Opis:
During archaeological supervision carried out in 2010 and 2011 around John Paul II Square in Ciechanów remains of the building complex of the mid-market-square block were excavated. The scale of the research is unprecedented among historic towns founded in Mazovia. Relics of the foundations of the brick town hall, the weigh or the cropping house as well as a series of the relics of light wooden structures – probably stalls or butcheries, forming a quadrangle of the compact building block in the central part of the square, were recorded. The study of portable finds indicates that the town hall and the accompanying buildings were probably erected in the 16th century and they ceased to exist after mid-17th century.

Opis:
When he left France in July 1624 to go to England, on young Louis XIII’s order, Antoine Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis d’Effiat, began his very first diplomatic trip. Despite his functions, the Marquis d’Effiat never accomplished any diplomatic mission of any kind. However, a few years earlier, he negotiated the marriage of Honoré d’Albert, a Duke of Luynes’s brother. Thus, in 1624, he was entrusted with the delicate mission to bring England and France together through the marriage of Henrietta-Maria of France, the King’s sister, to Charles, Prince of Wales. This is an extraordinary embassy and the dispatches of the ambassador have been preserved as well as the replies of Louis XIII and the Secretary of State, Antoine de Lomenie. This allows us to observe an evolution both in Effiat’s account of his actions and the content of the points negotiated, and the way his work was staged. Despite his age, the Marquis d’Effiat was new to diplomacy. He was familiar with the royal French court but his ignorance about England and diplomatic practices raises questions about the King’s choice of sending him across the Channel. This ignorance of diplomatic customs includes negotiation strategies, but also the body language that an ambassador must adopt to serve the interests of his master and extensively described in 16th century treatises on ambassadors. This article aims to compare the ambassador’s discourse with the diplomatic accomplishment. The interest of this embassy, besides its political and religious stakes, is that it makes it possible to observe its fears of error and procrastination through the correspondence of the marquis.

Opis:
James II inherited the throne from his elder brother Charles only because there was not any male heir. Even the Parliament wanted to exclude him from succession, that was the exclusion crisis of 1679-1681. The Tory propaganda published Sir Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha to argue for the primogeniture principle, i.e. for the James’s title to the throne. That work introduced patriarchalism in which overlap the concepts of family and society and the authority of a father and the monarch. Therefore the monarch as the father of the nation ruled over the society that was considered to be a great family. He demanded unconditional obedience from the society just as the father demands it from the members of his family. Since Sir Robert Filmer’s name was connected to James’s right to the throne and to the conservative royalist Tory propaganda, my incentive was to examine whether James himself applied patriarchalism and the Filmer’s concepts in his political writings. This is the law (norms) in books if we apply the terms of the law in effect to the past. However, the aim of this article is to compare these norms with the practice found in the James’s declarations, proclamations, and deeds. The result of this comparison would be the law in action. Thus, the aim of this comparison is to reveal patriarchalism in James’s writings and after that to examine whether any characteristics of it can be found in his deeds and decrees of his administration. I mean especially three deeds: his coronation, the cure of the King’s evil (scrofula), and the practice of giving mercy to victims. Among the decrees I mean particularly the decrees issued during putting out the revolts against his reign. In the first two cases he was successful, however, he lost the throne to William of Orange and was expelled from it.

Opis:
In the collegiate churches in Warsaw and Łowicz (two particularly important residential cities of the Republic of Poland in the modern era), in the 18th century, chapels were erected for the exhibition of late Gothic crucifixes, famous for their graces. The chapels were distinguished by remarkable architectural forms and innovative artistic programs. Both were built on the extensions of the northern aisles and were under the care of chapters, although their creation was financed from funds provided by powerful patrons. In the case of Łowicz, the construction was the fulfillment of the volition expressed in the will of Primate Adam Ignacy Komorowski, who assigned this part of the temple for his mausoleum. In Warsaw, the the right to patronage was passed on to successive families – the patronage was granted to the Szembek and Branicki families, among others. The features connecting both investments were also: the connections of both collegiate chapters and the special status of said churches, associated with the most important people in the Republic of Poland – the king (and, in a broader sense, the Seym and court circles) and the primate, i.e. the interrex. Although the chapels’ architecture was developed almost half a century apart, one can see the mutual dependence of the forms used. The interiors boast even more analogies because the Warsaw chapel, built in the second decade of the 18th century, was transformed at the initiative of Jan Klemens Branicki in the early 1860s – while the mausoleum in Łowicz was being built. Probably both buildings employed the workshop of the Warsaw architect Jakub Fontana. In both chapels, influences of palace architecture are visible, manifested in the lightness of forms, rococo style and colors based on combining white with gold. The connection to residential interiors was enhanced especially by crimson wall coverings introduced by Fontana in the present St. John cathedral. The presented analysis, based on archival queries and in situ observations, made it possible to clarify the findings so far, as well as to show the construction process and transformations of the discussed objects. A look at their architectural form and decor details made it possible to identify sources of inspiration, probable contractors and to confirm the relationship between two particularly important examples of 18th-century collegiate chapels.

