Opis:
Handicapped people have to encounter many difficulties and limitations. They are facing barriers, which mostly impede their normal life in public space. They often need to change their plans or even the whole life. However, amongst them we can either find individuals who cannot handle their own disability or the ones that have never given up their dreams and passions, still heading for self-development. One of them is Jarosław Kailing – the member of the Polish National Team in adaptive rowing who, despite the accident he experienced, is still fighting and winning (both in sport and life).

Opis:
Research on the attitudes towards disabilities has a long tradition, but it requires constant replication due to the frequent changes in the living conditions and the educational system. In recent years in Poland, such research was carried out mainly on a college level (Bi-ernat, 2014; Urbanski, Glapa, Śleboda, 2014) and it was not related to any specific disability. In this study, however, there has been an attempt to find an answer to the question: what are the attitudes of the students at a third grade of elementary school level to motor and auditory dis¬abilities of their peers. Participants were randomly selected from third grade primary schools: regular (n = 20) and integration (n = 20).In order to measure the pupils’ attitudes we have used a questionnaire, designed for the study, on the basis of a three-component model of attitudes prepared separately for each type of disability. The comparison of the results of these general attitudes and their components: cognitive, emotional and behavioural showed no significant differences between the groups, both with physical and auditory disabilities. Children from the regular schools presented positive at¬titudes towards people with disabilities just as their peers from the integration schools, which could mean that prior contact, with respect to the declared attitude towards disability is not limited to the type of school anymore. The explanation for the lack of differences between groups can be found in the educational and systemic changes, involving the inclusion of children and adults with various disabilities in a number of areas of life activity as well as the presence of ethical education in the curriculum of primary schools.

The article addresses the issue of dating barriers of women with physical disability. This phenomenon was presented with reference to available research results and analysis. Dating barriers were described considering division of external and internal barriers. External barriers considered social issues which encompassed negative stereotypes, patterns, attitudes and architectural barriers. Internal barriers related directly women with physical disability including their attitudes towards oneself, self-esteem and social skills. The analysis showed that the women with physical disability may have more difficulty in finding partners and forming personal relationships leading to intimacy than do women without disabilities.

Introduction: Volition is a determinant psychological factor in the improvement of the performance of the human behavior. The aim of the study was to analyze the volitional qualities; persistence, purposefulness and expediency based on personal characteristics and disability-related characteristics. Material and methods: The participants in this study were 140 people with physical disabilities (n=107 men, and n=33 women) while 10 people did not state their gender. Their age ranging from 14 to 67 years. The participants filled the questionnaire Measure Athletes' Volition-Short (MAV-S). In addition following factors were put into analysis: gender, age, family status, education, occupational status, disability [congenital versus acquired], type of disability [spinal cord injury, brain palsy, amputation, poliomyelitis, muscular dystrophy and other type], form of exercise [sport activities - competitive versus recreational - and any activity], type of sport [team versus individual sports], type of experience [resistance, strength and skills], and form of games [Paralympic, European, National and Sectional]). Results: show that the people with physical disabilities who mainly take part in, physical activities manifest a high level volitional qualities (persistence, purposefulness, and expediency). Conclusions: Personal characteristics like form of exercise, type of sport (team, individual) and athletic experience play a moderating role in the existence of individual differences in volitional qualities.

Difficulties resulting from the social perception of people with disabilities, and the personal assessment of their own disability are important for her/his relationship with other people. Therefore, it is worth asking what the perceptions are, of those who experience psychosocial effects due to their physical disability, towards people with intellectual disabilities, hearing impairments, visual impairments, mental illnesses, as well as their own physically disabled group. To analyse the perception of people with a physical disability, the study explores three areas: the acceptance or rejection of society’s stigmatization towards persons with disabilities; integrative versus separative social orientations of people with physical disability; social preferences of people with physical disability regarding other disabled people. The research sample consisted of 75 people with physical disabilities, who suffer from damage to the locomotor system. The data was collected using a questionnaire The findings highlight that the response from those who were physically disabled agreed with the opinions of general society, not only with the issue of promoting integrated solutions and offering assistance, but also having the same preferences and opinions about specific types of disability. However, their perception regarding their own group was noticeably different from that of general society.

The field of control of redundant articulated mechanical systems requires the use of algorithms to compute the inverse kinematics. The fields of animation, virtual reality or game in particular, are very interested in these algorithms. We propose in this paper a comparison between several algorithms of incremental type. The considered application concerns the accessibility evaluation of an environment used by a handicapped person (an apartment, a house, an institution…). The physical disability involves a particular characteristic of the human articulated structure that gives rise to constraints that must be taken into account in computing the inverse kinematics.

