Autor zwraca uwagę na debatę, jaka odbyła się w Polsce z okazji wydania antologii w opracowaniu Jana Tomkowskiego, Polski esej literacki (Wrocław 2017). Przy okazji zgłasza propozycje ewentualnych uzupełnień kolejnej edycji antologii o ważne odmiany eseju: metapoetycki, etnograficzny, filozoficzny. Teksty zgromadzone w dwu kolejnych numerach „Autobiografii” z 2018 roku redaktorzy traktują jako wkład pisma w myślenie o polskim eseju.
The author draws attention to a debate which happened in Poland on an occasion of releasing an anthology Polski esej literacki (Wroclaw 2017) by Jan Tomkowski. Along the way, he also proposes supplement of a next edition by some important subgenres of essay: metapoetic, etnographic, philosophical. The texts gathered in two next issues of “Autobiography” from 2018 are treated by the authors as the journal’s input into thinking about Polish essay.

This article presents and confronts two views concerning the link between modernity and romanticism. On the one hand, the view proposed by the Nobel Prize winner, the Mexican Octavio Paz in his book Los hijos del limo. Del romanticismo a la vanguardia, and, on the other hand, the one put forward by the prolific Spanish writer Rafael Argullol in his El Héroe y el Único. El espíritu trágico del romanticismo. While for O. Paz the romantic movement as a child of modernity has inspired partially the modern search for the new in itself, for R. Argullol the romantic spirit is expression above all of a tragic-heroic mood of dissatisfaction with modernity. Both writers see the paradoxical nature of romanticism –sometimes longing for the past, sometimes dreaming about the future– as a complex expression of modernity’s self-awareness and self-criticism.

The article concerns a critical book by Stefan Chwin and Stanisław Rosiek, titled Bez autorytetu, which is treated as an example of the process of a certain turn in the Polish modern literature of the end of the 20th century. The author discusses the basic assumptions of critical concepts and indicates the questionable places of the problem structure emerging from those assumptions. In so doing, he treats Bez autorytetu as a form of a modern essay which developed in the conditions of mature modernism, which was reflected in the various attempts at transcending modernistic conditions, both formal and conceptual.

Pedagogical essay is a paper written by students, with diversified exercise values, which helps them master hermeneutic and writing competencies, while being a tool for the academic teacher to learn more about the students and to evaluate the quality of one’s own curriculum and classes. The expectations regarding the potential of the essay, however, can go much further. Essay offers a real breakthrough in teaching as a process. The objective of the study is to show possible relations between essay and pedagogy, as well as multiple functions essay can have in academic teaching.
Esej pedagogiczny to praca pisemna studentów o zróżnicowanych walorach ćwiczebnych, umożliwiająca doskonalenie kompetencji hermeneutycznych i pisarskich autorów, a ponadto – stanowi narzędzie w rękach nauczyciela akademickiego pozwalające poznać studenta lepiej oraz dokonać ewaluacji i oceny jakości własnych programów i ćwiczeń. Oczekiwania wobec potencjału eseju mogą być znacznie większe, dzięki jego walorom można dokonać przemiany w samej dydaktyce. Celem opracowania jest ukazanie możliwych związków eseju z pedagogiką oraz jego wielorakich funkcji w dydaktyce akademickiej.

The article discusses several “curiosities of American spirit” on the basis of the volume of essays A View of San Francisco Bay: the duality of Americans (based on hesitation between success and despair), nihilism noticed especially among the representatives of the younger generation, arrangement of spatial hierarchy, tearing America into two hostile camps (pure, noble minds and simple people’s minds), arrogance of one’s own “I” (being the fundamental cause of great achievements in technology and science), dissonance between biblical spirit and technological progress etc. Besides their cognitive value, Miłosz’s essays are also a great lesson of imagology on America perceived by the comparatist’s eyes.

Artykuł omawia problematykę wykorzystania struktur mitycznych w esejachpodróżniczych Piotra Wajla (1949–2009). Tezą artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że Wajl używatych struktur świadomie. Opowieść mityczna stanowi w jego pisarstwie podróżniczymformę konceptu eseistycznego, za pomocą którego autor próbuje objaśnić różnorodnezjawiska kulturowe. Struktury mityczne w narracji Wajla analizowane są na przykładzieczterech cech opowieści mitycznej: związku narracji z rytuałem, kreacji czasu w esejachna podobieństwo czasu mitycznego, wykorzystania przez autora w opisach figury modeluoraz wyposażenia bohaterów bądź miejsc w określony atrybut. The article attempts to outline the problem of exile in essays of Predrag Matvejević, a remarkable Croatian intellectualist, defining himself as Yugoslav. Starting with a short presentation of his nonconformist views on political and social issues and review of constantly returning charges against the essayist, the article focuses on tracking main features of his writing about political emigration. The paper discusses the condition of writer in exile and the consequences of being between exile and asylum. The conclusion is statement that only cultural identity offers asylum.

