    The article describes the ethnic exclusion of Aboriginal minority in Australia. Using the method of cultural comparative studies the author examines representation of Aborigines in the literary journalism by Polish writer Mariusz Marczewski who travelled to Australia and observed urban Aboriginal diaspora. This representation is juxtaposed with the anthropological monograph of Aboriginal customs by Wojciech Bęben and with historiographical books about Australia. This context helps to point particular features of Marczewski’s picture of Aborigines which shows his postcolonial sensitivity, poetic language and melancholic sadness on account of the death of Aborigines’ culture.

    Opis:
    The education of teachers at university is a task that is being undertaken at a time of social and cultural changes, external unrest and political transformation that are affecting education itself. However, maintaining a humanistic approach to education is important. Therefore Polish language teachers at schools need to be responsible for educating young people who are sensitive to the welfare of the others, do not use the language of hate, but are critical thinkers; while at the same time university teachers are responsible for educating teachers who are resistant to political pressure. The author of the article presents a selection of literary works that refer to exclusion on grounds of nationality that can be read with students at different levels of education. Such a strategy proves that Polish language teachers can use literature to uphold humanistic values.

    Wykluczenie społeczne wiąże się z ograniczeniem możliwości zaspokajania własnych potrzeb przez pewne jednostki bądź grupy społeczne. Za czynniki w największym stopniu łączące się z marginalizacją uznaje się ubóstwo oraz sytuację zdrowotną. Te z kolei związane są z sytuacją na rynku pracy i związanymi z nią problemami: bezrobociem, bezdomnością, niepełnosprawnością. Sytuacja Romów w Polsce po roku 1989 była bardzo trudna, co znalazło swój wyraz w krytycznych raportach międzynarodowych organizacji, zajmujących się badaniem sytuacji tej etnicznej mniejszości w państwach aspirujących do członkostwa w UE. Pierwszą konkretną próbą rozwiązania problemów tej grupy był Pilotażowy program na rzecz społeczności romskiej w województwie małopolskim ustanowiony w 2001 roku. Pozytywny odbiór społeczny programu sprawił, że działania były kontynuowane na obszarze całej Polski. Artykuł przedstawia aktualną sytuację Romów zamieszkujących Małopolskę po 13 latach działań programów integracyjnych, szczególnie w wymiarze związanym z edukacją, zatrudnieniem oraz sposobem odbierania tej grupy przez resztę społeczeństwa.
    Social exclusion is linked to limited opportunities in meeting either individual or social community needs. The most significant factors leading to marginalisation are considered to be poverty, health and wellbeing. Those factors are then linked to the situation of labour market and its indicators such as: unemployment, homelessness and disability. The sitaution of Roma Community in Poland after 1989 was very difficult. It resulted in severe criticisism reports published by international organisations which carried on research on those ethnic miniorities that aplied for UE membership. The first real attemp of how to resolve Roma Coomunity problems was the Pilot Study of Roma Community in Małopolska County in 2001. This program became succesful and was recognised by polish society which resulted in continuing it all over the country. This paper describes the present situation of Roma Community living in Małopolska County, who experienced 13 years of integration practices especially in relation to education, employment and positive attitude coming from the rest of society.

    Opis:
    This paper identifies the social impact and the pros and cons of immigrants’ life in an ethnic enclave and analyses aspects that are conducive to integration with the host society, as well as those that obstruct members of the enclave to fully integrate. Concepts of social, cultural and migration capitals and the importance of migration networks in the adaptation of immigrants were taken into consideration and the study focused on the relationship between the impact of the enclave and the possibilities of social advancement in the host society. An attempt was also made to show the social effects of the pressure exerted by the enclave on areas of economic, cultural, political self-exclusion. Integration with the host society is contingent upon the existence of a bridging capital and the building of networks connecting migrants with the external  environment, consequently enabling their wider participation in society.
    W opracowaniu wskazano społeczne skutki, czyli blaski i cienie życia imigrantów w enklawie etnicznej, wskazano również na te aspekty, które sprzyjają, i te, które stanowią przeszkodę w integracji członków enklawy społeczeństwie przyjmującym. Uwzględniono koncepcje kapitału społecznego, kulturowego i kapitału migracyjnego oraz znaczenia sieci migracyjnych w adaptacji migrantów. Szczególnie skoncentrowano się na relacji pomiędzy oddziaływaniem enklawy a możliwościami awansu społecznego w społeczeństwie przyjmującym. Podjęto próbę wskazania obszarów samowykluczenia ekonomicznego, kulturowego, politycznego jako skutków społecznych presji wywieranej przez enklawę. Warunkiem integracji ze społeczeństwem przyjmującym jest istnienie kapitału pomostowego, budowanie sieci powiązań łączących migrantów z zewnętrznym środowiskiem i umożliwiających uczestnictwo w szerszym społeczeństwie.

    European immigration policy is a complex and dynamic field of science with interdisciplinary profile. It is based on humanitarian rights and international regulations concerning immigration and development of humanity. Unfortunately, the dynamics of migration in global and European scale, especially the inflow of immigrants, (according to ONZ - irregular immigrants) has reached in EU levels which make effective integration impossible. Europe needs immigrants but is unable to assimilate them. The author describes similar situations in EU and in neighbouring countries. Immigration policy focused on securing boarders against illegal immigrants is considered to be inhumane and generates criminal behaviours. Later chance for integration is extremely difficult.

    Roma people are one of the most colourful minorities in Poland and arouse interest and controversy among contemporary Polish society, nearly monolithic in terms of ethnic origin and nationality. At present, the socio-economic situation of Roma people in Poland and in other European countries is difficult and marked with social exclusion. In the article the author identifies and describes the following symptoms of social exclusion experienced by Roma people in Poland: lack of tolerance in Polish majority, problems relating to the functioning on the labour market and access to education, low standard of living as well as the need for some actions for Roma people in Poland to be taken by governmental authorities. The author refers in the article to numerous results of current surveys on the attitude adopted by Poles towards Roma people, which prove intolerant attitude of Poles to this minority. The second fact that, in the author’s opinion, confirms social exclusion of Roma people in Poland is extremely high unemployment rate (90%) among Polish Roma, a consequence of disappearance of typical Roma professions, cultural limitations, stereotypes and very low level of education. This last reason further proves social exclusion of Roma people, although the situation in this respect is dynamically changing. As a result of actions taken by governmental authorities and because of financial support and creation of a post of a Roma assistant and a support teacher since 2004 Roma children have been widely attending schools. Roma ethnic minority is also excluded because of its very low standard of living characterised by the author on the basis of her own research carried out in the Małopolska Region. At the end of the article the author indicates governmental actions aimed at fighting the symptoms of social exclusion taken within the “Program for the Roma Community in Poland”.
