponowaną pozycję w literaturze i kulturze niderlandzkiej. Może to potwierdzać między innymi rosnące zainteresowanie twórczością pisarzy niderlandzkich swiecie. W artykule przedstawiono historię oraz tendencje w zakresie przekładów niderlandzkiej literatury fantastycznej na język polski. Omówiono także instytucje życia literackiego, podgatunki oraz formy publikacji niderlandzkiej fantastyki w języku polskim, zarysowując na tej podstawie tendencje panujące w polskiej kulturze literackiej.
Dutch fantastic literature is showing clear development in the formalisation and strengthening of its position in Dutch literature and culture. This can also be seen in the growing interest being paid to Dutch writers in foreign literature markets. This article shows the history and trends in the translation of Dutch fantastic literature into Polish. I discuss the different literary organisations, the subgenres, and the forms of the publication of Dutch fantastic literature in Polish in order to illustrate the tendencies of the Polish literary sphere.

This paper focuses on a short work of fiction written in the 1940s by the Croatian Jew, Hinko Gottlieb. The manuscript of the book was found in one of the Jerusalem archives and,about seventy years later was, prepared for publication in Croatia in 2021.  Undermining the readers’ previous habits, the book uncharacteristically problematises the Holocaust. Gottlieb uses humour as his major aesthetic device to describe internment. the story may also be ascribed to the fantasy genre, or to speculative fiction to be more precise. The purpose of the thought experiment presented here is to examine (in prison conditions) the possibilities that the socalled space capacitor has to offer. Besides acknowledging the occurrence in the text of such categories as science fiction, grotesque and surrealism, the article endeavours to answer the question about their use in the story of the Holocaust.

This article examines the literary series of Inquisitore Eymerich by Valerio Evangelisti, a variegated macronarrative, which, resisting generic classification, introduces innovation to the panorama of contemporary Italian fantasy. Departing from the analysis of the salient features of the series such as intertextuality, hybridization, storiographic metafiction, and transfictionality, the article examines closely the areas of postmodern narration and inquires into the role of the fantastic element in Italian literature. Evangelisti makes the most of postmodern narrative strategies and of fantasy’s ability to penetrate various media in order to provide a tool of critical reflection on human history with an emphasis on the phenomenology of power. By interweaving different literary genres and inviting readers to produce their own interpretations in form of fan fiction, Evangelisti creates a new type of committed narrative, post-fantasy, which presents a new conception of postmodern narrative, one that overcomes the barrier between the literary fiction and the genre fiction.

The article John Crowley’s “Engine Summer”: A Postmodern Vision of the Processual Construction of Identity analyses the eponymous novel as pivoted around the narrative’s role in constructing both individual and collective identity. Drawing from Mieke Bal’s narrative theory, as well as a number of established (such as paratextuality) and emerging theoretical concepts (Piotr Kubiński’s emersion), Gancarczyk emphasises the multifacetedness of novelistic references, including the stereotypisation of the Other and top-down control of social relationships. Furthermore, Engine Summer is interpreted here as drawing the reader’s attention to the medium itself and to the embodied text which co-creates narrative identity, allowing for its inscription and transmission—an idea literally realised in a postapocalyptic world of the novel. Finally, Gancarczyk shows how Campbell’s concept of monomyth reverberates in Crowley’s narrative, proving pivotal for the overall interpretation, indicating the active role of the medium and narrative subjectivity in constructing the meaning.

Historia opowiedziana przez Jacka Dukaja w powieści Inne pieśni koncentruje się wokół kategorii formy jako porządku istnienia, myślenia, działania i postrzegania. Autor świadomie podejmuje Gombrowiczowską koncepcję Formy, uaktualniając ją w kontekście odkryć nauki i w filozofii, na co pozwala mu popularna i pojemna forma gatunkowa fantasy. Poza obecnością w powieści różnych konstrukcji gatunkowych jej struktura opiera się na mechanizmach mentalnych, którymi posługują się inne dziedziny poznania, fizyka i genetyka. W czasie lektury czytelnik dochodzi do przekonania, że forma stanowi zarówno odbicie mechanizmów poznawczych, jak i sama staje się narzędziem poznania i rozumienia. Powtórzenie schematu literackiego (np. gatunku) określa strategię twórcy i nie prowadzi do powstania kliszy, lecz jest innowacyjne poznawczo, artystycznie i estetycznie. Wykorzystując, wydawałoby się przeciwne rodowody (fantasy i ideę Formy Gombrowicza), Dukaj zawiera pakt z odbiorcą. Prowadząc go w labirynty ludzkiej świadomości, zawiesza niewiarę, by pobudzić pracę myśli lub zwielokrotnić jego życie w imaginacji powtórzenia.
Jacek Dukaj’s prose is placed at the borderlines of literary genres, among science fiction, fantasy, saga, and forms of re-written, re-factional literature. It is governed by two mental mechanisms: the “game of make-believe” and the game with a reader and the philosophical awareness of Form. The creative re-writing occurring in the novel Other Songs is based on reference to the battle fought between Synthesis and Analysis from Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz, to Aristotelean conjectures on Form and Matter, maybe also to Paul Dirac’s physics and the electronic visions of penetration and dispersal, which are revealed by the short story The Cathedral, adapted for the screen by Tomasz Bagiński.

Powrót „mody na folklor” i nawrót fascynacji sztuką ludową dostrzegalne są dziś w rozmaitych przestrzeniach oraz tekstach kultury. Wzorem państw zachodnich, które „odzyskują” współcześnie dawne wierzenia, obyczaje i obrzędy, Polska oraz inne kraje słowiańskie przeżywają powtórnie „chłopomanię”. Te trendy znalazły swoje odbicie także we współczesnej literaturze fantastycznej. W ciągu ostatnich dwudziestu lat powstało wiele powieści nawiązujących do życia i obrzędowości mieszkańców wsi (często z okolic Podlasia). Ludowe wierzenia, żywe i kultywowane, stają się w nich punktem wyjścia do skonstruowania zaskakującej i pomysłowej fabuły. W artykule porównano „folkowe” powieści, które łączy postać głównej bohaterki – szeptuchy, wiedźmy, znachorki – będącej niejako symbolem tego, co wiejskie, „z ludu”, „z gminu”.
The return of ‘folklore fashion’ and the renewed fascination with folk art can be seen at present in various spaces and culturebased texts. Following in the footsteps of Western countries that are now ‘reclaiming’ old beliefs, customs, and rites, Poland and other Slavic countries are reliving their ‘peasant mania’. These trends have also been reflected in contemporary fantasy literature; over the past twenty years, many novels have referred to the life and rituals of village dwellers (often from the Podlasie region). Folk-based beliefs, which are part of everyday life and culture, become the starting point for the construction of a surprising and ingenious storyline. This article compares the ‘folk’ novels that are linked through the type of main character – whisperers, witches, faith healers – who in some way symbolise the rural, the folk, the commoner-related.

