Opis:
Alcohol consumption by drivers has a negative impact on the driving behaviour and the risk of an accident. The objective of the work the usefulness of the AUDIT tool in relation to alcohol consumption patterns of people who lost their driving license for drunk driving. The study used a 10-item AUDIT questionnaire, which included 196 people aged 19 to 71 years. The experimental group (Group 1) consisted of people who lost their driving license "after drinking", and the control group (Group 2) consisted of people who drive motor vehicles at work. It has been shown that the majority of people who had their authorization to drive a car revoked, faced difficulties in controlling their alcohol consumption. There were no statistically significant differences in the results of the AUDIT questionnaire, taking into account the group and gender criteria. The surveyed drivers most often revealed a low and moderate pattern of alcohol consumption. People who drink, in the problem model (risky) significantly more often lost their driving license than people in the control group.
Badani kierowcy ujawniali najczęściej niski i umiarkowany wzorzec spożywania alkoholu. Osoby pijące w modelu problemowym (ryzykownym) istotnie częściej utraciły prawo jazdy od osób z grupy kontrolnej.

Opis:
The following work presents research of driver behaviour in pre-accident situations conducted on Kielce Car Track within a research project N509016 31/1251. The aim of the following research work is the completion and extension of the knowledge concerning reaction times and an update to an existing data base. At the same time, driver behaviours in a particular pre-accident situation are analysed. The tests are conducted with a relatively big group of drivers, of different age and different driving experience. Reaction times are determined for three event scenarios, as it was previously mentioned, the type of scenario can significantly influence on obtained values of these times. The research conducted in a pre-arranged risk situation, where an obstacle in a form of a car mock-up suddenly forces its way into a road area with a simultaneous limitation of "room" for a manoeuvre by a lorry mock-up moving on the opposite lane and opposite direction. This work presents the pattern and scenario course of a pre-accident situation selected for tests. Measuring equipment and movable mock-ups used for research were characterised. There were presented selected, preliminary results of three trials characterised by different values of risk time (different level of accident risk). The following article presents the patterns of the first pre-accident situation under research, the research method and example research results obtained on Kielce Track.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the behaviour of drivers in emergency/risk situations caused by a pedestrian entering the driving lane from the right. They were carried out on Kielce Track in Miedziana Góra. 100 drivers were tested in various age groups at different value risk times behind 0,5s - 3,0 s. The drivers have the opportunity to perform variant defensive manoeuvres: braking, bypassing or braking with bypassing. The researchers used a specially designed, safe model-up a pedestrian, moving on the path of a car from behind the curtains limiting the visibility of the model. The paper presents and analyses the results of measurements of the reaction times of drivers in a risk time function (mental reaction time, psychomotor reaction time while "braking", motor reaction time when braking psychomotor reaction time). The presented results of drivers reaction time confirm the thesis about the influence the risk time on reaction time. Drivers' reaction times confirm the thesis on the influence of the risk time on reaction times, both when turning and braking and also indicate a trend to shorten reaction times in difficult situations. The research method allowed for the capture of many of these disturbances though the fact of such a capture itself does not mean the possibility of their unambiguous interpretation.

Opis:
Following any type of statistics, the human being (a driver) is the weakest element of the man - vehicle - environment system. The paper discusses research on drivers behaviours in pre-accident situations, conducted in driving simulator auto PW under the research project MNiSzW N509 016 31/1251. Tests have been performed in a staged situation of danger involving unexpected emergence of an roadblock - passenger car into the road area, with a simultaneous limitation of space for making a passing-by manoeuvre on the opposite traffic lane, which was caused by the fact that a delivery vehicle was approaching on the lane. The work presents issues that are related to the preparation of research scenario by realising vehicle traffic in the way assuring the probability of individual tests. Basic featur es of the autoPW car driver simulator have been characterised. The modifications, introduced in the simulator for purposes of the research, have been discussed. Selected research results - the probability diagrams of occurrence ofa specific type of collision, depending on the so-called risk time (potential time that a driver has to avoid the collision), have been presented. The diagrams indicate a clear boundary beyond which avoidance of the collision becomes practically impossible. The results obtained have been compared to results of research being similar in their character, conducted in another research centre.

In the majority of media reports regarding traffic accidents the most common the cause of these events commented by saying "the driver got lost by routine." Rarely it rains explain what is meant by this slogan. Meanwhile, in psychological terms, the concept of routines is not entirely identical with the current understanding. Despite this, the researchers also note that the behavior of the routine can sometimes be catastrophic. In this article I will try to answer the question what is "routine" as a factor that can cause an accident and how to prevent its eventual influential to make mistakes on roads. To do this, it was necessary to see what kind of processes are involved in practice of driving and how people acquire this skills and also how we get distortion as the result of their actions.

