Or do these writings rather go beyond the concrete and circumstantial level of existence to talk about a global philosophy of life, as it seems to acknowledge the title of her trilogy: As the Water That Flows?

Opis:: The book by Mariusz Jochemczyk, Facing tradition. Sketches in Silesian oikology, serves here as an example of some broader tendency, which can be described as Silesian essay writing or Silesian autobiographical essay writing. The author of the article asks a question about commonalities between such books as Nagrobek Ciotki Cili (Aunt Cilia’s Tombstone) by Stefan Szymutko, Antygona w świecie korporacji (Antigone in corporation) by Tadeusz Sławek, Listy z Rzymu (Letters from Rome) by Zbigniew Kadłubek, Lajerman by Aleksander Nawarecki and the afore mentioned book by Mariusz Jochemczyk. Certain essayistic ‘idioms’ of the discussed authors are being described here. The author asks about the future of the phenomenon, which refers to regional issues but certainly is not only of a local nature.

ABSTRACTMachine translation enables students to produce work in the target L2 which may be superior to that which they could produce otherwise. The present study examines whether use of machine translation can be detected by teachers. Seventeen native teachers compared and assessed the authorship of five human translations (HT) and five machine translations (MT) of Japanese news stories. Native teachers were able to accurately detect the difference in 74.04% of cases due to increased passive clauses (a ratio of 1 to 2.5), and inappropriate pronoun use (a ratio of 1 to 6.5) when MT was used.

Opis:: The present paper analyzes beliefs about the age factor of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) with different starting ages (early vs. late starters), in different grades (in Year 7 at the beginning and in Year 12 at the end of secondary school), and with different levels of EFL proficiency (high achievers vs. low achievers). The sample for the study was drawn from a larger sample of 200 secondary school students who were part of a longitudinal study, undertaken in Switzerland between 2008 and 2015. From this sample we selected 10 early starting high-achievers, 10 early starting low-achievers, 10 late starting high-achievers, and 10 late starting low-achievers. A qualitative analysis of language experience essays written at the beginning and at the end of secondary school revealed that learners with different starting ages, in different grades, and with different levels of proficiency displayed different beliefs about the age factor. The overall lack of age effect on FL achievement found in our previous studies may be explicable in terms of a number of affective factors (e.g. disengagement of the early starters due to language practices of the classroom) and contextual factors (e.g. transition from English in primary to English in secondary).

Opis:: Объектом исследования в данной статье являются малоизвест-ные путевые очерки Бориса Константиновича Зайцева, ранее публиковавшиеся в эмигрантской периодике и недавно изданные в Санкт-Петербурге [Зайцев 2018]. Целью анализа является обнаружение, на материале путевых очерков Б.К. Зайцева о Франции, Финляндии, Италии, свойственных мировосприятию писателя акси-ологических констант и выявление присущих ему особенностей геопоэтики. Это, к примеру, восприятие современного бытия сквозь призму религиозно-философских воззрений, сквозь непреходящие ценности мирового искусства. Важно увидеть, что писатель умел на малом пространстве текста показать неповторимую взаимозави-симость истории, собственно географического пространства – государства, города – и национальной судьбы народов, что определяет онтологическую масштабность его произведений.
This report analyses the little-known travel essays by B.K. Zaitsev, previously published in the expat periodicals and recently published in St. Petersburg (B. Zaitsev, Glimpses of the Eternal. Unknown short stories, essays, memoirs, interviews / Comp., Entry article, subparagraph of the text and commentary by A.M. Lyubоmudrov. St. Petersburg: LLC Publishing House “Rostok”, 2018). The purpose of the analysis is to discover, in the material of travel essays by B.K. Zaitsev about France, Finland, and Italy, axiological constants characteristic of the writer’s worldview and to reveal the inherent features of geopoetics. This, for example, is the perception of modern life through the prism of religious and philosophical views, through the enduring values of world art. It is important to see that the writer was able in a small space of text to show the unique interdependence of history, the actual geographical space – the state, the city – and the national fate of peoples, which determines the ontological scale of his works.

Opis:: V prevodu esejev Draga Jančarja z naslovom "Terra incognita" medkulturni dialog poteka na ravni leksike v okviru lastnih imen, kar bralca prisili k iskanju njene pomenske denotacije v drugih evropskih območjih. To ni prevod, ki slovensko izrazi po poljsko, kot je Paul Ricoer posrečeno opredelil prevod, ki naj bi bil popoln po obliki, še bolj pa po funkciji. To pomeni, da s strukturo in izraznostjo poljskega jezika ne vstopamo v dialog s slovensko kulturo in njeno miselnostjo. Ne lede na nedvomno prevajalkino intuicijo, njene jezikovne, logične in v znatni meri tudi pragmatičnologične zmožnosti, miselni dialog med kulturama v prevodu ni prišel do izraza. Poleg tega je prevajalka uporabila izvirni naslov avtorjeve knjižne zbirke esejev in z nim naslovila drugo vsebino. Tovrstna zloraba zaupanja avtorja in bralca do prevajalca spreminja podobo prevedenega dela, ki ni isto kot izvirnik. Zaradi avtorjeve nadarjenosti, prevajalkine prizadevnosti in optimalnega časovnega razpona med izidom izvirnika in prevoda, se sodobna slovenska esejistika v zavesti poljskega bralca povezuje predvsem z Dragom Jančarjem, čeprav je mestoma prikazan v pretirani podobnosti z Adamom Michnikom, Dubravko Ugrešić ali Ivanom Čolovićem.
In the translation of the essays of Drago Jančar entitled "Terra incognita", an intercultural dialogue has been undertaken on the level of lexis within the scope of proper names, making a reader search for the denotements in other regions of Europe. It is not a translation that would speak Slovene in Polish, as Paul Ricoeur accurately defined a translation that would be perfect in shape and more in function. It means that we do not commune with the Slovene culture and with its mentality through the structure and the expression of the Polish language. Despite the undoubted translational intuition of the translator, her language, logical competences and, to a large extent, pragmatically-logical competences, a mental dialogue did not take place between the cultures. Moreover, the translator has used the original title of the book, presenting some other contents of that book. Such abuse of the author’s and receiver’s confidence that is put in a translator changes the view of the rendered text that does not resemble the original. The talent of the author, the effort of the translator and the optimal time of appearing of the translation of the essays caused that the contemporary Slovene essay writing reminds a Polish reader of Jančar, although sometimes of Adam Michnik in a perspective that would make him too alike, of Dubravka Ugešić or of Ivan Čolović.
