Opis:
This study investigates whether adding a real interlocutor to elicitation techniques would result in requests that are different from those gathered through versions with a hypothetical interlocutor. For this purpose, a written method is chosen. One group of 40 students receive a written discourse completion task (DCT) with two situations that ask respondents to write emails on paper to an imaginary professor. This data is compared to earlier data collected from 27 students, where a group of students composed emails for the same situations and sent them electronically to their professor. Thus, while one group write emails to a hypothetical professor, the other group is provided with a real interlocutor. The data is analyzed for the inclusion of opening and closing moves, density, the level of directness and the choices of moves in the opening and closing sequences, as well as the choices of supportive moves. Results indicate significant differences in (the) level of directness, and the choices of moves in the opening and closing sequences. The other analyses do not show significant differences. The findings reveal that the addition of a real interlocutor does make a difference, albeit not a drastic one. The results have implications for the design of elicitation techniques that aim to simulate real life.

Opis:
Panax quinquefolium L., belonging to the Araliaceae family, along with P. ginseng is one of the well-known species of ginseng. Multidirectional pharmacological action of this plant is attributed to triterpene saponins called ginsenosides. Pharmacopoeial raw material are roots obtained from the field crops which are time-consuming and require expensive agrotechnical procedures. Therefore, the new sources of ginseng biomass are sought such as in vitro suspension cultures. P. quinquefolium L. cell cultures, treated with the elicitation of methyl jasmonate (MJ) in concentration 50 and 250 μmol L-1, synthesize more ginsenosides than control cultures. The highest increase (2.2-fold) of all examined compounds was noted using 250 μmol L-1 MJ. In this condition, the predominantly quantitative metabolite was Rb1 ginsenoside belonging to protopanaxadiol derivatives.

Museums have been closely linked to national identity since the 19th century. Currently, museums have to cope with the ways they present themselves to visitors properly. Therefore, national identity in a museum has become the centre of research attention. Children are a large group of visitors who come into contact with the national narrative in museums. Involving children in the research of the concept of national identity constructed in the museum can bring many interesting findings. However, research with children is difficult. Especially for beginning researchers or museum staff, who do not have in-depth experience with qualitative research. Thus, the aim of the study is to present possible ways of researching national identity with children. Attention will be drawn to the discussion of which variables and which data collection techniques are possible to examine national identity and it’s concept with children.

Opis:
Methyl jasmonate has a strong effect on secondary metabolizm in plants, by stimulating the biosynthesis a number of phenolic compounds and alkaloids. Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) is an important source of biologically active compounds. This research focuses on the detection and quantification of 2-phenylethylamine and its possible metabolites in the cotyledons, hypocotyl and roots of common buckwheat seedlings treated with methyl jasmonate. In cotyledons of buckwheat sprouts, only traces of 2-phenylethylamine were found, while in the hypocotyl and roots its concentration was about 150 and 1000-times higher, respectively. Treatment with methyl jasmonate resulted in a 4-fold increase of the 2-phenylethylamine level in the cotyledons of 7-day buckwheat seedlings, and an 11-fold and 5-fold increase in hypocotyl and roots, respectively. Methyl jasmonate treatment led also to about 4-fold increase of phenylacetic acid content in all examined seedling organs, but did not affect the 2-phenylethanol level in cotyledons, and slightly enhanced in hypocotyl and roots. It has been suggested that 2-phenylethylamine is a substrate for the biosynthesis of phenylacetic acid and 2-phenylethanol, as well as cinnamoyl 2-phenethylamide. In organs of buckwheat seedling treated with methyl jasmonate, higher amounts of aromatic amino acid transaminase mRNA were found. The enzyme can be involved in the synthesis of phenylpyruvic acid, but the presence of this compound could not be confirmed in any of the examined organs of common buckwheat seedling.

