Argumentation skills play a vital role in students’ ability to master the learning process because, by employing these skills, they can explain real-world phenomena scientifically. This research focused on developing an argumentation tool based on the engineering design process (EDP) to improve students’ argumentation skills in science classrooms. This study utilised the research methods outlined by Plomp & Nieveen, which include problem identification, design, and implementation stages. This study, which involved 150 junior high school student participants, was conducted to implement the argumentation tool as a learning material to help students to understand heat transfer information in science learning. The indicators of argumentation skills included claims, evidence, and reasoning. The study results showed that five experts validated the argumentation tool in science learning development as appropriate for implementation as a practical tool in the science learning classroom. Furthermore, students’ argumentation skills improved significantly, mainly related to developing claims and collecting evidence based on the N-gain evaluation.

A paradox of our time is identified: on the one hand – the development of one global system (ecological, technological and social), on the other hand – the still increasing “balkanization” of science. The dynamics of this systems is a source of well-known numerous global problems. Its possibly effective solution needs adequate knowledge about the system. For this reason, counteraction to “balkanization” of science is of great practical importance. And this counteraction should comprise not only development of “transboundary” sciences (such as biochemistry or social psychology) but also establishing and developing links between very distant disciplines. This text is intended as a contribution to linking social and engineering sciences. The notion of design plays the central role in this text. Its meaning in the engineering sciences. The notion of utopia has been chosen as a partial counterpart to the term of engineering design. This notion was defined using a concept of possible world – taken from modal logic. It encompasses two ideas: this of design and that of prediction, It is claimed that we need many utopias and that their plurality is of fundamental importance for protecting us against the threats of utopianism. The paper suggests that social utopias can play a heuristic role in engineering design (particularly in the initial phase of defining technological problems), and – on the other hand – that the theory of engineering design can be supportive for, badly needed, development of methodology of utopias creation.

Opis:
The preservation of historical documents is a task that requires a multidisciplinary team. Mechanical engineering can make valuable contributions. Historical documents made of paper have unique characteristics that must be considered for their preservation and exhibition. Specially designed encasements have emerged as a solution to meet these requirements. In the present research, a comparative design study was carried out. The study comprises identifying the main functions of the encasements. Subsequently, it is analyzed how the capsules that appear in the literature have solved these functions. With the information obtained, three new encasements were designed for historical documents in Mexico. From the results and design experiences, some insights and design principles were obtained; these can be universally applied.

This study looks into aspects of the new EU design legislation that relate to the subject-matter of digital designs and the extent to which Polish law should adapt for full harmonization. The first part examines the new open-ended definitions of a ‘design’ and ‘product’ with a focus on dematerialized items that exist solely through appearance. The second part touches upon several legal parameters serving the identification of the object of design protection. It discusses the visibility requirement embedded by the filing requirements, the eye-perception of design features, and the disconnection of the scope of protection from the designated product category. The last part takes an interdisciplinary approach based on the rules of psychology and design engineering in order to explain the issues that underline human vision, with a focus on the appearance of user interfaces. The understanding of sensory and cognitive determinants of human perception is a useful guide for a judge or examiner in the assessment of the overall impression of two designs. Because of the challenges resulting from the specificity of digital designs, this article argues that Polish law should comprehensively implement the new EU design provisions in order to prevent further difficulties in enforcement.

Opis:
This article is aimed at the engineering design of a manipulator, which is pneumatically controlled. It will serve for mounting the compressor of an air suspension system to the chassis of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced in the Slovak Republic. The manipulator will be used on an assembly line, on which SUVs are assembled. The designed device belongs to a group of dedicated devices, which are not produced within a serial production, however, it is the only functional prototype. Together with the manipulator structure, a pneumatic part of the assembly line including individual components, schemes and the pneumatic system will be proposed. Within the project process, all necessary customer demands, technical and safety standards have to be met. Moreover, ergonomic requirements for handling the device and other acts on the workplace have to be considered.