Artykuł przedstawia próbę rozpatrzenia zagadnień związanych z brutalizacją polskiej literatury fantasy oraz prezentowanych w niej światów z punktu widzenia kulturowej teorii literatury. W tekście przeanalizowane zostały kulturowe konteksty tego zjawiska, takie jak izolacja polskiej fantasy w początkach jej istnienia od wzorców rozwijanych na gruncie anglosaskim, tabuizacja śmierci naturalnej w przestrzeni publicznej, prowadząca do pornografizacji przedstawień przemocy oraz śmierci w kulturze popularnej, czy kulturowy aspekt opisów ciała doświadczającego przemocy. Podkreślenie relacji literatury z kontekstami pozaliterackimi pozwala zauważyć, że polska literatura fantasy częściowo przejęła funkcję marginalizowanych w polskiej kulturze tekstów grozy.
This article attempts to analyze the brutalization of Polish fantasy literature using cultural literary theory. This article shows cultural contexts that influence the brutalization of Polish fantasy literature and the worlds it creates: isolation from English literature influences the beginnings, especially the taboo of natural death in the public space, resulting in very graphic, almost pornographic images, and the cultural aspect of literary descriptions of bodies experiencing violence. Emphasizing the relationship between literature and its non-literary contexts leads to the conclusion that Polish fantasy literature in part took over some functions of horror works, which are marginalized in Polish culture.

Croatian speculative fiction in the last quarter of the century has been dominated by the city of Zagreb. There are three anthologies depicting the capital of Croatia and visions of its future: Zagreb 2004 (1995), Zagreb 2014 (1998) and Zagreb 2094 (2004). Also, in Croatian dystopian fiction, the popularity of which has grown rapidly since 2010, the city becomes a metaphor for the problem of exclusion and deep inequalities between the centre and the periphery. The changes in the literary image of Zagreb over the last twenty-five years illustrate not only the changing perception of an urban space and different ways of experiencing the city by writers, but also depict the evolution of speculative fiction in Croatia by distinguishing its most important elements: the growth of the importance of local motifs and places, as well as blurring the rigid genre boundaries and the evolution towards the so-called slipstream fiction. Thanks to the analysis of literary images of Zagreb, questions about the attitude of fantasy literature of that time towards the main contemporary issues can be raised. The article finally offers a possibility to define either the subversive or conciliatory character of fantasy works in the context of the most dominant ideologies of that time.

The article A Fantastic Crucible: Genological and Cultural Syncretism in Ben Aaronovitch Urban Fantasy Series “Rivers of London” explores generic and cultural syncretism in the eponymous cycle. Having defined urban fantasy, the author proceeds to place emphasis on the overwhelming heterogeneity adopted within the genre, which suggests its openness to various influences, transformations and modifications. In this particular case the elements of urban fantasy and the criminal novel have been successfully incorporated to create a harmonious whole. Examining the vision of a city of London as a melting pot, Borowska-Szerszun argues that the fantastic level of the text has been construed as just one more component of multicultural London, in which different cultures, nationalities and religions meet. Aaronovitch’s cycle is shown, therefore, as breaking the predominance of whiteness in the fantasy genre, and introducing, instead, social and cultural diversity, which reveals the potential of urban fantasy to deal with difficult issues of our times and provide a valid commentary about contemporary reality.

Niniejsze opracowanie poświęcone jest zagadnieniu relacji między duchowością a medium gier wideo, zwłaszcza zaś możliwości rozwijania i nauczania chrześcijańskiej duchowości z wykorzystaniem już istniejących gier. Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie warunków koniecznych do tego, by określoną produkcję można było uznać za użyteczną dla rozwoju duchowości chrześcijańskiej. Chodzi o to, by struktura narracyjna tych gier skonstruowana była w sposób umożliwiający funkcjonowanie w jej ramach kluczowych dla rozumienia duchowości wartości nadprzyrodzonych, a także by kierowani przez gracza protagoniści gier odnosili się w ramach ich fabuł do wspomnianych wartości. Zastosowana metodologia nawiązuje do badań Antona Karla Kozlovica i polega na wyszukiwaniu religijnych podtekstów w grach wideo, które nie mają czysto religijnego charakteru. Przeanalizowane zostają trzy przykłady duchowości w grach wideo: Final Fantasy XV, Night in the Woods oraz Journey. Wysunięta zostanie również wątpliwość co do tego, czy w procesie grania duchowość gracza zaangażowana jest bezpośrednio, czy jedynie poprzez immersyjne zapośredniczenie. Z przeprowadzonych analiz wyciągnięte zostaną wnioski na temat możliwości kształtowania duchowości chrześcijańskiej poprzez gry wideo oraz procesualnego charakteru duchowości obecnej w tychże grach.

Thomas Owen is well-known as a master of the fantastic 20th century’s short stories. This genre is often influenced by the medieval fiction, in its atmosphere, ‘colour’ and moreover throught precise figures, situations and, sometimes, well specific works, specially arthurian. The case of Owen offers the particular interest of not really a rewriting or even a genuine reception but, supported by a knowledge of some texts, of a literary construction founded on the author’s appreciation of a ‘spirit of the Middle Ages’.

W artykule zaprezentowano antropologiczne implikacje kategorii nocy i ciemności, które są obecne w opowiadaniach fantastycznych. Do literatury fantastycznej zalicza się między innymi gatunki takie jak horror, fantasy oraz science fiction. W każdym z nich występują kategorie nocy i ciemności i są ściśle związane z ich antropologicznym interpretowaniem w kulturze i społeczeństwie. Proces symbolizacji tych kategorii jest obecny w kulturze popularnej. Kulturowe konotacje w literaturze fantastycznej zasadzają się z jednej strony na naturalnym dla ludzi strachu przed nocą i ciemnością, z drugiej zaś na narracji zgodnej z kompetencjami kulturowymi i społecznymi odbiorców.
In her article, Magdalena Ziółkowska discusses the anthropological implications of the categories of night and darkness present in “fantastic” stories. Literature of the fantastic includes genres such as horror, fantasy and science fiction. In each of them there are categories of night and darkness and they are closely related to their anthropological interpretation in culture and society. The process of symbolizing these categories is present in popular culture. Cultural connotations in “fantastic” literature are based, on the one hand, on people’s natural fear of night and darkness, and, on the other, on narrative consistency with the cultural and social competences of the readers.