Opis:
Managing the exploitation of technical equipment under conditions of uncertainty requires the use of probabilistic prediction models in the form of probability distributions of the lifetime of these objects. The parameters of these distributions are estimated with the use of statistical methods based on historical data about actual realizations of the lifetime of examined objects. However, when completely new solutions are introduced into service, such data are not available and the only possible method for the initial assessment of the expected lifetime of technical objects is expert methods. The aim of the study is to present a method for estimating the probability distribution of the lifetime for new technical facilities based on expert assessments of three parameters characterizing the expected lifetime of these objects. The method is based on a subjective Bayesian approach to the problem of randomness and integrated with models of classical probability theory. Due to its wide application in the field of maintenance of machinery and technical equipment, a Weibull model is proposed, and its possible practical applications are shown. A new method of expert elicitation of probabilities for any continuous random variable is developed. A general procedure for the application of this method is proposed and the individual steps of its implementation are discussed, as well as the mathematical models necessary for the estimation of the parameters of the probability distribution are presented. A practical example of the application of the developed method on specific numerical values is also presented.

Opis:
The uncertain equivalence method (UE) is a newly proposed technique for elicitation of 1-D utilities in the case of monotonic preferences. Previous publications argue that the rationale behind the introduction of this technique is that UE estimates are not influenced by certainty effect, UE elicits points that well describe the curvature of the utility function, which is somewhat closer to the true function than the one of the lottery equivalence method (LE), and there is no increase in the width of the elicited UE uncertainty intervals compared to those of the certainty equivalence method (CE). This paper analyzes these assumptions quantitatively on the basis of empirical data from 104 volunteers who constructed their utility functions over monetary prizes using CE, LE and UE. The data was analyzed with the help of four one-tail statistical tests for paired samples. Results showed that: 1) UE results are not influenced by the certainty effect, unlike CE; 2) the UE utility function is more curved than that of LE, but that might be associated with the better selection of approximation nodes and not with the certainty effect; 3) the length of the UE uncertainty intervals is greater than that of the CE intervals, perhaps because of higher complexity of the method, but the increase is only by 30%.

Opis:
In laboratory experiments, the impact of elicitation with a mixture of sodium silicate and iron chelate or sodium silicate alone on fatty acid composition in sprouts of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) has been examined. Buckwheat seeds and then sprouts were soaked for 0.5 h each day over six days in an aqueous solution of the mentioned elicitors. The sprouts were grown in the light regime of 16/8 h, day/night. After seven days of germination (sprouting), the composition of fatty acids in freeze-dried and powdered sprout tissues was analyzed by gas chromatography. The results showed significant changes in the composition of fatty acids in sprouts in comparison to buckwheat seeds. The results indicate that the germination of buckwheat seeds leads to an increase in myristic (C14:0), palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0) and behenic (C20:0) acid in sprouts, although the use of the elicitors, especially sodium silicate, inhibited this tendency. The sprouts of common buckwheat contained almost twice as much α-linolenic acid (C18:3) as the seeds did, and slightly less linoleic acid (C18:2). Moreover, the use of elicitors favored an increased accumulation of α-C18:3. As a result, germination drastically reduced the C18:2/a-C18:3 ratio by about 4 times, which may have a positive health effect. The buckwheat sprouts contained traces of eicosatrienoic (C20:3), eicosatetraenoic (C20:4), docosaenoic (C22:1) and docosadienoic (C22:2) acids, while their content in the seeds was between 0.6 and 2.4%. The buckwheat sprouts had a higher atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic index (TI) and a lower health index (HI) than seeds did, but the use of elicitors inhibited this tendency.

Knowledge is still considered to be power and its externalization makes it possible for others to use that power. In this paper, we examine the theory of brainstorming, and the claim by father Alex Osborn that in a group session an individual can think of twice as many ideas than working alone. In the context of requirements elicitation, we performed an experiment on a “nominal” and a “real” group of participants, following a procedure based on the Jaccard index. However, the obtained results do not provide evidence to support the above opinion, because during a five-minute session, participants working individually produce over 43% more ideas than a group of different participants.
Do porównania otrzymanych wyników wykorzystano indeks Jaccarda. Otrzymane wyniki jednak stoją w sprzeczności z powyższym stwierdzeniem, pokazując, że o 43% więcej idei wygenerowały pojedynczy uczestnicy badania w porównaniu do ich grup.

