Opis:
The problem of using alternative fueling sources for combustion engines has been growing in importance recently. This is connected not only with the dwindling oil resources, but also with the growing concern for the natural environment and the fight against global warming. This paper proposes the concept for a zero-dimensional model of a multi-fuel engine, enabling the determination of thermodynamic system parameters based on the basic geometric and material object data (complete model). The basic problems in the creation of this model and the modeling of the accompanying subprocesses have been outlined and the methodology of the numerical solution of the obtained mathematical description has been proposed. The basic characteristics of the developed model are: the application of an original model of liquid fraction injection based on normal distribution, a new Assanis correlation for computing the diesel fuel self-ignition delay period in the presence of gas, first-order chemical reaction kinetic equations for describing the course of combustion for combustible components of the gas/air mixture, the implementation of a self-consistency procedure in modeling heat exchange and the effect of exhaust recirculation, the inclusion of both a single liquid fuel injection and the possibility of performing computations for a divided charge.
W niniejszej pracy zaproponowano koncepcję zero-wymiarowego modelu silnika wielopaliwowego, umożliwiającego, wyznaczenie parametrów termodynamicznych układu w oparciu o podstawowe dane geometryczne i materiałowe obiektu (model kompletny). Nakreślono podstawowe problemy w zagadnieniu tworzenia takiego modelu i modelowania podprocesów towarzyszących oraz zaproponowano metodykę numerycznego rozwiązywania uzyskanego opisu matematycznego. Podstawowe wyróżniki opracowanego modelu to: zastosowanie autorskiego modelu procesu wtrysku frakcji ciekłej opartego na rozkładzie normalnym, nowej korelacji Assanisa do obliczenia okresu zwłoki samozapłonu oleju napędowego w obecności gazu, jednostopniowych równań kinetyki reakcji chemicznej do opisu przebiegu spalania składników palnych mieszaniny gaz-powietrze, implementacja procedury samouzgodnienia w modelowaniu procesu wymiany ciepła i wpływu recyrkulacji spalin, uwzględnienie zarówno pojedynczego wtrysku paliwa ciekłego jak i możliwość prowadzenia obliczeń dla dawki dzielonej.

Opis:
This article presents the problem of the knock combustion in a dual fuel compression engine, in which additional fuel besides diesel oil was compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG was injected into the engine intake system and mixed with air supplying the engine. In this paper described the reasons of knock combustion, which occur with more intensity with the increase of methane content in engine fuel. The phenomenon of knock combustion in the dual fuel engine is difficult to eliminate, often impossible to avoid, and it forms a barrier limiting increase of methane share in the fuel. Also, this article contains the results of engine indicating and discussion on changes in the indicating diagrams caused by knock combustion. Carried out tests included engine indicating and numerical calculation of indicator diagrams with using spectral analysis and filtering cylinder pressure signals with high-pass filters. As a result of this calculation, several parameters describing intensity of knock combustion were determined. They allow to tell taking into account only cylinder pressure analysis if there is knock combustion inside engine combustion chamber or not. Knocking is an undesirable type of combustion in the engine, leading to excessive thermal and mechanical loading of the engine parts, causing premature wear of them. For this reason, this type of combustion should be eliminated from the engine operation and researchers of combustion processes must be provided with tools to detect and determine this kind of combustion.

By defining the fluid's thermodynamic properties, the cycle can be simplified using various assumptions. A lot of models of the combustion engine process were developed that including the thermodynamics, turbulence, and chemical kinetics to predict thermodynamic parameters of the engines. Mathematical model the working process occurring in the cylinder of the four-stroke piston-combustion engine is an object of the paper. The following assumptions consisting in that thermodynamics system is an open thermodynamical system, in accepted model were taken into account. Generalised mathematical model of the working process in the cylinder of the piston-four-stroke combustion engine was worked out. Dependences describing instantaneous volume of the working charge in the cylinder, equation of the balance of the of the working charge quantity in the cylinder and state equation of the working charge in the cylinder were considered at formulating of assumptions. Values of coefficients for each component processes of working cycle with taking into consideration of the dependence concerning the compression process , the combustion process, and expansion process after finishing of the combustion process were an object of worked out mathematical model. For nonstationary processes formulating working cycle of the engine realized during openings of valves (the open system), the quantity and composition of the working charge in the cylinder, its specific heat and temperature are variable. The temperature difference between the working charge and walls temperature of borderering the space of the cylinder was taken into account, too. Generalized mathematical model of the working process in the cylinder of the piston- four-stroke combustion engine applying for the theoretical analysis of the working process in the combustion engine, as well as for working out of experimental results was elaborated.

