Opis:
Self-heating and self-combustion are currently taking place in some coal waste dumps in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland, e.g. the dumps at Rymer Cones, Starzykowiec, and the Marcel Coal Mine, all in the Rybnik area. These dumps are of similar age and self-heating and combustion have been occurring in all three for many years. The tools of organic petrography (maceral composition, rank, etc.), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and proximate and ultimate analysis are used to investigate the wastes. Organic matter occurs in quantities up to 85 vol.%, typically a few to several vol.%, in the wastes. All three maceral groups (vitrinite, liptinite, and inertinite) are present as unaltered and variously-altered constituents associated with newly-formed petrographic components (bitumen expulsions, pyrolytic carbon). The predominant maceral group is vitrinite with alterations reflected in the presence of irregular cracks, oxidation rims and, rarely, devolatilisation pores. In altered wastes, paler grey-vitrinite and/or coke dominates. The lack of plasticity, the presence of paler-coloured particles, isotropic massive coke, dispersed coked organic matter, and expulsions of bitumens all indicate that heating was slow and extended over a long time. Macerals belonging to other groups are present in unaltered form or with colours paler than the colours of the parent macerals. Based on the relative contents of organic compounds, the most important groups of these identified in the wastes are n-alkanes, acyclic isoprenoids, hopanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, phenol and its derivatives. These compounds occur in all wastes except those most highly altered where they were probably destroyed by high temperatures. These compounds were generated mainly from liptinite-group macerals. Driven by evaporation and leaching, they migrated within and out of the dump. Their presence in some wastes in which microscopically visible organic matter is lacking suggests that they originated elsewhere and subsequently migrated through the dump piles. During their migration, the compounds fractionated, were adsorbed on minerals and/or interacted. The absence of alkenes, and of other unsaturated organic compounds, may reflect primary diagenetic processes that occurred in coals and coal shales during burial and/or organic matter type. Their absence may also be a consequence of heating that lasted many years, hydropyrolysis, and/or the participation of minerals in the reactions occurring within the dumps. The wastes contain compounds typical of organic matter of unaltered kerogen III type and the products of pyrolytic processes, and mixtures of both. In some wastes, organic compounds are completely absent having been destroyed by severe heating. The distributions of n-alkanes in many samples are typical of pyrolysates. In some wastes, narrow n-alkane distributions reflect their generation over small temperature ranges. In others, wider distributions point to greater temperature ranges. Other wastes contain n-alkane distributions typical of unaltered coal and high pristane content or mixtures of pyrolysates and unaltered waste material. The wastes also contain significant amounts of final α Β hopanes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are represented only by two- to five-ring compounds as is typical of the thermal alteration of hard coal. Correlations between the degree of organic matter alteration and the relative contents of individual PAHs and hopanes and geochemical indicators of thermal alteration are generally poor. The properties of the organic matter (its composition and rank), temperature fluctuations within the dumps, migration of organic compounds and mineral involvement are probably responsible for this. The processes taking place in coal waste dumps undergoing self-heating and self-combustion are complicated; they are very difficult to estimate and define. The methods of organic petrology and geochemistry give complementary data allowing the processes to be described. However, each of the dumps investigated represents a separate challenge to be surmounted in any regional attempt to delineate the regional environmental impact of these waste dumps.

Opis:
Polish coal mining industry generates approximately 30 million Mg of mining wastes per year, which represents the largest amount of industrial waste in Poland. This results in the disposal of a huge volume of wastes at waste dumps. The coal mining waste dumps are spread within the area of over 4,000 ha in more than 220 dumping sites, where over 760 million Mg of wastes from hard coal mining have been disposed. One of the most recent problems in Poland is the recovery of coal from mining waste. There is a possibility and necessity to recover coal from mining waste dumps, which should be linked with appropriate legal regulations. In this paper, distribution and dimensions of coal mining waste dumps in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin and the Lublin Coal Basin are analyzed. Selected problems of negative environmental impacts of coal mining wastes – that may be reduced by the recovery of coal – are presented. Legal regulations referring to the mining waste management are analyzed. Some examples of a successful recovery of coal mining dumps as well as economic feasibility studies are given. The analysis of potential objects, which are the most valuable in terms of recovery processes, is presented. Coal mining waste dumps may be considered as important secondary deposits. Feasibility studies and past experiences in the coal recovery show a need for new recovery sites. Sustainable coal recovery is not only economically but also ecologically justified. The re-using and managing of reclaimed dumping sites for local communities is also of importance.

