Opis:
The article explores Olga Sedakova’s reflection on the theme of freedom, expressed in her essayistic texts. The intertextual method of text analysis is used. The essayist interprets the meaning and value of freedom in human life relying on someone else’s word. In the analyzed essays there appear intertextual references to other texts of the Russian culture (Pushkin, Blok, Mandelshtam, Maria Petrovykh, Pasternak, Brodsky, Dmitry Prigov, Sergei Averintsev) and of the European tradition (Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe, Eluard, Schweitzer). A particular source on the basis of which Sedakova philosophizes is the Holy Scripture. She perceives the issue of freedom primarily in the poetic, moral (as the human condition) and eschatological perspective.
В статье рассматриваются рассуждения Ольги Седаковой на тему свободы, помещенные в ее эссеистических текстах. Используется интертекстуальный метод анализа текстов. Смысл и ценность свободы в жизни человека эссеистка толкует, опираясь на «чужое слово». В анализируемых текстах появляются интертекстуальные связи и отношения с другими текстами русской (А. Пушкин, А. Блок, О. Мандельштам, М. Петровых, Б. Пастернак, И. Бродский, Д. Пригов, С. Аверинцев) и европейской (Данте, У. Шекспир, И. Гете, П. Элюар, А. Швейцер) культуры. Особым источником, на основе которого философствует Седакова, является Священное Писание. Проблема свободы видится поэтессой прежде всего в поэтическом, моральном (как положение человечества) и эсхатологическом аспектах.

The following article presents the context of the literary debut of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, one of the most famous Japanese writers of the twentieth century. His earliest literary interests, student days, and first steps in literary and theatrical worlds are discussed on the basis of the autobiographical essay “Seishun monogatari” (1932). Moreover, the article depicts Tanizaki’s first unsuccessful attempts to publish his early works, which were oriented towards aestheticism, in the days when naturalism was the dominant and most popular literary school. However, Tanizaki’s patience was rewarded and thanks to a favorable review written by great writer Nagai Kafū, Tanizaki could join the elitist and closed literary world.

The following paper presents some of the problems of the Bulgarian publishing of the co-authored book Middle Europe in Three Essays, which includes the essays of three Slavic authors — Andrzej Stasiuk, Yuri Andrukhovych and Jáchym Topol. The preface is written by Ani Burova. The focus is placed on the conception of gathering the texts in one book and also on the problems of editing and translation, such as order of the essays, translation of toponyms and ethnonims etc.
Artykuł poświęcony jest genezie bułgarskiego zbioru esejów pt. Europa Środkowa w trzech esejach, który zawiera utwory trzech wybitnych słowiańskich pisarzy: Andrzeja Stasiuka, Jurija Andruchowycza i Jáchyma Topola oraz przedmowę autorstwa Ani Burowej. W artykule zaprezentowano koncepcję zbioru, a także omówiono problemy edytorskie towarzyszące scalaniu tekstów (między innymi związane z ustaleniem kolejności esejów, ujednoliceniem tekstów pod względem technicznym, przekładem etc.).

Kobyletskyi essay, reflecting individual artist's worldview, there are stylistic tropes and figures: metaphor, personification, simile, antithesis, adjectives, hyperbole, litotes, allusions, combining different styles vocabulary that help tie together and convey to the audience seemingly contradictory events and phenomena witnessed was an outstanding scholar and writer.

Experiencing historical time: Apocalypse and authoritarianism in inter-war Bulgarian existential philosophyThis article deals with the sense of the pace of time as reflected in the works of Bulgarian philosophers from the “philosophy of life” school, and of other thinkers active in the humanities. It is shown that the feeling of “condensed” time among the authors of the inter-war period is inevitably associated with Biblical imagery – the “reduction” of time foresees the end of time. Several authors left a lasting mark on Bulgarian intellectual history due to their sensitivity to the sharp turns of the age, and their awareness of the intense “flow” of time.The most prominent among tchem were Spiridon Kazandjiev and Yanko Yanev, authors with right-wing political leanings. This article reveals how the end of time provoked in them not only distress and anxiety but also exhilaration at what lay ahead, as if it were the realisation of a longcherished dream. Doświadczanie czasu historycznego. Apokalipsa i autorytaryzm w bułgarskiej filozofii egzystencjalnej okresu międzywojennegoNiniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest doświadczeniu tempa czasu, odzwierciedlonemu w twórczości bułgarskich filozofów sytuujących się w nurcie „filozofii życia” w najszerszym ze znaczeń, jak również innych myślicieli. Zostaje w nim pokazane, jak poczucie czasu „skondensowanego” u autorów okresu międzywojennego nieodzownie kojarzone jest z obrazami biblijnymi – czas „zredukowany” zapowiada zbliżający się koniec.Myśliciele, którzy pozostawiają trwałe ślady w bułgarskiej historii intelektualistów właśnie w powodu swej wrażliwości na gwałtowne zwroty w czasie, na intensywność jego upływu, to m.in. Spirydon Kazandżijew [Спиридон Казанджиев], Janko Janew [Янко Янев], Najden Szejtanow [Найден Шейтанов] – autorzy o orientacji prawicowej. Artykuł ukazuje, jak „koniec czasów” budzi u nich nie tylko udrękę i niepokój, ale i podekscytowanie z powodu tego, co nadchodzi – pojmowanego jako urzeczywistnienie długo pielęgnowanego marzenia.