Some results of visualization researches of combustion system with divided, semi - open combustion chamber for SI engines, using rapid compression machine (RPM) and experimental visualization engine (EVE) are presented in his paper. Short description of combustion system operation, description of test stands and research equipment can be found in the paper. The tests were performed at stoichiometric ratio natural gas-air and propane-air mixtures. A few the most characteristic of results are shown; to explain how should be operate the combustion system, to yield the better performance. They are compared the research results (photographs of combustion sequence, diagrams of in-cylinder pressure histories) during visualization testing with using RCM and EVE. During RCM testing we obtained the combustion photographs in the plain pass in cylinder axis but during ECE testing at the plain perpendicular to the cylinder axis. All researches shown that the best performance are yielded when a spark advance angle (ignition timing) is such selected that stream outflow prechamber to main combustion chamber starts when the piston is at TDC and it has adequate energy to travel a main combustion chamber with higher velocity than burning velocity in quiescent chamber. Then the shortest time of combustion, the highest peak pressure in the cycle and bigger useful working are yielded. The impact of spark advance angle on flame propagation process into combustion chamber in extreme cases has been analyzed too.

Opis:
Modern solutions used in compression-ignition internal combustion engines are quite similar to each other. The use of high-pressure, direct fuel injection results in high combustion rates with controlled exhaust emissions. One of the combustion system quality criteria is to obtain adequately high thermodynamic indicators of the combustion process, which are obtained through, among others, the right combustion chamber geometry. Its shape influences the fuel atomization process, turbulence of fuel dose, evaporation and the combustion process. Optimizing the combustion chamber shape is one of the decisive factors proving the correct execution of the combustion process. This article presents the methodology of choosing the combustion chamber shape (changes of three selected combustion chamber dimensions) by using the optimization methods. Generating multidimensional data while maintaining the correlation structure was performed by using the Latin hypercube method. Chamber optimization was carried out by using the Nelder-Mead method. The combustion chamber shape was optimized for three engine load values (determined by the average indicated pressure) at selected engine operating conditions. The presented method of engine combustion chamber optimization can be used in low and high speed diesel propulsion engines (especially in maritime transport applications).

This paper outlines the methods and results of computations completed using the ANSYS Fluent code modelling the fuel injection and combustion within the K6 engine, a new form of rotary engine in which the fuel is injected in an arc across the top of the cylinder. The model uses the DPM Model in conjunction with a dynamic mesh and non-premixed combustion models to treat the injection as liquid diesel evaporating to C12H23. The outcomes of this model are presented in images displaying the distribution of temperature, and fuel and CO2 concentrations. The limitations pertaining to the maximum injection angles are also studied. The simulation is found to be effective and the results suggestive of successful, clean and complete combustion while presenting some matters, which require further investigation. The article presents temperature within the combustion chamber at various crank angle degrees, ) velocity of fluid within the combustion chamber, effects of impingement with injector offset on temperature and fuel concentration, fuel concentration demonstrating impingement, in cylinder temperature curve.

This paper presents and discusses selected research results of the diesel engine fuelled with blends of: diesel oil (DO), synthetic ethanol (ET) as oxygenated additive and small quantity of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) used as emulsifier. Content of ethanol in diesel oil was changed in wide range (up to 50%). Addition of 5% by vol. Of FAME was constant for each tested mixture. Preliminary tests were focused on influence of fuels blends composition on its combustion process. The main analyzed parameter was mean indicated pressure and its unrepeatability index. Research suggests that diesel oil blended with up to 20% of ethanol can be successfully used for diesel engines feeding. Higher ethanol content in mixture with diesel oil is unfavourable because misfire phenomenon occurs immediately. In this case tested engine works unstable with extremely high toxic gases emission. Some physical properties of tested fuels, measurement system configuration, Values of mean indicated pressure vs. cycle number for AD3.152 engine fuelled with: pure diesel oil, ETIO, ET20, ET30, ET 40, ET50, Variations of unrepeatability index of mean indicated pressure in relationship to kind of tested fuels are presented In the paper. Research shows that tested engine is not possible to operate with using above 40% of ethanol content in diesel oil, as the fuel simply will not ignite.