Paper presented the results of excavations conducted on the site Čierne zeme at Zvolen (Slovakia). Within the trench a segment of Hron river paleochannel was uncovered. It was partially filled with cultural sediments, which were naturally accumulated as a result of undercutting the banks of Hron during the periods of water surge. The trunks discovered within the sediments were radiocarbon dated to the time span between 2470 and 2280 BC. Besides them cultural layer yielded also some stone artifacts and collection of pottery fragments. The second one represent mainly the cultural traditions (e.g. Makó-Kosihy-Čaka culture) from the turn of Eneolithic and Bronze Age periods, what corresponds well with the radiocarbon dating of wood. Described site is another settlement point dated to this period in the Zvolen Basin. Younger group of pottery originates from Modern Era (16th-17th century AD) and may be connected with existence of communication route running along Hron river.

The translations and polemical texts that make up the Tyndale Corpus are filled with linguistic buried treasure: lexical innovations, syntactic archaisms, metalinguistic com- mentary, and features related to language and dialect prejudice. The use of computer corpus analysis can reveal and illuminate what makes Tyndale different from other writers of his time, and why he is so important to the history of English and the modern religious register. Examining the patterns hidden in his work does not prevent us from appreciat- ing the beauty of his writing as some literary scholars might suggest. Instead, it al- lows us to better understand the approach he took to his work. This paper summa- rizes and exemplifies Tyndale’s contributions to English historical linguistics. The methodology involves reviewing previous scholarly assessments of Tyndale’s work, examining in detail his particular lexical and syntactic choices using text and cor- pus computer software, and, most especially, allowing William Tyndale to speak for himself.

Opis:
This article examines the changing approach towards the representation of the senses in 17th-century Flemish painting. These changes are related to the cultural politics and courtly culture of the Spanish sovereigns of the Southern Netherlands, the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. The 1617–18 painting-series of the Five Senses by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens as well as the pendant paintings on the subject are analyzed in relation to the iconography of the five senses, and in regard to Flemish genre themes. In this context, the excess of objects, paintings, scientific instruments, animals, and plants in the Five Senses are read as an expansion of the iconography of the senses as well as a reference to the courtly material culture of the Archdukes. Framing the senses as part of a cultural web of artifacts, Brueghel and Rubens refer both to elite lived experience and traditional iconography. The article examines the continuity between the iconography of the senses from 1600 onwards, as developed by Georg Pencz, Frans Floris, and Maerten de Vos, and the representation of the senses in the series. In addition, the article shows how certain elements in the paintings are influenced by genre paintings of the courtly company and collector’s cabinet, by Frans Francken, Lucas van Valckenborch and Louis de Caullery. Through the synthesis of these two traditions the subject of the five senses is reinvented in a courtly context.

Opis:
The article examines the major forms and shifts in the development of antemurale christianitatis rhetoric in the 17th – to mid-18th-century Ukrainian chronicles. The question of why and in which form the Ukrainian chroniclers did or did not use the image of the bulwark of Christianity remains the key issue. The chapter is divided into two parts: the first one deals with the bastion images in Ukrainian chronicles as a response to the European and Polish-Lithuanian bastion rhetoric; the second one is devoted to the descriptions of fortified cities and monasteries as Christian ramparts (mainly, Bratslav, Kamianets’-Podils’kyi, L’viv, and Uman’, monasteries in Mezhyhiria and Trakhtemyriv) in chronicles.

