Opis:
This article considers how popular/spreadable misogyny enters into Doctor Who fans’ discourse communities via fan-cultural appropriation, mixing external political and internal fan discourses. This can oppose fannish communal norms such as “convivial evaluation” and “ante-fandom”. The theoretical perspective taken in the article combines work on toxic fandom with anti-fandom to thus understand fan toxicity as “multiphrenic”, i.e. drawing on multiple discourses and self-investments, including responding to its own anti-fans. The article goes on to examine YouTube voiceover-commentary videos from one communally-prominent Whotuber representing Not My Doctor anti-fandom, showing how they use devices such as the acousmetre and “stripped down” subjectivity to open a projective space for toxic fandom and enact a flat affect characterising what is termed “performative rationality”. Crucially, leftwing narratives of toxicity and hate are completely inverted to the extent that Doctor Who and the BBC are presumed, without evidence, to “hate” straight white male conservative fandom.

Though the area of fan studies has been a prolific field of research for almost three decades, it is still marginal in Poland. The purpose of this paper is not to present types of fan activity, but to discuss the way they are researched and how this research was influenced by ethnography, Pierre Bourdieu’s Critical Theory and cultural studies (especially reception studies). The classic works of fan studies have established a still dominant paradigm of the political and subversive character of fan activity, which is followed by a notion of fandom as a heterotopia. In order to continue the research, it has been necessary for academics to establish a position of involvement instead of distance and to create ethical guidelines preventing fans from being colonized as the Other. However, that may cause petrification of fan studies.

This paper examines the history and the shape of contemporary fanfiction repositories. The notion of an archive – one that is often used to describe such spaces, and appears in their names – is contrasted with Griselda Pollock’s proposal of a virtual feminist museum. Though for decades there have been attempts at preserving fan fiction (mostly created by women, non-canonical and transgressive), the stories had been subjected to selection and censorship. With the disappearance of such practices, the repositories start to embody Pollock’s notion. At the same time, however, as the lack of censorship causes economic problems, the virtuality of such ‘museums’ no longer denotes their digital nature but their evanescence.

Shipowanie jako jedna z najpopularniejszych praktyk fanowskich jest silnie nacechowana afektywnie i przypisywane są jej różne znaczenia. Zindywidualizowane interpretowanie przez fanów tekstu źródłowego i odmienne shipy, jakie na nich bazują, rodzą konflikty i rozłamy wewnątrz fandomów. Na gruncie tego wyłoniło się zjawisko anty-shipowania oraz wojen shiperskich. Niniejszy artykuł, skupiający się na fandomie medialnym, ma na celu prześledzenie tej problematyki poprzez przedstawienie dyskusji i kłótni fandomowych, które motywowane są emocjami dotyczącymi shipów: od wojen shiperskich prowadzonych przez shiperów konkurujących ze sobą pairingów po anty-shiperów kierowanych pobudkami moralnymi w postaci przybliżenia fandomowej problematyki puritywank oraz anty-shiperów pairingów celebrytów. Wykorzystując badania z zakresu fan studies oraz media studies, autorki starają się odnaleźć motywację i pobudki dla, niekiedy skrajnych, zachowań anty-shiperów. Mają na celu ukazać niejednolitość fandomu medialnego oraz to, jakim ważnym elementem w byciu fanem jest własna interpretacja tekstu źródłowego oraz ulubiony ship.
Shipping, as one of the most popular fan practices, is highly affective, and there are different meanings ascribed to it. Different interpretations of the source text made by fans and the different ships that are fashioned based on them create conflicts and divisions within the fandom. On the basis of this, the phenomenon of anti-shipping and shipwars has emerged. This article, focusing on media fandoms, aims to showcase this issue by presenting fandom discussions and arguments motivated by emotions around ships: from ship wars waged by shippers competing with each other, to anti-shippers driven by moral motives in the form of introducing the fandom purity wank issue and anti-shippers of celebrity pairings. By researching the field of fan studies and media studies, the authors aim to find the motivation and reasons for the sometimes extreme behavior of anti-shippers. The gool is to show the diversity of media fandoms and the importance of fans’ own interpretations of the source text and their ship of choice for the fans themselves.