The article presents the results of field and laboratory studies on the state of surface waters in the impact zone of one of the largest mining enterprises of the Russian Federation, i.e. Kovdor Mining and Processing Combine. On the basis of the data from the monitoring studies, the patterns of migration and transformation of manganese in the system of wastes of enrichment – surface water – are revealed. In order to solve the existing environmental problem, an effective method of treating sewage from manganese using organic sorbent based on vermiculite is proposed. The results of laboratory tests of the sorbent are described depending on the method of its modification, as well as on the composition and properties of the purified water. The proposed method of sewage treatment will reduce the negative impact of the company on surface water, thereby improving the ecological situation in the study area and improving the quality of life of the local population.

Development of woody plants in the course of succession on reclaimed soda waste dumps by use of mineral cover was analyzed. The spatial variation in the thickness and granulometric composition of the mineral cover was analysed by the Kriging method. The statistical measurements and geostatistical analysis were used to create maps showing areal variability for the parameters analysed. Analysis of the development of woody vegetation was based on field work and raster layers created on the basis of aerial photographs. No link was found between the parameters of the mineral cover and the distribution and development of spontaneous woody vegetation. The species composition in the study area is limited, and dominated by pioneer species, mainly the expansive black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). Given that the soda waste disposal site is to be used as urban green spaces, the target ecosystem structure must be considered and a suitable course of action selected: further reclamation procedures improving substrate quality and enrichment of the species composition of the tree stand, or management involving sustaining the current state while controlling the course of natural succession of vegetation.

The article is a summary of information about evaluation of a risk degree for a brown coal spontaneous ignition which is realized on the base of a database analysis of information about the development of stative quantities and desorbated gases in the stored bodies of the brown coal. The data were gained from the long term complex measurements which were realized at chosen companies during the coal mining in the previous parts of the project. In the last part of the project, we examined results of temperature models from thermographs with results of gasses and coal samples from the mines. Then, the influence of atmospheric conditions (insolation, water downfall, changes of barometric pressure etc.), the influence of coal mass degradation, the influence of physical and chemical factors, and the influence of other defective factors on the process of the coal spontaneous ignition. The gasmetry was assess with gas in-situ samples and laboratory gas models of indicative gasses for the spontaneous ignition, which were taken from the method of the ther-mic oxidation with the aim of the correlation finding for an epicentre of temperature within the spontaneous ignition.

More than 60% of the waste dumps in India are within 500 m from the communities. The odor impact from these sites may be the sole criterion to prioritize these sites for closure/remediation. The existing rating systems do not consider odor impact in their assessment. A new system, proposed in the study, employs seven parameters derived from the literature review and selects their ratings based on data obtained from a survey of waste dumps in Indian cities having population more than one million and expert judgment. Application of the new system to the waste sites with continuously varying characteristics shows that the scores are spread over the full range of 0–1000 and have minimum clustering. The sensitivity analysis of the new system shows that the system exhibits medium to high sensitivity to five out of seven parameters employed in the system. The odor impact ratings for the fifteen waste dumps from the new system prioritize these dumps into three categories for remedial action and help suggesting a particular cover alternative for these dumps.

Assemblages composed of 11 ammonium min er als, mainly sulphates and chlorides, were recorded from four burning coal-dumps (BCD) in the Upper Silesian Coal Ba sin. Most of them are newly recorded from Poland. Minerals were identified using PXRD and SEM with EDS analyses. Salammoniac, NH4Cl, and tschermigite, (NH4)Al(SO4)2ź12H2O are the most common species on the BCD studied. Kremersite, (NH4,K)2[FeCl5(H2O)], is rare and coexists with members of the ammonioalunite–ammoniojarosite series. Boussingaultite, (NH4)2Mg(SO4)2ź6H2O, and more rarely clairite, (NH4)2Fe3(SO4)4(OH)3ź3H2O, and mascagnite, (NH4)2SO4, ac company numerous Mg, Al, Fe and Ca sulphate minerals. These usually occuras very fine admixtures forming coatings, small nodules or porous masses and were found on the BCD surface close to gas vents. Also a massive sulphate crust was found in the deeper part of the BCD nearby the fire zone. This crust is composed mainly of an hydrous sulphates: godovikovite, (NH4)(Al,Fe)(SO4)2 , and very minor sabieite, (NH4)Fe(SO4)2, and efremovite, (NH4)2Mg2(SO4)3, which were transformed into different hydrated sulphates in the outer zone of the crust. The fibrous or dendritic habit of many ammonium minerals, and the vesicular texture of some sulphate aggregates, point to their crystallization from the gas phase. Some ammonia miner ls may also have developed through hydration of prevlously formed phases or precipitated from locally formed aqueous solutions due to cooling or evaporation. The appear ance of ammonia minerals on BCD can be a useful indicator of the presence of underground fires.

