Opis:
The problem of justification of the almighty and perfect Creator in the face of the fact that there is evil in the world was posed as early as the 3rd century BC by Epicureans and Stoics. The author of the article uses St. Thomas Aquinas’ and G.W. Leibniz’s philosophical inspirations to demonstrate by means of formal-logical means that inferring non-existence of evil from existence of God, as well as non-existence of God from existence of evil is a logical error. The analysis begins with the theory of an omniscient, infallible and omnipotent being, identified with God. “Will”, “allowance” and “objection” with respect to facts are differentiated and the law of logical squares with respect to acts of will and the iteration of states of God’s will are presented. A theistic axiology is suggested, religious fatalism and the superstition of predestination are refuted. The whole of the axiomatic calculus tends to the conclusion that evil in the world of the omnipotent Creator results from the purposefully established fortuitousness within the laws of nature, in the name of man’s freedom of choice and possibilities of development.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the main strands of the Marilyn M. Adams’s response to the problem of evil in contrast with the mainstream of the analytic theodicy. The most important difference between the standard analytic attitude to the problem of evil and that proposed by Adams is that she abandons the question about God’s reasons i.e. goods which could be morally sufficient reasons for permitting bad states of affairs to occur, especially instances of apparently pointless suffering (so-called gratuitous evils). Adams concentrates on the problem of horrendous evils i.e. evils which constitute a threat to the meaning of one’s life and prima facie undercut all positive value of one’s existence. Adams, inspired by the French thinker Simone Weil, seeks the resolution of the problem of evil in the crucified Christ’s identification with sufferers (and also in the idea of universal salvation). In the paper I analyse some weaknesses of the Adams’s theodicy, esp. I raise a query if we can give up the oldest question about evil: unde malum.

The author discusses the question whether an alternative version of cosmological and bio-logical evolution could have been actualized to eliminate negative phenomena specific for evolutionary processes in our universe. Specifically, one tries to answer whether the omnipotent God could have created quite different world with different logical principles and diverse laws of nature. Maybe such a world would be better than our universe regarded by Leibniz as the best of all possible universes. In trying to solve this problem, one has to remember that the process of evolution co-directs the created world to Divine ideals, values, and purposes; it does not, however, destroy by a logic of necessity or by a determinism of events, which would limit the freedom of creation. It does not eliminate pain and it does not change suffering into joy; it only shows the deepest meaning of the struggles thanks to which biological pain manifests its creative role.

Opis:
The author claims that neither utility, nor perfection of any object can constitute the essence of good. Utility is the so-called relational attribute, therefore it is variable, and the objects perfect with regard to some respect can be used for bad purposes. Moral virtues also cannot express the essence of good, for their positive character is defined by the fact that they are good. With respect to the scholastic formulation ens et bonum convertuntur, the author says that existence itself, even of the objects perfect to a certain extent, is not good because in the concept of ens scholastics meant the being which is God, and the remaining objects are good inasmuch as they come from God. The scholastic tradition called God good because He created everything according to His good will. Here the author discusses the problem of the universal axiological illusion in the context of the absolute power of God (potestas absoluta). The so-called teleological definition of good (bonum est quod omnia appetunt) is thought to be insufficient, just like the definition that bonum est diffusivum sui. The objection to the first conception says that it understands “good” as an entirely static state of things. In this state all potentialities of an object gain their fulfilment. The second objection, in the spirit of Plotinus’ emanationism, is criticised because it sees good as giving of itself, in which the emanating factor does not participate in its creation. Drawing on some strains of scholastic philosophy and I. Kant, the author formulates a thesis that the essence of good is good will and that God can be called good only then when by creating the world He descends in it (descensio). The God of religion and Christian philosophy fulfils the conditions that determine the essence of good. This is confirmed by the Persons of the Holy Trinity who mutually give Themselves, the creation of finite persons, and the Incarnation. Addressing the problem of evil, the author claims that the only bad thing in the world is bad will. Accordingly, suffering and the so-called natural evil is not evil and the acts of bad will were allowed by God, for otherwise no finite person could know what bad will consists in.

