Opis:
Drinking Water Distribution Systems (DWDSs) play a key role in sustainable development of modern society. They are classified as critical infrastructure systems. This imposes a large set of highly demanding requirements on the DWDS operation and requires dedicated algorithms for on-line monitoring and control to tackle related problems. Requirements on DWDS availability restrict the usability of the real plant in the design phase. Thus, a proper model is crucial. Within this paper a DWDS multi-species quality model for simulation and design is derived. The model is composed of multiple highly inter-connected modules which are introduced to represent chemical and biological species and (above all) their interactions. The chemical part includes the processes of chloramine decay with additional bromine catalysis and reaction with nitrogen compounds. The biological part consists of both heterotrophic and chemo-autotrophic bacteria species. The heterotrophic bacteria are assumed to consume assimilable organic carbon. Autotrophs are ammonia oxidizing bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria species which are responsible for nitrification processes. Moreover, Disinfection By-Products (DBPs) are also considered. Two numerical examples illustrate the derived model’s behaviour in normal and disturbance operational states.

Opis:
Poland’s third largest city, Lodz, underwent rapid industrial and demographic growth in the 19th and 20th centuries, followed by a steep decline over the last three decades. This paper describes how the water supply system has been adapted over the last century to meet these challenges, and in particular how the source of water (surface or underground) and structure of the supply system has been adapted to maintain drinking water quality. The Lodz water supply has been managed since 1925 by the firm Zaklad Wodociagow i Kanalizacji Sp. z o.o. The water supply system was designed by the Englishman William H. Lindley (in 1909), but because of World War I and the global depression that followed work began only in 1934. After World War II further deep wells were constructed, followed by a pipeline network and treatment plant. A 50-kilometre pipeline bringing surface water from the Pilica River was completed in 1955, followed by the Sulejowski Reservoir on the same river (1968–1973). Algal blooms on the reservoir presented a major challenge, and deep wells were turned to as a solution. By 2010 Lodz had 58 deep well intakes, so that in 2013 it was no longer necessary to take taking surface water from the Sulejowski Reservoir.

Opis:
Underground water is one of the main sources of radon for households. This article focuses on the estimation and removal of radon from underground water using the technology and inorganic sorbents developed by EKSORB Ltd., Russia for liquid radioactive waste treatment in the nuclear power industry. The article presents the results of tests of a system for the removal of radon and radon daughters from water patented by EKSORB. This is achieved by filtering water through RATZIR sorbent, followed by periodic load regeneration. Over a period of three years, the plant is successful in removing radon from the water that had an initial radon content of approximately 1500 Bq/L to less than 60 Bq/L, without releasing radon to indoor/outdoor air.

Opis:
The adsorbent of bone char (BC), produced from the pyrolysis of crushed animal bones, was dominated by the mesopores of the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area. The optimal condition for defluoridation with BC was a pH level near 5.0. Chloride and nitrate ions could increase fluoride adsorption capacity in contrast with the effect of sulfate and carbonate ions. The interchangeability between fluoride and hydroxyl groups on BC sorbent was proved by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Langmuir equation had a better correlation coefficient than the Freundlich equation at various temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters such as Delta G degrees, Delta H degrees, Delta S degrees, Ea and S*, have been calculated to describe the nature of fluoride adsorption onto BC. Negative Delta G degrees and Delta H degrees values at various temperatures indicate a spontaneous process, and its exothermic effect, respectively. However, a positive Delta S degrees value represents an increasing process for entropy. The E-a and S* values ranging from 5 to 40 kj.mol-1 and 0 to 1, respectively, demonstrated that the adsorption is dominated by physical process, although the adsorption kinetic process was involved external diffusion, intraparticle diffusion and chemical reaction equilibrium stage. A high concentration of NaOH solution increases efficiency of removing adsorbed F- ions from the BC surface.

The decision supporting method for hydraulic sensor placement in Drinking Water Distribution System (DWDS) considered together with unmeasured variable estimation problem and under uncertainty conditions is proposed in the paper. The sensor allocation problem was formulated as a multiobjective optimisation problem. The two types of objective functions were considered during solving this problem: quality of estimates of unmeasured variables and cost connected with a new measurement point construction. A new hybrid method which integrates a multiobjective genetic algorithm and a set bounded estimation method to solve the sensor allocation problem is proposed. The proposed method was applied to a real water network (Chojnice DWDS) and its performance was validated by simulations.

