Opis:
The development of applications for wireless sensor networks is a challenging task. For this reason, several testbed platforms have been created. They simplify the manageability of nodes by offering easy ways of programming and debugging sensor nodes. These platforms, sometimes composed of dozens of sensors, provide a convenient way for carrying out research on medium access control and data exchange between nodes. In this article, we propose the extension of the WSN testbed, which could be used for evaluating and testing the functionality of sensor networks applications by emulating a real-world environment.

Opis:
Modelling is a technique that can be used in the development and sizing of networks. It involves building a mathematical representation of a physical system and is often computer based, allowing system behaviour to be investigated based on the variation of key parameters. This pa- per will describe some applicable tools for network modelling and consider a range of applications. Whilst modelling and simulation tools are used extensively to design and size ICT solutions, each tool tends to be targeted at a specific range of applications and a specific user community. It is shown that different tools expect different levels of expertise from their user communities. The benefits of using such tools are described, as are some of their limitations. Modelling and simulation provide a cheaper and faster approach to trying new ideas than building prototypes or test networks. They provide a valuable guide to designing networks and can predict operational outcomes.

It this paper, a neural network was utilized in order to create an emulator, which could mimic the behaviour and nonlinear dynamics of a gyroscope with two axes of freedom, subjected to both low- and high-frequency excitation. For this purpose, several known learning methods, such as the gradient and Levenberg-Margquardt method, were used. Three different models of neural networks were considered and compared for their effectiveness: NNFIR, NNARX and the recurrent network NNARMAX.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono, w jaki sposób przy użyciu sztucznej sieci neuronowej możliwe jest stworzenie emulatora, który naśladuje zachowanie i nieliniową dynamikę giroskopu o dwóch osiach swobodnych, poddanego wymuszeniom zarówno o niskiej, jak i wysokiej częstotliwości. W celu nauczenia sieci neuronowej, wykorzystano szereg dostępnych algorytmów uczących (m.in. gradientowy, Levenberga-Margquadta). Przetestowano oraz porównano trzy różniące się od siebie modele sieci neuronowych: NNFIR, NNARX oraz sieć rekurencyjną NNARMAX.

The paper describes the concept and the design process of a software-defined computer built for didactic purposes and as a proof-of-concept. The computer uses a classic microprocessor from the 1980s with all of its other components – memory, I/O, supplementary glue logic and a hardware bus monitor implemented with a contemporary mainstream microcontroller with Cortex-M family core. The concept of a software-defined computer was successfully implemented with four significantly different microprocessors. The computer may be used for illustrating the operation of a processor and for teaching the basics of low-level programming. It is also capable of running CP/M operating system. Its operation is controlled at both hardware and software level from a PC via two instances of a terminal emulator software.

Efektywne wykorzystanie źródeł energii odnawialnej jest zagadnieniem coraz częściej poruszanym, z uwagi na rosnące wymagania stawiane przez użytkowników, głównie pod kątem czasu zwrotu inwestycji oraz niezawodności komponentów wchodzących w skład systemu. W tym celu należy maksymalizować sprawność układów przekształtnikowych oraz dostosować do pracy z dynamicznie zmieniającymi się parametrami sieci elektroenergetycznej (np. poprzez stosowanie złożonych algorytmów sterowania wektorowego). Takie działania prowadzą do efektywnego przekształcania energii elektrycznej oraz bezpiecznej pracy nawet podczas silnych zakłóceń pochodzących od sieci elektroenergetycznej. W artykule autor skupia się na niezwykle istotnym elemencie systemu przekształtnikowego jakim jest algorytm synchronizacji falownika z siecią (PLL). Przedstawione zostaną wyniki badań algorytmu PLL symulowanego w środowisku Matlab/Simulink oraz zostanie dokonane porównanie wyników symulacyjnych z wynikami uzyskanymi podczas badania rzeczywistego przekształtnika współpracującego z modelem sieci. Atrakcyjność przedstawianego artykułu podnosi zastosowanie autorskiego emulatora sieci elektroenergetycznej.
The effective usage of the renewable energy is the topic that nowadays is more and more frequently discussed due to the fact that the demands made by the users concerning the payback period and the reliability of the components parts are constantly increasing. To achieve this, it is advisable to maximally increase the effectiveness of the converting systems and adjust them to the operation with the dynamically variable parameters of the power grid (i.e. by the application of the complex algorithms of vector steering). Such solutions lead to the effective conversion of the energy and the safe operation even during strong interference coming from the power grid. In the article, the author focuses on the important element of the converting system which is the synchronizing algorithm of the converter with the network (PLL). The article provides the results of the research conducted on the PLL algorithm simulated in the Matlab/Simulink software. Moreover, it outlines the comparison between the simulation results and the results obtained during the research on the real converter cooperating with the network model. The attractiveness of the presented article is increased by the application of the authorial emulator of the power grid.

