    Parliamentary speeches of the second half of XVIIth century are the the place of inner differentiation in a statement’s style. Besides of the formal style there are some orations, which were created in just forming „average” style and looked almost like a colloquial language. Castellan’s of Poznań, Krzysztof Grzymułtowski’s speeches are the excellent base for studies with this differentiation. The speech in the seym in 1662 is the example of „high-level” style, rich in the applications of rhetorical devices. This kind of style had ussually appeared, when matters seemed hard to the speakers, and it was this case.

    The soldiers (Polish and Lithuanian) had deputed their legations to the seym in the March of 1652 to ask for payment of overdue pay. The president of parliamentarians, Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, had given two times the responses to the delegates. These speeches are the example of „high-level” style, rich in the applications of rhetorical devices, which provided for dishonest persuassion. This high artistry had served for making the empty promises to soldiers.

    In 1811, the poetic academy of Toulouse awarded an epistle about hope in medical practice, by Jean-Marie Caillau, a now unknown physician who combined medicine and writing. This article provides contextualizing and close reading. It presents Caillau’s works and reputation, and highlights how he defined himself as a doctor-writer. Then it focuses on the didactic epistle, in which hope is regarded as a moral palliative, or a soothing and comforting illusion that the empathetic clinician prescribes to incurable, moribund and suffering people. The study of the text reveals the significant use of the peritext, the strong connection between medical discourse and poetical devices, and the praise of an eloquent physician at the patient’s bedside. By correlating hope and eloquence, Caillau embodies and promotes the dual figure of the doctorpoet. This article thus explores the fruitful and sometimes challenging interplay between medicine and poetry during the early 19th century.

    Samuel Brzeżewki was a Baroque, nowadays forgotten, preacher. There are three sermons hold as his testimony. First two sermons refer to Marian theme; the last one (dated on 1645) is a funeral homily. Oliwa wdzięcznoozdobnej zieloności przysadzonej […] na kazaniu przy pogrzebie […] Gerzego Pucniewskiego is dedicated to a nobleman, Pucniewski. He came from Minor Poland, Abdank Coat of Arms and remained practically an unknown figure. In order to present Pucniewski as a Christian role model, Brzeżewski used a very popular device, symbolism. He intended to create an unconventional as well as memorable picture for his audience. The author compared (referring to the works by Aristotle and verses from the Bible) the man with an olive tree and a palm tree in order to show him humility and piety. Brzeżewski used this symbolism on purpose. He argued that it is important for an imperfect human mind to portray things using symbols and concepts to understand the meaning. Connecting didacticism and mnemonic, the preacher referred to funeral vocabulary. The number of terms shows similarities between genres. This method was not a novelty in the XVIIth century. However it was not always followed with deep understanding on the literary theory. It was more important to create a visual comparison and analogies. Taking this into account, one may state that Brzeżewskis sermons are fairly conventional, yet show authors eloquence.

    The letters regarding eloquence (written by father Euzebiusz Franciszek Stateczny) were published in 1920 AD. In this book, its author gathered all instructions which had been issued by him earlier in parts. They were given a form of five letters. Father Stateczny stressed that his work is neither a manual of rhetoric or homiletics nor a proper elaboration of the discussed subject.     W 1920 roku została wydana książka o. Euzebiusza Franciszka Statecznego Listy o wymowie. Autor zebrał w niej publikowane wcześniej w częściach wskazania dla mówców ujęte w formę pięciu listów. Zaznaczał, że jego dzieło nie ma charakteru podręcznika retoryki czy homiletyki ani nie jest pełnym opracowaniem zagadnienia. Swoją uwagę koncentruje na przymiotach mówcy oraz cechach jego dzieła. Artykuł niniejszy przybliża sylwetkę autora, prezentuje treść jego dzieła i podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie o aktualność zawartych w nim wskazówek.

    During the first half of the nineteenth century, transformations in the mechanisms of political representation and the need to include new social sectors in the state apparatus led to the establishment of schools to increase the number of educated persons who would be capable of speaking in public and shaping the opinions of their fellow citizens. Teaching rhetoric gained new force in this setting. This article looks at a series of four secondary school handbooks of rhetoric published in Spanish, from the perspective of glottopolitics. The study focuses on the sections in these books about eloquence and looks at (a) how they deal with speaking, the models they provide, the contrasts they establish between ancient and modern, and the genres they deal with, and (b) how they prescribe rules, and observations on the speaker’s education regarding morality and knowledge needed to perform efficiently. The analysis shows that these aspects changed over time and how this relates to the social changes occurring at the time.