The article presents a data analysis and processing for tuning artificial neural network (ANN) of the anthrop technical system reliability, based on the opinions of experts. In general, the system reliability parameters are functions of operands – physical values – like time to failure, time between failures, duration times of specific reliability or operational states, number of failures in a time interval (event frequencies). These values are easier to be determined by an expert – operator with long year experience – than probabilistic model parameters. It is suggested that they be used in elicitation, for example linguistic estimates of the shares of reliability system elements in the system failure frequency. The numerical – linguistic elicitation of these opinions was carried out, which turned out to be uncorrelated and not suitable for tuning the network. Data processing method was used with the appropriate adopted analytic hierarchy process (AHP) geometric scale and matrix approximation method evaluations (logarithmic least squares method). Correlation analyses were performed for received input and output data of network and error of data processing method was determined. The results are shown in the example of elicitation and data correlation analyses for tuning the reliability neural network of the ship propulsion system.

Footwear terminology demonstrates interesting cross-linguistic differences and is, consequently, also a problematic area for non-native speakers. In order to arrive at a more accurate picture of a subset of footwear terminology in present-day Polish, 82 native speakers were asked to name a range of six contemporary women's boot styles. No style showed a complete agreement in the preferred head noun, although a clear trend was evident for each one, with kozaki being the most commonly used overall. The possibly uniquely Polish use of a military metaphor for tall riding-style boots (oficerki) and the special subcultural case of Dr. Martens-style boots are discussed in particular. The choice of modifiers within noun phrases for boots is also examined. Some contrastive data are presented from speakers of Greek and Russian.

Opis:
Since student learning and supervision are viewed as social processes, investigations into doctoral learning need to consider social learning theories and ways to illuminate student relations during this time. For such social research, interviews are the most extensively used instruments to gather data, but the data can be enriched by the use of visuals. This article reports on the value of two modes of graphic elicitation interviews to delve into factors that impacted on the progress of research master’s and doctoral students at one university. The studies were exploratory and the approach was within the framework of participatory visual research methodologies. The first setting involved 11 participants who were particularly successful in the completion of their studies. In accordance with the socio-cultural theory, the students completed a diagram in the form of a relational map, after having completed a table in which they brainstormed the people, artifacts, and processes that contributed most to their success. In the second setting, 10 less diligent students were instructed to complete drawings (timelines) to illustrate their research journeys. These were guided by three questions to ensure that the students focused on the topic. In both instances, the graphics (diagram/drawing) were used to elicit interviews, which were tape recorded. In the second setting, the situated learning theory, the social capital theory, and the self-regulated learning theory were used to analyze the data and identify themes in the narratives. The paper highlights the advantages and limitations of both methods. Both methods facilitated unexpected outcomes. The biggest advantage of drawings was that they were unconstrained by the researcher’s previous knowledge about the topic. Moreover, their greater flexibility allowed participants more freedom of expression and a stronger voice. However, the selection of visuals (such as diagrams, tables, or drawings) should be based on the specific aims of the research.

Eryngium planum L. has been reported as a medicinal plant used in traditional medicine in Europe. The tissue cultures may be an alternative source of the biomass rich in desired bioactive compounds. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the biotechnological techniques on the selected phenolic acids accumulation in the agitated shoot cultures of E. planum. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of those compounds in 50% aqueous - methanolic extracts from the biomass were conducted by applying the HPLC method. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA), yeast extract (YE) and sucrose (Suc) stimulated accumulation of the phenolic acids: rosmarinic (RA), chlorogenic (CGA) and caffeic (CA) in in vitro shoot cultures. Cultivation of shoots in liquid MS media supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 6-benzyladenine and 0.1 mg L-1 indole-3-acetic acid in the presence of 100 µM MeJA for 48h was an optimum condition of elicitation and resulted in approximately 4.5-fold increased content of RA + CGA + CA in plant material compared to the control (19.795 mg g-1 DW, 4.36 mg g-1 DW, respectively). The results provide the first evidence that the selected phenolic acids can be synthesized in elicited shoot cultures of flat sea holly in higher amount than in untreated shoots.
