Introduction: Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte disturbance that occurs within many patients. The more often prevalence of cardiovascular or renal diseases is, the more frequent medical issue hyperkalemia will be. An increasing quantity of entities requires taking medications that affect electrolyte hemostasis. Therefore, reasons for hyperkalemia should be deeply reflected. One of them is pseudohyperkalemia. Purpose: In this study diagnostics and treatment of hypokalemia were presented based on the case report of a 56-year-old man. Case presentation: A 56-year-old man was admitted to the Department of Invasive Cardiology of Medical Hospital of Białystok for complaints of strong chest pain associated with palpitations, cold sweats, feelings of general weakness and anxiety. The patient had no medical history of chronic diseases and neglected to take any medications at length. The laboratory tests performed at admission showed an increased serum concentration of potassium. Through the whole hospitalization, many medications were implicated to overcome hyperkalemia (diuretics, calcium resonium, inhalation with beta2-adrenergic agonists, intravenous infusion of glucose with insulin) with no effect. Hormone test was performed, the results excluded Addison’s or pituitary disease. Differential diagnosis with arterial blood draw showed normal potassium serum concentration. Conclusions: Hyperkalemia is encountered in a broad spectrum of patients. The severely elevated level of potassium could lead to life-threating conditions. Therefore, proper diagnosis making process is a matter of great importance. As clinicians, we need to base not only on laboratory but also examine the whole picture of the patient. Misdiagnosing pseudohyperkalemia might result in unnecessary medical management.

It is well documented that unavoidable ions in a pulp such as Mg2+, Ca2+, and K+ have a significant effect on the interaction for particles, especially for flotation of metallic sulfide minerals and clay minerals. In this study, the effect of electrolytes on the flotation of inherently hydrophobic mineral-graphite was studied. It was found that the zeta potential showed a dramatic decrease, and the reagent adsorption capacity of mineral enhanced in the present of electrolytes. The possible mechanism responsible for improved recovery was investigated by electrokinetic, surface tension and ions adsorption tests. It is likely that the hydrophobic force is stronger than the electrostatic force due to the reduced potential of graphite. This might be in favor of the formation of hydrophobic oil film leading to an increase in the graphite floatability. The experiments provided a new spectacle to study inherently hydrophobic mineral processing with electrolyte solution.

Purpose: Purpose of this work is to analyse the process of synthesis of oxide ceramic coatings in plasma electrolytes on 2024 aluminium alloy and to form an electrolyte which allows to reduce energy consumption for the coating formation. Design/methodology/approach: The oxide ceramic coatings were synthesized on 2024 aluminium alloy. The coatings were formed by the alternate application of anode and cathode pulses to the sample. X-ray diffraction analysis of coatings was performed on a DRON-3.0 X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation. The thickness of the coatings was determined using a CHY TG-05 thickness gauge. The porosity of the coatings was investigated by analysing the micrographs of the plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) coatings obtained on a scanning electron microscope at x500 magnification using the image processing technique. Findings: The electrolyte with 5 g/l H2O2 additive have been elaborated as an optimal composition for synthesis of a coating with an increased content of corundum (a-Al2O3) as compared to a coating synthesized in the same mode in the 3KOH+2Na2SiO3 electrolyte without H2O2. This synthesis mode allows obtaining a coating with a high corundum content at low energy consumption. Research limitations/implications: For further optimization of the synthesis modes, it is necessary to analyse the influence of the phase composition and porosity of the obtained oxide ceramic coatings on their microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Practical implications: Based on the developed modes of synthesis of the coatings, it will be possible to obtain wear and corrosion resistant oxide ceramic coatings with predetermined functional properties and to reduce energy consumption for their formation. Originality/value: Methods for accelerating the formation of coatings have been proposed and tested, in particular, by adding various amounts of hydrogen peroxide to the electrolyte. The content of oxides in the obtained coatings, in particular, their ratios at various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in the electrolyte, were determined by X-ray phase analysis. The modes of synthesis of the coatings were developed which allow obtaining a continuous coating without cracks with simultaneous decreasing porosity from 4.32% to 3.55-3.53%.

Lithium-ion batteries are not situable for electric vehicles with high millage, military power supplies and fixed power networks. Therefore, the Li-S batteries have been intensively investigated, due to the high capacity, low cost, widespread source, and nontoxicity. The development of Li-S batteries causes increasing need to find the methods for their recycling. Some of them are discussed in the paper. The recycling of Li-S cell relates to its anode, cathode, electrolyte, binder and separator. The Li-S battery should be fully charged before recycling. There are potential methods for recycling of lithium from anodes, especially by re-melting. It is also possible to recycle some materials from the cathodes, especially sulfur by re-melting and graphite by dry crushing, Eco-bat Technologies method or the method investigated by Xiang et al. There is no effective recycling methods for electrolytes, binders and separators. It is necessary to carry out further studies on them.