The combustion system with semi open combustion chamber (SOCC) was originally elaborated in Aircraft Engine Department of Warsaw University of Technology. In this system the original combustion chamber of the standard SI engine, was divided by partition in prechamber and main combustion chamber, but yet this division exists only when the piston is close to TDC, on the contrary by the rest of the cycle the chambers are fully open. The system operation mechanism, the visualization research results, the high speed changed of the pressure measurements, was presented in this paper. The influence on the system performances of the different combustion systems parameters: the prechamber volume, the nozzle hole diameter in the partition, the ignition place, the compression ratio, and the ignition advance angle (IAA), on the basis of the research results, using rapid compression machine was presented in this paper. All research results show, that the best results of the system operation can be obtained if the stream outflow from prechamber to main combustion chamber starts when the piston is at TDC, and if the stream energy will be so big to displace all main combustion chamber before the clearance between partition and piston crown was opened. If the system operated correctly, the combustion time shortening, the growth of the maximum cycle pressure, and the combustion efficiency increase were obtained.

Fuel mixture formation inside a cylinder has become used more frequently in spark ignition engines in recent years. gas internal combustion engines can also benefit from this concept as direct injection into an engine 's cylinder during the compression stroke not only increases its volumetric efficiency but also eliminates adverse anomalies in the combustion process. This paper focuses on the development of a simulation model for a spark ignition engine with direct hydrogen injection into a cylinder. The Wave software was used for the simulation. A part of the paper depicts the model's verification. The study utilized a three-cylinder internal combustion engine with the total cylinder volume of 1.2 dm3. The concept of the engine is based on new, high-pressure injectors with 10 MPa inlet pressure (gas-hydrogen injection directly into the engine cylinder). Utilization of internal fuel mixture formation can be beneficial due to its enabling the control of the combustion process and gaseous emission generation. From the viewpoint of the engine's design, however, internal fuel mixture utilisation is more complicated as injectors have to be built into the cylinder head. The actual engine construction is housed in laboratories of the Technical University of Liberec, Department of Vehicles and Engines.

The some problems concern of the new combustion system operation with semi open combustion chamber, which can be used in spark ignitions internal combustion engines are presented in this paper. These considerations are based on the visualization research results, with using rapid compression machine (RCM). In this researched combustion system the original combustion chamber was divided by partition in prechamber and main combustion chamber. This division of the original combustion chamber exists only when the piston is close to TDC, for the rest of the cycle the chambers arefully open. Ignition is initiated in the prechamber using electric spark plug, but the mixture in main combustion chamber is ignited by the stream of the burned gases injected from prechamber through the orifice in partition, if the ignition advance angle is correct. If the ignition advance angle is incorrect the mixture from prechamber will be outflowing through the orifice in partition and through the slot which is created between the partition and piston crowns. This last stream is swirled on the partition edge, what causes decrease of the stream speed outflowed from the orifice in partition to main combustion chamber. If the ignition advance angle is too big, then a peak pressure and compression work is very big because the burned gases are compressed instead of the fresh air/fuel mixture. This causes that the effective work is small and combustion efficiency is small.

The work provides a proposal of interpretation showing operation in terms of values being compared to a physical quantity with the unit of measure called joule-second, just like operations of Hamilton and Maupertius demonstrated in classical mechanics. Operation in this interpretation is also considered in quantum mechanics, referring to body electromagnetic radiation source of which operation is characterized by Planck constant. An original method of analysis and evaluation of machine operation is herein presented in the energetic aspect, as the result of applying the theory of semi-Markov processes. In order to give grounds for usability of such interpreted operation it has been employed the model describing changes in energy of combustion engines, in the form of state-discrete and time-continuous semi-Markov process. The process is thus a semi-Markov model of getting worse combustion engine operation run with the lapse of time and regaining the initial energetic state of the engine after its refurbishment. The limiting distribution of the process has been determined with probabilities of occurring the distinguished energetic states of mentioned engines. The paper shows that the proposed interpretation for the operation enables making a graph of operation, which demonstrates engine operation in the form of field. The attention is paid that the engine operation in the presented version has got the advantage that can be expressed as a quantity with the joule-second as a unit of measure and as a graph in the form of operation field. The coordinate system for presenting the operation as a field, proposed in this paper, refers to the known in thermodynamics possibility of expressing the energy conversion sorts like work and heat (according to the conception of Clapeyron and Belpaire) in the form of fields.