The paper resumes the most important questions as regards the stylistic problems of the five selected Biblical Renaissance paraphrases of the psalms In Te, Domine, speravi by Eobanus Hessus, George Buchanan and Klemens Janicki. All the three poets transformed psalms into classical genres: into elegies (Hessus and Janicki) and odes (Buchanan), thereby imitating the most prominent representatives of those poetic genres, i.e. Ovid and Horace. As a result, completely different works were written. Buchanan's odes are characterized by a simple style, they are condensed, without unduly accumulation of rhetorical figures and this is what made them, in a sense, similar to the Biblical paradigm. Now, conversely, Horace's elegies contain long sentences and constructed with ornaments, with numerous ornaments, such as solemn apostrophes, epithets, and comparisons. Thus they are deprived of such a desirable simplicity and spontaneity in expressing feelings, things that are so important in the case of prayers. In the context of the paraphrases of those authors, Janicki's psalm looks very positive, which in fact is not a strict counterpart of one of the two biblical psalms In Te, Domine, speravi, but actually a free poetic interpretation. One observes here broader images than in the original, with a considerable number of metaphors, images and symbols drawn from many different psalms. Parallel phrases as a means of expression played in Janicki an important role as well. They allowed to divide the long sentences woven into elegiac distich into smaller rhythmic units and compose them in respect of the mood of the prayer. Despite a large accumulation of rhetorical means, the work does not smite us with artificial elaboration. On the contrary, it surprises us with its very individual approach, colorfulness, and its vivid prayerful confession. This is something that, undoubtedly, was lacking in Hessus's and Buchanan's paraphrases, which were uniform in terms of their composition and style.

W 2020 roku powstała w Katowicach Instytucja Kultury Panteon Górnośląski. Jej statutowym celem jest upamiętnianie, zachowanie i upowszechnianie dziedzictwa poprzez czczenie pamięci osób zasłużonych dla polskości ziem Górnego Śląska, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem twórców, artystów, naukowców, polityków, żołnierzy oraz osób duchownych. Realizując tak zdefiniowaną funkcję, w 2022 roku w podziemiach katedry pod wezwaniem Chrystusa Króla w Katowicach instytucja ta otwarła dla zwiedzających wystawę: „Panteon Górnośląski”. Ma ona charakter formacyjno-wychowawczy; ukazuje dokonania wybitnych, XX-wiecznych mieszkańców Górnego Śląska. Biografie tych osób mają służyć za wzorce osobowościowe, które w procesie naśladownictwa staną się użyteczne dla zwiedzających, zwłaszcza dla młodego pokolenia. Spośród promowanych na wystawie cech na pierwsze miejsce wysuwa się transgresja (transgression). Zgodnie z psychologiczną koncepcją Józefa Kozieleckiego jest to pokonywanie własnych ograniczeń, wyjście poza przypisaną sobie rolę społeczną. Autorzy wystawy, powołując się na przykłady zasłużonych Górnoślązaków, starają się udowodnić, że choć to trudne, jest możliwe i powinno być wyzwaniem dla każdego młodego człowieka zastanawiającego się nad swoją przyszłością.
The institution of the Upper Silesian Pantheon was established in Katowice in 2020. Its statutory purpose is to commemorate, preserve and disseminate cultural heritage by commemorating personages who have left their mark on the Polish identity of the Upper Silesia region, with special focus on artists, scientists, politicians, soldiers, and the clergy. In 2022, in fulfilment of its cultural mission, the Pantheon opened a public exhibition in the vaults of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice, “Upper Silesian Pantheon”. Its goal is formative and educational and it exhibits the achievements of prominent 20th-century residents of Upper Silesia. The biographies of these figures are intended to serve as role models, useful to visitors, especially the young, in the process of emulation. Transgression ranks topmost among the features promoted by the exhibition. According to the psychological concept of Józef Kozielecki, transgression consists in overcoming one’s own limitations and going beyond the assigned social role. The authors of the exhibition, referring to the examples of distinguished Upper Silesians, seek to prove that, although difficult, transgression of this type is possible and should challenge every young person to thinking about his or her future.

This paper presents a new uniform framework for solving the problem of minimum variance control of both discrete-time and continuous-time linear time-invariant multi-input multi-output systems described by general input-output models. Rather surprisingly, it is shown that the continuous-time case can be analyzed and synthesized without the necessity of involving the celebrated (and rather complex) theory of output predictor emulation, so that quite similar, simple solution is obtained like for the well-known discrete-time case.