The paper concerns posthuman and emancipatory contexts of Radek Rak’s novel The Tale of the Serpent’s Heart or Another Word about Jakób Szela. The story re-tells a fabled biography of Jakób Szela, the leader of the Peasant Uprising of 1846. The world created by the novel is subjected to non-human laws and relations, as well as to the feudal system. This fantastical– political juxtaposition exposes and deconstructs various inequalities sanctioning the exploitation of the peasant class. The paper points out three interpretative areas of the book, analyzed in the posthuman context. Firstly, describing the fantastical, non-anthropocentric imagination creating the novel’s world as a space of multiple relations and influences, usually non-existent in the historical works. Secondly, the paper focuses on the de-subjectification / virtualization of the subject. This particular point is discussed with references to other analyses of Rak’s novel, as the paper argues with some of the critical stances. Finally, it considers the genre’s distortion between mythical and historical which creates a space for alternative representations of the Peasant Uprising, escaping the dialectics of the “bad” and “good” legend. The paper’s closest methodological points of reference are texts of Rosi Braidotti (one of the most prominent posthuman philosophy scholars), Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari. Using these tools, as well as author’s original propositions, the paper argues that the posthuman dimension of Rak’s novel expresses its critical effect, and postulates to change conservative relations in human and non-human relations.

The study defines the role of concept art in the process of creating big visual projects. It intends to fill the gap in the academic field and to describe the process of creating concept art from start to finish, considering its theoretical as well as practical outlines. Concept art as an art phenomenon of the 21st century is one of the most respected creative activities in the visual entertainment industry. Creating concept art has become one of the best paid work specialisations within the various processes of artistic and media creation. The meaning of concept art lies in the creation of ‘blueprint’ images and designs, based on the given concept’s purpose. Concept art serves a whole team of creative individuals as a reference allowing for the further development of a creative project. It is mainly used in projects based on key visual features such as unique environments, characters, design and fantastic stories. Therefore, each individual part of the given complexity must be ‘brought to life’ by properly trained artists.

While the short story is from the first book of the Witcher series in terms of story chronology, its translations into foreign languages pose questions on the level of translatability of fantasy stories and their differences in other cultures due to linguistic, historical and literary traditions. In the case of Sapkowski’s short story such challenge to translators is offered by medieval settings and knightly realia typical for the genre and for Polish national history, however lacking in terms of comprehensive parallels in Bulgarian culture. The analysis reveals several groups of disproportions between the original text and its Bulgarian translation.

Artykuł jest pierwszą kompleksową próbą stworzenia teoretycznego zaplecza dla nierozpowszechnionego w polskiej humanistyce terminu „allotopia”, ukutego przez Umberta Eco w eseju Światy science fiction. W miejsce podążania za poststrukturalistycznym wywodem Umberta Eco, przedstawiona zostaje propozycja zdekonstruowania binarnej relacji między realnym (naturalnym, zwyczajnym, znanym, empirycznym i realistycznym) a nierealnym (nienaturalnym, nadzwyczajnym, nieznanym, kontrempirycznym i fantastycznym) światem — jako obowiązującej w dotychczasowych badaniach nad gatunkami fantastycznymi. W konsekwencji, artykuł zachęca do ponowoczesnego odczytywania tych „allotopijnych” tekstów, które rezygnują z wspierania kolonialnego modelu dwuświata na rzecz filozoficznie świadomego światotwórstwa.
The article is the first Polish attempt to provide a theoretical framework for a relatively unknown term ‘allotopia’, coined by Umberto Eco in essay Il mondi della fantascienza. However, instead of following rather poststructuralist Eco’s reasoning, the text proceeds with the deconstruction of the underlain dichotomy between real (natural, ordinary, known, empirical, realistic) and unreal (unnatural, extraordinary, unknown, counterempirical, fantastic) world — which is subsequently exposed as fundamental for heretofore fantasy and SF studies. Consequently, the paper encourages postmodern reading of those ‘allotopian’ texts that resign from supporting a colonial, two-world model in favour of philosophy conscious worldbuilding.

Opis:

The Left Hand of Darkness is one of the most famous novels by an American science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin, not only due to its literary qualities but also because it engages in a certain mental experiment – it introduces an androgynous community. From the perspective of gender philosophy and feminist ideas migrating over the last decades between equality and difference, the idea of incorporating a human being into the concept of androgyne and building on it an alternative vision of society and intimate relations seems worth our attention, especially since the conclusions drawn from this literary experiment are not unequivocal, and even – as some of the female critics of Le Guin demonstrate – are feministically disappointing. As Le Guin tries to illustrate, the fact of gender belonging strongly affects the whole of human existence; thus the abundance of connotations associated with such an experiment seems to be both opening and overwhelming. Despite the fact that Le Guin’s intention is fundamentally feminist, its implementation stumbles on culturally established patterns of defining both sexes, and in particular on language traps associated with privileging male grammatical forms by identifying them with a universal sense. Masculinity once again proves to be the norm of thinking about human beings in general, privileged at a subtle, linguistic level, even when attempting to speak of androgyny. On the example of the project taken up by Le Guin, I reflect on the gender involvement of the androgyne category and the possibility of its unprejudiced expression, as well as the role of science fiction literature in such undertakings
Lewa ręka ciemności jest jedną z najsłynniejszych powieści amerykańskiej autorki science fiction i fantasy Ursuli K. Le Guin, nie tylko ze względu na jej walory literackie, ale również z uwagi na podjęcie w niej pewnego eksperymentu myślowego – przedstawienia społeczności hermafrodytów. Z perspektywy filozofii płci i feministycznych idei, migrujących na przestrzeni ostatnich dziesięcioleci pomiędzy równością a różnicą, pomysł wcielenia istoty ludzkiej w koncept androgyne i zbudowania na tej podstawie alternatywnej wizji społeczeństwa oraz intymnych relacji, wydaje się warty uwagi. Zwłaszcza, że wnioski płynące z tego literackiego eksperymentu nie są jednoznaczne, a nawet – jak pokazują niektóre krytyczki pisarstwa le Guin – feministycznie rozczarowujące.Jak stara się to zobrazować le Guin, przynależność do płci silnie wpływa na całość ludzkiej egzystencji, zatem bezmiar konotacji związanych z takim eksperymentem wydaje się zarówno otwierający, jak i przytłaczający. Pomimo więc, że zamierzenie le Guin jest z gruntu feministyczne, to jego implementacja potyka się o utrwalone kulturowo wzorce definiowania obu płci, a w szczególności o pułapki językowe związane z uprzywilejowaniem męskich form gramatycznych poprzez ich utożsamienie z sensem uniwersalnym. Męskość ponownie okazuje się normą myślenia o człowieku tout court, uprzywilejowaną na subtelnym, językowym poziomie, nawet przy próbie wypowiedzenia androgyniczności. Na przykładzie podjętego przez le Guin projektu zastanawiam się więc nad genderowym uwikłaniem kategorii androgyne i możliwością jej nieuprzedzonego wypowiedzenia, a także nad rolą literatury science fiction w tego typu przedsięwzięciach.