The article presents a method for evaluating the operation of internal combustion engines used as the main engines in the propulsion systems of sea-going ships in various operating conditions. This method enables calculating the engine operation value based on the theory of semi-Markov processes and mathematical statistics. What is noteworthy, the operation of the examined internal combustion engines is compared to a physical quantity which is expressed in the form of a number with the measure unit called joule-second. a model having the form of a semi-Markov process is proposed to describe the energy state changes taking place in the main engines during their operation. Also proposed is the use of the point and interval estimation at a given confidence level â for determining the value of the energy converted in the engine during its operation for the known and unknown standard energy deviation treated as the random variable. The semi-Markov model of changes of the energy converted in the engine during its operation is presented in a general form. The above model was used for determining the ship’s main engine operation, which is in the examined case a function of the energy converted in particular energy states, the expected value of the time of duration of these states and the probability of their existence. These probabilities compose the limiting distribution of the semi-Markov process, the values of which are the specified main engine energy states.

Opis:
The article analyses the operation of reciprocal internal combustion engines, with marine engines used as an example. The analysis takes into account types of energy conversion in the work spaces (cylinders) of these engines, loads of their crankshaft-piston assemblies, and types of fuel combustion which can take place in these spaces during engine operation. It is highlighted that the analysed time-dependent loads of marine internal combustion engine crankshaftpiston assemblies are random processes. It is also indicated that the wear of elements of those assemblies resulting from their load should also be considered a random process. A hypothesis is formulated which explains random nature of load and the absence of the theoretically expected detonation combustion in engines supplied with such fuels as Diesel Oil, Marine Diesel Oil, and Heavy Fuel Oil. A model is proposed for fuel combustion in an arbitrary work space of a marine Diesel engine, which has the form of a stochastic four-state process, discrete in states and continuous in time. The model is based on the theory of semi-Markov processes.

Opis:
This article presents the results of investigations focused on the role of molecularly ordered structures (molecular clusters) on combustion process. The proposed new mechanism of the reactions initiation takes into account the role of molecular clusters in energy (heat and energy of electrons emitted by the surface of the walls of combustion chamber) conductivity regulation. Literature survey shows that molecular clusters created by aromatic hydrocarbons are responsible for particulate matter. The combustion process itself is not uniform in whole combustion chamber. Such diversity, caused mainly by heterogeneous thermal state of combustion chamber is recognized as significant reason to create various products of combustion including carbon oxides, carbon dioxides and nitrogen oxides. Jet fuel and its blends with n-butanol and biobutanol in concentration from 10 to 75 % (V/V) were subjected to laboratory tests. Such blends were also tested on the test rig with a miniature turbojet engine – MiniJETRig. Engine operating parameters and carbon oxide emission were measured. The relations between electrical conductivity and parameters of engine test (e.g. temperature in selected points in combustion chamber) were assessed. Engine tests were carried out according to specific profile of engine test, which models different engine operating modes. The results of experimental investigations, shown in the article, initially confirm the proposed mechanism of the oxidation reactions initiation during combustion process.

Opis:
Wankel engines were very attractive in automotive sector almost forty years ago because of small dimensions, compactness, simple design, smoothness of engine work and lack of vibration caused by inertia forces. The disadvantage of such engine was very high pollution, especially of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and high fuel consumption. These disadvantages can be eliminated by applying of direct injection of hydrogen and in the aviation sector by applying of fuel with high octane number also at a direct injection system. The main objective of the work is modelling of the thermodynamic process taking place during the scavenge process in such engine. At assumed geometry of the engine, initial and boundary conditions the change of engine parameters such as pressure, temperature, density, heat exchange and volume are calculated on the base of zero-dimensional model as a function of rotation angle of the piston. Forming of the mixture during fuel injection process in compression process gives information about the air excess ratio. The presented model is applicable for different sort of fuels. This work is introduction to a broader analysis of the processes in spatial system. Application of hydrogen reduces of toxic components emission from such engine, but decreases also engine power.

