The historical knowledge of Poles, including Polish students, leaves much to be desired, even on a basic level. The insufficient or even the lack of consolidation is the most likely explanation of this phenomenon. The proposed solution to this problem is the SuperMemo and its similar algorithms, along with school history content specially edited for its needs. Basically an algorithm is a set of steps leading to the completion of a task. In the SuperMemo case, the task is to optimize learning, or rather to reduce forgetfulness, while reducing the time devoted to still well-remembered knowledge. Both the SuperMemo and its similar have been implemented in many applications. Quizlet or the software with the same name as the algorithm – SuperMemo, are the examples of such applications. They allow you to learn your own materials as well as those already edited, either by the producer or by other users. The previously edited school historical content for the SuperMemo algorithm and its similar cannot be considered satisfactory if important issues such as: compliance with the core curriculum, division into classes and topics, historical narrative coherence, relationships between pairs of questions and answers, or degrees of difficulty, are regarded. This article proposes a method that can improve this state of affairs. It is the result of theoretical and quasi-experimental work, corrected later on the basis of more serious editorial experience.

Background: The occurrence of widespread RNA and DNA sequence differences in the human transcriptome was reported in 2011. Similar findings were described in a second independent publication on personal omics profiling investigating the occurrence of dynamic molecular and related medical phenotypes. The suggestion that the RNA sequence variation was likely to affect disease susceptibility prompted us to investigate with a range of algorithms the amino acid variants reported to be present in the identified peptides to determine if they might be disease-causing. Results: The predictive qualities of the different algorithms were first evaluated by using nonsynonymous single-base nucleotide polymorphism (nsSNP) datasets, using independently established data on amino acid variants in several proteins as well as data obtained by mutational mapping and modelling of binding sites in the human serotonin transporter protein (hSERT). Validation of the used predictive algorithms was at a 75% level. Using the same algorithms, we found that widespread RNA and DNA sequence differences were predicted to impair the function of the peptides in over 57% of cases. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a proportion of edited RNAs which serve as templates for protein synthesis is likely to modify protein function, possibly as an adaptive survival mechanism in response to environmental modifications.

Stanisław Przybyszewski’s oeuvre is not “pop”. This paper scrutinizes a catalogue of determinants that encouraged the writer’s initial renown and then led to his ultimate decline in popularity. Was Przybyszewski’s “fall from grace” justifiable? In my analysis, I refer to three different approaches to the concept of “pop”. In the first approach, “pop” is understood as a contrast between high and low culture. In the second, it is interpreted in relation to the institutions that indirectly affirm and popularize one’s literary input. The third one is associated with source literary text editing. Using these three categories is not supposed to present the author himself, but rather a certain phenomenon in European literary culture. Przybyszewski, the so-called “meteor of the Young Poland period”, is a particularly poignant example of how initial fascination with an avant-garde artist could change into oblivion and absence in reading culture. The comments formulated in this article are directed primarily to the reader who does not know the history of Polish literature, and the method of reaching the reader is to focus on a selected example showing a repeatable sequence in careers of many other authors of the period.

Works belonging to the world literary canon are widely commented on by literary scholars. The editorial aspects of the editions of the same works, however, do not have such thorough studies. The discussion of the editorial features of children’s publications seems to be all the more important because improperly selected typographic parameters may significantly impair the quality of the reading experience and discourage reading itself. The article indicates the importance of particular architectural elements of the Polish editions of two masterpieces of children’s literature, Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland, which appeared in Poland after 1989. The indication of specific typographical sizes and layouts of illustrations makes it possible to determine reading competences which should be possessed by a reader designed by the publisher, and thus also to prove whether a particular edition has been given an appropriate editorial design for the recipient.

The aim of the present study was to find out whether students’ active involvement in classroom activities can promote language learning. This paper, using practitioner research, examines the active involvement of first-year engineering students in a film activity. The research took place in three phases: (1) the students were divided into five groups and given an assignment each, a month ahead, to edit a full-length movie to one hour without tampering with its story element; (2) the five groups presented five different edited movies on five different days; (3) the data was collected and analysed by the teacher as follows: observing the classroom performance, transcribing the students’ spoken language, and collecting the students’ written transcripts. The research analysis and discussion show that the whole process of the film task provided a rich input in listening and reading, and subsequently a productive language output in speaking and writing. The feedback conducted states that the students enjoyed the video classes thoroughly and the experience was rewarding because of their active involvement in the practice of LSRW skills.

Editing in plant mitochondria consists in C to U changes and mainly affects messenger RNAs, thus providing the correct genetic information for the biosynthesis of mitochondrial (mt) proteins. But editing can also affect some of the plant mt tRNAs encoded by the mt genome. In dicots, a C to U editing event corrects a C:A mismatch into a U:A base-pair in the acceptor stem of mt tRNAPhe (GAA). In larch mitochondria, three C to U editing events restore U:A base-pairs in the acceptor stem, D stem and anticodon stem, respectively, of mt tRNAHis (GUG). For both these mt tRNAs editing of the precursors is a prerequisite for their processing into mature tRNAs. In potato mt tRNACys (GCA), editing converts a C28:U42 mismatch in the anticodon stem into a U28:U42 non-canonical base-pair, and reverse transcriptase minisequencing has shown that the mature mt tRNACys is fully edited. In the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha this U residue is encoded in the mt genome and evolutionary studies suggest that restoration of the U28 residue is necessary when it is not encoded in the gene. However, in vitro studies have shown that neither processing of the precursor nor aminoacylation of tRNACys requires C to U editing at this position. But sequencing of the purified mt tRNACys has shown that is present at position 28, indicating that C to U editing is a prerequisite for the subsequent isomerization of U into Ψ at position 28.

The Geological Quarterly has come a long way since the first is sue was published in 1957 under the Polish title Kwartalnik Geologiczny. From a local bulletin publishing studies of the Pol ish Geological Institute it has became an international journal, in dexed since 2003 by the Institute for Scientific Informa tion. The impact factor for 2006 was 0.846, a considerable increase (IF2005 - 0.325) representing upgrading in the "Geology" category to 22nd position among 36 journals ranked. Despite the growing significance of regional geoscientific journals, the Geological Quarterly will face new challenges in coming years due to competition from other periodicals, including those from Central and Eastern Europe. The global tendency of limiting the paper is sues of journals in favour of electronic versions will enforce changes inediting and distribution. Better rankings of the journal lead to a growing submission rate, associated with increased risk of dealing with manuscripts including duplicated material.