Objective. The aim of the research was to verify whether intellectually disabled people are responsive to motor stimulation, and whether the specific physical exercises, besides traditional rehabilitation and occupational therapy, would result in physical fitness enhancement. Materials and methods. The research was carried out on 259 persons with moderate and significant intellectual disability, participants of occupational therapy workshops. They were divided into two groups: a control group that underwent traditional rehabilitation treatment and occupational therapy, and an experimental group that additionally performed feasible physical exercises for 10 months. Participants’ body mass and height were measured to calculate their body mass index (BMI). Physical fitness was assessed with the Eurofit Special test and additional balance tests, at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Results. The results showed that the body mass of both men and women increased in the control group, and was reduced in the experimental group. The results of the physical fitness tests were more varied, in which the control group obtained similar results in the repeated measurements, and the experimental group significantly improved the initial results after 10 months of performing the feasible physical exercises. Conclusions. The applied physical exercises performed in the experimental group were effective because they caused body mass loss and significant improvement in physical fitness.

Opis:
The article unwraps notions related to young African women’s lifeworld experiences of physical disability. The study is positioned in the broad context of the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, existential sociology, the social construction of reality, feminist disability theory, and intersectionality. Focus is given to the way social systems of cultural oppression and discrimination impact women with physical impairments and manifest in how they perceive and make meaning of their everyday life experiences. Women with physical impairments often experience a double measure of oppression-being both female and disabled. When these women try to engage in a normal life and interact with others, they experience barriers imposed on them by their social reality-particularly in the form of cultural norms and patriarchal ideals. There are also instances where participants demonstrate resilience in the face of negative social stereotyping, instances that clearly show that they are not different, and do not perceive themselves as being different to able-bodied women. Drawing on semi-structured in-depth interviews with eight young Black women who are living with physical disabilities in Lesotho, the objective of this article is to examine their everyday life experiences within a predominantly able-bodied society.

It presents below only the results concerning the basic information of physical recreation of this social group, without the analysis of the conditionality of the participations in this kind of leisure time activities. The study results indicate that the participation of people with disabilities in physical recreation near and away from their place of residence is low. Respondents prefer weekend activity near their place of residence and the forms of recreation are not very diverse. They usually use small recreation and sports facilities or they use outdoor infrastructure. Enhanced involvement of people with disabilities in physical recreation together with personalized, adjusted to a given dysfunction offer is required.

Introduction: According to cognitive identity theory internal components can be likely to influence athletic identity formation. The purpose of the present study was to examine relationship between athletic identity of people with physical disabilities and goal perspectives (task and ego) and volitional competences (persistence, purposefulness and expedience). Material and methods: The participants were 134 people with physical disability (n=103 men, and n=31 women). Their age ranging from 14 to 67 years (M=34.98, SD=10.59). All participants participated in physical activities (competitive and recreational). The subjects filled in three questionnaires: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), Task and Ego Orientation in Sports Questionnaire (TEOSQ) and Measure Athletes' Volition - Short (MAV-S). Results: The results revealed that goal orientations and volitional competencies can be predictors of athletic identity dimensions for people with disabilities participating in physical activities. In addition, they suggested that task orientation predicts the three identities (social β=0.43, exclusivity β=0.31 and negative affectivity β=0.38), purposefulness competence predicts two identities (social β=0.34 and exclusivity β=0.30), while persistence competence predicts the negative affectivity identity (β=0.49). Conclusions: In conclusion, dispositional factors achievement goals and volitional competencies can be predicting the athletic identity dimensions.

Introduction: Every year in Poland spinal cord injury occurs in about 800 people. They have to learn to live in a completely new world suited to the skills and abilities of healthy people. The aim of the research was to find out how the adaptation to self-disability among people with paraplegia proceeds in relation to its duration. Material and methods: 40 people with spinal cord injury took part in the research. They were divided into two groups according to the duration of their disability: up to two years of disability and from five years on. In the research the “Psycho-social adaptation” anamnesis created by the author of this paper was used. Its questions covered four categories: Attitude towards self-disability; Interpersonal relations; Work and recreation; Plans, desires, dreams. Results: Persons with a shorter course of paraplegia more often emphasized the negative sides of their disability: barriers, their own defects and restraints. On the other hand, persons with a longer course of paraplegia were aware of their limitations, but they were also able to point out a lot of positive sides of their disability. Conclusion: The research has confirmed the fact that a longer period of disability leads to better adaptation to it, but further analyses with a larger group of the examined is necessary. It must also be taken into consideration that the course of time is just one of many factors positively affecting the adaptation process.

For social activation of people with physical disability, it is very important to identify factors which motivate volunteers to take unpaid services for people with disabilities. The aim of this study was to present the situation of women with disabilities on the labour market. Women with disabilities suffer from social and professional discrimination. They are discriminated because of their gender and disability. The Q1 Labour Force Participation Study (2013) showed that, in Poland, labour force participation for men and women with disabilities was 29.4% and 14.7%, respectively, while the unemployment rate was 16.1% for men and 17.2% for women. Quarterly information on employment, unemployment and economic inactivity was gathered from a Labour Force Survey in the first quarter of 2013; data from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy were also included. The participants of the survey were 15 years old or older; they were members of a sample household. The methodology was based on definitions recommended by the International Labour Office and Eurostat. It is important that women with disabilities are substantially less professionally active, while the unemployment rate for them is only slightly higher.