This paper presents a proposal of simultaneous consideration of load and wear associated with it , of tribological systems of ship main engines (intended for ship propulsion) . Based on results of investigations it was assumed that both the load Q (i.e. a cause of wear ) and the wear Z (i.e. an effect of load occurrence) considered in a given time t (0 ≤ t ≤ tn) are random variables Qt and Zt ,respectively. There was characterized operational principle of ship main engines in definite external conditions (WZ) as well as consequences of excessive load of engines. Three hypotheses highlighting relations existing between load and wear of the above mentioned systems, have been proposed. The first of them deals with explanation of stochastic relation between load and wear, the second highlights why it is possible to assume that the load Qt and the wear Zt are positively correlated , and the third – why it is possible to assume that coefficient of correlation between Qt and Zt may be taken close to one.

The article presents results of research on noise emission from AD3.152 diesel engine powered by blends of diesel fuel (DF) and ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE). Measurements were executed in steady-state conditions for different engine partial loads, crankshaft rotational speeds and angles of fuel injection start. The research shows that engine noise emission increases for all tested ETBE/diesel blends in comparison to pure diesel fuel. The highest values of noise emission were recorded for ETBE40. Preliminary analysis of the combustion process suggests that noise emissions increase in line with the value of in-cylinder pressure.

Opis:
The struggle against global warming necessitates the search for new sources of energy, which limit the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Among various fuels used to supply energy nowadays, the importance of natural gas is constantly growing. This is caused by the fact that this fuel is characterised by the lowest share of coal among all fossil fuels. Because of its properties, natural gas can be used directly to power spark-ignition engines. The use of this fuel for compression-ignition engines on the other hand is limited due to the high autoignition temperature of methane. Currently, research is being conducted in numerous centres on the possibility of using fuel gases to power CI engines operating in a dual-fuel system. The present article discusses the impact of the share of CNG in the supply dose on the operation of a CI engine. An engine with the Common Rail injection system programmed for mono-fuel operation was used in the research. Based on the conducted tests it has been proved that supplying this type of engine with fuel gas considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which is caused by the fact that the gas and air mixture present in the combustion chamber starts burning now of the autoignition of the first portion of liquid fuel. The obtained test results confirm the necessity to change the injection parameters of the pilot dose of diesel fuel (the timing angle of injection and the pressure of fuel) in cases when this type of engine operates in a dual-fuel system.

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę wyodrębnienia z dwustrefowego modelu procesu spalania w silnikach samochodowych liczb kryterialnych podobieństwa, wykorzystując zarówno metodę równań różniczkowych, jak i metodę analizy wymiarowej. Liczby te mogłyby, według zasad teorii podobieństwa, uprościć procedury badawcze.
The most important thermodynamic process taking place in the engine is the combustion process. The study of this process is possible by using complex mathematical models and very costly laboratory test results. This study attempts to isolate similarity criterion numbers in the-zone combustion model of car engines using both the method of differential equations and the method of dimensional analysis. These numbers could, according to the principles of similarity theory simplify the testing procedure.

The article presents the three-state semi-Markov model of the process {W(t): t > 0} of state transitions of a ship power plant machine, with the following interpretation of these states: s1 – state of full serviceability, s2 – state of partial serviceability, and s3 – state of unserviceability. These states are precisely defined for the ship main engine (ME). A hypothesis is proposed which explains the possibility of application of this model to examine models of real state transitions of ship power plant machines. Empirical data concerning ME were used for calculating limiting probabilities for the process {W(t): t > 0}. The applicability of these probabilities in decision making with the assistance of the Bayesian statistical theory is demonstrated. The probabilities were calculated using a procedure included in the computational software MATHEMATICA, taking into consideration the fact that the random variables representing state transition times of the process {W(t): t > 0} have gamma distributions. The usefulness of the Bayesian statistical theory in operational decision-making concerning ship power plants is shown using a decision dendrite which maps ME states and consequences of particular decisions, thus making it possible to choose between the following two decisions: d1 – first perform a relevant preventive service of the engine to restore its state and then perform the commissioned task within the time limit determined by the customer, and d2 – omit the preventive service and start performing the commissioned task.

