The essay examines the description of virtue as a craft that governs the proper use of possessions in Plato’s Euthydemus and Stoicism. In the first part, I discuss Socrates’ parallel between wisdom and the crafts in the Euthydemus, and the resulting argument concerning the value of external and bodily possessions. I then offer some objections, showing how Socrates’ craft analogy allows one to think of possessions as (qualifiedly) good and ultimately fails to offer a defense of virtue’s sufficiency for happiness. In the second part, I examine the Stoics’ craft analogy and note a number of differences from Socrates’ account in the Euthydemus. These include the Stoic claim that external advantages never make any contribution to happiness, even when properly used, and the claim that, unlike other crafts, wisdom does not require any external possessions in order to be exercised and yield benefit and happiness. I then place these differences against the backdrop of the debate regarding virtue’s sufficiency for happiness and argue that the Stoic craft model of virtue fares better than its Socratic antecedent.

This article deals with the category of happiness and its importance and role for the young people in the 21st century. Happiness in this dimension, however, is not understood as a state of satisfaction (in the individual dimension), but as a goal to which we aspire in our life. The text presents an axiological presentation of the issue, and the considerations cited in the article were referred to one of the ethical positions, which is the idea of eudaimonism.

Although Bertrand Russell is probably most famous for his “logical atomism,” it is his ethical thought that this article will attempt to contrast with the ethics of the founder of the ancient atomism: Democritus of Abdera. Russell has himself suggested certain affinity here. More concerned with practice than theory, both philosophers advocate a certain teleological and eudemonistic morality; furthermore, they both adopt the same approaches to various related topics. Yet, what had only been outlined by Democritus was extensively developed by Russell. Hence, it is worth examining whether there is any deeper common ground between the two: can Russell’s clarity throw some light on Democritus’ fragments?

The article deals with several issues related to the concept of happiness that emerge from Plato’s triptych: the Gorgias, the Republic and the Laws. The focus is on (1) the question of the alleged overcoming of the eudaimonistic imperative, i.e., natural human pursuit of happiness, in the didactic message of the Republic; (2) the question of to what extent the path of cognition ending in the contemplation of the perfect being is at the same time a strive for the supreme happiness; (3) the dilemma of choosing between a reductive and a cumulative model of complete satisfaction in human life; and finally (4) the problem of affiliative conditions of full life satisfaction.

J. S. Mill is commonly considered as a representative of psychological hedonism. However, his utilitarianism has also eudaimonic and perfectionistic aspects. Thus, various aspects are interelated with one another not only in his moral philosophy, but are present also in his political philosophy. Interpretators of Mill’s philosophy inquire: how those aspects can be reconciled and if Mill's conception can be consistent then? Main aim of the paper is to explain and justify the view, that the idea of happiness by J. S. Mill based on the greatest happiness principle is founded on both traditions present in the Ancient times: eudaimonism and hedonism. I assume, that: in philosophy of J. S. Mill, formulated in the perspective of both traditions of the idea of happiness and good life, hedonism can be reconciled with eudaimonism and perfectionsm. Philosopher can be qualified as many-sided and eclectic, thus denominating his exclusively as hedonist would be incomplete and would be a result of too hasty and imprecise reading of his works.

Opis:
Along the history of ethics there is a controversy concerning the subject-matter of ethics itself − is it focused on the ways of fulfilling one's life (happiness) or is it the normative theory of the moral duty? The author of the paper takes into considerations three concepts of ethics which were developed by Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas and Antonio Rosmini. The classical model of replacing ethics by eudaimonology is presented by Aristotle. Eudaimonism is connected in his philosophy of the human praxis with conceiveing of good in terms of the end of human action (teleological concept of good). Eudaimonia consists in fulfillment of the human life as a whole. Therefore the ultimate end of the human life is understood as the immanent end of the human nature. Aristotle identifies the moral good with the good of the human nature (natural fallacy in ethics). On the one hand the ethics of St. Thomas is dependent on the eudaimonistic views of Aristotle and on the other hand it goes beyond naturalism by pointing out the transcendent ultimate end of the human life which is idendified with God. In his theological thought St. Thomas Aquinas seeks to develop personalism. The good of person is the reason for an attitude of love on which the community of persons is founded. Because of the presence of the eudaimonistic and personalistic elements the ethics of Aquinas remains metodologically inconsistent. Antonio Rosmini thanks to his inspiration by the ethical thought of I. Kant distinguishes two diffrent practical sciences: eudaimonology and ethics. He refuses, however, Kantian apriorism and acognitivism. The moral duty is justified by the data of the moral experience. For the essence of morality consists in recognition of a being in accordance with its axiological order. Eudaimonology deals with the subjective good which is related to the nature of subject and only ethics discovers the moral obligation of affirming good for its own sake (objective good).

Kiedy mówi się o etyce Nowego Testamentu albo pisze się o niej książkę, często nie zostaje wyjaśnione, co to oznacza i czego należy spodziewać się po takim projekcie. Od współczesnej etyki oczekuje się głównie odpowiedzi na praktyczne pytania oraz weryfikacji argumentów etycznych i języka, jakim się posługuje. Etyka nowotestamentalna jest przede wszystkim napomnieniem, parenezą; chodzi w niej o czynienie tego, co zostało uznane za słuszne i o wzrost w dobru. Pod tym względem etyka Nowego Testamentu jest podobna do starożytnego rozumienia etyki, przykładowo w stoicyzmie.
Wo man von einer Ethik des Neuen Testaments spricht oder ein entsprechendes Buch schreibt, ist oft nicht geklärt, was das beinhaltet und was von einem solchen Projekt zu erwarten ist. Von heutiger Ethik erwartet man vor allem die Beantwortung praktischer Fragen und die Prüfung ethischer Argumente und ethischer Sprache. Neutestamentliche Ethik ist vor allem Ermahnung, Paränese; ihr geht es um das Tun des bereits als richtig Erkannten und um das Wachstum im Guten. Insofern ähnelt sie dem antiken Verständnis von Ethik, etwa der Stoa.
When we speak on New Testament Ethics or somebody writes a book on that subject we often wrongly presuppose what that means and what we can legitimately expect from such a project. From the Ethics of today we expect answers on practical questions, studies on ethical arguments and on moral language. New Testament Ethics, however, is primarily exhortation, parenesis which aims at acting according to what is recognized as morally right and at moral growth. Insofar it is similar to how Ancient Ethics, especially the Stoa, understands itself.