The article Extra-educational Bestiary? Transformation of Animal Paradise Motif in Polish Young Adult Fantastic Literature is an attempt to define a new argument for a possibility of animal immortality on the basis of fantasy literature for children and young adults. For this purpose, Ewelina Rąbkowska analyzes three examples of the theme of animal paradise in Polish animal fantasy novels for children and young adults. The main hypothesis of the article is that intuition of fantasy literature tells—in the same way as (defined in some previous papers) “poetical intuition”—stories about significant relationships between humans and non-humans, which last longer than single life. The author argues that contemporary fantasies for young adults are examples of crossing the borders of a traditional anthropocentric point of view. They show a new, post-humanist discourse about animals, change the language, narrative strategies and—what is most important—traditional didactic purposes of the text.

The article discusses the topic of truth and lie in the narration of, and the world depicted in Antony Pogorelsky’s (a penname of Alexey Alexeyevich Perovsky) set of short stories entitled The Double, or My Evenings in Little Russia, and in particular in the set’s framework structure. The author analyses the interac-tion between two protagonists and discourse participants: Antony, an alter ego of the real writer, and The Double, an alter ego of the fictitious writer. The phenome-non of the double, that fascinated the romanticists, together with its symbolism and attributes (mirror, twins, two, split personality) is the author’s starting point for literary consideration of the issue of fiction and literary mystification. The au-thor also uses the perspective of the demonological discourse to study the bounda-ry between the real and the fantastic, reason and fantasy, awareness and supersti-tion, hard facts and intuition.

The first part of the so-called medieval trilogy by Ana María Matute, The Watchtower (1971), approaches the mythical world of the Middle Ages with a manifestly modern sensibility, preoccupied by lack of communication, isolation, violence and the conflictive nature of human relations. The use of inherent properties distinguishing the medieval culture (castles, warriors, weapons, etc.) allows, on the one hand, to accentuate the brutality of the world and, on the other hand, to reach an unreal dimension through the pre-rational imagination (witches, spells, animals in bestiaries, etc.), generating the universal meaning of the story. Focusing the narrative on a teenage character, the writer delves into one of the essential themes of her creation: the discovery of ferocity in human relations. Thus, in this Bildungsroman inscribed in the aesthetics of medievalizing fantasy (with Gothic elements that intensify the terrifying experience), moral problems are discussed, with a special attention to the consequences of affective deficiencies, violence, war, etc.

The article is an attempt to reconstruct the influence of texts that appeared in the magazine “Fantastyka” (later “Nowa Fantastyka”) in the 1980s and 1990s on the introduction of the concept of “fantasy” to Polish literary culture. The analysis included not only theoretical and literary publications (sometimes translations from other languages), but also popular science and essay writings, editorials and readers’ letters. All of them seem to prove that the “birth” of “fantasy” in Poland was a spontaneous and multidimensional process—an example of authentic literary life, engaging not only critics and authors, but also the literary audience in the meta-literary discourse.

Powieść Novendialia (2008) ukraińskiej autorki Maryny Sokolian (ur. 1979) z elementami detektywistycznymi i horroru miejskiego opowiada o bitwach pomiędzy porywaczami energii życiowej a jej obrońcami ze służby Nocnego Magistratu. W tekście rozważane są religijne i psychologiczne aspekty rozmaitych aluzji oraz implikacje wyobrażonego autorskiego systemu mitycznomagicznego z punktu widzenia religii, filozofii, psychologii (zwłaszcza psychoanalizy). Cena życia i śmierci dowodzi, że pisarka wpisuje się w typ powieści o samorealizacji, poświęceniu i namiętnościach.
The novel entitled Novendialia (2008) by a Ukrainian authoress Maryna Sokolian (1979) with elements of a detective story and urban horror tells about fights between life energy kidnappers and its defenders employed by the Night Town Hall. In the text religious and psychologic aspects of various allusions are considered as well as authoress’ implications of fictitious mythicalmagical system from the point of view of religion, philosophy, psychology (especially psychoanalysis). The price of life and death proves that the writer fits in the type of a novel on selffulfilment, sacrifice and passions.

Artykuł jest poświęcony kształtowi genologicznemu uprawianej przez Teodora Parnickiego powieści historyczno-fantastycznej, rozpatrywanemu na przykładzie dylogii, którą tworzą dzieła Muza dalekich podróży i Staliśmy jak dwa sny. Szczególnie interesuje mnie obecna w powieściach fantastyka, która wyraźnie reprezentuje dwa typy. Pierwszy z nich nazwałem „fantastyką historyczną”, drugi sam pisarz określił jako „fantastykę czystą”. Ich współwystępowanie odróżnia uprawianą przez Parnickiego powieść od form pokrewnych (powieści historycznej, fantastycznej i historii alternatywnej), a zarazem wyposaża dzieła prozaika w znane z literatury romantycznej cechy (autotematyzm, ironię romantyczną) oraz decyduje o przeważającej nad historycznością – literackości dzieła.
This article is about the genological aspects of the historical fantasy novels by Teodor Parnicki as seen in his dilogy consisting of Muza dalekich podróży and Staliśmy jak dwa sny. I focus mainly on fantasy elements visible in the novels, which are clearly divided into two separated tendencies. I called the first one “historical fantasy”, and the author himself called the second one “pure fantasy”. Their coexistence is what distinguishes Parnicki’s type of novel from similar forms (historical novels, fantasy novels, and alternate history). At the same time, this combination gives the writer’s creations traits characteristic of the romantic period (mise en abyme, romantic irony) and determines the literary character of the text, which is stronger than the historical one.