Artykuł, w świetle standardu ISO/IEC 15408 Common Criteria, przedstawia przegląd zagadnień związanych z konstruowaniem i oceną zabezpieczeń wbudowywanych w dowolne produkty lub systemy informatyczne. Ocena ta dotyczy uzasadnionego zaufania do zabezpieczeń, utożsamianego potocznie z ich wiarygodnością. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu w tematykę związaną ze standardem, skrótowo opisano kilkuetapowy i dość sformalizowany proces konstruowania zabezpieczeń. W jego wyniku powstaje dokument zwany zadaniem zabezpieczeń, który specyfikuje zbiór funkcji zabezpieczających wbudowywanych w produkt lub system informatyczny. Ponadto precyzowany jest poziom uzasadnionego zaufania, utożsamiany z rygoryzmem, z jakim implementowane są te funkcje. Ciężar opracowania materiału dowodowego potwierdzającego zadeklarowany poziom uzasadnionego zaufania spoczywa głównie na konstruktorach i osobach odpowiedzialnych za procesy wytwarzania i utrzymania. Materiał wraz z produktem lub systemem informatycznym poddawany jest niezależnej ocenie według metodyki związanej ze standardem. Pozytywny i dodatkowo zweryfikowany wynik tej oceny pozwala na uzyskanie certyfikatu na spełnienie wymagań deklarowanego poziomu uzasadnionego zaufania. Produkty certyfikowane, dzięki tej niezależnej i wnikliwej ocenie, są uznawane za bardziej wiarygodne, więc mogą być używane do odpowiedzialnych zastosowań.
The paper presents a review of the issues relating to design engineering and assessment of the protections to be built into any products or informatics systems, regarding the standard: ISO/IEC 15408 Common Criteria. The assessment has been applied to the reasonable confidence in the protections, which is usually identified with the reliability of the protections. After a short introduction has been made to the subject matter related to the standard, there has been described in brief a few-stage and quite formalized process of design of the protections resulted in a document called a task of protections, which specifies a set of protective functions to be built into a product or an informatics system. Furthermore there has become specified a level of a reasonable confidence, which has been identified with a rigorism with which the functions have been implemented. The elaboration of an evidentiary material to confirm the declared level of the reasonable confidence is to be made exclusively by designers and the persons responsible for manufacturing and maintenance processes. That material including a product or an informatics system is to be evaluated by the methodology process related to the standard. The positive and additionally verified result of that evaluation allows a certificate of meeting the requirements of the declared level of the reasonable confidence to be issued. Thanks that independent and penetrating evaluation, the certified products are recognized as more reliable and may be used for responsible applications.

W artykule przeprowadzono ocenę oprogramowania wykorzystywanego do nauki projektowania złożonych i wielkogabarytowych konstrukcji cienkościennych. Większość oferowanych środowisk graficznych umożliwia zamodelowanie struktury przestrzennej obiektu i przeprowadzenie badań symulacyjnych obejmujących np.: analizę wytrzymałościową i statyczną, obliczenia drgań własnych i wymuszonych. Moduł obliczeniowy w tego typu programach bazuje na metodzie elementów skończonych. W pracy zamieszczono przykładową ścieżkę projektową i analizę pokładu okrętu typu RO-RO, na którym zaparkował samochód ciężarowy. W przedstawionym przykładzie wykorzystano oprogramowanie firmy MSC z preprocesorem Patran i modułem obliczeniowym Nastran.
In the paper the software to the teaching of designing of complex and large-scale thin-walled structures was evaluated by the authors. The bundle of MSC software, named Patran-Nastran, was presented. The software is based on Finite Element Method. The authors, during the teaching process, focus on basic analyses: linear static strength analysis, normal mode (eigenvectors) analysis and frequency response analysis (forced vibrations calculations). An example of RO-RO ship's deck analysis was presented. The deck was loaded with the wheels of truck. A short description of the modeling process as well as the results of the analyses are presented in the paper. Discussion about objectives of the teaching process was carried out. In the authors' opinion, knowledge of that very specialized software is important not only for a calculating engineer. All mechanical engineers should have basic knowledge about the calculations process because they will be recipients of the calculations performed during structure designing. Thin-walled structures are very useful for teaching because during the structure modeling we have to choose types of FEM elements. Stiffeners may be modeled by 1-D elements (with offset) and the plates should be modeled by 2D elements. Differences between beam and rod 1D elements as well as shell, plate and membrane 2D elements should be stressed during the teaching process.