Opis:
Driving style and driver behaviour are important in evaluating city bus drivers. Buses are one of the means of public transportation in cities, used by millions of people. The purpose of this study was to present a model for preliminary classification of driving style of the professional drivers based on averaged maximum values of lateral and longitudinal acceleration recorded during regular work. First, the recorded acceleration values of 69 city bus drivers were analysed. Then, the correlation between the acceleration values and the age and experience of the city bus drivers was examined. Based on the results of the preliminary classification of drivers, extreme values for both lateral acceleration and longitudinal acceleration (deceleration and acceleration) were obtained by 3 drivers out of the 69 tested. The study also examined the relationship between averaged values of maximum lateral and longitudinal acceleration and driver age and experience. Based on the correlation results, showed that age and the number of years of holding a driver’s license are not significantly related to acceleration. Therefore, the method can be used to analyse drivers regardless of their age and experience.

Opis:
Driving is an extremely complex behaviour that is also very difficult to measure. Recently, were conducted research which main purpose was quantification of chosen driving parameters to identify dangerous behaviours. For these research modern apparatus for psychophysiology reactions were commonly used, and experiments were made with the use of the driving simulator. Despite such possibilities, most of the researches over road traffic safety are still conducted with the use of self-reported questionnaires or with subjective evaluation of specialists. During driving process one of the most important aspect is a proper observation of road and its environment. Correct perception is necessary for proper reaction of driver for occurring events. Drivers attention is absorbed not only by the road, other road users and traffic infrastructure, but also by road environment elements like buildings, billboards and advertisements could attract his attention. A key to understand drivers’ behaviour seems to be measurement of his visual activity. To measure it, eye tracking instruments could be used, which allows to track drivers eyeball movements during driving. In Motor Transport Institute were recently conducted studies on drivers’ visual behaviour and indication of some which could be potentially dangerous. There were also indicated some differences over population in visual search strategies. These studies led to identification of some undesirable behaviours which could led to accidents. Following paper presents briefly process and results of chosen Motor Transport Institute research with use of a high-class driving simulator and mobile eye-tracker. Also apparatus parameters and used simulation scenarios were described.

The article presents pre-accident simulation tests conducted on a car track and in a simulator. The aim of the tests was to verify the correctness of a driver model worked out for such a type of analysis and the identification of its parameters. The article shows the comparison of parameters characteristic for driver behaviour in both testing environments. As the driver may have chosen the manoeuvre to defend - to brake or (and) to avoid an obstacle, the frequency of choosing the above - mentioned manoeuvres has been compared in each testing environment. The comparison of driver reaction time was carried out during braking as well as turning. Correlation coefficients between average reaction time were determined. The comparison of a manoeuvre realization method has been conducted. As a numerical measure of the manoeuvre realization method, the parameters of a mathematical driver model were taken into account. The correlation analysis of model parameters was realized on the example of selected drivers.

Opis:
Over one million people die each year on the roads and about 20-50 million are injured. Traffic safety is a global problem that needs interdisciplinary scientific approach to develop methodology for safety studies that will lead to valid conclusions and in the end to suitable preventive measures. It is difficult to define what a safe and unsafe behaviour is. Transportation research tries to find relation between significant variables and traffic safety in the triangle of interaction between human, vehicle and environment. Raw accidents data excludes ex-ante evaluations and is insufficient due to the rare frequency and difficulty with investigating causes. There is still lack of consensus between researchers on usage of the traffic safety indicators and their cut-off values. Article presents different methods for measuring driver behaviour and objective behavioural indicators that are commonly used as traffic safety measures e.g. time to collision, post-encroachment-time, deceleration rate, time headway, red-light violations, lane deviations, gap acceptance and others. The aim of the paper is to provide general framework for exploring valid and reliable variables in the traffic safety studies.

The aim of this study was to analyse the driver behaviour in simple and complex car-following situations under day- and night-time lighting conditions (four scenarios). Nearly 70 drivers participated in the tests, each taking several trials, during which they were exposed to randomly selected situations. The tests involved driving along a two-lane motorway with a vehicle in front and responding to its sudden braking. Different distances between the vehicles were simulated. The scenarios varied in complexity ranging from none to some vehicles around the subject vehicle. The study involved measuring different reaction times, i.e. the time to release the accelerator pedal, the time to apply the brake pedal and the time to start steering, to find out how the particular emergency manoeuvres contribute to the occurrence of collisions in the four scenarios. The results show that both the complexity of a road situation as well as the lighting conditions determine the type of emergency manoeuvre undertaken and the time of the driver reaction.