In the article the question of constructing an image through epistolography is discussed based on the examples of Józef Pilch — a bibliophile and historian amateur from Ustroń in Cieszyn Silesia. The volume of his correspondence was published on the occasion of 25th anniversary of his death in 2020. The authoress proves that his portrait is doubly mediated — firstly, in the letters received by the article’s hero, secondly, in the idea of the editor who chose to emphasize the unusual side to Pilch’s personality — and she ruminates over whether the editor’s idea was well-founded. She considers relations between self-creation (self-presentation) and authenticity in order to point out that the recipient’s authority at last decides about the sender’s portrait. Especially when — like in the case of the analyzed correspondence — one deals with a relational subject and the dominance of forming and sustaining bonds between people on other functions of epistolography. It turns out to be crucial in the context of Pilch’s image, because he sometimes created it by means of other people’s phrases and autobiographical patterns, and notably because it was verified by the others — not only in their answers for letters, but first of all during meetings and direct communication with the sender. Finally the authoress considers several aspects of Pilch’s creation of his own archive — on the basis of which the volume’s editor built the image of the self-taught humanist from Ustroń.

The first part of the article discusses the popularity of editing courses at Polish universities and colleges in the last several years; it focuses on different fields of studies, e.g. law, history, librarianship, or Polish studies. Unfortunately, these courses are often limited to basic editor’s skills; the author expresses an opinion that, if they are not accompanied by advanced studies on literature and language, the professional success of the graduates cannot be guaranteed. The second part is devoted to the problems of textual criticism and scholarly editing in Poland nowadays. The author discusses the latest editions of important Polish writers and the most urgent needs in this domain. Another topic touched upon are the transcription rules of old Polish texts. The last part presents and discusses perspectives of the electronic edition: it may attain a high level of attractiveness and value if it becomes something more than just an image of the printed edition on the screen, something that cannot be simply printed out.

The paper asks whether editing of 18th-century texts is still needed. By answering this question, she tracks the changes in editing on the example of Polish research on the Enlightenment. On the one hand, it shows how vital classical editing of the 20th century was: publishing volumes of collected works, correspondence, poetry, anthologies – types of editions whose development peaked in Poland in the communist era when cultural policy financially supported scientific editions in order to use them for ideological goals. On the other hand, the author points out how much the demand for critical editions has changed in modern times, especially in the field of humanistic themes and turns, i.e., gender studies and women’s journals, in which the author of the paper specialises (intimate women’s journals of the 18th and 19th centuries). The paper also deals with the digitisation of sources and scientific editions. The author recognises the advantages of this digitisation challenge and points to its rarely discussed limitations. The conclusion emphasises the importance of scientific anthologies and the editorship itself, which enables direct contact with the text and its more profound understanding, especially in order to understand tradition and the present day.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases play a central role in maintaining accuracy during the translation of the genetic code. To achieve this challenging task they have to discriminate against amino acids that are very closely related not only in structure but also in chemical nature. A 'double-sieve' editing model was proposed in the late seventies to explain how two closely related amino acids may be discriminated. However, a clear understanding of this mechanism required structural information on synthetases that are faced with such a problem of amino acid discrimination. The first structural basis for the editing model came recently from the crystal structure of isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, a class I synthetase, which has to discriminate against valine. The structure showed the presence of two catalytic sites in the same enzyme, one for activation, a coarse sieve which binds both isoleucine and valine, and another for editing, a fine sieve which binds only valine and rejects isoleucine. Another structure of the enzyme in complex with tRNA showed that the tRNA is responsible for the translocation of the misactivated amino-acid substrate from the catalytic site to the editing site. These studies were mainly focused on class I synthetases and the situation was not clear about how class II enzymes discriminate against similar amino acids. The recent structural and enzymatic studies on threonyl-tRNA synthetase, a class II enzyme, reveal how this challenging task is achieved by using a unique zinc ion in the active site as well as by employing a separate domain for specific editing activity. These studies led us to propose a model which emphasizes the mirror symmetrical approach of the two classes of enzymes and highlights that tRNA is the key player in the evolution of these class of enzymes.

The article discusses the goals and methods for publishing anthologies of old sermons in connection with the publication of the monumental three-volume edition comprising a total of 1849 print pages, entitled: Sermons in Polish Culture. Editions of Thematic Collections, ed. K. Panuś, Vols. 1–3, Kraków 2014. This edition onsists of three separate collections of thematic sermons: Marian Sermons, vol. 1; Funeral Sermons, vol. 2; and Passion Sermons, vol. 3. It is the largest compendium of old preaching texts representing the homiletic tradition from the Middle Ages to the 21st century in Polish humanities. The three volumes comprise a total of 69 editions of original Polish sermons and translations from Latin, in the following order: 33 Marian, 15 Funeral and 21 Passion sermons. The compendium gathers 62 preachers’ talks from the Middle Ages, including Peregryn of Opole, Mateusz of Kraków, Mikołaj of Błonie, Stanisław of Skarbimierz, Jan of Szamotuły; and from the modern era, including Grzegorz Orszak, Jakub Wujek, Piotr Skarga, Krzysztof Kraiński, Fabian Birkowski, Szymon Starowolski; as well as contemporary authors, such as Stefan Wyszyński, Karol Wojtyła, and Józef Tischner. Each volume is preceded by a separate extensive introduction (by R. Mazurkiewicz, K. Panuś, M. Skwara, J. S. Gruchała) which presents the current state of research and lists of abbreviations, and states the principles of the publication and transcription. The main difficulty in preparing the anthology was the choice of the editing method, which could not be uniform due to the variety of time periods, the choice of authors, and the fact that Latin translations, original Old Polish versions, and texts in contemporary Polish were all included in one series. The editorial work was done in accordance with codicological, philological, and factual standards. Questions may arise with regard to the language. Would not it have been better to include the Latin sermons in the form of a testimonium? It was a result of the authors’ compromise between maintaining the editorial level, and the intention of making the ‘valuable source material for the history of language, literature, art, religious culture, spirituality, and customs widely available’. The answer to the question posed in the title of the article is positive. It is worth, as long as the edition and the critical apparatus go hand in hand with the proper selection of material and adopting a complementary, interdisciplinary perspective on sermons understood as pieces of sacral writing for spiritual development and religious teaching, which, consequently, become a treasury of ideas and language.
Artykuł jest dyskusją wokół celów i metod wydawania antologii tekstów dawnych kazań w związku z wydaniem monumentalnej trzytomowej edycji liczącej w sumie 1849 stron druku, pt.: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje Kolekcji Tematycznych, red. K. Panuś, t. 1-3, Kraków 2014. Na omawianą edycję składają się trzy odrębne zbiory kazań tematycznych: Kazania maryjne, t. 1; Kazania funeralne, t. 2 oraz Kazania pasyjne, t. 3. Całość stanowi największe kompendium dawnych tekstów kaznodziejskich reprezentujących tradycję homiletyczną od średniowiecza do XXI w. w polskiej humanistyce. W trzech tomach umieszczono w sumie 69 edycji kazań w oryginale polskim lub w tłumaczeniach z języka łacińskiego, w kolejności: 33 maryjne, 15 funeralne oraz 21 pasyjnych. Razem kompendium zbiera mowy 62 kaznodziejów począwszy od średniowiecznych, m.in.: Peregryna z Opola, Mateusza z Krakowa, Mikołaja z Błonia, Stanisława ze Skarbimierza i Jana z Szamotuł oraz nowożytnych m.in.: Grzegorza Orszaka, Jakuba Wujka, Piotra Skargi, Krzysztofa Kraińskiego, Fabiana Birkowskiego i Szymona Starowolskiego i współczesnych Stefana Wyszyńskiego, Karola Wojtyły i Józefa Tischnera. Każdy tom poprzedzony jest odrębnym obszernym wstępem (R. Mazurkiewicza, K. Panusia, M. Skwary, J. S. Gruchały) z przedstawieniem stanu badań, wykazem skrótów oraz zasadami wydania i transkrypcji. Główną trudnością w przygotowaniu antologii był wybór metody edytorskiej, która w przypadku edycji z kilku epok nie mogła być jednolita, wybór autorów oraz umieszczenie w jednej serii kazań w tłumaczeniu z łaciny z kazaniami w oryginalnym brzmieniu staropolskim lub współczesnej polszczyzny. Strona edytorska jest przygotowana pod kątem kodykologicznym, filologicznym i rzeczowym. Pytania może zaś budzić strona językowa. Czy nie lepiej było w przypadku łacińskich kazań umieścić je w formie testimonium? Był to efekt kompromisu ze strony autorów między zachowaniem poziomu edytorskiego, a intencją szerszego udostępnienia „cennego materiału źródłowego do poznania dziejów języka, literatury, sztuki, kultury religijnej, duchowości i obyczajów”. Odpowiedź na postawione w artykule pytanie jest pozytywna. Warto, o ile edycja i aparat krytyczny idzie w parze z właściwą selekcją materiału oraz z komplementarnym, interdyscyplinarnym widzeniem kazań jako piśmiennictwa sakralnego, służącego duchowemu budowaniu i religijnemu nauczaniu, i w konsekwencji „czytanych” dziś jako „teksty kultury”, skarbnica idei i języka.