There are many design problems need to be optimized in various fields of engineering, and most of them belong to the NP-hard problem. The meta-heuristic algorithm is one kind of optimization method and provides an effective way to solve the NP-hard problem. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that mimics and mathematically models the behavior of slap swarm in nature. However, similar to most of the meta-heuristic algorithms, the traditional SSA has some shortcomings, such as entrapment in local optima. In this paper, the three main strategies are adopted to strengthen the basic SSA, including chaos theory, sine-cosine mechanism and the principle of quantum computation. Therefore, the SSA variant is proposed in this research, namely SCQ-SSA. The representative benchmark functions are employed to test the performances of the algorithms. The SCQ-SSA are compared with the seven algorithms in high-dimensional functions (1000 dimensions), seven SSA variants and six advanced variants on benchmark functions, the experiment reveals that the SCQ-SSA enhances resulting precision and alleviates local optimal problems. Besides, the SCQ-SSA is applied to resolve three classical engineering problems: tubular column design problem, tension/compression spring design problem and pressure vessel design problem. The design results indicate that these engineering problems are optimized with high accuracy and superiority by the improved SSA. Helicopter pad located on the ship significantly increase the operational capabilities of military and civilian ships. During the storm, especially side tilts of the ship hinder or even prevent the safe use of the helicopter pad. It is proposed to apply the system placed between the deck of the ship and landing site plate, driven by three independent linear drives located under the deck. The task of the system will be preventing from transferring to Helicopter pad the tilt of the ship around the longitudinal axis and the displacement of the deck along the transverse and vertical axis within the limits of the work area. The mechanism consists of the three movable pillars with the plate on top, which is the movable helicopter pad platform. As the linear actuators, plates moving along a horizontal guide were used, powered by system of steel cables with three independent electric motors. In folded state the mechanism, take up appropriately little space in the deck area. For the assumed extreme amplitudes of the ship motion, minimum dimensions of the mechanism links that meets the requirement to work in one configuration and lack of collisions were determined. Kinematic relationships were created indicate which mechanical quantities should be measured in real time to determine the momentary drives speed. For the adopted assumptions simulation was performed, confirming the predicted behaviour of the system. Based on the dynamics equations of system, drives loads, their power and individual links and joints load were determined.

The paper presents a novel methodology of building industrial Virtual Reality applications with use of a knowledge-based approach. Virtual Reality is becoming more and more widespread in engineering applications. However, most solutions are immediate and not flexible, especially in maintenance. Traditional way of programming VR applications makes all the knowledge about a product or a process hard-coded, effectively losing access to it from the outside of the programming software. Besides, making new solutions without any methodology whatsoever makes the process longer and less effective. The author proposes to use general rules of available Knowledge Engineering methodologies in order to make the process of building VR applications more effective and to ensure their flexibility and access to stored knowledge, even after an application is deployed. The presented methodology is supported with practical case studies.

Helipad located on ships greatly increases their ability to perform tactical and logistical abilities. They allow performing reconnaissance from the air, transportation of cargos and people to and from the ship. Landing on a moving ship particularly small size during bad weather is not a safe manoeuvre. Article provides an overview of existing solutions that improve safety during the landing manoeuvre of the helicopter to the ship and describes an innovative mechanism with can stabilize helicopter pad in four degrees of freedom. This solution is characterized in that the landing plate is movable and actuated simultaneously by two support plates and two levers. Plates and levers are driven by separate linear motors that move along the guides connected to the base. The main feature of the mechanism is that when the base is not stable, it can reduce the linear movement of the landing platform in the vertical and transverse direction and angular displacement around an axis perpendicular and parallel to the axis of the ship. A preferred feature of the mechanism is that in folded position it occupies relatively little space. In addition, advantageous attribute of the mechanism is its large working area, enabling the reduction of high amplitude vibration. The article contains a calculation of the kinematics for the proposed structure of the mechanism. It also includes speed drives waveforms, which are the result of simulations for the input parameters of the ship movement.

