Opis:
Purpose: While the product-market typology model seems to be best understood and widely embraced by large corporates, it is less noticeable among many small businesses. This article adopts the aforementioned framework to identify and empirically analyze impactful strategies on various measures of growth associated with rural Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa. Methodology: Using data from a survey of a probability sample of 148 owner-managed small businesses, Exploratory Factor Analysis test was conducted to test for internal scale consistency of the data. In the analysis: six predictor variables formed the growth strategies, while growth measures comprised three variables, then fitted into a prepared regression model. Results: The regression model reveals the use and implementation of market penetration and pricing strategies which have a positive and significant impact on the SMME’s growth. Findings further suggest that – while the gender of the owner-manager has no influence on the growth of the SMMEs – immigrant SMMEs seem to perform better compared to ventures owned by other race categories. Overall growth of SMMEs is generally more driven by customer base, competitive advantage, and customer satisfaction. Implications: The implication for rural SMMEs amid the uncertainties and challenges in the developing economies, is that certain strategies act as a catalyst for growth and performance. The findings may be used to develop policies that promote entrepreneurship in South Africa and other developing countries. Originality/value: The paper’s unique contribution is that virtually no study yet attempted to apply the product-market typology model holistically to investigate its influence on the growth of rural SMMEs in a developing country.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – Exchange rate volatility has remained a serious issue affecting economic stability, especially in developing countries. Thus, this study aimed at examining the impact of exchange rate volatility on economic growth in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model and the system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique to analyse the time series data from the period January 1980 to December 2017. The study used the Augmented Dickey–Fuller and Philips–Perron tests to determine the presence of a unit root and the Johansen co-integration test to establish the relationship among the variables in the study. Findings – The results of the estimates offer evidence that exchange rate volatility persists throughout the study period, and has a negative and significant effect on the economic growth of Nigeria. This result suggests that excessive volatility due to low inflows is inimical to the growth of the Nigeria economy. The findings of the study demonstrate a negative and significant relationship between inflation and economic growth. Moreover, while credit to the private sector and crude oil prices exerts positive and significant relationship with growth, the relationship between money supply, trade openness and government expenditure and economic growth is positive but insignificant. Research implications/limitations – Therefore, it is important for the government to pursue policies and programs that would help ensure exchange rate stability and boost local production for both consumption and export. In addition, a holistic program of economic reforms is important to complement the exchange rate policy and stimulate economic growth. Originality/value/contribution – The study shed some light on exchange rate volatility and confirmed its adverse effect and the importance of a stable environment on economic growth. In addition, the study introduced crude oil prices as a variable to the study of exchange rate volatility and economic growth from a developing country perspective.

Opis:
Travel behaviour studies in activity-based perspective treat travel as a result of individual’s desire to participate in different activities. This approach is more significant in the context of developing countries, as the transportation problems are more severe here. Since, commuters contribute to a major share in the travel, understanding their travel behaviour is essential. This paper aims to explore the travel behaviour of commuters in Calicut city, Kerala State, India and thereby model their activity-travel patterns. Household, personal and activity-travel information from 12920 working people and 9684 students formed the database for this study. The data collection was performed by means of home-interview survey by face-to-face interview technique. From preliminary analysis, several simple and complex tours were identified for the study area. Working people’s work participation and students’ education activity participation decision are modelled as mandatory activity participation choice in a binary logit modelling framework. Results of this mandatory activity participation model revealed that male workers are more likely to engage in work compared to females. Presence of elderly persons is found to negatively influence the work participation decisions of workers. This may be due to the fact that, work activity may be partially or completely replaced with the medical requirements of the elderly. The chances for work activity participation increase with increase in number of two-wheelers at home. In the case of students, as the education level increases, they are found to be less likely to participate in education activities. Students are observed to follow simple activity-travel pattern. Complex tours are found to be performed by males, compared to females. Activity-travel pattern of the study group are predicted using the developed models. The percentages correctly predicted indicate reasonably good predictability for the models. These kind of studies are expected to help the town planners to better understand city’s travel behaviour and thus to formulate well-organised travel demand management policies.

Opis:
(fragment tekstu)

Opis:
The global demand for organic foods has inspired the academicians and practicing professionals to explore consumer purchase behavior in this sector. The multiple promises that organic foods hold for the future – like sustainable food production, food safety, food security, nutrition and reduction of green-house gases – all might have influenced the recent rise of behavioral research in the organic food sector. Interestingly, Bangladesh has been a producer of organic foods since the early ‘80s; however, only a handful of studies could be traced that actually studied consumer behavior in this sector. The current paper explored the important roles that organic foods might play in Bangladesh, synthesized findings of past studies under Bangladesh context, and justified probable areas that might be investigated in future. Therefore, plausible gaps were explored in the existing literature pertaining to Bangladesh context and a tentative research agenda for future researchers was proposed.

To achieve ergonomics awareness in 3 subsidiary companies, an intervention team was formed. The aims of this study were to implement basic ergonomics through a participatory ergonomics intervention process that can support a continuous learning process and lead to an improvement in health and safety as well as in the work systems in the organization. The findings of this study (i.e., method, continuous learning and integration) were key to making the participatory ergonomics intervention successful. Furthermore, 4 issues of the ergonomics checkpoints (i.e., work schedules, work tasks, healthy work organization and learning) for assessing the work system were found suitable for both changing work schedules and for improving the work system. This paper describes the result of this project and also the experiences gained and the conclusions reached from using the International Labour Office’s ergonomics checkpoints in the industries of industrially developing countries.
