Opis:
Impact of ungulates on forest communities is determined by food availability and structure of the community. Both food and structure are formed among others by large disturbances i.e. wildfires. The biggest wildfire in Poland occurred in August 1992 in Rudy Raciborskie forest district. The study on food availability on burnt area was carried out in July and August 2004. Phytosociological releves were made on 100 plots on burnt area and 100 in unburnt forest. Comparisons were made between burnt and unburnt area, between burnt and unburnt area in dominating forest types, and on burnt area between areas with natural regeneration and reforested and between areas covered with pine and birch stands. Availability of food is better in unburnt forest than on burnt area and in self−regenerated than in reforested stands. Food availability can not substantiate the view of greater ungulates impact on burnt area.

Opis:
Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is economically the most important tree species in Polish forestry. Congeneric pine stands have a quite low level of biodiversity, and logging with clear sites may even cause their further decline. It is very important to discover the influence of clear−cuttings in managed pine stands on different groups of organisms. One of them are bats which play an important role in forest biotopes as a regulator of insect pests. The aim of this paper is to compare the foraging activity of bats in pine stands of different stages of growth. The study was carried out in three complexes of pine forests in western Poland: Drawska Forest, Notecka Forest and Dolnośląskie Forests. Four types of growth phases were studied: clear−cut sites (Z), young plantations in the age 2−5 years (U), 41−60−years−old stands (III) and mature stands in the age over 80 years (V). The study of the foraging bat activity was conducted with broadband ultrasound detectors Pettersson D−1000X within 3 hours after sunset in summer periods of 2013 and 2014. The recordings were analyzed with BatSound software. Total 19 180 bat passes were recorded on all 120 sampling plots. 11 bat species: Nyctalus noctula, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Eptesicus serotinus, P. nathusii, Myotis myotis, P. pygmaeus, M. nattereri, Barbastella barbastellus, N. leisleri, E. nilssonii and Vespertilio murinus and four groups of species: NEV (Nyctalus, Eptesicus, Vespertilio), MSP (Myotis), PSP (Pipistrellus), and PLE (Plecotus) were recognized (tab. 1). The dominant was common noctule N. noctula (71.5%). The highest foraging activity of bats was recorded in open areas: clear sites and plantations (fig. 1), next in mature stands and middle−aged stands. The obtained results suggest that bats can adapt to a mosaic of habitats created by clear−cutting harvesting system in managed pine forests.

Opis:
This study evaluated the environmental risk drivers affecting the occurrence of cockchafer grubs in mature stands bordering with open spaces. The following factors were taken into the consideration: the distance from the edge towards the forest interior, the forest site type, species composition, canopy openness and the cover of forest floor with vegetation as well as cutting treatment in some of the investigated stands. In one of the biggest cockchafer outbreak centers in Poland (Lubaczów Forest District; SE Poland) 6 mature stands were chosen and estalished 5 transects in each of them. Each transect was 250 m long and consisted of 6 pits (1×0.5×0.5 m) in a regular distance of 50 m with the first pit on an open space bordering with forest. Pits were used to determine the grub infestation of the soil. In the area of 100 m² around the pit, the general vegetation cover and tree species composition of a stand were characterized. The forest light environment was defined by hemispherical photography. The distance in transect and the fact that stand was harvested were also taken into consideration. The applied logistic regression model demonstrated that the site fertility is the most important factor that significantly increases the risk of cockchafer grubs occurrence. The other characteristics that also cause that stand is more attractive for the cockchafer grubs are: participation of the broadleaved species in stand composition and the dense vegetation cover. Furthermore, the cockchafer grubs occurrence was more frequent in the forest interior than in an open space or at the forest−meadow ecotone.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a comparative analysis of basic density and shrinkage of juvenile and mature wood of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Mature wood turned to exhibit higher density and shrinkage. Differences are dependent on the location of a sample at the stem profile. Properties of juvenile wood exhibit higher variability in comparison to those of mature wood, especially in relation to shrinkage.