Głównym tematem opracowania jest porównanie standardów wykonywania mapy zasadniczej w aspekcie zmian przepisów prawa, jakie dokonują się w Polsce na przestrzeni ostatnich trzydziestu lat. Analizie został poddany zakres zmian, którym podlegała redakcja kartograficznej treści mapy zasadniczej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem treści i formy opisów prezentowanych na mapie. Dokonano porównania standardów wykonywania tego opracowania na podstawie Instrukcji Technicznej K-1 z 1998 roku [8] oraz zmieniającego ją rozporządzenia z dnia 12 lutego 2013 roku w sprawie bazy danych geodezyjnej ewidencji sieci uzbrojenia terenu, bazy danych obiektów topograficznych oraz mapy zasadniczej (zwanego dalej: rozporządzenie BDOT, 2013) [14], a także znowelizowanego rozporządzenia z dnia 2 listopada 2015 roku w sprawie bazy danych obiektów topograficznych oraz mapy zasadniczej (zwanego dalej: rozporządzenie BDOT, 2015) [15]. Te rozporządzenia, w połączeniu z nowelizacją w 2014 roku ustawy Prawo geodezyjne i kartograficzne [20] spowodowały przełomową zmianę w podejściu do mapy zasadniczej, zmieniając znacząco formę jej prowadzenia, zakres danych, jaki ma obejmować, oraz redakcję, czyli jej aspekt wizualny. W obecnym założeniu mapa zasadnicza jest bowiem raportem generowanym na podstawie danych z sześciu równolegle prowadzonych i aktualizowanych baz [1, 6]. Porównanie objęło opisy, redakcję mapy, a także jej płaszczyznę pojęciową.
The main subject of the study is comparison to the standards for the preparation of the base map in view of the amendments to the legal provisions, which have been taking place in Poland over the last thirty years. The scope of the changes to the editing of the cartographic content of the base map was analyzed, with particular emphasis on the form and content of the presented descriptions. The map preparation standards were compared [8], based on the Technical Guideline K-1 of 1998, and the amending Regulation of 12 February 2013 on the database of the surveying records of public utilities, the database of topographic objects and the base map (hereinafter referred to as the BDOT Regulation, 2013) [14], as well as the amended Regulation of 2 November 2015 on the database of topographic objects and the base map (hereinafter referred to as the BDOT Regulation, 2015) [15]. These Regulations, in conjunction with the amendment to the Geodetic and Cartographic Law of 2014 [20], have resulted in historic changes in the approach to the base map, significantly changing the form of its records, the scope of the data to be covered, and the editing, i.e. its visual aspect. The current assumption is that the base map is in fact a report generated from six databases, kept and updated simultaneously [1, 6, 11]. The aforementioned comparison referred primarily to the descriptions, map editing, as well as to the conceptual level.

In this article the author analyzes the evolution of the role of the translator in a world dominated by new technologies and the influence of these on the training of future translators. She focuses primarily on machine translation and post-editing. The purpose is illustrated by the results of experiments carried out within the framework of a program belonging to the EMT network and whose objective is to compare the steps of rewording in target language by post-editing and by a human translation exclusively. These experiments make it possible to draw some conclusions concerning the training of students integrating machine translation and post-editing.

Celem artykułu jest zbadanie sposobów manifestowania się w tekstach Leopolda Buczkowskiego śladów doświadczeń traumatycznych. Jak dowodzi autor szkicu, miejscem ich objawiania się jest, w pierwszej kolejności, graficzny wymiar tych książek, nazywany przez niego „traumatografiami”. W późniejszych fazach twórczości autor Czarnego potoku rozwinie oryginalną koncepcję spauzowania języka jako jedynej formy adekwatnego świadczenia o wojennych zdarzeniach. Buczkowski, świadek nazistowskiej eksterminacji podolskich Żydów, nie tylko jako jeden z pierwszych twórców kultury europejskiej postawi pytanie o warunki możliwości literatury po Zagładzie, ale również udzieli na nie jednej z najradykalniejszych odpowiedzi, domagając się od tej strony całkowitej redefinicji samego pojęcia literackości.
The main aim of the article is to examine the ways in which traces of traumatic experiences manifest themselves in Leopold Buczkowski’s texts. AsI argue, the sphere of their manifestation is first of all the graphic dimension of these books, which I call “traumatographies”. In later stages of his work, the author of a novel Czarny potok [Black Current] would develop an original concept of pausing the language as the only form of adequate testimony about wartime events. Buczkowski, a witness of the Nazi extermination of Jews from Podole, would not only be one of the first European writers to pose a question about the feasibility of creating literature after the Holocaust, but would also provide one of the most radical answers, one that demands a complete redefinition of the very concept of literature.