The aim of this paper is to show how contemporary children’s fantasy fiction offers alternative methods to children and teenagers for confronting real-life issues, such as self-discovery, sense of belonging and the process of individuation, through the analysis of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. In his contemporary children’s fantasy book, Gaiman empowers his protagonist to explore her sense of self, overcome her insecurities and fears in a fantastic mirror-like home. This paper argues that fantasy is an effective device for explaining the complexities and dilemmas of the self and examining a child’s quest for self-discovery in the process of maturation and individuation.

The aim of this paper is to examine Charles de Lint’s novel Widdershins(2006), whose main theme is an interspecies war for the American land. The paper demonstrates how, by exploring the themes of Indigenous suffering, belief in species interconnectedness, reverence for the natural world, and approach to trauma, the novel participates in the deconstruction of colonial structures present in the concept of the Anthropocene. The paper also engages de Lint’s novel in a dialogue with the studies on the Anthropocene to prove that, by providing its readers with alternative modes of thinking, fantasy fiction can contribute to the cognitive change required to save our planet from human-wrought destruction.

Opis:

The research material in this work is the dilogy of Sergey Lukyanenko Rough Draft (Черновик, 2005) and Final Draft (Чистовик, 2007). In the first part (Rough Draft) the author focuses on the image of modern Russia, while in the second part (Final Draft) he expands his observations into Poland and its people. The image presented by the author notably duplicates ethnic and cultural stereotypes about Poland and Poles, fixed in the common consciousness of Russians. As a result, despite the objectivity declared by the author, it is difficult to consider the discussed novels a breakthrough in the context of the process of overcoming mutual prejudices between the neighboring nations on the basis of the literature.

Opis:

The figure of the femme fatale is understood as inviting her own murder. Supposedly, the cause of the violence done by a man in thrall to her, she is in fact the primary victim of this violence. In the French confessional narrative, the woman is always somehow at fault for the protagonist’s failure, whether by loving him too little or too much; she dies and he lives to tell the tale, recounting it to another man who listens and absolves. Thus, the heroine both dies again and is revived, to be contained — in both senses — in the text. Fictions from three centuries — Prévost’s Manon Lescaut (1753), Mérimée’s Carmen (1845), and Gide’s L’Immoraliste (1902) — will be compared for their representation of literary femicide. Almost a century later, the changed ending of Fatal Attraction (directed by Lyne in 1987) demonstrates the public’s clamor for the killing of a supposedly dangerous woman. A final section compares the significance of Princess Diana with these fictional instances of femicide: How did our love for her bring on her violent death?

Fantasy jest obecnie jednym z najpopularniejszych gatunków literackich. W artykule przeanalizowano wykluczenia występujące wokół tego nurtu. Refleksja ta dotyczy płaszczyzny akademickiej (pomijanie fantasy w naukowym dyskursie), autorskiej (wykluczanie autorów przez fandom i członków fandomu przez autorów) oraz fandomowej (wzajemne wykluczanie członków fandomu). Wnioskiem płynącym z artykułu jest, że w wypadku nurtu fantasy nie można mówić o konkretnym wykluczeniu, ale o różnych jego rodzajach, zależnych od danej płaszczyzny.
Fantasy is one of the most popular literary genres today. The article analyzes the subject of exclusions that take place around this trend. This reflection concerns mainly the academic (omitting fantasy in the scientific discourse), authoring (excluding authors by the fandom and fandom members by authors) and fandom (mutual exclusion of fandom members) plane. The conclusion of the article is that in the case of the fantasy trend, you cannot talk about a specific exclusion, but about different types, depending on a given plane.

Opis:

This paper constitutes a summary of studies in the field of axiological linguistics. Its main aim is to present a relationship between the moral judgement and the aesthetic evaluation of characters in the Polish fantasy literature and to elaborate on some of their their characteristics. The study shows that most of the analysed characters were created on the basis of an aesthetic and ethical parallelism, which means that the righteousbeautiful or the evil-hideous types are realized. Yet the parallelism is by no means overt in the literature. A tremendous role in modification of the character’s profile is played by such attributes as the character’s eyes and voice. Descriptions of the character’s body frame and scars, recurring features in the character’s profile, and means of indirect valuation (mostly colour) are axiologically analysed. Also, the most pronounced trends in the use of primarily evaluative means are pointed out.

Opis:

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and his Russian colleague Sergey Lukyanenko are considered to be two best-known living science-fiction and fantasy authors from their countries at the turn of the century. What is more, their popularity is not only connected with their homeland, but also spreads to other countries. As we can observe, Lukyanenko is the most important living Russian modern SF&F author in Poland, whereas Sapkowski is one of the best-known Polish contemporary writers in Russia (not only SF&F, but in general - right after Lem and Chmielewska). It is interesting to take a close look at their popularity and reveal how their works connect and influence many different branches of culture in Poland and Russia. It is impossible to take into consideration all of their works, so we concentrate on Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga and Lukyanenko’s four urban fantasy novels about The Night Watch and The Day Watch. On this basis we present their influence on such cultural areas as film, comic books and computer games. We also describe the reception of this influence and its results in Poland and Russia.

Opis:

Author of this article describes characters and themes of Dragonlance saga, one of Dungeons & Dragons worlds, written by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. He notes that Heroes of the Lance are „transistional” - although they are adult in physical sense, they also have problems of teenagers and are close to young readers in regard that they must grown up, too. He also notes that the whole Dragonlance saga is transitional – placed between heroic fantasy of Tolkien and dark fantasy of Sapkowski, between fairytale-like world of Lewis and „realistic” world of Martin. He concludes that although Dragonlance main function is to entertain the reader, it can show some ethical behaviour, too.