The book by Mariusz Jochemczyk, Facing tradition. Sketches in Silesian oikology, serves here as an example of some broader tendency, which can be described as Silesian essay writing or Silesian autobiographical essay writing. The author of the article asks a question about commonalities between such books as Nagrobek Ciotki Cili (Aunt Cilia’s Tombstone) by Stefan Szymutko, Antygona w świecie korporacji (Antigone in corporation) by Tadeusz Sławek, Listy z Rzymu (Letters from Rome) by Zbigniew Kadłubek, Lajerman by Aleksander Nawarecki and the afore mentioned book by Mariusz Jochemczyk. Certain essayistic ‘idioms’ of the discussed authors are being described here. The author asks about the future of the phenomenon, which refers to regional issues but certainly is not only of a local nature.

Autora interesuje to, w jaki sposób i dokąd prowadzi Noblistkę jej doświadczenie pierwotnej nieprzystawalności słowa do rzeczy, jak rzutuje ono na widzenie samego fenomenu rozumienia literatury, jaki obraz pisania wywodzi w swojej refleksji autorka Nizin. Uwagi Müller analizowane są w kontekście filozofii języka źródłowego. Takie komparatystyczne ujęcie prowadzi do próby określenia tego, jakie formuły tożsamości języka i rzeczywistości odnajdziemy w esejach niemieckiej Noblistki.
The paper focuses on the truth of language work in Herta Müller’s essays. The author is interested in what way and where the experience of the primal discrepancy between a word and a thing leads the essayist, how it affects her understanding of literature, and what kind of a picture of writing stems from her considerations. Müller’s observations are analysed in the context of the philosophy of the source language. Such a comparative approach leads to an attempt of determining what formulas of language identity and reality can be found in the essays of the German Noble prize-winner.
Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags steht der Umgang mit Sprache in den Essays von Herta Müller. Der Autor des Aufsatzes interessiert sich dafür, wie und wohin die Ur-Erfahrung der Diskrepanz zwischen Wort und Ding die Essayistin führt, wie diese sich auf ihr Literaturverständnis auswirkt und welches Bild von Schrift sich aus ihren Überlegungen ergibt. Müllers Beobachtungen werden im Zusammenhang mit der Philosophie der Ausgangssprache analysiert. Die vergleichende Methode erlaubt herauszufinden, welches Konzept von Sprachidentität und Wirklichkeit sich in den Essays der deutschen Nobelpreisträgerin finden lässt.

ABSTRACTMachine translation enables students to produce work in the target L2 which may be superior to that which they could produce otherwise.  The present study examines whether use of machine translation can be detected by teachers.  Seventeen native teachers compared and assessed the authorship of five human translations (HT) and five machine translations (MT) of Japanese news stories.  Native teachers were able to accurately detect the difference in 74.04% of cases due to increased passive clauses (a ratio of 1 to 2.5), and inappropriate pronoun use (a ratio of 1 to 6.5) when MT was used.

Artykuł ma charakter metatekstowego, analityczno-przeglądowego opracowania poświęconego esejowi jako autonomicznemu gatunkowi pisarstwa akademickiego. Celem tekstu jest zestawienie wyznaczników gatunkowych eseju i pokazanie możliwości wykorzystania jego elementów w kształceniu akademickim na kierunkach pedagogicznych. Chociaż esej jest sposobem wypowiadania się ściśle związanym z subiektywnością ludzkiego indywiduum, to jednak nie zwalnia autora z obowiązku komunikatywności. W pierwszej kolejności źródłem wiedzy o gatunku i jego wyznacznikach są głosy literaturoznawców – Jana Tomkowskiego i Tadeusza Sławka. Narracja eseistyczna nie jest obca pedagogom, dlatego następnie oddaję im głos, a na koniec spoglądam z perspektywy studenta, albowiem w dydaktyce akademickiej esej pełni funkcję zarówno tekstu użytkowego pisanego na potrzeby konkretnego przedmiotu, tutorialu, jak i w celach samopoznania, uruchomienia autorefleksji.
The article has the character of a metatextual, analytical and review study devoted to the essay as an autonomous genre of academic writing. The purpose of the text is to compile the genre determinants of the essay and to show the possibility of using its elements in the academic training of pedagogical majors. Although the essay is a mode of expression closely related to the subjectivity of the human individual, it does not relieve the author of the obligation to be communicative. First of all, the source of knowledge about the genre and its determinants are the voices of literary scholars – Jan Tomkowski and Tadeusz Slawek. The essay narrative is no stranger to pedagogues, so next I give them the floor and finally I look from the perspective of the student, for in academic didactics the essay serves the function of both an applied text written for the needs of a particular subject, a tutorial, and for the purpose of self-discovery, to trigger self-reflection.

