Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study of abundance and secondary production of neustonic and planktonic bacteria inhabiting estuarine Lake Gardno. The obtained data indicate that numbers of bacterioneuston were only slightly higher than of bacterioplankton. The rate of secondary production of bacteria was higher in the film layer than in the surface layer and subsurface water. Bacterial abundance and production were changing with seasons. Differences among studied bacteriological parameters were determined among sites across Lake Gardno.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących oznaczenia ogólnej liczby i produkcji wtórnej bakterioneustonu i bakterioplanktonu zasiedlającego estuariowe przymorskie jezioro Gardno zlokalizowane na terenie Słowińskiego Parku Narodowego. Badania mikrobiologiczne prowadzono w trzech warstwach wody (film, błona powierzchniowa, woda podpowierzchniowa). Uzyskane wyniki badań wykazały, że ogólna liczba bakterii neustonowych była nieznacznie większa niż bakterii planktonowych. Poziom produkcji bakteryjnej w filmie powierzchniowym był wyższy niż w błonie powierzchniowej i podpowierzchniowej warstwie wody. Wykazano znaczące różnice wartości badanych parametrów bakteriologicznych w różnych częściach badanego jeziora. Stwierdzono znaczącą dynamikę zmian sezonowych liczebności bakterii i ich produktywności.

Opis:
The coastal zone and estuaries of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong have great potential not only for economic development but also for protection and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem. Nowadays, due to industrial, agricultural and anthropogenic activities signs of water pollution in the region have been found. The level of surface water pollution can be determined by traditional methods through observatory stations. However, a traditional approach to determine water contamination is discontinuous, and thereby makes pollution assessment of the entire estuary very difficult. Nowadays, remote sensing technology has been developed and widely applied in many fields, for instance, in monitoring water environments. Remote sensing data combined with information from in-situ observations allow for extraction of polluted components in water and accurate measurements of pollution level in the large regions ensuring objectivity. According to results obtained from Spot-5 imagery of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, the extracted pollution components, like BOD, COD and TSS can be determined with the root mean square error, the absolute mean error and the absolute mean percentage error (%): ±4.37 (mg/l) 3.86 (mg/l), 27%; ±55.32 (mg/l), 48.30 (mg/l), 14%; and ±32.90 (mg/l), 23.38 (mg/l), 28%; respectively. Obtained outcomes guarantee objectivity in assessing water contaminant levels in the investigated regions and show the advantages of remote sensing applications in Resource and Environmental Monitoring in relation to Water – Air – Land.
Strefa przybrzeżna i ujścia rzek w Quang Ninh – Hai Phong ma potencjał do rozwoju gospodarczego i ochrony różnorodności biologicznej i ekosystemu. Ostatnio stwierdzono tam wiele oznak zanieczyszczenia wody. Otrzymane wyniki gwarantują obiektywizm przy ocenie poziomu zanieczyszczeń w badanych regionach i pokazują korzyści zastosowań teledetekcji w monitoringu zasobów i środowiska w odniesieniu do wody – powietrza – terenu.

Opis:
Flood events in many river basins with highly variable discharge values remove accumulated sediments from the riverbed and estuaries. These sediments are exported to the shelf and the adjacent coastlines. Data for rainfall and river discharge for the Guadiana River basin in southwestern Iberia show a strong link with North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index patterns. A negative NAO index usually results in more rainfall, and subsequent flooding in the river basin during winter months. During the second half of the 20th century, the flow regime of the Guadiana River and its tributaries have been increasingly constrained by the construction of dams. The consequences were a reduction of coarse-grained sediment export from the upper river basin to the estuary, and a reduction in the number and type of floods.

W pozyskanych próbkach wyznaczono stężenie kadmu i manganu metodami spektrometrii atomowej.
In order to investigate the effect of salinity level on the concentration of cadmium and manganese in the surface microlayer, several samples were collected from an estuarine lake Gardno in a quarterly cycle over the period of four years. Three testing stations were established in locations typical of this lake. In the lake, one can distinguish three areas with various levels of salinity, with a sampling site for each of these areas. The volume of water taken as samples varied, depending on the techniques used. During the experiment, surface microlayer samples of ca 0.1 and 0.25 mm were obtained. The subsurface water was obtained at the depth of 15 cm. The collected samples were analysed with an atomic spectrometer in order to determine the concentration of cadmium and manganese.

Sediments and organisms were sampled to determine organotin contents – butyltins (BTs) and phenyltins (PhTs) – at 12 locations in an estuarine ecosystem, the Lagoon of Venice, characterised by varying contamination impacts. The results showed that organotin contamination in sediments is at lower levels, ranging from 2.5±0.1 to 84±1 ng g−1 (d.w.) for ΣBTs and from 0.8±0.2 to 7±1 ng g−1 (d.w.), for ΣPHTs, than in organisms, where the highest concentrations were found in filter feeders like mussels – from 60±3 to 7632±148 ng g−1 (d.w.) for ΣBTs and from 0.80±0.01 to 4005±121 ng g−1 (d.w.) for ΣPHTs. The possible risk to human health was assessed on the basis of the consumption of edible species sampled in some areas of the lagoon.

Due to the unique geographic location, complex navigation environment and intense vessel traffic, a considerable number of maritime accidents occurred in estuarine waters during recent years which caused serious loss of life, property and environmental contamination. Based on the historical data of maritime accidents from 2003 to 2012, which is collected from Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration, this paper conducted a risk analysis of maritime accidents by applying Bayesian network and fault tree analysis. First a Bayesian network model was introduced to describe the consequence of accidents based on the accident investigation report. Then fault tree analysis was applied to estimate the probability on the basis of accident statistics and ship traffic flow. Finally the risk of maritime accidents in Shenzhen Waters was depicted through the consequence multiplied by the probability of an accident.

