The following work presents research of driver behaviour in pre-accident situations conducted on Kielce Car Track within a research project N509016 31/1251. The aim of the following research work is the completion and extension of the knowledge concerning reaction times and an update to an existing data base. At the same time, driver behaviours in a particular pre-accident situation are analysed. The tests are conducted with a relatively big group of drivers, of different age and different driving experience. Reaction times are determined for three event scenarios, as it was previously mentioned, the type of scenario can significantly influence on obtained values of these times. The research conducted in a pre-arranged risk situation, where an obstacle in a form of a car mock-up suddenly forces its way into a road area with a simultaneous limitation of "room" for a manoeuvre by a lorry mock-up moving on the opposite lane and opposite direction. This work presents the pattern and scenario course of a pre-accident situation selected for tests. Measuring equipment and movable mock-ups used for research were characterised. There were presented selected, preliminary results of three trials characterised by different values of risk time (different level of accident risk). The following article presents the patterns of the first pre-accident situation under research, the research method and example research results obtained on Kielce Track.

The research defines components of driver reaction time under different conditions. The duration of a latent period and time of respective response to a stimulus are determined. It is traced how driver reaction time depends on the complexity of the situation the driver was exposed to. With the help of the NeuroCom complex, computer program and processing of video recordings, the main components of driver reaction time were defined to be information in-flow to the cerebral cortex, detection and recognition of a stimulus, making a right decision and respective reaction. The obtained results can be used for determining dynamic gauge and braking distance of a vehicle, which, in its turn, influences the road safety.

Following any type of statistics, the human being (a driver) is the weakest element of the man - vehicle - environment system. The paper discusses research on drivers behaviours in pre-accident situations, conducted in driving simulator auto PW under the research project MNiSzW N509 016 31/1251. Tests have been performed in a staged situation of danger involving unexpected emergence of an roadblock - passenger car into the road area, with a simultaneous limitation of space for making a passing-by manoeuvre on the opposite traffic lane, which was caused by the fact that a delivery vehicle was approaching on the lane. The work presents issues that are related to the preparation of research scenario by realising vehicle traffic in the way assuring the probability of individual tests. Basic featur es of the autoPW car driver simulator have been characterised. The modifications, introduced in the simulator for purposes of the research, have been discussed. Selected research results - the probability diagrams of occurrence ofa specific type of collision, depending on the so-called risk time (potential time that a driver has to avoid the collision), have been presented. The diagrams indicate a clear boundary beyond which avoidance of the collision becomes practically impossible. The results obtained have been compared to results of research being similar in their character, conducted in another research centre.

In the paper, results of some driver reaction time research are presented. In the research, typical device for psychological studies of drivers was used - so named reflexometer MCR. The reaction time of the driver, using controllers (keypads) of the panel, is assessed in response to stimuli in the form of sound and light signals. Results of measurement for above 100 drivers are presented. The surveyed group of respondents consisted of men aged from 19 up to 64. So called simple reaction as well as complex reaction is analyzed. A main criterion of analysis is driver age (age of respondents). This article presents a statistical analysis of the received results (reaction times). The results are presented in the form of histograms and statistical parameters of the distributions obtained (median, mean value, standard deviations, extreme values, and quantiles of order 0.1 and 0.9). They are presented for separate four age classes. In case of simple reaction examination, it has additionally been presented how a type of stimulus: light or sound stimuli affect the reaction time of respondents. The presented results are one of the effects of research project no N509 016 31/1251.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań czasu reakcji kierowców. W badaniach tych wykorzystano typowe stanowisko stosowane w testach prowadzonych w pracowniach psychologii transportu – tzw. refleksometr. Czas reakcji oceniany jest na manipulatorach (przyciskach) stanowiska na bodźce w postaci sygnałów świetlnych i dźwiękowych. Pokazano wyniki badań dla grupy 100 kierowców, którą tworzyli mężczyźni w wieku od 19 do 64 lat. Oceniane były tak zwane reakcje - prosta i złożona. Głównym kryterium analizy był wiek badanych osób. W artykule została przedstawiona analiza statystyczna uzyskanych wyników (czasów reakcji), zaprezentowanych w postaci histogramów i parametrów statystycznych uzyskanych rozkładów (mediana, wartość średnia, odchylenia standardowe, wartości skrajne oraz kwantyle rzędu 0,1 i 0,9). Są one przedstawione dla 4 wyróżnionych klas wiekowych. W przypadku badania reakcji prostej przedstawiono ponadto wpływ rodzaju bodźca: bodziec świetlny lub dźwiękowy na czas reakcji badanych. Zaprezentowane wyniki są jednym z efektów realizacji projektu badawczego N509 016 31/1251.