The article analyses the dynamics of the value of happiness during war. The article is based on the material of students’ biographical essays, as well as on the results of the World Values Study. The author considers happiness as a value construct which manifests itself in a high degree of personal satisfaction with one’s activities, conditions and lifestyle, in positive emotions of joy. Citing the results of the World Values Study, the author argues that the positive dynamics of happiness in the Ukrainian society over the past decades is an important indicator of the update of the value of self-expression among Ukrainians. It is difficult to say whether this trend will continue now, as war updates survival values. The materials for the students’ “autobiographies of happiness” provide a reason for optimistic predictions. The experience of the war has become a real test of survival for Ukrainians, but at the same time it has made them reflect on the meaning of their own existence, taught them to give and to be grateful. These biographical essays are research material that can deepen our understanding of the value of happiness. They are a tool for self-reflection and a means of preserving the meaning of life in conditions where this meaning can be lost.
Artykuł analizuje dynamikę wartości szczęścia podczas wojny. Artykuł oparty jest na materiałach esejów biograficznych studentów, a także na wynikach World Values Study. Autorka uważa szczęście za konstrukt wartości, który przejawia się wysokim stopniem zadowolenia ze swoich działań, warunków i stylu życia, w pozytywnych emocjach i radości. Powołując się na wyniki World Values Survey, argumentuje, że pozytywna dynamika szczęścia w społeczeństwie ukraińskim w ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci jest ważnym wskaźnikiem aktualizacji wartości wyrażania siebie. Czy ten trend będzie się teraz utrzymywał, trudno powiedzieć, ponieważ wojna aktualizuje wartości przetrwania. Materiały do „autobiografii szczęścia” zawierają powód do optymistycznych przewidywań. Doświadczenie wojny stało się prawdziwym sprawdzianem przetrwania dla Ukraińców, ale jednocześnie skłoniło ich do zastanowienia się nad sensem własnego istnienia, nauczyło ich dawać i być wdzięcznym. Te eseje biograficzne są materiałem badawczym, który może znacznie pogłębić zrozumienie wartości szczęścia. Są narzędziem autorefleksji i środkiem zachowania sensu życia w warunkach, w których ten sens może zostać utracony.

This article constitutes an attempt at organising the non-conservative tendencies in Polish essays published in the 21st century, which apply to themes, the lowering of the tone, and forms of writing. One major stream is travel writing, which focuses not on the Mediterranean legacy, but on the ‘second world’: long-disadvantaged provincial areas. Many essayists abandon the traditional topic of books and works of art, and turn to ‘reading’ the animal world, the plant world, and the world of ordinary objects. The essay has also become a tool for introducing polarisation between that which is mainstream and that which is marginal and concerns minorities. The fact of choosing a non-traditional topic often entails a non-canonical cognitive attitude, which translates into experiments within the area of the form of expression. The author of this article argues that all those innovations can be accommodated by the flexible convention of the essay as a genre which, in principle, is supposed to constitute an artistic cognitive experiment.

Established in the United States of America after the Second World War, did the writer study the ecology lesson testified by her texts about water? Or do these writings rather go beyond the concrete and circumstantial level of existence to talk about a global philosophy of life, as it seems to acknowledge the title of her trilogy: As the Water That Flows?

The author pays attention to the Polish-Russian literary contacts after 1917. The subject of critical analysis is the translation heritage of Y. Tuvim – polish poet, writer and translator, participant of the literary club “Little Lodge in Kolomna”, founded in Warsaw by D. Filosofov. Y. Tuwim is better known as the translator of A. Pushkin, V. Mayakovsky by todays readers However, in his rich heritagethere are also works of Russian emigrants: L. Gomolitsky, N. Evreinov, V. Khodasevich.

Presented in this article are the images of Ukraine in the selected essays of Taras Prochasko, Yuri Andruchowycz and Serhiy Żadan. The analysis of the image of Lviv, Hutsul and Eastern Ukraine was based on the major determinants of the essay as a literary genre. Analyzed are the character of the narrator as well as how the autobiographical, historical, and cultural aspects affect the composition of each essay. The concept of dialogism is also explained.