W niniejszym artykule proponuję spojrzenie na globalny fandom jako społeczność, w którą – wbrew wstępnym rozpoznaniom badaczy –wpisana jest hierarchia prestiżu społecznego, zależnego od kilku czynników. Na przykładzie fandomu furry (fanów antropomorficznych przedstawień zwierząt), zajmujących w tej hierarchii niską pozycję, opisuję te czynniki, skupiając się przede wszystkim na normatywności ekspresji, którą fandomy zapożyczają od patriarchalnej kultury głównego nurtu.
The following article attempts to demonstrate how fandoms can be regarded as communities which – despite the initial diagnosis and findings of scholars – are based on prestige social hierarchies dependent on several factors. By analyzing the case of the furry fandom (a subculture revolving around anthropomorphic animal characters), which appears to occupy a lowly position in the aforementioned hierarchy, the author discusses the selected factors, with particular emphasis on the normativity of expression in the context of mainstream patriarchal culture permeating most fandoms.

  Fani reprezentują zmianę w konsumowaniu mediów, a ich wzory zachowania są coraz częściej widoczne poza ich grupami, w innych środowiskach. Wraz z obserwowanym zwrotem ku społeczeństwu sieciowemu, którego emanacją są fandomy, zmienia się także pole konfliktu społecznego, funkcjonując w obrębie kultury. Władza kulturowa nad wytworami medialnymi należy już nie tylko do twórców, a wpływ mają na nią także użytkownicy, którzy przestają biernie konsumować produkty, twórczo je interpretując i angażując się w ich rozwój. Celem artykułu było ukazanie tego procesu na przykładzie przeprowadzonej analizy zawartości treści internetowych tworzonych wewnątrz środowiska fandomu serialu Gra o tron, w tym spekulacji, które wielbiciele marki toczyli w kontekście rozwoju fabularnego.
Fans represent a shift in media consumption, and their patterns of behaviour are increasingly visible outside their communities, in other groups. With the observed shift towards a network society, of which fandoms are an emanation, the field of social conflict begins to operate within culture. Cultural power over media products no longer belongs only to the creators, but is also influenced by the users, who cease to passively consume products, creatively interpreting tchem and engaging in their development. The aim of the article was to show this process on the example of content analysis of internet entries created within the environment of the Game of Thrones fandom, including speculations which the fans of the brand carried out in the context of the plot development.

The paper discusses the letter exchange between Maria von Herbert and Immanuel Kant as an early example of fan mail. While the past research on Herbert described her as a sharp but underappreciated philosopher, in this paper she is treated primarily as a fangirl. The article discusses her correspondence with Kant (and Kant’s correspondence about her exchanged with others), her use of religious language as best means of conveying her fascination with an inaccessible celebrity, the parasocial interaction of these two, and the manner in which a hysterical discourse has been imposed on the young woman, not unlike the fate of contemporary fangirls.