The methodology and practice of Latin text editing is presented in the paper as an example of a humanities scholar’s work that combines scientific effort with artistic activity, including forgery of works by old masters. Part one outlines the methodological situation in textual criticism in the 1960s and 1970s, when the author was a university student and novice researcher. Next, the author considers what caused changes in editing methodology in subsequent decades and, finally, he comments on present-day debates surrounding the role of the academic editor, with a special focus on the interdisciplinary aspects of this issue.

In this paper I analyze the materialization and public debate over the “Polish Migration Policy – current stage and the recommended actions” document, and the parts regarding the integration of immigrants in particular. I apply a neoinstitutional theoretical framework which allows me to conceptualize the mechanisms of the Europeanization process, and show that the integration policy is mainly developed by imitating the instruments promoted by the European Commission. I study imitation by applying the notions of translation and editing. This allows me to understand how the imitated model is adapted in the local context. The non-governmental organizations which commented on the document perceived the European model as suited for imitation. The public debate over the “Migration Policy of Poland” contributed to further strengthening and adaptation of the imitated model.

The present paper contains information about dramas in editions of Cyprian Kamil Norwid's writings published up till now, and especially about editorial differences between them, mainly in the field of language, and to a lesser degree, in the field of punctuation. These results are then compared with the text of dramas prepared for a new edition of Norwid's works (Collected Works) that started to appear in 2007 under the imprint of the Learned Society of the Catholic University of Lublin. The Author of the present article has prepared dramas for the edition, taking the poet's autographs or (in case of their being lost) their first edition as the basis. It has turned out that a considerable number of corrections had to be made in the new edition of the text of Norwid's dramas, which is illustrated in the article by numerous examples.

In accordance with the title, the article is concerned with the editorial problems posed by the part of Norwid's work that is least known, that is his notes and albums,. The need of reflection on this domain of the poet's work appeared along with the new edition of the poet's Works. Within the edition Norwid's “portfolios” have been separated as individual volumes, which stresses both the qualitative and quantitative dimension of the phenomenon in the work of the author of On the freedom of speech (Gomulicki's edition of Complete Works included only the texts written with Norwid's own hand, excluding prints and illustrations – drawn both by the poet himself and by other people). On the one hand the article explains the reasons for such a decision, and on the other it undertakes a number of editorial questions as well as ones connected with the text that appear as a consequence of the assumptions that have been made. Apart from the problem of the autonomy of Norwid's notes and albums the question of the integral character of the collection has been touched upon; also, the problem of their final textological form, their contents (e.g. the question if inserts made by hand should be included, as they are not Norwid's own texts, but together with the notes and drawings they constitute a certain semantic and compositional whole). Ordering the illegible and sometimes complicated compositional design of the collection should be accompanied by reflection – which is shown by analyses – saying that in the case of Norwid's notes and albums (e.g. in the case of the so-called “his own summaries” or “the authors summaries”) excessive care taken of legibility and accessibility (an example being Gomulicki's edition) may lead to excessive “polishing”, and in consequence to upsetting the genological bases of the notes and albums. The problem is also raised of legibility of the notes and other sources Norwid used (often the notes are just excerpts from books he had read, and the drawings and water-colors are imitations of other artists' works). Selected issues from the domain of editing notes and albums show the specificity and stress the identity of this part of Norwid's work.

Even if language teachers regularly rely on audio-visual resources, fi lm making and editing is still considered as an avant-garde teaching approach. Its potential lies in the fact that it allows the role of the student to shift from refl ective viewer to knowledgeable content producer. In this article, we will present the results of a research conducted among 36 learners of French attending the same secondary school. The study had three major goals. Primarily, it was to indicate students’ general perception of video-editing activities, i.e. to determine whether learners really consider this type of tasks as interesting and profi table. The second aim of the research was to fi nd out whether opinions of people coming across this kind of tasks for the fi rst time would be divergent with the statements made by those who benefi t from it regularly during foreign language classes. Finally, another important goal of the research was to indicate whether variables such as gender, length of foreign language instruction, profile, as well as pupils’ general views on the nature of second language learning and the self-perception of their language abilities can have an impact on their video-editing activities perception.

The application of plant biotechnology to enhance beneficial traits in crops is now indispensable because of food insecurity due to increasing global population and climate change. The recent biotechnological development of the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated system 9 (Cas9) allows for a more simple and precise method of gene editing, which is now preferred compared to Zinc Finger Nucleases (ZFNs) and Transcription Activator-like Effector Nucleases (TALENs). In this review, recent progress in utilizing CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing in plants to enhance certain traits in beneficial crops, including rice, soybean, and oilseed rape, is discussed. In addition, novel methods of applying the CRISPR/Cas9 system in live cell imaging are also extensively reviewed. Despite all the applications, the existing delivery methods of CRISPR/Cas9 fail to provide consistent results and are inefficient for in planta transformation. Hence, research should be focused on improving current delivery methods or developing novel ones to facilitate CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing studies. Strict regulations on the sale and commercial growth of gene-edited crops have restricted more efforts in applying CRISPR/Cas9 technology in plant species. Therefore, a shift in public viewpoint toward gene editing would help to propel scientific progress rapidly.

W latach 2012–2019 w ramach dwóch konkursów finansowanych z Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki (NPRH) wydano 7 obszernych tomów antologii kazań. To „monumentalne dzieło” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, UW) mieści na ponad czterech tysiącach stron teksty kazań zarówno znanych i docenionych kaznodziejów, jak i mówców minorum gentium, komentarz naukowy do nich oraz aparat krytyczny. Seria, której wspólny tytuł brzmi: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych, „wyrasta powoli na jedną z najważniejszych w polskiej humanistyce XXI wieku” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, UP). Po latach zaniedbań zespół badawczy projektu podjął na nowo szeroko zakrojone prace nad tym ogromnym i nierozpoznanym dotychczas zasobem źródeł, jakim są kazania. Artykuł przestawia stan badań nad dziejami kaznodziejstwa polskiego, założenia projektu Kazania w kulturze polskiej i uczestniczące w nim zespoły badawcze, kryteria doboru tekstów kazań, osiągnięcia w realizacji projektu oraz uwagi krytyczne wskazane przez recenzentów.
In the years 2012–2019, as part of two competitions financed by the National Program for the Development of Humanities (NPRH), 7 extensive volumes of an anthology of sermons were published. This „monumental work” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, University of Warsaw) contains on over four thousand pages the texts of sermons of both well-known and appreciated preachers and speakers of minorum gentium, a scientific commentary on them and a critical apparatus. A series with a joint title is: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych (Sermons in Polish Culture. Editions of thematic collections) „is slowly growing into one of the most important in the Polish humanities of the 21st century” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, Pedagogical University). After years of neglect, the project’s research team resumed extensive work on this vast and hitherto unknown resource of sermons. The article presents the state of research on the history of Polish preaching, the assumptions of Kazania w kulturze polskiej (Sermons in Polish Culture) and the research teams participating in it, the criteria for selecting the texts of sermons, achievements in the project implementation and critical comments indicated by the reviewers.