Utopia, or There and Back Again. On Worldbuilding Strategies in Utopian and Dystopian NarrativesThe paper aims to analyse worldbuilding strategies in a variety of eutopian (predominantly in literature) and dystopian narratives (in literature, movies and video games), in relation to the world-centred analyse that disseminates in contemporary narrative studies. Consequently, the study derives two possible worldbuilding models from a representative number of utopian texts, that is (1) a typical for early modern utopias and modern imaginary voyages “portal-quest” model (world W1 → gate / journey → world W2) and (2) an emblematic for the most postmodern dystopias model juxtaposing the centre and the peripheries, that deconstructs the first one in postcolonial perspective. Therefore, it becomes possible to compare worldbuilding foundations in so different a narrative like precursory 16th century Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) and 21st century video game Bioshock: Infinite by Irrational Games – which subsequently encourages utopian studies to notice the most contemporary narrative achievements within the genre.

The aim of the following paper is to examine the conflict between the cult of the Mother Goddess and Christianity, which affects King Arthur’s reign in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s original retelling of Arthurian legends – The Mists of Avalon (1983). The religious conflict presented in the novel is inextricably linked with representations of femininity and the figures of Morgaine (Morgan le Fay) and Queen Gwenhwyfar, who are dedicated, respectively, to Avalon and the Church. By investigating both women’s beliefs, actions, and relationship with Arthur, this paper will demonstrate how in Bradley’s retelling the transition from the worship of the Goddess to Christianity conditions King Arthur’s reign and ultimately contributes to his downfall.

Zwierciadlana zagadka (Mirror’s riddle) is the only science-fiction novel by Jadwiga Łuszczewska who is known primarily as an author of historical novels and improvisator. The present story uses the legend of the basilisk and the efforts to bring it back to life. Analysing Zwierciadlana zagadka through the prism of the urban legend, a phenomenon described in the literature and folklore research in the second half of the twentieth century, allows to read it as a record of the late nineteenth century fear of modern discoveries related to the sphere of human memory − capturing images in photography and on video tape.

The article presents social functions of various types of fantasy with special emphasis on science fiction on the example of Jacek Dukaj's texts. In her deliberations the author first of all focuses on the pragmatic dimension of the truth of the very fantasy literature and the truth whose carrier the text is. The first of the mentioned aspects is realized when the text gives the recipient a feeling of being rooted in the cultural tradition, stabilizes his sense of identity, and is a reply to his need of safety and esthetic pleasure. The latter one, in turn, is revealed on the level of literary imaging when the fictitious worlds created by the author illustrate the contemporary man's problems, visualize his latent fears, and at the same time show how they can be coped with.

Tzvetan Todorov typified the literary fantastic as an autonomous gender in 1970, separating it from marvelous texts and other bordering modes that contained unreal or supernatural elements. In the Latin-American Hispanic studies his model and several other views about fantastic literature encouraged an advancing body of important theorizing, more or less critical with his definition of the gender, finding or not correlations with French or Anglo-Saxon alternative approaches to Todorov’s taxonomist view. In Spain a consistent incorporation to the debate occurred much later thanks to Catalan researcher David Roas. In the present article it is presented a brief state of the investigation about the literary fantastic through the last 20 years in Hispanic studies, when the first reactions to structuralist visions of the subject were enriched by sociocritical, historic, psychologist and philological contributions. two particular, solid but conflicting approaches are analyzed as the opposed poles of a quite wide spectrum of different understandings and ways of doing literary fantastic: on one hand, Mexican scholar Ana María Morales philologist and intratextual-based view, and, on the other hand, Roas psychologist and actual-reader-response-based position. This accurately examined presentation shows the complex variety and the enormous interest of Hispanic studies theorizing about fantasy worlds.

Dans "Le Cocu magnifique" de Crommelynck, la nuit n’est pas seulement une donnée extérieure comme pour nombre de pièces dont les actions les plus importantes ont pour cadre un décor nocturne. Paradoxalement, cette œuvre qui se déroule pour l’essentiel dans des décors diurnes accorde à la nuit une importance inattendue. Il faut donc s’interroger sur les enjeux dramatiques et esthétiques de cette omniprésence. La fête carnavalesque nocturne de la Saint Géraud et l’étrange sérénade donnée par Bruno déguisé à son épouse Stella suscitent à la fois le rire et l’inquiétude. Mais surtout la nuit investit le discours des personnages et inspire leurs actes. En outre, sommeil, rêves, désir, fantasmes, tout se rapporte à la nuit. De surcroît, sommeil et rêves sont l’objet d’interprétations divergentes par les personnages. La question du manque et du désir, nourrissant leurs fantasmes, est au cœur des relations entre les personnages. Quant à Bruno, il nourrit sa jalousie par son exaltation du corps de Stella, par la poésie et par l’imaginaire dans lequel il se complaît au point de sombrer dans la folie : la nuit assombrit le rapport amoureux au point de faire passer les deux protagonistes du paradis à l’enfer dans un cauchemar bouffon.
In Crommelynck's Le Cocu magnifique, the night is not merely an external detail as for many pieces whose most important actions are set in a nocturnal setting. Paradoxically, this work, which takes place mainly in daytime settings, gives the night an unexpected importance. We must therefore question the dramatic and aesthetic stakes of this omnipresence. The carnival festival of Saint-Géraud and the strange serenade given by Bruno in disguise to his wife Stella arouse both laughter and concern. But above all, the night invests the speech of the characters and inspires their actions. In addition, sleep, dreams, desire, fantasies, everything relates to the night. In addition, sleep and dreams are the subject of divergent interpretations by the characters. The question of absence and desire, feeding their fantasies, is at the heart of the relationships between the characters. As for Bruno, he feeds his jealousy by his exaltation of Stella's body, by poetry and by the imagination in which he delights to the point of sinking into madness: the night darkens the love relationship to the point of making the two protagonists pass from heaven to hell into a buffoon nightmare.

Opis:

Norbert Elias never presented his views regarding collective memory in a systematic manner. However, his approach may be reconstructed on the basis of such works as The Civilizing Process, Time: An Essay and The Symbol Theory. The most important tenet of Elias is that human memory can only be explained by the symbol theory. Human ability to use socially created symbols in communication is applied in activities in which symbols are used (speaking, thinking, knowing and remembering), which makes memory a part of general process of symbolic communication. Memory research needs to account for the interactive and communicational origins of both individual and collective remembering. One of the crucial issues related to remembering is collective forgetting. According to Elias it operates by three main mechanisms: (1) elimination and creation of fantastic notions (fantasy being a substitute and subsidiary for experience), (2) modification of social canons of reference as a result of power struggle in social figurations, and (3) delegitimization of alternative imageries by means of marginalization or elimination of groups acting as their social vehicles. I discuss these mechanisms and the dynamics of memory they entail in the broader conceptual framework of the theory of civilizing processes referring to Central and Eastern European examples in order to demonstrate the productivity of Elias’s interdisciplinary and multidimensional analysis in social memory studies focusing this region.