Nieakceptowalne społecznie zachowanie Choi Jin Ri (piosenkarki występującej pod pseudonimem Sulli) doprowadziło do wybuchu paniki moralnej wśród netizenów Korei Południowej. Artystka zyskała zaciekłych anty-fanów, łamiąc niepisany etos obowiązujący w koreańskim przemyśle kulturowym, regulujący zachowanie idoli oraz relacje pomiędzy idolami a fanami. Konserwatywne społeczeństwo nie mogło zaakceptować głoszonych przez Choi Jin Ri feministycznych postulatów, bliskich związków z innymi idolkami czy seksualnych podtekstów w udostępnianych przez nią treściach. W niniejszym artykule przedstawione zostało studium przypadku internetowego i medialnego hejtu, polegającego na tym, że internauci za pomocą reakcji i komentarzy dotyczących sfery prywatnej wpływali na odbiór pracy zawodowej oraz zdrowie psychiczne artystki, co doprowadziło do jej samobójstwa w 2019 r. Artykuł problematyzuje pełne nienawiści treści poprzez analizę elementów współczesnego krajobrazu medialnego oraz mechanizmów paniki moralnej jako zjawiska stymulowanego przez strukturę współczesnych mediów.
The socially unacceptable behavior of Choi Jin Ri – known professionally as Sulli – resulted in a wave of moral panic which spread among the South Korea netizens. Anti-fans gathered around the artist after her transgressions against the unwritten rules of Korean pop culture industry – a sort of ethos regulating the behavior of idols and their relationships with fans. The conservative society rejected Choi Jin Ri’s feminist ideas, her close relationship with other woman idols, and the sexual innuendo in the content she published on social media. This article constitutes a case study of the Internet and media hate, with particular emphasis on the way in which Internet users’ comments and reactions to Choi Jin Ri’s private life affected both the reception of her work and her mental health, which in consequence lead to the artist’s suicide in 2019. The article discusses the issue of performative hate in the content published by South Korean Internet users by analyzing selected elements of contemporary media landscape – the pursuit of scandal, the increase in media voyeurism, and the loss of privacy among public figures resulting from attempts at satisfying the needs and curiosity of fans – as well as the moral panic mechanisms understood as a social phenomenon facilitated by the structure of contemporary media.

Eric Harris i Dylan Klebold są odpowiedzialni za jedną z największych masowych strzelanin szkolnych w USA, znanej jako masakra w Columbine High School. Wydarzenie to zaowocowało ogólnokrajową paniką moralną skupioną wokół reprezentacji przemocy w grach komputerowych, muzyce i filmie. Nastoletni mordercy współcześnie posiadają rzeszę aktywnych internetowych fanek, a sam fandom określa siebie jako Columbiners. Fandom ten jest osobliwą podgrupą True Crime Community, czyli większej społeczności zainteresowanej kryminologią i psychologią przestępców. Adoracja masowych i seryjnych morderców, szczególnie przez kobiety, nie jest nowym fenomenem. Zjawisko to starano się tłumaczyć parafilią oraz wyjaśnieniami ewolucyjnymi, jednak fanki sprawców masakry w Columbine High School zdają się wymykać tym uzasadnieniom. W niniejszym artykule pokazano na przykładzie fandomu Columbiners, że fascynacja mordercami może objawiać się nie tylko w formie ich seksualizacji, ale także poprzez empatyzowanie i utożsamianie się z osobami zbrodniarzy na bazie daleko posuniętych rekontestualizacji ich wizerunków w przestrzeni cyfrowej.
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are responsible for one of the most tragic mass school shootings in the US, know as The Columbine High School Massacre. This event brought about nation-wide moral panic concerning the depiction of violence in digital games, music and film. Interestingly, the teen murders have accumulated a fan base whose members are active online and refer to themselves as Columbiners. This fandom is a peculiar subgroup of True Crime Community, a larger community interested in criminology and the psychology of felons. The worship-like admiration of both serial and mass killers – particularly by women – is not a new phenomenon; there have been attempts to explain it away in the context of paraphilia and evolution. However, the fans of Columbine High School shooters elude such interpretations. This article analyses the case of Columbine fandom to demonstrate that the fascination with the murders need not involve sexualization, but can develop through empathizing and identifying with the criminals resulting from the radical recontextualization of their image in the digital pace.

The fascination with crime, hastily described by some as a symptom of moral degradation of Western culture, seems to be a defence mechanism used by individuals to deal with social transgressions and anomalies represented by serious crimes. The aim of this article is to analyse the growing popularity of true crime through the lens of Mary Douglas’s theory of purity and pollution, with a particular emphasis on the methods of dealing with anomalies appearing within conceptual schemata of a given culture. For this purpose, the text has been divided into four parts: the first part briefly presents the history of true crime; the second part analyses the idea of murder through the lens of Douglas’s theory; the third part discusses the reasons behind the popularity of true crime narratives; and the fourth part showcases how individuals use true crime stories as tools to deal with anomalies.