Results of author’s research work on the determining of driver reaction time, carried out on a prototype test machine “autoPW T”, have been presented. The machine was built at the Faculty of Transport of the Warsaw University of Technology and it can be used for performing tests known from typical laboratory “psycho-technical examinations” (reaction time measurements on “reflex testers”) on the one hand and, on the other hand, for evaluating driver’s reactions at the operation of real vehicle controls (steering wheel as well as brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals) during a simulated drive with a prescribed speed. Apart from a brief description of the test machine and its capabilities, results of the examination of about 100 drivers have been presented, which included a comparison of the reaction times measured for the steering wheel and brake pedal being operated. The measurement results quoted were obtained from four different tests, i.e. the testing of simple reaction on the steering wheel, simple reaction on the brake pedal, complex reaction, and reaction at emergency braking. They have been shown in the form of histograms of the average values and standard deviations of the reaction times and other statistical parameters of the distributions obtained for the whole population of the drivers examined. Differences in the reaction time values depending on specific test types, with reference to the central measure of the distribution (average value) and the measure of dispersion of the distribution (standard deviation value), have been pointed out.
W artykule przedstawione są wyniki badań własnych oceny czasu reakcji, wykonanych na prototypowym stanowisku autoPW-T, zbudowanym na Wydziale Transportu Politechniki Warszawskiej. Na stanowisku tym można z jednej strony stosować testy znane z typowych laboratoryjnych „badań psychotechnicznych” (pomiary na tzw. „refleksometrach”), a z drugiej – oceniać reakcje przy operowaniu rzeczywistymi elementami sterowania samochodem (kierownica, pedały hamulca, przyspieszenie oraz sprzęgło) podczas symulowanej jazdy z zadaną prędkością. Poza krótkim opisem stanowiska i jego możliwości pokazano rezultaty badań około 100 kierowców – porównanie czasu reakcji w trakcie operowania kołem kierownicy i pedałem hamulca. Zaprezentowano wyniki czterech różnych testów: reakcji prostej na kole kierownicy, reakcji prostej na pedale hamulca, reakcji złożonej oraz tzw. „hamowania awaryjnego”. Są one przedstawione w postaci histogramów wartości średnich i odchyleń standardowych czasów reakcji dla populacji badanych kierowców oraz innych parametrów statystycznych uzyskanych rozkładów. Wskazano na różnice czasu reakcji w zależności od rodzaju badania, w odniesieniu do miary centralnej rozkładu (wartość średnia) i miary jego rozproszenia (odchylenie standardowe).

Each driver should drive according to the actual road traffic rules of the country in which he is currently located. The law systems of various states of Europe allow an increased maximal blood alcohol level of driver. As the fact that no small number of road accidents is caused because of the influence of alcohol on the driver, it is necessary to focus the attention of the society on this issue. The paper deals with the influence of alcohol on the reaction time of the driver. The effect of alcohol on driver behaviour has been studied. The reaction time of several drivers from a selected group of people was measured. At first (before alcohol drinking) the physical and mental condition of the drivers was assessed, using a series of question. Subsequently, the measurements were carried out with a sober driver. After this initial measurement the driver began to drink alcohol and after 20 minutes the level of alcohol in driver´s breath was determined by certificated equipment. It followed by starting the vehicle at a speed of approximately 50 km/h and stopping the vehicle in front of the simulated barrier. During the tests of the stopping distance, the mean fully developed deceleration was explored as the supporting variables. As the most important variable was the driver´s reaction time. It was researched by using of the video-analysing from two synchronized cameras. One camera was placed on the windscreen to monitor the situation in front of the vehicle, the other one monitored the movement of the driver´s feet. The aim of this paper is to focus on the fact that there is a dependence between the amount of consumed alcohol and the driver´s reaction time, which significantly affects the road safety. The reaction time of the driver directly influences to the stopping distance thus it is resolute for stopping the vehicle before a barrier.

The paper presents the results of the behaviour of drivers in emergency/risk situations caused by a pedestrian entering the driving lane from the right. They were carried out on Kielce Track in Miedziana Góra. 100 drivers were tested in various age groups at different value risk times behind 0,5s - 3,0 s. The drivers have the opportunity to perform variant defensive manoeuvres: braking, bypassing or braking with bypassing. The researchers used a specially designed, safe model-up a pedestrian, moving on the path of a car from behind the curtains limiting the visibility of the model. The paper presents and analyses the results of measurements of the reaction times of drivers in a risk time function (mental reaction time, psychomotor reaction time while "braking", motor reaction time when braking psychomotor reaction time). The presented results of drivers reaction time confirm the thesis about the influence the risk time on reaction time. Drivers' reaction times confirm the thesis on the influence of the risk time on reaction times, both when turning and braking and also indicate a trend to shorten reaction times in difficult situations. The research method allowed for the capture of many of these disturbances though the fact of such a capture itself does not mean the possibility of their unambiguous interpretation.

The aim of this study was to analyse the driver behaviour in simple and complex car-following situations under day- and night-time lighting conditions (four scenarios). Nearly 70 drivers participated in the tests, each taking several trials, during which they were exposed to randomly selected situations. The tests involved driving along a two-lane motorway with a vehicle in front and responding to its sudden braking. Different distances between the vehicles were simulated. The scenarios varied in complexity ranging from none to some vehicles around the subject vehicle. The study involved measuring different reaction times, i.e. the time to release the accelerator pedal, the time to apply the brake pedal and the time to start steering, to find out how the particular emergency manoeuvres contribute to the occurrence of collisions in the four scenarios. The results show that both the complexity of a road situation as well as the lighting conditions determine the type of emergency manoeuvre undertaken and the time of the driver reaction.