In this study, after the pulse shape calibration of a liquid scintillation counting (LSC) spectrometer (Quantulus 1220), the efficiency was determined depending on sample quenching parameters. Then, gross alpha and beta activities in two spiked water samples obtained from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were used for the validation of the ASTM D7283-06 method, which is a standard test method for alpha and beta activity in water by LSC. Later, the drinking water samples (35 tap water and 9 bottled water) obtained from different districts of Ankara, Turkey, were measured. The maximum gross alpha activities are measured to be 0.08 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.13 Bq/L for bottled waters, whereas the maximum gross beta activities are found to be 0.18 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.16 Bq/L for bottled waters. These results indicate that these drinking water samples are below the required limits, which are 0.1 Bq/L for alpha emitting radionuclides and 1 Bq/L for beta emitting radionuclides. As a result, gross alpha and beta activities in drinking water of Ankara were determined accurately by this validated LSC method. It is also worth noting that LSC is a rapid and accurate method for the determination of gross alpha and beta activities without requiring a tedious sample preparation.

Drinking water samples were collected from 501 points in five cities located in south Poland - Kraków, Myszków, Jaworzno, Racibórz and Kamienna Góra, using the random daytime sam-pling method (RDT). All samples were collected by trained samplers from randomly chosen buildings, at random hours and without prior flushing. Analysis of chemical composition of water samples was conducted at the certified Hydrogeochemical Laboratory of AGH - University of Science and Technology in Kraków. Concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cr, Zn, Al, Cd, Mn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Fe) and major ions (Na, Ca, Mg, K, Cl-, SO42-, HCO3¯) were measured. The principal component analysis was performed. The dimension reduction was made on the basis of major ions. Two principal components were used: the first one was dependent on the concentration of Cľ , SO42-, NaandK, and the second one included the concentration of Mg, Ca and HCO-. The analysis indicated a diversity of the results in virtue of sampling site. Three groups of results were clearly indicated: the first one represented water samples from Kraków and Kamienna Góra, the second one - samples from Myszków and Racibórz, and the third group was were the samples collected in Jaworzno. This diversity results from the type of water intake (groundwater and surface water), manner of water water supply systems.

Water in the nature is not distributed in sufficient quality and quantity in time and space to meet water demands in line with the requirements for safe drinking water. In the past, water was free for all and one could use it without any restrictions for his needs. Drinking water consumption increases due to the impact of demographic trends and the level of water supply as well as technological and industrial development. Meeting the demands is more difficult because of limited possibilities of increasing food production due to pollution and increasing demands for use of natural resources.

There is growing interest in the research community to apply the various techniques pertaining to geospatial technology, with the advance part of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS). This technology has been proven to be very essential in this identification and resolving the problem of water resource and allied water supply management. Considering the capabilities of geospatial techniques, the tools and techniques of similar disciplines used for gravity-based drinking water supply management in the hilly area where the human habitat is settled at foothill places. An attempt has been made in this paper to avail the use of tools and techniques of geospatial techniques for gravity-based water supply management at the village level. The Karule village is the part of central Maharashtra in India chosen for implementation of present bid. It was observed that, three-dimensional remote sensing data derived from space-borne satellite could be useful for gravity-based drinking water supply management with the help of other spatial and non-spatial database. Satellite-derived data and its incorporation with GIS and ground inventory data would be advantageous for delineation of such gravity-based water supply management in the similar area of world.