The subject of the present study are the pastoral exhortations contained in XL Homiliarum in Evangelia (“Homilies for Gospels”) by Pope Gregory the Great. 761 pastoral appeals have been studied. It has been found that the leading motif around which particular pastoral appeal focuses is the program of achieving Christian perfection realized by way of purification, enlightenment and unification with God. Pope Gregory the Great’s program of pastoral work is a program of achieving Christian perfection. It is characterized by integral formation. The priority of the program is spiritual-‑intellectual formation. Theo-centric, and not only Christo-centric direction of the program is very clear. In the whole program eschatological motifs play the leading and dominating role. The charity action is mainly directed to the needs and spiritual aid serving the salvation of the man. Saint Gregory’s program is characterized by the principle of moderation. In the light of the above reflections it can be said that St Gregory the Great’s program of pastoral work maintains timeless topicality in the Church.

The article presents a new commentary to one of the most popular poems which still evokes most controversy among interpreters – Black Man. To the author the poem is a work of the universal matter embodying the eternal battle of the good and the evil in the Bolshevik’s Russia where everyone kept vigilant watch on everyone. Proving this thesis not only does he develop a detailed analysis but he also exposes sources of the text as well as its complex editing paths that show the developing of Black Man up to the last version. The accomplished statistic analysis of the poem the key words of which are “person” and “black” demonstrates its universality and introduces Yesenin’s work into intercultural dialogue of national literatures on permanent basis.

Conscience clause is a special legal regulation that enables the individual to refrain from certain actions, that he is obliged by the law, but which in his conviction, are contrary to his conscience. On one hand, this article shows that clause of conscience in contemporary legislation seems to be something natural because it gives the individual freedom of conscience, but on the other hand – some trends appear to legally narrow it or even to cancel the conscience clause. These trends appear in the context of contemporary tendencies against life. Presented analyses defend the conscience clause again and refer basically to medical professions. The base for this legal regulation constitutes the right to conscientious objection whereas this objection should always be constructive. Existence of the right to conscientious objection is confirmed by the analyses carried out on philosophical – ethical and theological – moral levels, and especially by the concept of natural right. The article also depicts that deep conviction of right to conscientious objection does mean that moral dilemmas concerning refusal to participation in evil do not exist. In some cases conscientious objection becomes contemporary form of martyrdom.

This paper entitled “The Provocative Reinterpretation of the Biblical Motives in Oskar Kokoschka's Gorejący krzak ciernisty” seeks to analyse and interpret this drama with an aim to prove its pre-expressionistic character. Its heroes are paradigms of sex deprived of personalities. They have no personal names but only generic names: Woman and Man. The most important lines of interpretation lead the recipient to biblical symbolism that combines Man's suffering and death with Jesus Christ's redemptive offering; now Woman is primarily identified with inexhaustible sexual passion symbolised by the titular burning thornbush, but then with Mary the virgin and mother. It is worth noting all the strata of the signs of the stage work, owing to the innovative pre-expressionistic character of the drama: the poetic language with its dominating adialogue as a form of expression, the architectonic and three-dimensional stage design, and contrast as a principle that governs the selection of colours.

Facing the economic crisis (began in 2007) managers and political leaders pay more attention to the postulate of socially responsible business. The axiological turn gives new possibilities to implement ethical standards in the sphere of economy. Alas, at the same time, this task evokes the following problems. Firstly, as social researchers, we need to know how to compose heterogeneous axiological systems (to join rules of ethics with the imperative of economic efficiency). Secondly, as market participants, we have to find the formula of mutual understanding (being seen as precondition of our ethical claims).

Autor przytacza zarzuty czołowych ewolucjonistów skierowane pod adresem religii chrześcijańskiej (argument z istnienia zła w świecie) i przedstawia tradycyjne odpowiedzi sformułowane w świetle filozofii św. Augustyna i Leibniza. Co najistotniejsze, autor podkreśla, że odpowiedzi na zarzuty ewolucjonistów można upatrywać w samym darwinizmie, który wyjaśnia genezę i przyczyny zła moralnego i fizycznego.
Author argues against the view that accepting the Darwinian idea of evolution precludes the possibility to be a faithful Christian. Author cites the objections of leading evolutionists to the Christian religion (argument from the existence of evil in the world) and presents traditional answers formulated in the light of the philosophy of Saint Augustine and Leibniz. Most important, author emphasizes that answers to the objections of evolutionists can be seen in Darwinism itself which explains the origin and causes of moral and physical evil.