The paper investigates the demonstration of the increase in total efficiency of a GDI engine in dependence on the parameters of mixture formation and the range of load at determined states of engine work in dependence on the rotational speed of the engine. By use of the newest simulation programme KIVA 3V, the possibilities of up-to-date methods of calculation of changes of temperatures, pressures, and the formation of toxic components during the process of stratified charge combustion were presented. The elaborate mathematical models, used in calculations, describing the processes occurring inside the cylinder of the engine, permit one to create complicated virtual models reflecting the real conditions in a satisfactory way. The correctness of calculation results is determined by the quality of input data, which can be obtained based on model investigations. In the experimental section, investigations on a test bed with use of specialist apparatus for visualisations of inside cylinder processes were discussed. By use of visualisation, observation was performed of the run of the fuel jet from the moment of injection, consequent by rebounding of the fuel from the piston head, on to reaching under the gap between the electrodes of the ignition plug and flame spreading from the moment of ignition till the end of the combustion process. For the determination of the total efficiency of a Gasoline Direct Injection engine, test bed investigations were carried out with the aim of determining the speed and load characteristics of the investigated engine. On this basis, the total efficiency of a GDI engine can be determined.
Zakres pracy obejmuje wykazanie zwiększenia sprawności ogólnej silnika GDI w zależności od parametrów tworzenia mieszanki i zakresu obciążenia w określonych stanach pracy silnika w funkcji prędkości obrotowej silnika. To meet the future stringent emission standards, innovative diesel engine technology, exhaust gas after-treatment, and clean alternative fuels are required. Oxygenated fuels showed tendency to decrease internal combustion engine emissions. In the same time, advanced fuel injection modes can promote further reduction in pollutants at the exhaust without penalty for the combustion efficiency. One of the more interesting solutions is provided by the premixed low temperature combustion (LTC) mechanism jointly to lower-cetane, higher-volatility fuels. In this paper, to understand the role played by these factors on soot formation, cycle resolved visualization, UV-visible optical imaging were applied in an optically accessed high swirl multi-jets compression ignition engine. Combustion tests were carried out using two fuels: commercial diesel and a blend of diesel with n-butanol. The fuels were tested at 70MPa injection pressure and different timings. At late injection timing coupled to high EGR rate (50%), the blends increased the ignition delay allowing operating in partially premixed LTC (PPLTC) regime in which the fuel is completely injected before the start of combustion. Strong reduction in engine out emissions of smoke and NOx were obtained with a little penalty on engine efficiency. This limitation was overcome operating at earlier injection timing in which a mixing controlled combustion (MCC) LTC regime was realized. In this regime, a good compromise between low engine out emissions and efficiency was achieved.

The tests were carried out using a CNG burner (with an excess air ratio of λ = 1) and four spark plugs. As a result of the ionization signal research, the following relationships were obtained: regarding the impact of the sensor position on the amount of generated voltage (the smaller the distance the greater the value of the signal), the effect of temperature on the sensor resistance (non-linear relationship: increase in temperature decreases resistance, with R2 = 0.9997) effect of system voltage on the ionization signal (linear relationship: voltage increase increases the ionization current signal with a determination coefficient of R2 = 0.9803). In addition, it was found that using an iridium electrode candle had the best effects on the ionization current, regardless of the electrode’s geometrical parameters.

Opis:
In this work, a methodology to diagnose ten diesel bus engines is carried out by means of some characteristics of the starting system performance. The signals of battery voltage, electric current supplied to the starter motor and crankshaft revolutions during cold and warm engine starting processes are analysed. Characteristics and patterns of the signals that are attributable to engine compression and combustion failures are pointed out, which are related to the kilometres travelled by each vehicle after the last engine repair and the shutdown time of the engine in warm condition. It is obtained that the rise of the current required by the starter motor during the second and third compression process, and the mean crankshaft angular acceleration after the second compression process are characteristics that are related to the engine condition.

The theoretical reasons of creation the reactive rotation disc engine on cascade pressure exchanger base (ERR CEP) have been stated. The particularities of ERR CEP working process in collation with wave disc engine on wave pressure exchanger base have been considered. It is in particular shown that cascade pressure exchange principles use allows vastly to increase the pressure of preliminary compression of charge and also to reduce the loss of expanding products of combustion in useful work turning moment of engine.