The digitalisation in the ship design sector is currently applied to the design process itself and is well defined, partially standardised and practically implemented by both independent design companies and the design departments of shipyards. The situation is similar in other sectors of engineering. However, the requirements for the digitalisation of other processes in design and engineering companies have not previously been studied, and the limited financial resources of ship design companies mean that there is a need for research on the digitalisation needs of multidisciplinary ship design companies. The implementation of building information modelling (BIM) solutions is costly for design companies and generates benefits mainly for shipyards and shipowners. The lack of benefits for design companies leads to the hesitation of managers whenever digitalisation is considered; the scope and scale of the digitalisation, as well as the selected software and BIM level, are defined by the shipyard requirements. The participation and support of management in the digitalisation process is one of the key success factors; the expected benefits caused by digitalisation for the organisation will increase the motivation of managers to invest limited resources in digitalisation. There are no data that indicate the processes with a high potential for digitalisation and the scale of expected improvements in ship design companies; therefore, research in this area was performed with a group of project managers from design and engineering companies. The research focused on collecting the opinions and experiences of the managers related to the manual management of resources and comparing the poll results with the conclusions from the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system data analyses. The paper analyses if the digital automation of the resource management process can lead to the substantial improvement of the operations of multi-project, multidisciplinary engineering ship design companies.

Opis:
Computational time needed for reliability analysis of realistic structural problems as a rule is very high. Improvements in efficiency are critical to allow solution of large realistic problems. The reliability analysis is usually performed using approximate First Order Reliability Method (FORM). Iterative solution procedures of FORM require extensive design sensitivity computations of high accuracy. The design of realistic structures requires computer-based numerical procedures, such as finite e,ement analysis. The design sensitivity gradients are not explicitly available in terms of design variables. The most intensive computational task of design sensitivity computation should be carried out by highly efficient and accurate methods such as discrete design sensitivity analysis. This paper describes requirements for design sensitivity information for reliability analysis. The way of coupling reliability computation with discrete AVM and DDM methods of design sensitivity analysis is pointed out. A computational program developed for layered concrete shells allows one to solve large realistic reliability problems. The reliability study of an RC nuclear containment shell is carried out. Reliability studies show which of the parameters have the highest impact on the reliability of the vessel.
Analiza niezawodności dużych konstrukcji wymaga zazwyczaj bardzo długich obliczeń komputerowych. Poprawa efektywności algorytmów jest zazwyczaj warunkiem koniecznym uzyskania rozwiązań dla dużych rzeczywistych problemów. Analizę niezawodności zwykle przeprowadza się stosując przybliżoną metodę analizy niezawodności pierwszego rzędu (FORM). Procedury iteracyjne analizy niezawodności pierwszego rzędu (FORM) wymagają obliczenia gradientów wrażliwości o wysokiej dokładności. Projektowanie konstrukcji wymaga stosowania metod numerycznych takich jak metoda elementów skończonych. Gradienty wrażliwości nie są jawnie zależne od zmiennych projektowych. Obliczenia gradientów wrażliwości powinno być realizowane przy zastosowaniu efektywnych, dyskretnych metod analizy wrażliwości. W artykule przedstawiono sposób połączenia analizy niezawodności z dyskretnymi metodami obliczania gradientów wrażliwości - zmiennej sprzężonej (AVM) i różniczkowania bezpośredniego (DDM). Rozwinięty program komputerowy dla żelbetowych powłok warstwowych pozwala na rozwiązywanie dużych zadań niezawodnościowych. Przedstawiona została analiza niezawodności żelbetowego budynku bezpieczeństwa reaktora nuklearnego. Analiza niezawodności pozwala na stwierdzenie, który z parametrów projektowych ma największy wpływ na niezawodność osłony.