Opis:
The wergild as a financial punishment for husband killing survived in Prussia until the mid-18th century, but the general rule was that the perpetrators of husband killing were sentenced to death. The reason why the wergild survived for such a long time in Prussia was the fact that courts applied the Chelmno law, according to which the wergild was recognized by tradition and also found in subsequent registers of the Chelmno law. At the beginning of the early modern period the wergild could apply only in case of assassinations committed in self-defense or by accident; deliberate crimes were subject to the law of retaliation. Yet, the law of retaliation could not be applied in relation to groups. With time the wergild could not be used out of court and the law of retaliation was abolished. The next step restricting the use of the wergild was the fact that it was to be applied in case of unintentional or accidental homicides; moreover, in case of killing in self-defence the perpetrator was exempt from the wergild. It was the court that passed a sentence of the wergild, but in cases of reconciliation the sentence was passed by other arbitration bodies. The wergild was allowed mainly among noblemen, which was in accordance with the Polish law of the time. The circle of people entitled to the wergild was reduced to the closest agnate, while in case of husband killing it applied only to the perpetrator. The wergild was no longer shared with the authorities; it was only the judge who received the fee referred to as multa. The value of the wergild was determined by the rank of the office held by the assassinated person. Moreover, the wergild constituted a kind of financial unit used to establish the value of fines and compensatory damages. Apart from the compensation in the form of financial gratification, the wergild constituted the indemnification for physical injury or damage to honour. The latter could also entail some additional punishment e.g. the act of submission. Until the mid-17th century the tradition of bloody retaliation (vendetta) was practiced at least among the nobility. It was illegal and punished by death sentence. Its alternative continued to be the possibility of settlement. The retaliation was limited only to the perpetrator of the homicide.

Although Grodno Castle (Kynsburg), located in the southern part of the Wałbrzyskie Mountains, due to its turbulent history has been popular since the $19^{th}$ century, this fact has never translated into the level of advancement of the scientific studies devoted to it. Until recently, scientific research, especially excavations, was carried out to a very limited extent. The aim of the article is to present and discuss the results of archaeological research conducted in 2017-2019 and its correlation with the knowledge provided to us by written sources. For this purpose, the most important historical events related to the functioning of Grodno Castle are briefly discussed. Then, the results of analyzes of the nature and relative chronology of the stratigraphic layers forming the embankment located on the castle zwinger and lying in the courtyard of the upper castle are presented, along with summarizing the conclusions of the typological, morphological, chronological and comparative analyzes of the archaeological finds discovered during the excavations. As a result of these activities, in the case of the layers forming the embankment located on the zwinger, 6 phases of anthropogenic activity were distinguished, which were related to historical events, and an image of the material culture of the castle inhabitants and the changes taking place in it over more than seven centuries were obtained.

This article presents the influence of Albrecht Dürer’s art and the Cranach’s workshop on the art of Ducal Prussia and particularly on their participation in the creation of objects of art on the court of Albrecht Hohenzollern. Initially, the author discusses the impact of Martin Schongauer’s and Albrecht Dürer’s graphic art on the paintings in the Royal Prussia during before Reformation. The two examples comes from Frombork and Elbląg (Royal Prussia) and one of one from the church in Rychnowo (Ducal Prussia). Next the paper shows other examples of the presence of works of art by both artists at the court of Albrecht Hohenzollern, the influence of Wittenberg and Nuremberg on the early modern royal court created by Prince Albrecht. The paper presents the artistic education of local artists and objects of art made by many skilled craftsmen for Albrecht. All these activities, as shown, have created a modern manor house/court of renaissance ruler.

Opis:
The paper analyses the functioning of transhumanist and posthumanist motifs in Renaissance and Enlightenment utopias which invariably foreground the natural enhancement of human mental and physical capabilities not only by ideal social and political conditions, but also education, improved diet, healthy and moral lifestyle. New technologies and inventions may contribute to the comforts of life, but ultimately do not alter the traditional model of humanity. Occasionally introduced transhuman and posthuman creatures do not constitute models of the future development of humanity, functioning only as satirical elements, or as devices increasing the sensational appeal of the works in which they appear.

Opis:
The article analyses two methods from the scholarly oeuvre of a great Polish Croatian and Slavic studies scholar Joanna Rapacka (1939–2000). These two methods are very interesting and in a particular manner topical, especially in Croatian philology: due to a reconstruction of historical poetics and research of sources, and because of a deconstruction of national myths and national essentialism in literary historiography. These two approaches are closely linked in an attempt to understand an older, pre-modern literary culture in its original, epochal context.
