Opis:
This paper analyses different senses of the French verb boire, especially those that can be paraphrased by ‘swallowing liquid’, the most easily associated with this verb. To these meanings correspond in Polish the imperfective form pić and some perfective verbs, such as wypić, napić się and przepić. The semantico-syntactic analysis of the verb boire will be followed by the Polish equivalents of each construction. The objective is to observe regularities in the choice of the Polish equivalent of each French structure. The results will be able to enrich the information for bilingual dictionaries and for machine translation.

Basing on the two most influential theories in the literature on idiom comprehension (Glucksberg 2001; Vega Moreno 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as on the account of familiar metaphor comprehension (Wilson – Carston 2006), the present author proposes an account of comprehension of familiar idioms as metaphorical expressions. Unfamiliar metaphors are comprehended on-line in a relevance-guided comprehension procedure which involves adjustment of concepts encoded in idiom constituents. When the metaphorical denotation of the idiom is memorised, the well-known idiomatic string is comprehended just as familiar metaphors in the sense of Wilson – Carston (2006), i.e. in the process of disambiguation of two encoded senses.

Opis:
This study is concerned with L2 Japanese learners’ interpretation of scopally ambiguous sentences containing negation and universal quantifier using prosodic cues. It has been argued, in previous literature, that native adult speakers of English as well as Japanese interpret such sentences both on their surface (total negation) as well as inverse scope (partial negation) readings in the presence of prosodic cues. The present study shows, however, that L2 Japanese speakers predominantly favor the total negation reading even in situations where the prosodic cues point them to the partial reading. These outcomes indicate that L2 learners of Japanese do not attach “optimal relevance” to prosodic cues when disambiguating scopally ambiguous sentences. The results also imply that for L2 Japanese learners, clues other than prosody may be required to carry out disambiguation.

Using the notion of predicate in the sense of an element structuring the sentence at the surface level, G. Gross arrives at an interpretation of linguistic facts that is valid for those who adopt the concept of semantic predicate as a tool for analysis. It belongs to the abstract level of meaning and is considered to be an essential part of the mechanism for disambiguation and selecting the meaning of lexemes or grammatical structures. This mechanism is particularly important in the context of machine translation where it is necessary to choose, in the bilingual transfer dictionary, the accurate equivalent of a polysemic lexeme in the target language.

Opis:
Word Sense Disambiguation in text remains a difficult problem as the best supervised methods require laborious and costly manual preparation of training data. On the other hand, the unsupervised methods yield significantly lower precision and produce results that are not satisfying for many applications. Recently, an algorithm based on weakly-supervised learning for WSD called Lexicographer-Controlled Semi-automatic Sense Disambiguation (LexCSD) was proposed. The method is based on clustering of text snippets including words in focus. For each cluster we find a core, which is labelled with a word sense by a human, and is used to produce a classifier. Classifiers, constructed for each word separately, are applied to text. The goal of this work is to evaluate LexCSD trained on large volume of untagged text. A comparison showed that the approach is better than most frequent sense baseline in most cases.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present several problems encountered by the editor compiling the Corpus of Wrocław University of Technology. The problems are connected with the application of the method of disambiguation of meanings of words in text (WSD – Word Sense Disambiguation) during the work on material of phraseological character. Any researcher using this method confronts the problem of the lack of semantic independence of words entering into the composition of fixed word combinations. The necessity to develop a unique procedure of conduct for this type of words, inclined the author of the article to experiment in the isolation of independent meanings of words co-forming phraseologisms and to make an attempt at their typologization. The isolation of such meanings has proved possible, although the accuracy of their description is very unstable: in some cases the motivation of semantic changes—which the meaning of a word undergoes under the influence of “being petrified” in a set phrase—is transparent, in other cases, however, we can speak of a hypothetical source of changes rather than a definite modification of meaning. It is worth mentioning here about the rigour imposed by the adopted WSD marking method: a set of all meanings which a given word form may assume in the analysed text must be entered into the database. That is why the problem of providing the definition of words forming phraseologisms is vital from the point of view of a linguist dealing with machine processing of language.

Opis:
The polysemic nature of words in natural languages causes a lot of problems in the process of translating texts, especially in automatic translation. The first part of the following paper is devoted to a brief analysis of the above mentioned phenomenon. The analysis is based on different kinds of chosen monolingual dictionaries. Next, the author shows the way in which automatic translator, placed on Google website, translates simple sentences including polysemic words from French into Polish. In the subsequent section of the paper the most important principles of the description of words based on the object oriented approach proposed by W. Banyś are briefly presented. The object oriented approach makes it possible to eliminate the mistakes whose coming into being results from the polysemic nature of words and which are done by a machine in the process of translating texts. The author has chosen several polysemic words which are then described with the use of object oriented approach.

Opis:
Word Sense Disambiguation Based on Large Scale Polish CLARIN Heterogeneous Lexical ResourcesLexical resources can be applied in many different Natural Language Engineering tasks, but the most fundamental task is the recognition of word senses used in text contexts. The problem is difficult, not yet fully solved and different lexical resources provided varied support for it. Polish CLARIN lexical semantic resources are based on the plWordNet - a very large wordnet for Polish - as a central structure which is a basis for linking together several resources of different types. In this paper, several Word Sense Disambiguation (henceforth WSD) methods developed for Polish that utilise plWordNet are discussed. Textual sense descriptions in the traditional lexicon can be compared with text contexts using Lesk’s algorithm in order to find best matching senses. In the case of a wordnet, lexico-semantic relations provide the main description of word senses. Thus, first, we adapted and applied to Polish a WSD method based on the Page Rank. According to it, text words are mapped on their senses in the plWordNet graph and Page Rank algorithm is run to find senses with the highest scores. The method presents results lower but comparable to those reported for English. The error analysis showed that the main problems are: fine grained sense distinctions in plWordNet and limited number of connections between words of different parts of speech. In the second approach plWordNet expanded with the mapping onto the SUMO ontology concepts was used. Two scenarios for WSD were investigated: two step disambiguation and disambiguation based on combined networks of plWordNet and SUMO. In the former scenario, words are first assigned SUMO concepts and next plWordNet senses are disambiguated. In latter, plWordNet and SUMO are combined in one large network used next for the disambiguation of senses. The additional knowledge sources used in WSD improved the performance. The obtained results and potential further lines of developments were discussed.

Machine translators such as those offered by Google, Deep, ChatGPT and others are already using NMT systems. They apply the techniques of artificial intelligence that are constantly being developed, so they are currently providing increasingly correct and suitable translations. In the first part of this article, the author examines the case of the French verb louer by having it translated in different contexts by three automatic translators mentioned to see how effective they currently are as translation tools. Next, the verb louer is presented and analyzed as seen through the prism of the Antidote 8 dictionary. The last part of the article is devoted to the French-Polish description of the verb studied using the Object-Oriented Approach, with the aim of disambiguating it and developing the system of syntactico-semantic rules (object classes, frames, scripts) enabling the appropriate automatic translation of sentences in which it may appear.

The main topic of this paper deals with a general description of the notion of the class of objects, its historical draft and development in linguistic studies (generative grammar of N. Chomsky, semantic markers in the theory of J.J. Katz, J.A. Fodor, the predicate-argument structure of S. Karolak and the electronic dictionary of G.Gross). The author takes advantage of this concept in her analysis basing on object-oriented approach and the disambiguation by W. Banyś. This article demonstrates also that the disambiguation of the meaning of polysemic word pass by a correct choise of a class of objects which is the only solution to provide adequate equivalents in the target language and the condition of the effective and satisfying translation supported by computer.