“GENRE MEMORY” AND ITS METAMORPHOSIS IN A LITERARY TALE BY A.A. MILNEThe nucleus of Milne’s literary tale dilogy (Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at the Pooh Corner) is an archaic folklore-mythological spatio-temporal structure and its specific subject realization that have proved capable of development, metamorphosis, synthesis with other deep structures and have led to the formation of literary genres of a neo-mythological character – literary tale, story and fantasy.In Milne’s tales there is no traditional struggle between Good and Evil, there are practically no “miraculous” objects and magical powers. The action is not based on the confrontation between the two sides, representing different moral principles (as in a traditional fairy tale), but involves the transition of the hero, Christopher Robin, from the world of childhood to the adult world, acquiring a higher social status, the development of abilities and skills of various characters to solve different life problems, first at the level of choice of options from the accumulated empirical experience, and then at the level of abstraction from real specifics to the skills of logical analysis and mastering written speech and the basics of mathematics. This results in the acquisition of a new level of knowledge and the development of a new way of understanding of the world (the creation of the cosmos from chaos).

Artykuł przedstawia zjawisko popularności motywów słowiańskich w najnowszej polskiej kulturze popularnej. Jego celem jest pokazanie zmian w podejściu do Słowiańszczyzny po 1989 roku. Punktem wyjścia jest koncepcja krytyki fantazmatycznej Marii Janion i refleksja nad zmianą współcześnie podejścia do tradycji romantycznej, by stworzyć nowe narracje o polskiej tożsamości, w których ważna może być Słowiańszczyzna pojęta jako fantazmat. Dlatego obok form pisarstwa historycznego coraz większą rolę odgrywają różne rodzaje twórczości fantastycznej. Kluczowe są dwa stanowiska: sceptyczne wobec możliwości stworzenia słowiańskiej fantastyki (Andrzeja Sapkowskiego) oraz kreatywne, zafascynowane słowiańskim dziedzictwem (Marii Janion). Artykuł kończy propozycja interpretacji mody na Słowiańszczyznę w odniesieniu do badań z kręgu teorii widmologii.
Article presents the phenomenon of the popularity of Slavic motifs in the latest Polish popular culture. Its aim is to show the changes in the approach to Slavism after 1989. The starting point is the concept of phantasmatic criticism by Maria Janion and a reflection on the contemporary change in the approach to the Romantic tradition in order to create new narratives about Polish identity, in which Slavism is understood as a phantasm which may be important. Therefore, in addition to the forms of historical writing, various types of fantasy work play an increasingly important role. Two positions are crucial: skeptical about the possibility of creating Slavic fantasy (Andrzej Sapkowski) and creative, inspired by Slavic heritage (Maria Janion). The article ends with a proposal to interpret the fashion for the Slavs in relation to research in the field of spectral theory.

Opis:

Many postcolonial readings of fantasy fiction focus on exploring complicated relationships between different fantastic races that inhabit a certain secondary world. However, such studies often overlook interactions of these races with the supernatural animals and beasts that live alongside them. Fantasy narratives like Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Saga and George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire depict fantastic settings where the relationship between the inhabitants of the world and the supernatural creatures is just as important as the interracial relations because it is based on similar principles of interaction between the Familiar and the Other and can be used to characterize them. Therefore, this article will address the following issues: how the supernatural creatures are perceived in their respective secondary worlds; what attitude prevails in this perception; and why it prevails above other reactions.

The article „This Demonic Bosch”. In Four-Hundredth Anniversary of Painter’s Death by Ksenia Olkusz and Wiesław Olkusz concerns the reception of Hieronymus Bosch in contemporary popular literature. Bosch inspirations are traced in Michael Connelly’s or Jeffrey Lindsay’s crime fiction, as well as in fantasy genre, represented here by Polish writer Jarosław Grzędowicz. Many writers exhibit interests in Bosch’s biography which, in turn, becomes interwoven in their storytelling. These tendencies come not only from the long-observed liaisons between literature and visual arts, but are also a consequence of the increasing popularity of mysterious works of art following Dan Brown’s bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code. In at least a decade after the premiere of Brown’s work, many subsequent books has already proved to be clearly inspired by his concept. This type of novel requires to recall paintings we do not know much about or biographies of painters that are still incomplete or lack precise account of their lives. Accordingly, the oeuvre of Hieronymus Bosch—an enigmatic figure and author of disturbing artworks alike—is presented as a prodigious source of story ideas.

Opis:

The author wonders how it is possible that such a catastrophic future was described in 1881 when the era of progress peaked. For this purpose, he defines Manuscript from the coming century as a dystopian fantasy (analogous to Fredric Jameson’s “desire called utopia”) and analyses the limits of representation as they emerge in a story of the future written by a nineteenth-century author. Firstly, he shows the cultural image of Stefan Buszczyński which presented him as a romantic epigone. Contrary to the stereotypes, he depicts the writer as a researcher who knows the positivism philosophy and the modern statistics. Then, the author demonstrates the limitations of the dystopian form, which contains two irreconcilable concepts of history: voluntarismand determinism. These contradictions are not the only ones. Also the fantasy materialis made of four contradictory ideologies, namely, Thomism, Rousseauism, criticism of positivism and capitalism. Inconclusion, Buszczyński’s thought is shown as a very modern one and the author of Decline of Europe could be presented as the founder of the 20th century concepts, whose roots lie obviously in the middle of the 19th century.

The paper seeks to explore the concept of the secondary world as developed in Susanna Clarke’s 2020 fantasy novel Piranesi. The analysis is conducted in the context of the evolution of the literary motif of fairy abduction between the classic medieval texts and its current incarnations in modern speculative fiction. The argument relates the unique secondary world model found in Clarke’s novel to the extensive intertextual relationship Piranesi has with the tradition of portal fantasy narratives, and discusses it in the context of the progressive cognitive internalisation of the perception of the fantastic which has taken place between the traditional medieval paradigm and contemporary fantasy fiction.