The paper refers to the research Trash in the Wild: A Pilot Project Mapping Citizenship Environmental Activism in the Collaborative Study in the Lodz Area. In the study, inhabitants of Lodz (Poland) were invited to participate in data gathering and create a map of unauthorized dumps in their city. The collaborative mapping was intended to localize problematic spots in the city of Lodz, but it also shows civic commitment and the inhabitants’ ecological consciousness level. The authors based on ethnographic data (observations, walk-alongs, interviews, and data obtained from institutions), attempting to develop a situational analysis of the phenomenon of illegal dumps in the city. The analysis reveals how different positions of the City Guard, Municipal Economy Department, waste disposal companies, journalists, environmental activists, researchers, and citizens participating in the project vary their standpoints and views on the studied problem. Presenting the context and first results of the research, the authors refer to the issue of building relationships with researched subjects during the investigation process. Trying to navigate between them, researchers strive to introduce their different, sometimes contradictory, viewpoints into the research, not losing their commitment and the valuable data they can submit. The analysis shows that the issue of illegal dumps lies at the intersection of many discourses and involves numerous social worlds, organizations, and entities. In this dynamic situation, many practices and conditions contribute to the persistence of the problem of illegal waste disposal.

Anthropogenic activity causes essential changes in the circulation of elements in the environment, which leads to the pollution of individual environmental components. The process of accumulation of heavy metal elements is particularly hazardous. Excessive amounts of heavy metals pose serious risk to plants, animals and human beings. In presented study heavy metal content (Pb, Cd and Ni, Zn and Cu) in the soil samples collected from a different distance from the top of post-mining dumps in Czerwionka-Leszczyny was determined. Moreover, the impact of these contents on the density and diversity of soil fauna at these sites was defined. The heavy metal content did not exceed the standards set out for the soils of Poland. The concentration of heavy metals was found to be from 1.18 for Cd to 222 mg/kg d.m. for Zn. No clear impact of the studied metal content on pedofauna was found. The increase in the number of fauna with the distance from the top of the dump was noticed (except for a distance of 11 meters from the top of the dump).

Exploitation of mineral deposits, as well as their processes of minerals enrichment were the source of the extractive wastes deposited without protection in landfills, dumps or tailings ponds (mainly in the XIX and up to the 90s of XX century). These objects, closed or abandoned, pose a potential threat to the environment. To eliminate or minimize this threat the methodology for implementation of an inventory of closed and abandoned mining waste facilities was developed, in accordance with the Act of 10 July 2008 on mining waste. It includes uniform criteria used to analyze objects in terms of their environmental impact. Also a detailed design of verification documentation field in form of a database was developed.

Technologies using living organisms for extracting metals from mine wastes, ore concentrates and poor quality ores have been developed since the early 1980s. Of these technologies, the most popular is biomining that uses the natural ability of microorganisms to leach metals. Microorganisms oxidize sulfur and iron in sulfide ores, thus contributing to the conversion of insoluble metal sulfides to soluble sulfates, which enables to recover pure metals from extracts. By degrading the mineral (rock) matrix, microorganisms make extraction of precious metals with traditional techniques easier and more effective. Phytominig is based on the tendency of some plant species to bioaccumulate excessive amounts of metals from their hostrock. The plants, called hyperaccumulators are grown on highly mineralized soils or post-mine lands and their yield (bio-ore) is used as a pure metal source. Compared to the biomining, this technology is not so popular primarily because of the longevity of this process and its unprofitability. This report describes bio- and phytomining technologies, the most important species and their ecological demands, as well as biochemical processes that are associated with bio- and phytomining. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies, and their potential for future applications are summarized in the last chapter.

Opis:
The feedback of international practice shown that the installation of photovoltaic (PV) parc on the dumps is one of the best environmental and economic solutions. However, the number of projects is still very limited comparing to the identified potential. This paper addresses site selection criteria for landfill PV installation, particularly in relation to mining hazards. For installing the PV, different environmental, technical and economic criteria should be respected. The slope of the dumps appears as the main constraint for the installation of photovoltaic panels. In addition, specific foundation systems should be considered to ensure long-terms safety and security. The paper presents several examples of installation of photovoltaic panels on coal-lignite dumps in France.
