Opis:
The early medieval stronghold in Kalisz was established in the ninth century among the branches of meandering Prosna river. The stronghold's castle was located on the floodplain terrace of Prosna river at an altitude of 100-108 m asl. In the tenth and eleventh centuries numerous redevelopments within the town occurred. In the early thirteenth century, as a result of fightings among dukes, the stronghold was exposed to destruction. Long-term flooding (1221-1223) resulted in the change of the main Prosna river channel. Prosna no longer assured the settlement with defensive functions. The above, and subsequent invasion of duke Henry I the Bearded (Henryk Brodaty) on Zawodzie in 1233, determined moving the castle on a fluvial terrace, in today's center of Kalisz.

Opis:
In 2005, rescue excavations were carried out at site 22 (discovered a year earlier) in Głazów. Their aim was to record and explore the features visible in the high balk. Two of the examined features were the remains of smoking chambers (pits), and the third pit could be of an utility function. Based on the pottery sherds found inside, these features should be dated between the beginning of the 9th and the end of the 10th century. However, in the arable layer of the ground and on the surface of the site, there were mainly fragments of ceramics determined to the 12th – 13th centuries. This dating indicates the two-phase settlement of the early medieval site 22 in Głazów: the first phase – 9th – 10th (or the beginning of the 11th century); the second phase – 12th – 13th centuries. The village Głazów, which exists today, is a direct continuation of the settlement of the second phase.

The development of archaeological research justifies the need for re-appraising previous conclusions. In the case of the Bnin Lakes Basin (Wielkopolska), the research pertains to the settlement at the early stage of the early Middle Ages. Human settlement developed dynamically at phase B of the early Middle Ages. To date, settlement from phase A has not been discovered in the Basin. The same holds true for the basin of the central river Warta.

Opis:
At least 110 sites with finds of early medieval coins have been recorded so far in Silesia. These include 62 hoards, 29 graves, 22 settlements and 14 stray and undefined. Finds from Greater Poland were much more numerous, as in 2010 their number amounted to as many as 237, including about 160 hoards. The earliest Silesian finds of early medieval coins are dated to the first half of the 10thc. At the settlement in Wszemirów, 3 fragments of dirhams minted after 914 were found. The earliest find, coming from an unknown locality (Śląsk XIII), contained (apart from illegible fragments of dirhams) a small part of an English coin of Athelstan (924–939). Other deposits, containing exclusively Oriental coins are dated to after 942/3 (Śląsk XIV) and after 954 (Sośnica). West European coins are primarily German denars from the Bavarian- Swabian circle, and they appeared in assemblages dated to the 970s (Obiszów, Niemcza). Silesian hoards from the 10th c. also contained considerable numbers of Bohemian coins, cross denars, various German coins, a somewhat lower number of Danish half-bracteates, single English, Italian and French specimens, as well as Ancient Roman denars. Apart from coins, there were also ornaments and silver raw materials, sometimes blanks (usually strongly fragmented). The weight of these assemblages oscillates between c. 7 g to 1.140 g, while the average weight is c. 100–600 g. 10th c. hoards from Greater Poland represent at least 42 finds. The earliest ones appear as early as the second quarter of this century (e.g. Piwonice, Ochle, Gościejewice). Other ones are dated to the 950s and 960s. the earliest assemblages contain exclusively Oriental coins and jewellery. Earlier on in Silesia, that is, in the 950s, the first West European denars occur in deposits, apart from dirhams. Such denars come from Cologne and Bavaria (Kuźnica Czarnkowska, Grzybowo, Gwiazdowo). In somewhat later assemblages there are also Bohemian, English, Danish and Italian cross denars, Byzantine milliarenses, single Ancient Roman denars or French coins. However, the ratio of dirhams is still somewhat higher than in Silesia. Apart from coins, jewellery and silver raw materials occur, and they are less fragmented than in Silesia. The weight of Greater Poland’s deposits from this period is from c. 7 g to 15 kg of silver (Dzierżnica II), c. 200–600 g being the average range of weight.

Opis:
Saxony’s most impressive medieval monuments include about 200 strongholds, preserved in quite different conditions. They bear witness to a story that can be enlightened only fragmentarily from written sources. The assumption was that they were built in response to western aggression. In the meantime, however, they are considered to have served military, administrative and representative purposes as local centres of control. Many of them have taken damage by fire, which can be seen as evidence of very troubled times during the 10th and 11th centuries. These wars might have caused a decline in population, exposing the fertile lowlands to a desertification process no later than the second half of the 11th century. Some of the strongholds have fallen prey to soil improvement; some were built over or served as quarries for roads, bank fortifications and buildings. Civic engagement contributed to seeing the castles as landscape elements worth protecting. Strategic land acquisitions and high-profile campaigns were initiated at a time when state preservation was still in its infancy. Nevertheless, the destruction continues, reaching terrain cuts up to 3 cm, especially in high-yield agricultural landscapes. Achieving a change for the better will be a social task for years. A shift in the EU agricultural subsidies, considering ecological preservation as well as monument protection aspects, could be a linchpin.

The aim of the experiment was to confirm the hypothesis about the possibility of Scandinavian bead makers crafting complex mosaic glass beads. For this purpose, raw glass material and tools from archaeological sites were examined. Metal tools and glass mosaic canes were made, for the purpose of the experiment, based on archaeological finds. All the glass beads were made during the experiment on a specially constructed open hearth. As a result of the experiments, the possibility of making mosaic glass beads on an open hearth was confirmed. A theoretical and practical procedure for making complex glass beads has been proposed.