This paper is dedicated to the subject of measuring QoS in the Video Telephony over IP (VToIP) service. QoS measurement models in general and then models designed specifically for measuring QoS in the VToIP service are presented. A new numerical tool for examining the quality of VToIP video streams VToIP is described. The tool’s functionality is then put to the test in a number of analysis scenarios. The results and insights gained from the analyses are then presented in several diagrams, and interpreted. The paper concludes with a summary and an outlook on further areas of work.

The present work is the beginning of a discussion that again addresses the question of Jane Addams’ sociological heritage. That latter is defined as a puzzle which may finally have a solution in that all of the pieces now appear to have been collected. The approach taken to recovering Addams’ identity as a sociologist involves a historico-sociological exploration of the influences upon the formation of her sociological thought, with a focus on Auguste Comte, the Father of Sociology. The article argues that Addams emulated Comte’s scientific mission and took upon herself the task of continuing his project by following another route to the goal. She is thus Comte’s successor, and even rival, insofar as she sought to establish sociology as a science that may be placed in charge of producing knowledge about social life and has the social mission of finding solutions to social problems that politicians proved incapable of tackling. Addams emerges from the discussion as the creator of a sociological paradigm that was dismissed, dismantled, and then lost in the process of the scientific revolution that took place unnoticed after the end of World War I, when the normal period of the scientific development of sociology in America came to an end. The suppression during the 1920s of the type of sociology that Addams developed and adhered to has left sociology in a state of unresolved identity crisis and arrested scientific development.

Celem artykułu recenzyjnego jest przybliżenie i skomentowanie treści zawartych w książce Susan Schneider Świadome Maszyny. Sztuczna Inteligencja i projektowanie umysłów wydanej w 2021 roku. Stosowaną metodą badawczą jest analiza (wydobycie z tekstu terminów i definicji oraz ich rekonstrukcja) oraz porównanie (zestawienie pojęć stosowanych przez autorkę z pojęciami używanymi w innych tekstach). Wnioski podkreślają aktualność problematyki podejmowanej przez autorkę oraz trafność jej zalecenia ostrożności podczas decydowania o modyfi kacji własnego mózgu.
The purpose of this review article is to present and comment on the contents of Susan Schenider’s book Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind. The applied research method is analysis (extracting terms and definitions from the text and reconstructing them) and comparison (cross-referencing the notions used by the author with those used in other works). The conclusions emphasize timeliness of the issues addressed by the author and soundness of her advice for caution when deciding about modifying one’s own brain.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia obrazujące możliwości zastosowania współczesnych technologii wirtualizacyjnych oraz emulacyjnych w procesie kształcenia studentów kierunków informatycznych. W szczególności dotyczy to treści związanych z tematyką usług w sieciach komputerowych. Autorzy wskazują na możliwości realizacji scenariuszy sieciowych, wykorzystu-jących obrazy iso systemów operacyjnych desktopowych i serwerowych w połączeniu z obrazem systemu operacyjnego Cisco IOS. Wykorzystanie platformy wirtualizacyjnej oraz emulacyjnej na zajęciach laboratoryjnych pozwoli studentom, w sposób porównywalny do warunków rzeczywi-stych, dokonywać konfiguracji oraz wdrażania usług sieciowych.
The article presents issues concerning the applicability of virtualization and emulation technologies in the teaching process for IT students. The presented content in particular relates to the subject of computer network services. The authors point to the possibility of simulating selected network scenarios, using iso images of desktop and server operating systems and Cisco IOS operating system image. The use of virtualization and simulation platform will allow in a manner similar to real conditions make the configuration and implementation of network services.

Opis:
This paper presents a microelectronic emulation approach for high-speed power system computation. First, the problems of existing power system simulators are detailed. This shows that microelectronic emulation is a possible solution for solving the speed problems of existing simulators. Second, this paper presents one specific emulation approach, the so-called AC emulation approach. The ultimate objective of the AC emulation approach is the realization of a power system emulator which reproduces simultaneously a large number of phenomena of different time constants or frequencies with a much higher speed than real time. Frequency dependence of the elements is preserved and the signals propagating in the emulated network are the shrunk or downscaled current and voltage waves of the real power network. The models of the power network components are detailed. Special attention is paid to the generator model which was shown to introduce a systematic error. This systematic error is quantified, analyzed and optimized. Moreover behavioral simulation results confirm the feasibility of this approach which in turn lays the foundation for such an emulator.