Rapid synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by pulsed electrodeposition was investigated in the non-aqueous electrolyte, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazoliumbis(trifluoro- methanesulfonyl)imide ([EMIM]TFSI) with gold trichloride (AuCl3). To aid the dissolution of AuCl3, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([EMIM]Cl) was used as a supporting electrolyte in [EMIM]TFSI. Cyclicvoltammetry experiments revealed a cathodic reaction corresponding to the reduction of gold at −0.4 V vs. Pt-QRE. To confirmthe electrodeposition process, potentiostatic electrodeposition of gold in the non-aqueous electrolyte was conducted at −0.4 V for 1 h at room temperature. To synthesize AuNPs, pulsed electrodeposition was conducted with controlled duty factor, pulse duration, and overpotential. The composition, particle-size distribution, and morphology of the AuNPs were confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrodeposited AuNPs were uniformly distributed on the platinum electrode surface without any impurities arising from the non-aqueous electrolyte. The size distribution of AuNPs could be also controlled by the electrodeposition conditions.

This paper presents the results of research of hydraulic loss during electrolyte flow through gaps typical for ECM machining. The research was conducted on a test station where inducing an oscillatory movement of electrodes was possible. Appropriately prepared electrodes with curvilinear outlines were placed in a machining unit which allowed for measuring the pressure of the electrolyte flow in eight points on the electrode surface and also interelectrode gap inlet and outlet. Additionally, the results of pressure measurements were compared with results obtained from a computer simulation.

Although Ag-Pt system is crucial for several technological applications, investigations of the thermodynamic properties of this system are limited. In the present study, activity of silver at various temperatures in the platinum rich solid solution was measured by a solid electrochemical method and employing AgI as the solid electrolyte. The EMF was determined using a galvanic cell (–)|Ag|AgI|Ag – Pt alloy|C|Pt (+), which provided novel experimental data on thermodynamic properties of a Ag-Pt alloy. Activity, partial molar of Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy of silver in a solid solution containing 1 at % Ag between 573 and 673 K have been calculated. The results indicated that the activity of silver obtained in the present study shows a large positive deviation from the ideal Raoultian behavior. Microstructures of alloys with different compositions were also compared.

A solution has been constructed of the Debye Huckel equation for system spheres with arbitrary radii and surface charges or potentials in electrolyte solutions. A general theoretical method for description of inter-particle interaction within such systems has been elaborated. The practically important case of two spheres has been considered in detail. Finite closed formulae to calculation of interaction energy of two spherical particles with constant surface charges have been obtained from general expressions within zero approximation. The known relationships of Deryagin-Landaw-Lifshits-Over- beek theory follow from our formulae in the limit cases.

Industrial acidic zinc electrolyte has been treated with calcium compounds and/or concentrated ammonia solution and resulting crystalline phases as well as equilibrium mother liquors were analyzed in detail for dependence on preliminary dilution of electrolyte with water. Neutralized zinc electrolyte was an object of investigation in zinc(II) extraction with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) as an extractant. Dependencies of zinc(II) and contaminants extraction on equilibrium pH, isotherms of zinc(II) extraction and stripping have been studied. During simulated laboratory counter-current trial of zinc extraction a new zinc electrolyte (stripped solution) has been produced. Raffinates left after the process were purified and qualified as mineral magnesium-ammonium fertilizer solutions.

Zbadano wpływ symetrycznego elektrolitu NaBr i niesymetrycznego elektrolitu MgCl2 na własności stabilizacyjne jonowego surfaktanta dla układu toluen-wodny roztwór SDS i elektrolitu. Oba elektrolity ułatwiają adsorpcję SDS, przy czym MgCl2 jest skuteczniejszy. Niekorzystny wpływ elektrolitu związany jest ze zmniejszeniem zasięgu podwójnej warstwy elektrycznej. NaBr pozwala zachować własności stabilizacyjne SDS przy jego niskich i wysokich stężeniach. MgCl2 zwiększa własności stabilizacyjne SDS przy jego wysokich stężeniach, ale całkowicie destabilizuje dyspersję przy niskich stężeniach SDS.
The influence of symmetric (NaBr) and non-symmetric electrolyte (MgCl2) on stabilizing properties of ionic surfactant for dispersion toluene/(aqueous solution of SDS and electrolyte) was investigated. Both salts enhance SDS adsorption but MgCl2 is more effective. Unfavorable effect of electrolyte is associated with reduction of electric double layer extent. NaBr allows the preservation of stabilizing properties of SDS at its low and high concentrations. MgCl2 increases stabilizing effect at high SDS concentrations but can totally destabilize the dispersion at low SDS concentrations.