Opis:

The starting point for the discussion is the statement that fantasy is born in the language. Among the linguistic measures that create the ‘crack’ in reality indefinite pronouns can be found. They make it possible to form the reference ambiguity/inaccuracy. Our aim is to describe linguistic mechanisms which conceal the perpetrator of action. This is why reflection on the structure indefinite pronoun + V and its Polish equivalents in the corpus of fantasy texts is offered. The purpose of the analysis is not to systematically describe the use of this structure. It is crucial to present the most important contexts in which the structure is present. The choice of corpus is a particularly important matter with regard to the obtained results. We would like to show that the structure indefinite pronoun on + V is one of the invariants of fantasy literature.

Opis:

The author of the article carries out an analysis of texts by two writers who present the Shoah from different perspectives. At the onset he points out two layers of looking at theHolocaust in fantasy writing. The first one results from the said theme filtering through into the genre directly, the second is an intermediary one, namely, through the popular after the Second World War post-apocalyptic narratives where the Shoah is thematised as, for instance, the annihilation of the human race resulting from nuclear conflict or the spread of a deadly virus. The article analyses both mentioned layers using particular examples. Polaroidy z Zagłady [The Shoah/Annihilation Polaroids] by Paweł Paliński is a tale of an individual Shoah. What constitutes the analytical framework here are the titular pictures, which translate into a genre, nowadays rarely practised, called the literary picture. In the course of reading one recognises the triangle of attitudes: victim – witness – torturer. Even if the said triangle has been criticized by historians, it nonetheless decisively appears in the text owing to its layout. Requiem dla lalek [Requiem for Dolls] and Holocaust F written by Cezary Zbierzchowski are, respectively, a short-story collection and a novel, set in the fictitious world of Ramm. It is known from the very beginning that the world is doomed to be annihilated, the harbinger of which is God’s departure. In the short stories other signs of extinction are, among other things, euthanasia, the problem of immigration etc. The plains of annihilation recognized in the course of interpretation: metaphysical, social, and personal, compose a part of philosophical reflection on consequences of catastrophes being one of the spheres of the analysis undertaken. What also arrests our attention, and thereby is reflected upon, is the highly intertextual background of Zbierzchowski’s oeuvre. A prominent place is given to the analysis of the novel’s final chapter entitled Heart of Darkness, both referring to the famous novella written by Joseph Conrad and more than sufficiently justified by the text composition itself. The article’s conclusions both position the texts in relation to other works of Polish fantasy genre and indicate their role as examples of various absorption by popular culture (here fantasy) of the Shoah-related issues.

Opis:

The article discusses the work of J. R. R. Tolkien in the context of the concept of hope as it is defined in the Thomist philosophical system. The thrust of the argument is that the distinction between the two meanings of the word: hope defined as an appetitive passion of the soul and hope understood as one of the theological virtues provides a viable conceptual key to a discussion of the way in which the idea of hope functions in J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic works of fantasy fiction. The analysis seeks to trace the evolution of this basic dichotomy throughout The Lord of the Rings and the most pertinent sections of the legendarium presenting how the notion of hope functions for the civilization of the Elves and of Men, and also how the interaction between the passion and the virtue of hope impacts upon the construction and function of some of the key the individual characters of Tolkien’s fiction.
Artykuł zawiera omówienie twórczości J. R. R. Tolkiena w kontekście pojęcia nadziei w ujęciu zdefiniowanym przez św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Celem argumentu jest prześledzenie jak dwa rodzaje nadziei wyróżnione w głównym dziele św. Tomasza – Summa Theologica: nadzieja pojmowana jako uczucie oraz nadzieja postrzegana jako cnota teologiczna odzwierciedlone jest w twórczości J. R. R. Tolkiena, pozostającej pod determinującym wpływem myśli i teologii katolickiej. Analiza obejmuje główne dzieła Tolkiena, które składają się na wizję świata wtórnego rozwiniętą w eposie Władca Pierścieni oraz w towarzyszącym mu legendarium.

Począwszy od opublikowania w 1946 roku przez Melanie Klein klasycznego już dziś opisu identyfikacji projekcyjnej, zjawisko to w coraz większym stopniu zajmowało uwagę psychoanalityków, stając się z czasem jednym z centralnych punktów teorii i praktyki psychoanalitycznej. Jak zauważa Roth (2008, s. 250), ze wszystkich odkryć Klein to właśnie zyskało najbardziej powszechną aprobatę. Celem tego artykułu jest próba scharakteryzowania identyfikacji projekcyjnej w świetle ewolucji, jakiej podlegał ten koncept – od lokowania go wyłącznie w wymiarze imaginacyjności po rozpoznanie znaczenia jego obecności w rzeczywistości społecznej. Fenomen identyfikacji projekcyjnej rozpatrywany jest w niniejszym artykule z perspektywy koncepcji Klein – twórczyni tego konstruktu – oraz z punktu widzenia dwóch kluczowych dla rozwoju tego pojęcia koncepcji, autorstwa W. R. Biona i T. H. Ogdena. Prezentacja tych perspektyw ma służyć ukazaniu złożoności tego zjawiska i bogactwa obszarów jego zastosowania oraz ewolucji pojmowania tego mechanizmu – od koncentracji na tym, co intrapsychiczne, po stan, kiedy w równej mierze zwraca się uwagę również na to, co interpersonalne.
The aim of this article is to present the mechanism of projective identification, one of the crucial constructs of both classical and contemporary psychoanalysis. The phenomenon of projective identification is discussed from the point of view of M. Klein – the creator of this construct – and from the perspectives of W. R. Bion and T. H. Ogden, the authors of two fundamental theories of this mechanism. The presentation of these points of view serves to show the complexity of this phenomenon and the variety of areas for its application. The aim of the paper is to show the evolution of how this mechanism was understood, from the focus on what is intrapsychic and imaginative, to the recognition of the importance of its activity in the area of interpersonal reality.

The article on the example of the novel by the Polish fantasy author Maja Lidia Kossakowska, Ruda sfora, shows how the sacrum is manifested in the literary space in this genre, which values and qualities are sanctified and opposed to what. In order to build a typical for the genre’s plot – the struggle between the forces of good and evil – Kossakowska used shamanic beliefs of the Yakuts. Presenting dangers of doctrinal rationalism, she showed what the desire to extinguish the faith, may lead to, and indicate element which brings hope in the unequal fight against totalitarianism – the memory.