In recent years, both in Poland and abroad, computer analysis methods have been increasingly used in forensic examinations. The article presents the operation and functionality of the computer program called COMPARATOR which is a joint project of the Polish Forensic Association and its Institute of Criminalistics. The COMPARATOR program is used for registration and presentation of images (samples) of handwriting, documents or their fragments as well as various types of forensic traces in 8 windows. The program allows of numerous useful operations in comparative and identification forensic analyses (including drawing, inversions, measurements, images overlay and matching). The application combines the advantages of graphic programs and spreadsheets - the user can directly perform statistical analyzes. It might also be used as a didactic aid for lecturers and speakers of diverse areas of expertise who want to present several images on the screen simultaneously in their lectures.

A high level of the nucleotide sequence conservation was found for mitochondrial nad3 gene of carrot. Three silent nucleotide substitutions differentiate nad3 open reading frames from cytoplasmic male sterile and male fertile carrots. All these differences are preserved on the RNA level. Partial and silent editing also distinguished both carrots. Three of the C to U conversions were specific to the fertile line. In the two examined carrot lines editing did not affect the mode of alteration of encoded amino acids.

Scholarly editing is a highly desirable and practical discipline. Being essential to philology, it now exists in different cultural, technological, economic, and organizational conditions. Obviously, it is possible to separate quintessentially scientific issues from so-called technical problems. Such separation does not demand vast knowledge, which does not interest or concern us, and gives the opportunity to justify potential mistakes. If some scholars’ attitude towards scholarly editing remains unchanged, it will lead us to stagnation and result in the long-lasting absence of unabridged editions of works by Polish classics.

This study reports the results of a mixed-methods approach to investigate the impact of peer online learner-driven feedback (LDF) using Google Docs and peer-editing in a face-to-face classroom on EFL learners’ writing skill. As this study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design, two intact groups, each including twenty EFL learners, were selected as the participants of the study. They were attending an IELTS preparation course at a language school in Iran. To assess the learners’ IELTS academic writing skills, we used academic writing task 1 and task 2 and conducted semi-structured interviews to explore the learners’ perceptions towards the impact of online learner-driven peer-editing on writing tasks. An independent-samples t-test, along with two one-way MANCOVA, was used to analyse the quantitative data. The results showed that LDF-based peer-editing significantly enhanced the learners’ academic writing skills, compared to the conventional in-class feedback. The thematic analysis used to analyse the qualitative data shed light on the learners’ positive perceptions towards the effect of online learner-driven peer-editing on academic writing skills.

The article presents a story of Jerzy Kotula (1855 – 1889), a book seller from Cieszyn, who greatly contributed to preserving Polish national identity of the Cieszyn area, being one of the local activists of the Evangelical Church. He was a book seller, editor, bibliographer while conducting educational activities. He provided funding for publications of books. Most notably, in 1879 he published a brochure in Cieszyn which presented a letter, dated 8 August, written to him by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and concerning the mission of Polish schools operating in Silesia. The brochure was entitled W sprawie szkół ludowych na Śląsku (kilka uwag dla nauczycieli) [In the Matter Folk Schools in Silesia (a few comments for teachers)]. From 1883 until his passing Jerzy Kotula owned and operated a Polish bookshop in Cieszyn.

Children’s book editing is an interdisciplinary field of research combining typography, pedagogy and didactics. The article deals with distinctions which are important, but still it is a little recognized and reviewed issue in the field of editorial means, which should be in a properly designed book subordinated to the basic functions: organization, navigation and cohesion. The examples presented showed that each element used in a children’s book design should serve at least one of these functions, as their effect is extended to support the learning of reading, articulation, spelling practice, etc. Typographical errors in the use of distinctions, causing reading to be disturbed, have also been highlighted. The aesthetics of such a book may have a positive or negative impact on the hygiene of reading - it may make it difficult to learn to read or even discourage one from dealing with a book. Properly applied - matched typographic distinctions improve the legibility of the text, i.e. make it easier for children - not skilled enough readers – to get used to the text and its educational layer. Aesthetics and high quality of publications aimed at children is a broad and still not very well described area of research, and this article is an attempt to raise awareness of this issue.

The author discusses the problem concerning modernisation of the historical, based on intonation, rhetorical punctuation system distinguished for ancient Polish texts (up to 18-th century) but hardly comprehensible nowadays. She presents the features of the system and rules of its application, quoting examples derived from printed literary masterpieces of three best known 16-th century Polish poets: Mikołaj Rej, Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński. Being convinced of inevitability of replacing old punctuation system by modern one (logical-syntactic) she also perceives necessity of description of the historical one.

Fiction and cinema are in the mode of constant interactive exchanges. At the initial stage of its formation as an art form, cinema not only actively borrowed, used and processed popular literary plots, but also transformed into its expressive system (poetics) purely literary means of expression. In its turn, fiction even before the advent of cinema used techniques that from a modern point of view can be classified as “cinematic”. In the process of developing its language (film poetics), the art of cinema not only “discovered”, transformed these means, but also expressed and improved them. As a result, the reverse effect arose and the poetics of cinema began to be integrated into the expressive and pictorial system of the art of speech, and especially actively from the 20s of last century. This process should be considered in the context of the synthesis of arts, the intensification of which took place at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when it was claimed that the art of the modern era acquired new forms of expression. In order to study the elements of film poetics in literary texts, it is necessary to thoroughly review the main components of film language, they are categories “editing” and “frame”, the first definitions of which were given by film directors (L. Kulieshov, S. Eizenshtein, V. Pudovkyn, M. Romm, A. Tarkovskyi). and literary critics (V. Shklovskyi, Yu. Tynianov, Yu. Lotman). Accompanying them should be considered cinematic means “plan”, “angle” and “rhythm”, the consideration of which includes the analysis of their manifestations in works of fiction. The functionality of the installation is easier and more accurate to explore the data of the history of its formation and attitude to it. Therefore, this exploration is devoted to the initial stages of development of cinema, in particular its specific means, as well as the achievements of the classics of cinema.
Художня література і кіно перебувають у режимі постійних інтерактивних обмінів. На початковій стадії свого формування як виду мистецтва кінематограф не лише активно запозичував, використовував і обробляв популярні літературні сюжети, а й трансформував у свою виражальну систему (поетику) суто літературні виражально-зображальні засоби. Своєю чергою, художня література ще до появи кінематографу користувалася прийомами, які із сучасного погляду можуть кваліфікуватися як «кінематографічні». У процесі розвитку своєї мови (кінопоетики) мистецтво кіно не лише “відкривало”, трансформувало ці засоби, а й увиразнювало та вдосконалювало їх. У зв’язку з цим почався зворотний вплив – поетика кіно почала інтегруватися у виражально-зображальну систему мистецтва слова, й особливо активно – із 20-х років минулого століття. Цей процес слід розглядати в контексті синтезу мистецтв, інтенсифікація якого відбувалася на межі ХІХ–ХХ ст., коли стверджувалося, набувало нових виражальних форм мистецтво епохи модернізму. Задля глибшого вивчення елементів кінопоетики в літературних текстах необхідний ґрунтовний огляд основних складників кіномови – категорій “монтаж” та “кадр”, перші визначення яким дали кінорежисери (Л. Кулєшов, С. Ейзенштейн, В. Пудовкин, М. Ромм, А. Тарковський) та літературознавці (В. Шкловський, Ю. Тинянов, Ю. Лотман). Супровідними до них слід уважати кінематографічні засоби “план”, “ракурс” і “ритм”, розгляд яких включає також аналіз їх проявів у творах художньої літератури. Функціональність монтажу легше і точніше дослідити на даних історії його становлення та ставлення до нього. Тому ця розвідка присвячена початковим етапам розвитку кінематографу, зокрема його специфічних засобів, а також досягненням класиків кіно.

