    As the importance of preserving indigenous languages has been highlighted in different fora and numerous contexts, the Arctic appears to be no exception in this regard. The vitality and sustainability of Arctic indigenous languages pervade the discourse on the polar region and lie at the core of the Arctic Indigenous Language Vitality Initiative. To explore the complexity of the endeavor, this conceptual paper analyzes the framing of Arctic indigenous language preservation in selected academic publications as well as institutional documents. Since the use of biomorphic metaphors in the context of language preservation raises numerous doubts regarding their socio-political implications, this paper attempts to address this issue from the perspective of ecolinguistics perceived as both analytical and conceptual lenses to demonstrate that its three complementary strands of research may help bridge the nature-culture divide in general and provide an integrated approach to the preservation of Arctic indigenous languages in particular.

    Opis:
    One of the basic documents defining, among others, language learning, teaching, and assessment within the EU is the CEFR (2001). Since the moment of its first publication, many political and social changes have occurred which necessitated the reshaping of general language teaching policy to meet the new conditions. There also appeared new theoretical reflections on the process of language learning and language use. Through enhanced mobility a remarkable number of European citizens have become plurilingual, living in multilingual environments. On the other hand, new insights into the process of language learning and teaching accentuated the need for the departure from monolingual approaches in favour of translingual practices (Canagarajah 2013; García & Li 2014). The objective of this article is to present the implications derived from a translingual instinct (Li 2011) for teaching an additional foreign language to plurilingual students. The author of the article derives his reflections from the theoretical underpinnings of multilingualism, his own research on translanguaging and the revised version of the CEFR (2018).

    The paper offers a study of word-medial clusters in English and Spanish according to parameters established by Beats-and-Binding Phonology [e.g. Dziubalska-Kołaczyk 1995, 2002, 2009]. The discussion shows that a syllable-less explanation allows provides insights which are not evident in syllable-based paradigms. Clusters are evaluated and discussed in two groups: Spanish and English doubles and triples (plus more). The discussion also shows that B&B Phonology is compatible with an ecological perspective towards language study.

    The contribution examines how the paradigms of historical, conflict, contact and ecolinguistics respectively shed different light on the relation between German and French as neighbouring languages. Historical linguistics sees the neighbourly language contacts as the result of bellicose and societal interferences; conflict linguistics centres on tensions and dominance behaviour between governments and linguistic enclaves or linguistic minorities. Contact linguistics takes account of the fact that any change in neighbourly language situations could also be seen as the result of conflict-free societal changes. Ecolinguistics follows this perspective on frame conditions – instead of historically important events – still more thoroughly, and its research focus on „linguistic landscape“ exposes bilingual landscapes as compensation for the loss of bilingualism. The survey shows after all that conflict linguistics is not the only fertile description of neighbourly language relations.

    The objective of the article is to analyze the attitudes of foreign language teachers towards students’ mother tongues or heritage languages, as migrant students to the city of Gdańsk, Poland, use them as a compensation strategy in formal language learning. On the basis of a survey methodology, the author will try to explore language teacher beliefs regarding the perception of the coexistence and the use of other languages (including Polish) in mainstream FL education and attempt to compile good practices in this regard, reported by the teachers surveyed. Referring to his earlier research (Lankiewicz 2013, 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021), the author hypothesizes that language teachers manifesting higher levels of critical language awareness will be more prone to draw upon students’ linguistic repertoires in the education processes, while others will suppress any form of intercomprehension, code-switching or language meshing.

    Celem artykułu jest rozważenie miejsca studiów tłumaczeniowych pośród innych narracji badawczych sięgających po retorykę globalnego kryzysu środowiskowego. Na tle ich dokonań dziedzina zajmująca się wzajemnymi relacjami języków oraz literatur wydawać się może zbyt antropocentryczna, stąd konieczne jest przeformułowanie jej podejścia na potrzeby nowego, politycznie zaangażowanego sposobu rozumienia komunikacji międzykulturowej i intersemiotycznej. Punkt wyjścia artykułu stanowią idee translacyjnej ekologii Michaela Cronina, opracowane w oparcio refleksję antropocenu oraz rozważania ekolingwistyczne. Głównym zamierzeniem autorki jest stworzenie nowego języka wartości, odmiennego od systemu wartościowania kapitałocenu. W konkluzji przedstawione są wskazania dla praktyki eko‑przekładu, możliwe do zastosowania zarówno w analizie istniejących tłumaczeń, jak i w formie translatorskich interwencji.
    The article considers the place of translation studies among other scholarly narratives which are eager to employ the rhetoric of the global environmental crisis. Against the background of its achievements, the field of languages and literature may seem to be too anthropocentric; hence it is necessary to reformulate its approach for the sake of the current, politically engaged way of construing cross-cultural and intersemiotic communication. The article builds upon Michael Cronin’s translation ecology and elaborates further on Anthropocene thinking and ecolinguistic considerations. The author intends to establish a new language of values that would differ from capitalism’s value system. The conclusion presents recommendations for the practice of eco‑translation that could be followed both in the examination of existing translations and in the form of translation interventions.