In recent years, energy recuperation systems have been used more and more often. This is due to the rapid development of electric and hybrid cars. In view of the growing technology that allows for a recuperation system efficiency increase, it is important to consider whether the weakest link is in this case not the driver and his ability to customize the driving style to the needs of energy recovery. This article attempts to answer this question. For that purpose, the special road tests were conducted in a real urban traffic. Two drivers were involved, each of whom used alternating recovery and non-recovery driving style. In total twelve road tests, realisations have been completed. The results of the measurements were entered into a mathematical model that simulated the work of the energy recuperation system. It allowed estimating how different recovery systems can work in the conditions of conducted tests. On this basis, an analysis was made both in terms of the total amount of energy that can be recovered in the case of recuperative and non-recuperative driving, and analysis of the recuperation system working and the real impact of the driver's driving style on the energy stored in the car's battery. Basis on the conducted considerations authors noted that use of recuperative driving technique could increase the amount of stored braking energy on average by 60%. It was also seen a significant impact on the energy waveform in the battery.

Paper describes possibilities to use advanced vehicles simulator combined with additional supporting research devices for measuring drivers' behaviour. Analyzing drivers' behaviour with driving simulators is a rapidly growing field of research, which also demands the interdisciplinary approach from different science disciplines like psychology and simulation engineering. Paper presents modern research methods in transport safety researches and devices that are used to understand better driver's behaviour inside the driving simulator, e.g. Vienna Test System and mobile eye-tracker. Paper also explains a problem of simulator sickness that frequently occurs during the studies inside the driving simulators. Main advantage of using simulators is possibility to achieve full standardization of research conditions. Visualization system based on set of four projectors and cylindrical screen with 200 degrees of vision range, which allows to completely cover the range of sight of the driver to enhance driving reality. The view in the car mirrors is presented on three LCD screens which sizes are very close to the mirrors used in real car mirrors. The scenery generated by computer simulation is moving according to the car speed in the simulation. Similarly to the passenger car simulator, simulator of truck and bus is build based on visualization system which is composed of cylindrical screen, with two hundred degrees of horizontal range of view. Simulator gives the ability to trace functioning of few different types of vehicles.

Opis:
Functionality of a square used for ferry boats boarding has repercussions on safety and comfort of users, as well as on the efficiency of maritime transport. Inadequate use of the infrastructure causes driving errors followed by corrective manoeuvres, loss of time and potential accidents with consequences for community and the maritime transport company. The wide diversification of traffic components and payment methods are generally managed through a traditional horizontal and vertical signage system that does not refer to any current legislation. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate driver's behaviour and the interaction that takes place between the latter and the environmental context. In particular, the authors focused on the study of the driver’s workload in a simulated environment, considering a users' sample and different driving scenarios inside the boarding area, concerning traffic conditions (isolated vehicle or presence of disturbing vehicles) and signs position. All this, in order to evaluate whether any change in a virtual context could bring real benefits to drivers, before being transferred to the real context. The results obtained, in terms of subjective workload and performance measures, have made it possible to judge the different solutions proposed in a simulated environment through synthetic indices referring to the entire boarding place or at certain parts of it. In this way, the manager can decide to change the circulation of the entire square or only some aspects of detail, such as some signals, in the event that they manifest an evident difficulty in the transfer of information. The use of the simulated environment allows greater speed in identifying the best solution, lower costs (avoiding the creation of a critical configuration for circulation) and greater user safety, since risky manoeuvres are identified and corrected by the simulator. The proposed procedure can be used by managers for a correct arrangement of the signs, for the purpose of correctly directing the flows and maximizing the flow rate disposed of.

Opis:
The modern person in an era of information breakthrough faces the problem of choosing and processing information coming to her. Human activities in the systems "driver - vehicle - road - environment" - not an exception. The role and importance of information in all spheres of human activity have increased significantly. The paper aims to find and assess the patterns of information flow impact on the driver performance in the "driver - vehicle - road - environment" system. Electroencephalography (EEG) method using the Neurocom hardware and software complex used to determine the change in the electrical activity of the driver's brain during the processing of input information; electrocardiography method using the hardware and software complex «Cardiosens», used to determine the fatigue level of the driver during research; tabular method of double letter cancelation test, involved in determining the time of distraction from the performance of the driver's core activity in laboratory experiments. Using mathematical modelling methods and methods, mathematical models of EEG and ECG parameters influence on the time of distraction from execution by the driver of the main activity were obtained. Regression models of the influence of the aggregate of the quantitative characteristics of the intensity of fast (beta-rhythm – β and gamma-rhythm – γ ) and slow (delta- rhythm – δ and theta-rhythm –θ) EEG signals are proposed. The regression equations obtained for determining the regularities of the influence of information flow on the results of activity of road users are defined. Set up that the time of the driver's distraction from performing the core activity can reach from 0,94 s to 4,77 s depending on particular conditions. Information flows arising from the location of noticeable advertising in the driver's field of vision when driving a vehicle, distract his attention from 0,23 s to 2,81 s.