The present study describes a method for the determination of As (III) and As (V) in copper electrolytes. The method is based on the separation of As (III) from a copper electrolyte by triple liquid-liquid extraction using a non-polar organic solvent in a medium of 10-12 mol L–1 HCl. The extract contains As (III) and the raffinate-As (V), respectively. As(III) specie can be re-extracted from the organic solvent through the water. Analyzes of the concentration of As in the re-extract and raffinate were performed by ICP-OES spectroscopic method. The average recovery of arsenic by the proposed method is about 99%. Repeatability was estimated with RSD (n = 6). Selectivity and accuracy were proven by the standard addition method. The relative error for restoring the standard addition of As (III) is about 0.3%. The speciation method analysis could be applied for determination of the arsenic species in the analytical quality control of refined copper in copper tanks in the production of copper cathodes.

The present work contributes to the analysis of the effect of electrolyte and pH on the adsorption of dicephalic N-dodecyl-N,N-bis[(3-D-aldonylamido) propyl]amines (aldonyl = gluconyl and lactobionyl) at the air/water interface. The headgroup of these surfactants consists of two amide groups connected by a central tertiary amine, which may be protonated in an aqueous environment. We performed measurements of surface tension isotherms of aqueous solutions of the studied dicephalics in the presence of NaCl and NaOH and applied the STDE model for evaluation of the experimental results. They showed that the adsorption of the surfactants at the air/water interface was pH- and electrolyte- dependent, since addition of NaCl and NaOH had different effects on the surface activity and critical micelle concentration values (CMC). The theoretical model reflected well the surface tension isotherms obtained for a broad range of surfactants concentration, confirming the theoretical predictions concerning the protonation of tertiary amines, which was additionally supported by the measurements of solution pH.

INTRODUCTION The role of magnesium defi ciency in metabolic syndrome pathophysiology is one of the issue presently discussed in the literature. The others electrolyte disturbances in this syndrome are also the object of interest. The aim of the study was to analyze electrolyte equilibrium disorders in patients with metabolic syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 36 (29 females and 9 males) patients with metabolic syndrome hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Wards of District Hospitals in Blachownia and Pajęczno and 29 (10 females and 19 males) healthy volunteers (control group). The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to IDF (2005) criteria. RESULTS In contrast to the sodium and potassium serum magnesium level was signifi cantly lower in patients with metabolic syndrome than in the control group. Moreover there was a negative serum magnesium correlation between waist circumference and body mass index among patients with metabolic syndrome. There were positive correlations between serum sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum potassium and triglycerides concentrations in the group with metabolic syndrome. The foregoing correlations were not found in the control group. CONCLUSIONS 1. Serum magnesium was significantly lower in patients with metabolic syndrome than in the control group. 2. The correlation between serum magnesium and waist circumference, body mass index shows the possible abdominal fatty tissue influence on magnesium equilibrium among patients with metabolic syndrome. 3. The positive correlation between serum sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure points the possible role of sodium in pathogenesis of hypertension in metabolic syndrome.
WSTĘP Jednym z problemów patofi zjologii zespołu metabolicznego dyskutowanym w aktualnym piśmiennictwie jest rola niedoboru magnezu. Przedmiotem zainteresowania są również inne zaburzenia elektrolitowe w tym zespole. Celem prezentowanego badania była analiza zaburzeń elektrolitowych u chorych z zespołem metabolicznym hospitalizowanych na oddziałach chorób wewnętrznych. MATERIAŁ I METODY Analizie poddano 36 (29 kobiet i 9 mężczyzn) pacjentów hospitalizowanych w Oddziale Chorób Wewnętrznych Szpitala w Blachowni i Pajęcznie spełniających kryteria zespołu metabolicznego oraz 29 (10 kobiet i 19 mężczyzn) zdrowych ochotników (grupa kontrolna). Zespół metaboliczny rozpoznawano na podstawie kryteriów International Diabetes Federation (IDF) z 2005 roku. WYNIKI W odróżnieniu od sodu i potasu, stężenie magnezu w surowicy u chorych z zespołem metabolicznym było mniejsze niż u osób zdrowych. Ponadto stężenie magnezu w surowicy wykazywało ujemną korelację z obwodem talii oraz BMI badanych chorych. U osób obciążonych zespołem metabolicznym wykazano dodatnie korelacje pomiędzy stężeniami sodu oraz ciśnieniem skurczowym i rozkurczowym, jak również między stężeniem potasu i triacylogliceroli. Powyższych korelacji nie stwierdzono w grupie kontrolnej. WNIOSKI 1. Stężenie magnezu w surowicy chorych z zespołem metabolicznym jest znamiennie mniejsze niż u osób zdrowych. 2. Istniejąca korelacja między stężeniem magnezu w surowicy i obwodem w talii oraz współczynnikiem BMI u osób z zespołem metabolicznym wskazuje na możliwy wpływ tkanki tłuszczowej brzusznej na gospodarkę magnezową. 3. Dodatnia korelacja pomiędzy stężeniem sodu i ciśnieniem skurczowym oraz rozkurczowym wskazuje na prawdopodobną rolę tego jonu w patogenezie nadciśnienia tętniczego u osób z zespołem metabolicznym.