    W artykule przedstawiono konieczność wprowadzenia tematyki ekolingwistycznej do nauczania języka ojczystego. Na przykładzie postów i wpisów na Instagramie dokonanych przez czeskich, polskich i słowackich influencerów pokazano, że techniki manipulacyjne przekraczają granice krajów i języków. Jeśli przyjmiemy tezę, że manipulacja jest w znacznej mierze zjawiskiem nieekologicznym, tj. zagrażającym życiu większych ekosystemów, to konieczna jest reakcja szkoły na tę sytuację, głównie dlatego, że dzieci i młodzież to jedna z grup szczególnie podatnych na zagrożenia.
    The paper presents the necessity of implementing ecolinguistic topics into L1 teaching. It takes Instagram posts of Czech, Polish and Slovak influencers as an example and shows that manipulation techniques overreach the boundaries of countries and languages. If we accept the thesis that manipulation is dominantly a non-ecological phenomenon, which threatens the life of wider ecosystems, the reaction of school is inevitable, especially because children and youth form a highly vulnerable group.

    El artículo se propone realizar un análisis sociopragmático del discurso medioambiental de la prensa española tomando como base una serie de textos del año 2019 y comienzos del 2020, así como consultas lexicográficas en la Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu) y diferentes diccionarios. Asimismo, se analizan las peculiaridades discursivas dentro del análisis crítico del discurso que funcionan en el campo de la ecolingüística. En concreto, se hace un esbozo del nivel léxico-semántico y funciones pragmáticas con una atención especial a los deícticos personales. Por último, destacamos el vínculo entre el discurso medioambiental con otros discursos en el marco de la teoría de la interdiscursividad.
    The article proposes to carry out a sociopragmatic analysis of the environmental discourse of the Spanish press based on texts from 2019 and early 2020, lexicographical consultations in Fundéu as well as different dictionaries. We also analize discursive peculiarities in critical discourse analysis that work in the field of ecolinguistics. In particular, an outline of the lexical-semantic level and pragmatic functions is made, with special attention paid to the personal deictic markers. Finally, we highlight the link between environmental discourse with other discourses within the framework of the theory of interdiscursivity.

    Idee powstające na styku dwóch nauk: ekologii i lingwistyki są od trzech dekad z ożywieniem dyskutowane przez językoznawcow na całym świecie. Jednym z nurtów badawczych, powstałym na początku lat 90. ubiegłego stulecia, jest ekolingwistyka krytyczna, ktora opiera się na założeniu, że język jest częścią ekosystemu i jako taki wpływa na stan środowiska naturalnego. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie słów-kluczy (ich kognicji, konotacji, kolokacji) występujących w polskim dyskursie ekologicznym wraz z krytycznym komentarzem ekolingwistycznym dotyczącym problemów językowych w wyrażaniu i nazywaniu różnych zagadnień z zakresu ekologii. Słowa-klucze zostały wyabstrahowane z popularnonaukowego słownika tematycznego "1000 słów o ekologii i ochronie środowiska�" Adama Mierzwińskiego na podstawie kryterium ilościowego.
    Different types of links between language and ecology have been discussed by the linguists all over the world since the last three decades. In the early 90s, a new research subfield was established – Critical Ecolinguistics, which is based on the opinion that languages are elements of ecosystems and, among other factors, influence on the state of the natural environment. The aim of the article is to present key-words functioning in Polish ecological discourse (its cognitions, collocations, connotations) with the ecolinguistic critical commentary concerning linguistic problems in expressing and naming different ecological issues. Key-words were abstracted from the popular-scientific, thematic dictionary “1000 words about Ecology and Nature Protection” by Adam Mierzwiński on the basis of the quantitative criterion.