The authors described micro-scale carbonate concretions occurring at a depth of about 41 m within Holocene sandy sediments filling the Guadiana River paleovalley, representing the transitional fluvial- -estuarine facies. Despite their minute sizes, the micro-concretions show a complex internal structure. Regular distribution of Mg, Mn and Ca can be assigned to a chemical zoning, pointing to precipitation under varying chemical conditions. Based on morphological and chemical peculiarities, four types of concretions can be distinguished. Detrital Fe-Mg-carbonates form nuclei. At first, Mn-rich carbonate precipitated as a coating, which is coherent with the sequence of precipitation of carbonates associated with bacteria-mediated oxidation of organic matter. Subsequently, the main bodies of concretions precipitated as Fe-carbonate (siderite). The last precipitation episode is marked by enrichment in Ca. The XRD patterns show the presence of a mixture of discrete carbonate phases.

Opis:
The present study investigates the influence of seasonal dynamics on macrobenthic assemblages in four seasons of 2017—2018 from the central sector of Indian Sundarbans which is under the constant threat of climate change. Besides taxonomic analysis, a traitbased approach has also been applied to assess the change in their ecosystem functioning. The maximum species density (11675 ± 11883.31 ind. m−2) was observed during the spring season which declines considerably in the monsoon season (5875 ± 6224.08 ind. m−2). A total of 95 macrobenthic taxa were recorded from Sundarbans and they were dominated by families like Capitellidae, Donacidae, Magelonidae, Nereididae, Paraonidae and Spionidae. Overall, polychaetes have shown higher taxonomic and functional variation than other groups. Opportunistic polychaete species have shown a prominent compositional shift during post-monsoon seasons. Both the univariate and multivariate analyses have shown a significant relation between macrobenthic composition and environmental parameters. SIMPER has depicted that environmental parameters made the station 4 unique for several types of molluscs like Acteocina estriata, Stenothyra deltae and Meretrix meretrix during spring. Trait percentages also showed a seasonal succession pattern and among the trait categories, burrowers and deposit feeders dominated the estuary. A gradual increase in suspension feeders in spring has been noticed. RLQ approach with fourth-corner analysis was used to unravel the relationship between traits and environmental parameters. Hence, the present study provided a comprehensive idea about the species composition along with their trait categories from such a dynamic habitat. That could be the first stepping stone for a long term monitoring of macrobenthic assemblages from this largest delta on earth.

Zooplankton is an important bioindicator of ecosystem functioning. Knowledge of the seasonal fluctuation in the zooplankton population in estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans is rather limited. In the present study, we analysed the community structure of zooplankton assemblages and their spatio-temporal variations based on different multivariate statistics and indicator value analysis. A total of 56 taxa were identified and the density was primarily dominated by planktonic copepods and few meroplankton communities during four sampling seasons. The most abundant species were: Acartia spinicauda, Acartia sp., Bestiolina similis, Euterpina acutifrons, Labidocera acuta, Paracalanus aculeatus, Paracalanus parvus and Paracalanus indicus. Canonical Correspondence Analysis highlighted that temperature, pH, DO, salinity and nutrients were the prevailing environmental parameters associated with significant spatio-temporal changes of zooplankton distribution in this area. The highest abundance of zooplankton was recorded in winter, followed by monsoon, summer and spring. Throughout the study period, different zooplankton indices were observed in good condition. Seasonal occurrence of dominant zooplankton with high IndVal index was markedly observed and it might be used as a potential bioindicator for a particular season and environmental condition in this estuarine complex. The results of this study provide evidence for the presence of warm water species in the estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans and can be a clear indication of climate change-mediated elevated temperature in the estuarine system. Our results underscore the high diversity of zooplankton from mangrove dominated estuarine complex and emphasize the need for long-term monitoring in ecologically fragile ecosystems like the Sundarbans Estuarine System.

Cd and Pb concentrations were determined in samples of water (for both dissolved and suspended particulate matter) and surface sediments (total and <63 μm fractions).Or ganic matter was analysed in the sediments, while temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the estuarine water The metal concentrations determined in this study were: 1.47 ± 1.08 μg Cd g−1 and 14.68 ± 4.31 μg Pb g−1 in surface sediments; 2.21 ± 1.33 μg Cd g−1 and 25.70 ± 7.09 μg Pb g−1 in the <63 μm sediment fraction; 0.18 ± 0.11 μg Cd g−1 and below the analytical detection limit of Pb in suspended particulate matter. Furthermore, dissolved Cd and Pb were lower than the norms for marine and estuarine waters (2 μg dm−3 for Cd and 5 μg dm−3 for Pb, E.P.A.). Simultaneously, the effects of Cd and Pb were studied on recently hatched larvae of Ch. granulata, through 96-hour semi-static acute assays.Via bility was the criterion assessed in the assays.LC 50 (96 h) for Cd was 46.43 μg dm−3 (36.92 − 56.34 μg dm−3), whilst that for Pb was 1. 0 mg dm−3 (0.79 − 1.23 mg dm−3), which demonstrates that Cd is more toxic towards larvae.F inally, both LC50 values determined for Cd and Pb were higher than the corresponding metal concentrations measured in the Bah´ıa Blanca environment.