The article discusses the question of syntactic norm of legal acts on the background of the syntactic norm of the standard language. After the presentation of the relationship between the syntactic norm of legal acts and the norm of the standard language, especially its model variety, the author continues to describe the selected syntactic features testifying to a specific character of the observed norm. The examples given furnish evidence for quantitative and qualitative differences between the standard and the professional norm. Two research postulates can be put forward as a result of the conducted analyses. The first one, of general nature, concerns efforts which would be aimed at the new presentation of the position of the professional norm in the norm of the standard Polish language. The second postulate refers to the studies of the legal language which should be expanded by embracing the problems concerning the codification of a syntactic norm.

All living organisms conduct protein synthesis with a high degree of accuracy maintained in the transmission and flow of information from a gene to protein product. One crucial 'quality control' point in maintaining a high level of accuracy is the selectivity by which aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases furnish correctly activated amino acids, attached to tRNA species, as the building blocks for growing protein chains. When differences in binding energies of amino acids to an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase are inadequate, editing is used as a major determinant of enzyme selectivity. Some incorrect amino acids are edited at the active site before the transfer to tRNA (pre-transfer editing), while others are edited after transfer to tRNA at a separate editing site (post-transfer editing). Access of natural non-protein amino acids, such as homocysteine, homoserine, or ornithine to the genetic code is prevented by the editing function of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. Disabling editing function leads to tRNA mischarging errors and incorporation of incorrect amino acids into protein, which is detrimental to cell homeostasis and inhibits growth. Continuous homocysteine editing by methionyl-tRNA synthetase, resulting in the synthesis of homocysteine thiolactone, is part of the process of tRNA aminoacylation in living organisms, from bacteria to man. Excessive homocysteine thiolactone synthesis in hyperhomocysteinemia caused by genetic or nutritional deficiencies is linked to human vascular and neurological diseases.

The conversion of right-handed dsDNA and dsRNA to the left-handed Z-conformation involves a reorganization of the nucleotides relative to each other. This conversion can be facilitated by the tight binding of a Z-conformation-specific protein domain from the editing enzyme dsRNA adenosine deaminase. This may influence the modification of both pre-mRNAs as well as some replicating RNA viruses.

Bronia (Brejndl) Baum (1896–1947) was an orthodox writer, activist and publicist. She was born in a Hasidic family in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. She published poems and articles in Yiddish in “Der Jud”, “Dos Jidisze Togblat”, “Bejs Jakow” and in Hebrew in “Bat Izrael”, “Baderech”. In the family archive among the manuscripts of Bronia Baum from 1912–1921, a diary written in Russian has been preserved. Considering the content and form of records, it can be most accurately described as an intimate diary. The notes of Bronia Baum are a valuable source for research in the field of local Jewish history, especially during the First World War, but also for issues related to Jewish orthodoxy, Zionism and religious feminism.

Opis:
Edycje źródeł stanowią podstawowe narzędzie pracy. Ich przygotowywanie jest zawsze żmudnym procesem, a zarazem próbą dla wydawców. Ponad 30 lat temu humaniści zaczęli korzystać z techniki cyfrowej podczas tworzenia edycji. Od 20 lat można mówić o e-edytorstwie jako odrębnej dziedzinie badawczej. Nadal głównym problemem pozostaje opracowanie jednolitych zasad, które umożliwiają jak najpełniejsze zbudowanie aparatu krytycznego. Wśród wielu propozycji na szczególną uwagę zasługuje Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), który jest szeroko stosowany do tworzenia rozmaitych edycji. W artykule przedstawiono niektóre problemy związane z budowaniem aparatu krytycznego przy pomocy TEI.
Source editions are a basic tool for the scientific activity. They are time-consuming and need a huge workload. They testify also skills of an editor. Since more than 30 years scholars have been using the digital technology for editing. Since 20 years an e-editing has existed as the established branch of science. Preparing a set of uniform and precise instructions for the critical apparatus in e-editions remains still a main problem. Among many programmes Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is the most comprehensive tool for preparing of editions. This paper presents some problems related to creating of critical apparatus under TEI.