Groundwater is a key source of drinking water in Jordan. This study was conducted to assess the suitability of groundwater in major groundwater basins in Jordan for drinking purposes. The groundwater quality data from sixteen sampling stations within one-year-monitoring period from March 2015 to February 2016 were used. Weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) with respect to the Jordanian standards for drinking water was used for quality assessment. Sixteen Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters were selected to calculate WQI. The result showed that all physical and chemical parameters were almost below the maximum allowable level based on the Jordanian standards for drinking. On the other hand, the microbiological parameter (i.e. E.coli count) was exceeded the maximum allowable limit in all the studied locations based on the Jordanian standards for drinking water. The computed WQI values range from 40 to 4295. Therefore, out of 16 studied locations, three locations are classified in the “Excellent water” class, nine locations as a “Good water” class, one as a “Poor water” class, two as a “very poor water” class, and one as a “water unsuitable for drinking purpose” class. Furthermore, Escherichia coli is considered the most effective parameter on the determination of WQI in this study. This result highlighted the importance of including the microbiological parameters in any drinking water assessment, since they reflect with other physical and chemical parameters the actual condition of water quality for different purposes.

Opis:
The current study was undertaken to assess the physicochemical quality of the Kufranja dam (KD) surface water in northern Jordan during the summer and winter seasons [2019]. The samples were analyzed for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, major cations, major anions, and heavy metals. Most of the physicochemical parameters exhibited a similar spatial distribution, where the maximum concentrations were observed at the dam’s entrance, while the minimum concentrations were recorded at the dam’s end. This indicates that the factors affecting their occurrence and distribution are the same, including natural discharges from the surrounding catchment areas, weathering products, agricultural activities, and wastewater effluents that enter the dam via Wadi Kufranja. All the physicochemical parameters and heavy metals in KD water lie below the maximum permissible levels of the Jordanian and international standards for drinking and irrigation, except for EC values that are above WHO standards for drinking. The application of the water quality index (WQI) depicts that the KD water is chemically unsuitable for use in drinking and needs proper treatment before use. The irrigation indices (SAR, Na%, and MH) indicate that the KD water is chemically suitable for irrigation, whereas EC results and USSL diagram showed that the dam’s water is suitable for irrigation and belongs to the categories of good to permissible for irrigation. Therefore, KD water is suitable for irrigation of most soils (except soils with low salt tolerance). Crops with good salt tolerance are recommended and a special treatment of salinity might be required.

Groundwater is the main resource used to meet the people’s drinking water and irrigation needs of the Ain Oussera plain, because of the lack of surface-water resources. This paper intended to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for agriculture and drinking in the Ain Oussera plains. The data of the study were gathered and analyzed from twenty (20) groundwater samples collected to assess the plain groundwater quality, using the Water Quality Index (WQI) and GIS, carried out on physico-chemical parameters, including potential of hydrogen (pH), total dissolved solids (TDS) electrical conductivity (EC), potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), magnesium (Mg2+), and calcium (Ca2+) and major anions (Cl, HCO3, NO3, SO4), as well as, the water suitability test for agricultural purposes, using the sodium adsorption ratio. These parameters were inserted into the GIS platform to create a spatial distribution map for each parameter using the inverse interpolation technique (IDW). The results indicated that the concentrations are within the Algerian permissible limits. The water quality index (WQI), which evaluates the suitability of water for consumption, varies from 31 to 173 with an average value of 81. 70% of the samples from the Ain Oussera plain fall within the excellent and good quality categories. Its water is suitable for consumption (WQI < 100), while 30% is in the poor water category. From the calculation of SAR values, it was found that 90% of the groundwater samples are considered excellent and suitable for irrigation. According to the classification of the United States Salinity Laboratory USSL, the Ain Oussera water quality is classified as poor for irrigation purposes.

The analysis carried out showed that the cations trend in most of the groundwater samples is on the order of Ca2+˃Na+˃Mg2+˃K+ and the anions trend is on the order of HCO3-˃SO42-˃Cl-. Stabler diagram demonstrated the predominance of Ca2+- HCO3- hydro-chemical facies (80%). Moreover, the parameters, such as sodium adsorption ratio, percentage sodium, residual sodium carbonate, permeability index, Kelly’s ratio, potential salinity, and magnesium hazard were evaluated for the suitability of groundwater for irrigation. The values obtained in this investigation concluded that most of the groundwater samples are suitable for irrigation. From the other approach, the Water Quality Index (WQI) for drinking was also used in the current study. WQI ranged from 72.46 to 506.426, indicating that 40% of the samples were suitable for drinking however, 60% of them belong to the poor to unsuitable category of drinking water in terms of physicochemical properties, according to the World Health Organization norms.