This article discusses the special kind of Holocaust essay which, on the one hand, remains in opposition to academic texts and, on the other, is a text which resembles an autobiography, and which reveals its author’s personal engagement in the discussed problem. By analysing Jan Tomasz Gross’ study titled Ten jest z ojczyzny mojej..., ale go nie lubię and its consecutive printed versions, the author of this article discusses the benefit of engaging in essay-writing for the scholar, who fluctuates between the academic and non-academic discourses. To this end, she also discusses other Polish Holocaust essays published in the mid-1980s (by, e.g., Jan Błoński and Roman Zimand) and the theory of the essay by Theodor W. Adorno, which triggered Gross’ formal and notional search.

At first sight it appears that Miłosz’s poetry shares many features with modernist and post-modernist poetics. One of its main themes is the impossibility of verifying the veracity of man’s sensual impressions (i.e. their referring to an ‘external’ world), which seems to un-dermine the traditional concept of literature as ‘mimesis’. However, Miłosz expressly reject-ed the postmodernist point of view that literature as ‘mimesis’ is merely a textual effect. Even when the speakers in his poems expressly deny the possibility of recreating the exter-nal world of man’s sense-impressions by means of language, they seem to achieve the very thing they wanted to deny. One of Miłosz’s favourite devices in the poetry of his middle period was the so-called ‘irony of self-betrayal’. But this negative way of affirming the cove-nant between the self and the world did not satisfy him in the long run. Wishing to over-come the antinomies of mimesis he attempted to work out a poetical strategy allowing him to describe the astonishing richness of being more directly. This strategy required a meta-physical justification. The veracity of man’s sensual and intellectual involvement with the world turned out to be rooted in the religious perspective of ‘apokatastasis’. ‘Time past’ and ‘time present’ are one in a process that both redeems and transcends time, without annihilat-ing the moments of which it consists. Miłosz’s long poems of the sixties and seventies should therefore not be simply understood as ‘literature’ or independent ‘works of art’ (poésie pure) that could be separated from other forms of being. In fact they are part of a process of redemption that occurs ‘here and now’, although it remains unclear when it will be completed. For that reason Miłosz’s longer poems should be read as ‘open texts’ or – but in a sense opposite to the postmodernist idea of ‘unfinishedness’ – ‘work in progress’. They purport to present the manifold phenomena of a man’s existential autobiography simultaneously.

„This cross represents us all“. Liberty and solidarity in Natalia Ginzburg's essays In 1988, in the pages of the left-wing daily „L'Unità”, the writer Natalia Ginzburg, an atheist of Jewish origin, involved on the side of the Italian left, speaks in defense of the presence of the crosses in classrooms. In an essay entitled Non togliete questa croce: è il segno del dolore umano, she refers to the supra-religious and supra-ideological meaning of this symbol. It reminds that it is the Christian revolution that humanity owes to the ideas of equality and solidarity, previously absent. Ginzburg recalls a catalog of values, such as tolerance and generosity, which consists in leaving another human being freedom in searching for answers to fundamental questions. What were the reasons why the writer decided to intervene in the matter of the cross? How does the defense of the Christian symbol in public space fit in with the intellectual project that she has been consistently developing since her literary debut? The article aims at answering these two fundamental questions. Moreover, it ofers a Polish translation of one of the famous texts by Ginzburg, whose excellent essays remain practically unknown in Poland.
W 1988 roku na łamach lewicowego dziennika „L’Unità” pisarka Natalia Ginzburg, ateistka żydowskiego pochodzenia, zaangażowana po stronie włoskiej lewicy, zabiera głos w obronie krzyża zawieszonego w szkolnych klasach. W eseju zatytułowanym Non togliete questa croce: è il segno del dolore umano (Nie zdejmujecie tego krzyża: jest symbolem ludzkiego cierpienia) odnosi się do ponadreligijnego i ponadideologicznego znaczenia tego symbolu. Przypomina, że to właśnie rewolucji chrześcijańskiej ludzkość zawdzięcza idee równości i solidarności, wcześniej nieobecne. Przywołuje katalog wartości, takich jak między innymi tolerancja i szczodrość polegająca na pozostawieniu drugiemu człowiekowi wolności w poszukiwaniach odpowiedzi na fundamentalne pytania. Jakie przesłanki zadecydowały o tym, że pisarka postanowiła interweniować w sprawie krzyża? W jaki sposób obrona chrześcijańskiego symbolu w publicznej przestrzeni wpisuje się w intelektualny projekt, który konsekwentnie rozwijała od momentu literackiego debiutu? Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na te dwa zasadnicze pytania. Ponadto proponuje polskie tłumaczenie jednego ze słynnych tekstów Ginzburg, której doskonała eseistyka pozostaje w Polsce praktycznie nieznana

The starting point for the discussion presented in the article is the question whether it is possible and reasonable to distinguish the non-anthropocentric essay. The author refers to the latest genological findings, indicates why the assumed descriptive categories make it difficult to recognise that genre, and then formulates a range of counter-arguments (with a particular focus on subjectivity) and defines certain requirements for the non-anthropocentric essay. The later part of the article is devoted to the work of Michał Cichy as an example of a non-representative embodiment of that form. His essays, related to the concepts by Tim Ingold and Tadeusz Sławek, are examined from the angle of the practice of intertwining the open world, which abolishes the hitherto dominating position of the human subject and creates space for non-anthropocentric expression.