    Opis:
    Capitalizing on the ecological approach to language learning (van Lier, 2004; Kramsch, 2008) and the conceptualization of language as a local practice (Pennycook, 2010) as well as languaging (Jørgensen, 2008), accounting for the continuity of linguistic phenomena rather than a discriminatory perception of linguistic properties, we intend to delve into the problem of linguistic hybridity as a sign of L2 learner identity. A direct inspiration for the study, as exemplified in the title, is the concept of metrolingualism (Otsuji, Pennycook, 2010), which offers a potential to be very informative for the study of identity issues inscribed in language. Metrolingualism connotes linguistic hybridity, which refers to something unnatural, untypical, not conforming to the norm. Positing the continuity of language use and symbolic competence (Kramsch, Whiteside, 2008), we assume after van Lier (2004) that language is not a fixed code but socially constructed entity which mingles with personal experiences shaped by social context and activates power-related issues in language use. The aim of the paper is to delve into discursive practices of students learning/using more than one L2 in the educational setting. An examination of their narratives and their languaging about language (Swain, 2006) discloses how they position themselves as L2 language users.

    This article aims to create parallels between the Italian Questione della lingua and modern-day debates on linguistic globalization. In doing so, it identifies some important commonalities between the two phenomena which, though of different magnitude and occurring in different historical circumstances, are quite analogous in nature. By highlighting the important nexus between language and culture, this analysis observes linguistic standardization as a process that can have deleterious consequences on cultural diversity. By considering the ascension of a Florentine-based variety to the status of national language in Italy a process encouraged by hegemonic aspirations rather than motivated by objectives of communicative efficiency, this work attempts to show how linguistic standardization is not always beneficial, and that, instead of having levelling or equalizing effects it can, instead, continue to perpetrate oppressive trends. The article, though characterized by eco-critical undertones, weighs both the risks and benefits of the various possible outcomes of the need for linguistic globalization: the designation of an artificial language (namely, Esperanto) as a global lingua franca; the takeover of an existing natural language (such as English) or of modified versions of natural languages (Basic English, Latino sine flexione); the deculturalization/dehistoricization of an existing language (Anna Wierzbicka’s research on Natural Semantic Metalanguage). By exploring and acknowledging the aftermath of the Italian Questione della lingua, and comparing the Questione to current debates on linguistic globalization, one can make important generalizations and observations on such processes and their potential consequences.
    L’obiettivo di questo articolo è quello di tracciare dei paralleli tra la questione della lingua italiana e gli odierni dibattiti che riguardano la globalizzazione linguistica. L’analisi identifica delle similitudini fra i due fenomeni i quali, nonostante siano di dimensioni diverse e appartenenti a periodi storici diversi, presentano una simile natura. Evidenziando l’importante nesso fra lingua e cultura, la presente osserva la standardizzazione linguistica come un processo che può avere conseguenze deleterie sulla diversità culturale. Considerando l’ascesa della variante fiorentina al trono di lingua nazionale un processo motivato da pretese egemoniche piuttosto che dall’efficacia comunicativa, l’articolo tenta di dimostrare che la standardizzazione linguistica non è sempre vantaggiosa e che, piuttosto che offrire risultati che incoraggino l’eguaglianza può, piuttosto, perpetuare delle attitudini oppressive preesistenti. Quest’analisi, pur se caratterizzata da sottotoni di natura ecolinguistica, valuta i rischi e i benefici dei possibili esiti del bisogno di una globalizzazione linguistica: l’elezione di una lingua ausiliare (ad es., l’esperanto) come lingua franca globale; la presa del potere da parte di una lingua naturale (come l’inglese) o di versioni modificate di una lingua naturale (il Basic English o il latino sine flexione); la deculturalizzazione/destoricizzazione di una lingua esistente (riferendosi alla ricerca di Anna Wierzbicka sul metalinguaggio semantico naturale). Riconoscendo ed esplorando i risultati della “questione della lingua italiana” e comparandola ai dibattiti odierni sulla globalizzazione linguistica, si possono fare importanti generalizzazioni su questo tipo di processi e sulle possibili conseguenze da essi causate.