The driver’s reaction time is one of the most important parameters for the road preaccident analysis. There are known the results of tests, in which the value of this parameter was determined in expected and unexpected road situations. But in some cases, this time may be longer e.g. in situations in which the driver’s attention may be distracted by keeping observations other than the area, in front of the car’s surroundings. There are many manoeuvres, when the driver is obliged to observe many areas at the same time. Thus, his attention must be turned away from the main area – in front of the vehicle. The paper presents the results of tests involving the measurement of the driver’s attention time focused on observing the surrounding other than the car’s path. During the test, the driver’s attention was focus on observing the side and back mirror, car radio and at the mobile phone. Certain values can be potentially considered as extending the typical driver’s reaction time. The results of the presented tests have practical applications and can be used in the process of issuing opinions on traffic accidents.

Objectives The article analyzes the driver’s psychophysiological qualities such as complex reaction and individual ability to control the vehicle that has suddenly lost its stability. The comparative analysis of the duration of reaction time was performed to assess the negative influence of speaking on a phone and driving with one hand. Material and Methods The experimental research was carried out on special training grounds with the road surface having low adhesion coefficient, where sudden lateral vehicle destabilization was caused by the moving plate mounted on the road surface. The vehicle onboard equipment was used for identifying the difference between the destabilization moment and the responsive driver’s steering wheel movement which in this research was assumed as the reaction time. Results Statistical methods of research applied for the analysis of results showed high probability that the driver’s actions would be significantly late in controlling a vehicle. When stabilizing a vehicle movement, the complex reaction time of a vehicle driver speaking on a mobile phone is increased by 18.1% as compared with the conventional driving by a driver not speaking on a phone. Conclusions The risk of using the phone depends on the driver characteristics, traits and attitudes that affect the level of their experienced dangers, and the intensity of using mobile phones and driving. Speaking on a phone while driving increases the driver’s reaction time and mental workload, and changes his or her visual overview ability as well as understanding of the situation. Sterowany przez kierowcę pojazd może być rozpatrywany jako system regulacji, w którym kierowca jest regulatorem a maszyna rolnicza obiektem regulowanym. Źródłem sił zewnętrznych docierających do kierującego i wywierających wpływ na dynamikę samochodu jest zmieniające się otoczenie pojazdu. Efektywność działań kierowcy zależy od sytuacji na drodze, własności pojazdu oraz od cech psychofizycznych kierowcy. Kierowca jest włączony w układ droga - pojazd - kierowca jako ogniwo sprzężenia zwrotnego. Jego funkcje dają się opisać jako przetwarzanie pochodzących z zewnątrz informacji dotyczących ruchu pojazdu na sterowanie stanem poszczególnych układów. Parametry opisujące zachowania kierowcy (np. - czas reakcji kierowcy) można wyznaczyć na podstawie znajomości modelu układu opisanego w dziedzinie widma za pomocą transmitancji widmowych lub w dziedzinie czasu za pomocą korelacji.
Vehicle driven by driver may be considered as control system with driver as a controller and vehicle as controlled system. Changeable vehicle environment is the source of outer forces reaching driver and having effect on vehicle dynamics. Driver efficiency depends on situation on the road, vehicle characteristic and psychical and physical driver features. Driver is included in road-vehicle-driver system as feedback element. His functions can be described as concerning running vehicle input data processing into control of vehicle systems. Parameters describing drives behaviour (eg - driver reaction time delay) can be identified basing on model of system in frequency domain (from transmissibility) or in time domain (from correlation).

In the work we performed a review of studies of foreign scholars on changing the reaction time of the driver depending on various road conditions, namely the change in the response time when using the traffic light regulation. Earlier by the authors of this article have already been carried out research in the field of throughput of a site of a highway with traffic regulation, which showed that this value depends on the time of reaction of the driver. In this article the estimation of how much bandwidth the highway using different result obtained in the course of analysis, time value of reaction of the driver and is a direct correlation bandwidth from the time of reaction of the driver. The values obtained allow to conclude that taking into account the psycho-physiological characteristics of drivers (response time) will have a significant impact on the throughput and the various methods of organization and reorganization of sections of the road network, implementation of which is used investigated the amount of bandwidth.
В работе выполнен обзор исследований зарубежных ученых по изменению времени реакции водителя в зависимости от различных дорожных условий, а именно изменение времени реакции при использовании светофорного регулирования. Ранее авторами данной статьи уже были проведены исследования в области пропускной способности участка автотрассы при светофорном регулировании, которые показали, что данная величина зависит от времени реакции водителя. В данной статье проведен расчет величины пропускной способности автотрассы при использовании различных, полученных в ходе анализа, значений времени реакции водителя и установлена прямая зависимость пропускной способности от времени реакции водителя. Полученные значения, позволяют сделать вывод о том, что учет психофизиологических характеристик водителей (время реакции) будет оказывать значительное влияние на пропускную способность и различные методы организации и реорганизации участков улично-дорожной сети, при реализации которых используется исследуемая величина пропускной способности.