Opis:
During archaeological excavations in Poznań there were discovered a ducal palace, a chapel dated to the 10th century, and goldsmith’s workshop adjacent to them. In the layer of ashes at the bottom of the manufacture, there were fragments of gold found together with numerous glass beads and gems. Fourteen gems, made of rock crystal, agate, carnelian, milky chalcedony, garnet, were chosen for gemstone analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The study material is dominated by beads (12 samples, of which six is faceted and six globular), while two pyrope samples have the cabochon cut. It should be emphasized that the rock crystal gems in the collection are usually heptagonal. Majority of the Poznań collection is of high quality, which is a sign of an advanced grinding and faceting technology. Pyrope from the Poznań collection contains inclusions of apatite, rutile, quartz, and magnetite, identified with micro-Raman spectroscopy. A similar combination of inclusions was recognized in pyrope from deposits in Vestřev near Turnov (Bohemia), and hence it indicates that the artifacts from Poznań were made of the pyrope from those deposits. Considering inclusions in rock crystal artifacts from the Poznań collection it was assumed that the mineral was also of the Bohemian origin.

Opis:
IX w.), 2. Gród i przystań grodu (2. poł. IX w.–2. poł. X w.), 3. Wczesnośredniowieczny kompleks osadniczy: gród, podgrodzie i port podgrodzia (2. poł. X w.–poł. XII w.), 4. Ośrodek wczesnomiejski: gród, podgrodzie słowiańskie i port podgrodzia, podgrodzie niemieckie i Havening, osady otwarte (2. poł. XII w.–koniec 1. ćw. XIII w.), 5. Średniowieczne miasto podwójne: „dolne miasto”, „górne miasto” (koniec 1. ćw. XIII w.–8. dekada XIII w.), 6. Proces wykształcania się miasta średniowiecznego (8. dekada XIII w.–koniec 1. ćw. XIV w.).
The paper reconstructs the evolution of the urban growth of Szczecin between half of the 8th century and the beginning of the 14th century, basing on the interpretation of the available scientific literature on history and archeology of Szczecin, and on the method of planning analysis. A very important element of the description of urban structure of the early medieval Szczecin was a determination of the role and location of the port. The analysis of changes in the spatial layout of the city in the mentioned period allowed us to define the six successive stages of its development: 1. The open settlement on the Castle Hill and its’ haven (the 2nd half of the 8th century–the 2nd half of the 9th century), 2. The gord and its haven (the 2nd half of the 9th century–the 2nd half of the 10th century), 3. The early medieval urban complex: the gord, the slavic borough and its port (the 2nd half of the 10th century–half of the 12th century), 4. Townlike urban complex: the gord, the slavic borough and its port, German borough and its port Havening, open settlements (the 2nd half of the 12th century–the end of the first quarter of the 13th century), 5. The double city: “Lower town”, and “Upper town” (the end of the first quarter of the 13th century–the 8th decade of the 13th century), 6. The formation of the medieval city (8th decade of the 13th century–the end of the first quarter of the 14th century). The early medieval Szczecin was not growing simply in a linear manner, but it was developing in a stepwise manner, by attaching new, already spatially organized settlements. Such a model of an urban growth, consisting of the existence of “double” or even “multiple” cities, can be an interesting alternative for the development of contemporary urban areas, which are struggling with the phenomenon of “urban sprawl”. The presented concept is basing in many places on assumptions, resulting from logic of the settlement process, known from urban planning theory. Therefore, this work should be regarded as a research hypothesis, until finding new archaeological evidences will give a chance for its verification.

Great Moravian monuments have attracted special attention of both professionals and laypeoplefor a long time. In this paper we focus on only two of the Great Moravian sites studied at the Institute of Archaeology, Slovak Academy of Sciences (IA SAS ). One of the locations is Nitra, the former seat of Great Moravian dukes and Hungarian kings founded in 828. In the 9th century, the town was a large political and cultural centre. Relics from this period (such as remains of fortifications and sacral buildings) can be found on the castle hill and in the area of old military barracks situated in the foothills of Zobor. Unfortunately, some of the relics have been irreversibly lost due to the intense growth of the city and related construction activities. The second site is Bojná, with an agglomeration of five earth fortifications. The most significant of these is a twelve-hectare hillfort of Valy, where we have reconstructed or marked the most interesting historical constructions in situ. Here, visitors can see reconstructions of one of the gates, fragments of the impressive fortifications, and dwellings located inside the hillfort. In the village centre, they can also visit an archaeological museum. Each year, thanks to successful cooperation with local communities and representatives of municipalities, the sites and their history are revived during Nitra Days or the St. Cyril and Methodius Day

Opis:
Awls have been used for perforating various types of materials from the Paleolithic to the early medieval period, until they were replaced by their metal equivalents. Though the technology of the manufacture has changed, the form remained virtually the same, containing of a handle and a shaft. Stiluses are the component of the stationery set, which also consists of the wax tablets. The latter however, very rarely preserve to our times. Bone awls and stiluses are as well the common type of relics found on the early medieval sites. Recent studies were mainly oriented on their chronological and typological classification and on determining the place of their manufacture and the place of their use. Yet, there were no attempts of conducting a use wear analysis, which leads to the appropriate characteristic of these tools, previously obtained in a very generic way, mostly basing on their morphological features which is quite misleading, due to their overall similarity. That was an impulse to undertake research on that field. Conducted experiments and use-wear analysis resulted in obtaining an accessible way to distinguish bone awls from bone stiluses, which enabled authoress to apply this method on genuine artifacts from early medieval sites.