The paper gives an overview on the history and present state of the edition of the complete works of Leonhard Euler (1707–1783). After several failed initiatives in the 19th century, the project began in 1907 with the edition of Euler’s printed works. The works were divided into three series: I. Mathematics (29 volumes); II. Mechanics and Astronomy (31 volumes); and III. Physics and Miscellaneous (12 volumes). After several ups and downs due to two World Wars and economic problems, the publication of the printed works with a total of 72 volumes is nearly finished. Only two volumes on perturbation theory in astronomy are still missing. The publication of series IV (manuscripts and correspondence) started in 1967 as a joint project of the Swiss and the Soviet academies of sciences. The manuscript edition was postponed, and the project focussed on Euler’s correspondence which contains approximately 3000 letters, 1000 of them written by Euler. The correspondents include famous mathematicians of the 18th century like d’Alembert, Clairaut and the Bernoullis, but also many less known people with whom Euler corresponded on a great variety of subjects. A major problem is to find and to finance appropriate editors who are able to read French, Latin, and the old German handwriting, and who are acquainted with history, culture and science of the 18th century. During the last 50 years, the editors gathered copies or scans of most of the preserved Euler’s letters. The original letters addressed to Euler were made available to the editorial group in Switzerland by the Russian Academy of Sciences before World War I, and before their restitution in 1947 the editors made fairly good photographs that are now an important part of the material basis of the edition. Each volume of the letter series (VIA) contains Euler’s correspondence with one or more of his contemporaries, presented in a chronological order. Up to the present day, four volumes of the correspondence have been published, in addition to an inventory of all known letters to and from Euler, including short summaries and useful information about the date, language and location of the existing copies, and former publication. Four more volumes are in progress and will be published in 2016 or 2017. The remaining letters that are not intended for publication in the printed volumes are planned to be made available in an online edition.
W artykule przedstawiono historię i stan obecny wydań dzieł zebranych Leonharda Eulera (1707–1783). Po kilku nieudanych inicjatywach edytorskich, podjętych w XIX wieku, w 1907 roku przystąpiono do wydania drukowanych prac Eulera. Edycję podzielono na trzy serie: seria I: Matematyka (29 tomów); seria II: Mechanika i astronomia (31 tomów); seria III: Fizyka i inne prace (12 tomów). Po licznych perturbacjach, m.in. związanych z wybuchami kolejnych wojen światowych i problemami ekonomicznymi, publikacja dzieł drukowanych w łącznej liczbie 72 tomów zbliża się do końca. Brakuje tylko dwóch tomów o rachunku zaburzeń w astronomii. Do publikacji serii IV (rękopisy i korespondencja) przystąpiono w 1967 roku. W przedsięwzięcie zaangażowały się szwajcarska i radziecka akademie nauk. Ten wspólny projekt koncentruje się na edycji korespondencji Eulera, która zawiera blisko 3000 listów, spośród których prawie 1000 napisał sam Euler. Adresatami jego listów byli m.in. słynni matematycy z XVIII wieku, tacy jak Jean le Rond d’Alembert, Alexis Clairaut i rodzina Bernoullich, ale również wiele mniej znanych osób, z którymi Euler korespondował na rozmaite tematy. Wydanie rękopisów zostało odłożone na późniejszy okres. Poważnym problemem było znalezienie i sfinansowanie pracy odpowiednich redaktorów, którzy byli w stanie czytać stare manuskrypty po francusku, łacinie i po niemiecku oraz byli zaznajomieni z historią, kulturą i nauką w XVIII wieku. W ciągu ostatnich 50 lat redaktorzy zebrali kopie lub skany większości zachowanych listów Eulera. Oryginalne listy adresowane do Eulera Rosyjska Akademia Nauk udostępniła przed I wojną światową grupie wydawniczej ze Szwajcarii. Jeszcze przed ich restytucją w 1947 roku, redaktorzy wykonali dobrej jakości fotograficzne kopie, które dzisiaj są istotną podstawą wydania. Na każdy z tomów listów (VIA) składa się korespondencja Eulera z jedną lub kilkoma osobami , do których były adresowane jego listy; wszystkie zostały zamieszczone w porządku chronologicznym. Do dzisiaj ukazały się cztery tomy korespondencji wraz z wykazem wszystkich znanych listów adresowanych do Eulera oraz przez niego wysyłanych. W wykazie znajdziemy krótkie podsumowanie i przydatne informacje na temat daty, języka, lokalizacji istniejących kopii i wcześniejszych publikacji. Cztery kolejne tomy są przygotowywane do druku i zostaną wydane w 2016 lub 2017 roku. Planowane jest udostępnienie w internetowym wydaniu pozostałych listów, których nie pomieszczono w wersji drukowanej.

This article is an attempt to discuss and analyse a fairy tale The Lilac Forest (Liliowy Bór, Krakow 2009) by Adam Szafraniec – a writer, poet, composer, founder of the artistic group The Fairy Band (Baśniowa Kapela) and the Publishing house White Boat (Biała Łódka). This multidimensional story for the youngest readers was presented in the article in the context of other achievements of the author, whose work is characterized by an explicit syncretism of the epics, poetry, and drama. The inspiration to write The Lilac Forest was found in the history of Brian Chlebowski (1998–2005) – a six-year-old boy, who had saved his father and tens residents of one house in Lodz from death in flames. The educational significance of the book is emphasized by the complementary music album by Adam Szafraniec, Friends of the Lilac Forest (Przyjaciele z Liliowego Boru), which contains the author’s project for the activities for children in the field of prevention and promotion of security. The Lilac Forest has received an honorary patronage of the World for Kids Foundation and Polish Resuscitation Council.

The authors discuss the possibilities of applying the law of proximity as one of the categories of gestalt psychology to describe the social communication. The first part considers the mutual determinants of sensory and cognitive processes, including the phenomenon of cognitive penetrability and the phenomenon of semantic priming. In the following parts, the authors show how the law of proximity is implemented in various types of discourses. In visual communication (especially in film and photography), the law of proximity is the basis of collage editing. The authors describe the principles by which semantic inference is made in such discourses. The law of proximity also significantly influences the processing of information in speech. In poetic texts, the compactness of the line sequence is based on this principle, i.e. what R. Jakobson defined as the transfer of equivalence from the selection axis to the combination axis. In artistic, journalistic or rhetorical texts, the proximity of words in the text contributes to the emergence of semantic implications, i.e. allusive meanings.

W artykule podejmujemy próbę oceny współczesnych propozycji odmłodzenia czasu powstania perykopy Wj 17,8-16. Sposób prezentacji stosunku Jhwh do Amalekitów, wskazanie ich jako wzorcowego wroga, a potem także role, jakie odgrywają w tym tekście laska Boga, Mojżesz, Aaron, Chur i Jozue, pozwalają sądzić, że mamy do czynienia z tekstem powstałym w trakcie łączenia ze sobą Pięcioksięgu i ksiąg historycznych.
The article tries to evaluate the contemporary proposal of reading Ex 17,8-16. The way of the presentation of a relation between Amalekites and Jhwh tells us that Amalekites are the model enemies of Israel. Moreover, the role of the rod of God, Moses, Aaron, Hur and Joshua let us think that the text had been developed when the traditions of Pentateuch and the historical books of the Old Testament were combined together.