Opis:
In earlier designs, the compression-ignition engine units were controlled by means of mechanical elements. They were levers, rods, springs, pawls, cams and others. The quality of such control did not ensure the required repeatability of control parameters in the fuel injection and combustion process. After the introduction of the standards limiting engine emissions of the limited exhaust components, the aforementioned engine control systems were not able to meet the requirements. The mechanical regulation of mechanical systems has been replaced by electronic control systems. It was the development of computer techniques and software that enabled design solutions of control systems for injection and combustion process parameters in engines with sufficient accuracy and repeatability of test results. The modern EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) control system, due to the computing power of microprocessors increased in recent years, enables meeting high requirements of modern Common Rail injection systems. The article presents issues in the area of four thematic levels: the design and modernization of the engine, its operation, diagnostic problems in order to determine reasons of unit failures and bench-top methods for assessing the effectiveness of unit repairs as well as issues concerning alternative fuels.

Opis:
The article discusses damages of essential tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of large power two-stroke engines used as main engines, which take place during transport tasks performed by those ships. Difficulties are named which make preventing those damages impossible, despite the fact that the technical state of engines of this type is identified with the aid of complex diagnostic systems making use of advanced computer technology. It is demonstrated that one of causes of the damages is the lack of research activities oriented on recognising random properties of the loads leading to those damages. A proposal is made for the loads acting at a given time ton tribological associations in crankshaft and piston systems of internal combustion engines used as main engines to be considered as random variables Qt. At the same time the loads examined within a given time interval tr ≤ t ≤ tz would be considered stochastic processes {Q(t): t ≥ 0}. Essential properties of the loads of the abovementioned tribological associations are named and explained by formulating hypotheses which need empirical verification. Interval estimation is proposed for estimating the expected value E(Qt) of the load Qt acting at time t. A relation is indicated between the mechanical load and the thermal load acting on tribological associations in the ship main engine crankshaft and piston system. A suggestion is formulated that a stochastic form of the relation between these types of load is to be searched for, rather than statistic relation, and a proposal is made to measure the intensity (strength) of the stochastic relation using the Czuprow’s convergence coefficient.

The development of combustion systems construction is associated with the possibility of increasing the thermal or overall efficiency of an internal combustion engine. The combustion systems currently in use (mainly related to direct fuel injection) are increasingly being replaced by hybrid systems, including direct and indirect injection. Another alternative is the use of prechambers in new combustion systems. This article concerns the thermodynamic aspect of this issue – namely, the assessment of the inter-chamber f low of a marine engine equipped with a prechamber combustion spark ignition system. The research was carried out using mainly one-dimensional simulation apparatus, and detailed analyses were presented using three-dimensional modeling. The tests included the engine model at medium load. Differences in mass f lows were shown at different diameters and different numbers of holes from the preliminary chamber (while maintaining the same cross-sectional area). Similar values of excess air coefficient during ignition of the fuel dose in the prechamber were observed, which resulted in changes in the f low between the prechamber and the main chamber. The differences in mass f low affected the temperatures achieved in the individual combustion chambers. Based on three-dimensional analyses, the mass transfer rate between the chambers and the temperature distribution were assessed during fuel ignition initiated in the prechamber.

Frequent crew rotation, a shorthand, and various levels of technical crew skills, are the facts with the ship-owners has to cope very often. Having the proper level of engine exploitation as a main objective is necessary to implement a constant engine monitoring system, in order to obtain quick and reliable diagnostic information. One cannot omit the financial aspect of monitoring system implementation, created by its price and costs of service. In this paper, the analysis of diagnostic utility of the signal deriving from a propulsion shaft fluctuation during its one revolution is presented. The angular speed of the shaft was measured using a laser sensor of torque meter ETNP-10. Diagnostic utility validation has been verified on a basis of combustion quality, in cylinders of two-stroke, turbocharged Marine Diesel Engine. Test was carried out on board of a container vessel during its sea passage. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the method, the crew simulated engine’s malfunction by fuel injection cut-off in various cylinders (only one in the same time). The interference signals decomposition was carried out using the method of synchronous averaging and moving approximation with polynomial of 3rd exponent.