Studia Neo(Latina) rediviva. A Few Remarks on and Postulates for Neo-Latin studiesThe main aim of the paper is to present the major perspectives on some of the most important issues related to contemporary neo-Latin studies. Their status as an autonomous discipline independent from classical philology is still an object of many contemporary disputes and controversies among the philologists and historians of literature, philosophy (ideas) or culture. One promoter of neo-Latin studies in Poland, Maria Cytowska, claimed that these studies are a branch derived from classical philology and aimed at neo-Latin literature flourishing in Europe from the fourteenth century until nowadays. According to this view, strongly related to the estimation and hierarchisation of both disciplines, neo-Latin studies appear to be subordinated to their – metaphorically speaking– ‘older sister’, namely classical philology. The question concerning the perspectives in studies on neo-Latin texts is always involved in a much more complicated question about their disciplinary status and boundaries.The Renaissance, or the initial period in the history of early modern Europe, also has great significance for the evolution of Latin. Humanists were interested in the rebirth of the stylistic models that they rediscovered in the books of ancient writers, especially Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Horace, and Livy. As Ann Moss says, it was a Latin “language turn,” a kind of radical reorientation in thinking about Latin. The main object of their observations and interests was language in use, analysed in a wide context (grammatical, rhetorical, and logical) and applied to academic debates, religious polemics, and the art of interpretation. The philological activity of Renaissance humanists (editions, translations, and commentaries of ancient authors) is considered as the inauguration of neo-Latin culture.Neo-Latin studies, both interdisciplinary and comparative, could be currently a great chance for the revival of classical philology, whose role and significance in the Polish educational system seems to be increasingly marginalised. There are three main fields of studies on neo-Latin literature: monographic researches on neo-Latin authors (e.g. Kochanowski, Szymonowic or Sarbiewski), critical editions of neo-Latin texts, and their translations from Latin into vernacular languages with appropriate commentaries. The studies mentioned above should be practised simultaneously, we believe, to give us a better and more comprehensive understanding of early modern culture in Europe.This text discusses various possibilities for conducting research concentrated primarily on literary culture in early modern Europe. It brings consideration of issues such as: literary criticism in neo-Latin studies, various aspects of working on critical editions of texts written in Latin, translation studies associated with a variety of methodological approaches (hermeneutics, semiotics, structuralism, deconstruction, cultural studies), and competences – both linguistic and philological – of a perfect neo-Latinist. The paper is treated by its authors as a reference point for further discussions and investigations on neo-Latin culture in early modern Europe and one of its intrinsic parts, namely Poland.

In 2019, Wojciech Tygielski published a new book, the fruit of in-depth research on the relations between early modern Poland-Lithuania and Italy, and on the Italian settlement within the borders of the Commonwealth. The purpose of this discussion article is to present the biography of Giovanni Battista Jacobelli as an original narrative resulting from an unconventional methodological approach, and more broadly, as a significant example of contemporary biographical writing. Particular attention is paid to the numerous digressions that appear in the narrative, here considered a deliberate methodological procedure aimed at filling the gaps created by the relatively poor primary sources which constitute the basis of the research. Moreover, the relevance of the reviewed study from the point of view of the present day is raised, as the reviewed book prompts making comparisons between historical reality and modern-day experiences, and reflecting on the permanence of certain social phenomena. The discussion article also contains comments on the extensive source edition contained in the appendix to the reviewed book. The article challenges the author’s approach to presenting the early modern Italian correspondence to the reader, and to the degree of required modernisation.

The article deals with the use of majuscule in religious terms in the context of editing the unfinished typescript of Stanisław Baczyński’s Propozycje. Nowa kultura – nowa cywilizacja. The author spelled the words such as Kościoł (as an institution, a population of worshippers), Boży, Chrystusowy (as possessive adjectives) inconsistently – once in uppercase, once in lowercase (the latter more frequently). The author of the article (and the editor of Baczyński’s work) analyzes orthographic norms, both present ones and those contemporary with Baczyński, and on this basis decides to leave unchanged the spelling inconsistencies in religion-related words. These inconsistencies are considered a result of the clash between the atheist worldview and the repressive function of orthography, and at the same time a proof of the author’s linguistic struggle, telling a lot not only about the creative process, but also about the idea of the work.
Artykuł podejmuje problem używania majuskuły w nazwach religijnych, w kontekście pracy edytorskiej nad niedokończonym maszynopisem Stanisława Baczyńskiego zatytułowanym Propozycje. Nowa kultura – nowa cywilizacja. Autor zapisywał słowa takie jak Kościoł (w znaczeniu instytucji, ogółu wiernych), Boży, Chrystusowy (jako przymiotniki dzierżawcze) niekonsekwentnie – raz dużą, raz małą literą (z przewagą stosowania minuskuły). Autorka artykułu (jednocześnie edytorka rozprawy Baczyńskiego) analizuje dzisiejsze, a także współczesne Baczyńskiemu normy ortograficzne i na tej podstawie podejmuje decyzję o pozostawieniu niekonsekwencji w zapisie słów związanych z religią. Uważa je bowiem za rezultat zderzenia ateistycznego światopoglądu z represywną funkcją ortografii, a jednocześnie za dowód językowych zmagań autora, wiele mówiący nie tylko o procesie tworzenia, ale też o idei dzieła.

The late Rev. Mieczysław Jacek Brzozowski is an important figure of Polish pastoral theology with homiletics as his specialty. His research and didactic work that was done in the Lublin circle considerably influenced the shape of Polish homiletics in the 20th century. The present discussion is a result of editorial study of Rev. Brzozowski’s school-leaving examination certificate. This means that it is a study of a document containing various kinds of information that may allow looking at it from the angle of the times in which it was issued. And first of all it may allow learning about the document itself – about its contents and its form. So this is not a historical study—there are no descriptions or interpretations of facts. It may only serve historians as an aid. Editorial work that has been done on the basis of the analyzed document seems to be a valuable complement of the knowledge of Rev. Brzozowski himself, as well as of Polish education in the middle of the 20th century. The document that only has one copy has been recorded in the form of an academic study. In this way its contents may be accessible to many potential recipients.

Finding a niche journal for the submission of an academic paper can sometimes be a challenge for authors, and finding the right choice may involve a series of submissions and rejections. Emails from editors and journals related to the submission or rejection of a paper should be strictly related to these purposes, i.e., to inform authors that their paper has been received, outline the subsequent editorial handling or peer reviewer steps in the former, or the reasons for rejection in the latter. This paper highlights four cases of - in the author’s opinion - the abuse of such emails by COPE member journals and publishers (Emerald Publishing Ltd., Springer Nature, Elsevier, Wiley) to advertise for-profit English revision and editing services and/or conferences, as a way to maximize these emails for a dual purpose, namely to inform authors of submission-related aspects (valid communication) while also trying to obtain clients and thus business for non-submission-related aspects (invalid communication). Since an abuse of email-based communication for non-academic purposes is an ethics-related matter, there is a need for systematic research of this potential abuse of emails from both COPE member and non-member journals.

Stopklatka jest fragmentem filmu, obrazu ruchomego, który został (celowo) zatrzymany podczas projekcji, najczęściej na krótką chwilę, w konkretnym celu artystycznym. Stopklatka jest specyficznym elementem wyrazu w kinematografii. Stoi bowiem na pograniczu starej formy fotograficznego zatrzymania obrazu w kadrze i malarskiej ramie dzieła sztuki oraz jest wypadkową filmowanej, ruchomej rzeczywistości. Zamierzeniem artykułu jest ustalenie definicji stopklatki i prześledzenie sposobów jej wykorzystania w kinematografii.
Freeze frame is a still picture in the course of a movie or television film, made by running a series of identical frames or by stopping a reel or videotape at one desired frame. It is a peculiar element of the word in the cinematography. He is standing on the border of old form of photographic stopping the image and in the painting frame of the works of art and is a resultant of filmed, movable reality. Establishing the definition freeze frame is a purpose of the article and of portraying ways for it of using in the cinematography.