Opis:
The summary of the investigation performed with a new combustion system with divided semi-open combustion chambers for SI engines while using rapid compression machine (RCM) is presented in this paper. Division of the combustion chamber with partition to the prechamber and the main combustion chamber exists only when the piston is close to the TDC, for the rest of the cycle the chambers are fully open. Variable parameters of the combustion system during the tests were: ratio of the prechamber volume to the sum of the prechamber and main combustion chamber volumes, diameter of the orifice in the partition, point of the ignition and ignition advance angle (ignition timing). Constant parametr es were: RCM speed — 1800 rpm, and stoichometric mixture of air to natural gas- it contained 96% ofmethane. research results show that the ignition advance angle, which ensures the optimal results, has to be adjusted for each configuration of the RCM design parameters. The influence of prechamber volume, orifice diameter, point of ingnition and ignition advance angle on combustion process in the combustion chamber was analysed. If the prechamber volume is too small the energy of the stream is small and the stream has a small range. Its energy is too small to travel through all the main combustion chamber with the speed greater than the combustion speed. The partition orifice diameter influences on the time from the start of the ignition to the beginning of the stream outflow.from prechamber to the main combustion chamber and the stream energy. The biggest influence on stream formation process has the placement of the ignition and the best results are obtained when the ignition occured on the prechamber wall. The high speed Schilieren photographs of the combustion process of the most characteristic cases and of the travel of the flame front curves are shown in this paper. The research results show the direction of the trade - off investigation of commercial SI engine for a wide range of engine speed and loads.
Zmiennymi parametrami konstrukcyjnymi były: stosunek objętości komory wstępnej do całkowitej objętości komory spalania, średnica otworu w przegrodzie łączącego komorę wstępną z komorą zasadniczą, miejsce zapłonu.

The present paper relates to the problem of the effect of compression ratio of a dual-fuel compression ignition engine fuelled with natural gas (CNG) on selected combustion process parameters. In the course of investigation, there were registered pressure values in the combustion chamber versus crankshaft angle for various compression ratios. The obtained characteristics enabled to determine such combustion process parameters as: maximum pressure Pmax, mean rate of pressure rise (∆p/∆α)śr, maximum rate of pressure rise (dp/dα)max, versus torque M, as well as fuel burnout ratio x versus crankshaft angle α. Analysis of the results indicates strong relationship between the above mentioned parameters and the compression ratio ε of a dual-fuel engine.

The use of these fuels in compression-ignition (CI) engines is difficult due to their relatively high autoignition temperature. One solution for using these fuels in CI engines is operating in a dualfuel mode, where the air and gas mixture is ignited with a liquid fuel dose. In this method, a series of relatively complex chemical processes occur in the engine's combustion chamber, related to the combustion of individual fuel fractions that interact with one another. Analysis of combustion of specific fuels in this type of fuel injection to the engine is difficult due to the fact that combustion of both fuel fractions takes place simultaneously. Simulation experiments can be used to analyse the impact of diesel fuel combustion on gaseous fuel combustion. In this paper, we discuss the results of simulation tests of combustion, based on the proprietary multiphase model of a dual-fuel engine. The results obtained from the simulation allow for analysis of the combustion process of individual fuels separately, which expands the knowledge obtained from experimental tests on the engine.

Opis:
The phenomena accompanying the self-ignition period have been the subject of extensive research in this area. They are usually carried out in constant volume pressure chambers or in reactors with constant air flow. Such tests are considered to be basic. The conditions in these tests are definitely different from those in compression ignition engines. Therefore, the comparison of the auto-ignition delay periods from test setups to those obtained from real engines raises a number of doubts. Because the self-ignition delay period determines the combustion process, a theoretical analysis was conducted, pertaining to a number of factors that have an impact on this process which determines the operational aspects of the engine, and thus its economics and ecology. The research object was a single-cylinder engine from AVL LIST GmbH in Graz, Austria. The engine is equipped with a Common Rail injection system. The test setup meets the following standards: Directive 1999/96/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 13th December 1999, Regulation (EC) No 715/2007 of the European Parliament and the Council of 20th June 2007, as well as Commission Regulation (EC) No 692 /2008 of 18th July 2008. The analysis of the operational aspects of the self-ignition delay period was based on the results of tests on the AVL 5402 engine fueled with hydrocarbon fuels: diesel and synthetic oil. The engine was also fed with vegetable fuel – rapeseed oil. The obtained material from the tests warns the user of CI engines against the effects of their failure if the engine control parameters and the quality of fuel for its supply are not maintained as recommended by the manufacturers. The material contained in the publication is used for scientific analysis, and, which is worth emphasizing, is of a utilitarian nature.
