Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono propozycję wykorzystania krzywych ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) i CAP (Cummulative Accuracy Profile) w doborze zmiennych objaśniających w modelu prawdopodobieństwa. Kryterium doboru zmiennych opiera się na wartościach miar dyskryminacji wyznaczonych na podstawie krzywych ROC/CAP jak i uwzględnia sam kształt krzywych.
The article presents a proposal of using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) and Cumulative Accuracy Profile (CAP) curves as a ranking-based method for a choice of regressors in probability model. The criterion of reggresors’ choice uses the value of summary statistics of discrimination based on ROC/CAP curves as well as it takes into account the shape of the curves itself.

Opis:
Several possibilities to present and to interpret the results of granulometric analyses of Quaternary fluvial, aeolian, glacial and wash-out slope deposits were investigated. Attention is paid particularly to the cumulative curves at a probability scale and the frequency curves, and it is shown how these curves can help to determine the sedimentary environment. The inclination of the cumulative curves in the part of the maximum proportion of a particular grain size appears significant. It appears possible to obtain information on the density and dynamics of the transporting medium from the course of the cumulative curves (inclination and spread of grain size). The examination of textural parameters allows to draw regression lines characteristic of both deposits from various sedimentary environments and deposits from one single environment but with different histories as to their transport dynamics.

Opis:
Ideas and results published in two papers by R. L. Cruz in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory in 1991 gave rise to what is called now network calculus. A key role in it plays a certain inequality characterizing the behaviour of cumulative traffic curves. It defines the so-called burstiness constraint by which many kinds of traffics can be described, as for example those occurring in computer networks. Interpretation of this constraint, which can be expressed in two equivalent forms: with and without the use of min-plus convolution, can be found in papers of R. L. Cruz. Nothing however was said about how to obtain it practically, for example, for each of representatives of a family of measured cumulative traffic curves being upperbounded. This problem is tackled in this paper, and as a result, a relation between the Cruz's constraining function and an upper-bounding function of measured traffic curves is found. The relation obtained is quite general and valid also for the case of non-fulfilment of the so-called sub-additivity property by traffic curves. For the purpose of its derivation, a notion of sub-additivity property with some tolerance Δ was introduced, and the corresponding theorem exploiting it formulated and proved. Further, to complement discussion of the above relation, a minimal burstiness constraint was added to the original Cruz's inequality and related with a lower bound of a family of measured cumulative traffic curves. The derivations presented in this paper are illustrated by examples.

Opis:
Rain attenuation is a major challenge to microwave satellite communication especially at frequencies above 10 GHz, causing unavailability of signals most of the time. Rain attenuation predictions have become one of the vital considerations while setting up a satellite communication link. In this study, rain attenuation models, cumulative distribution curves and other analytical tools for successful prediction of rain attenuation are presented. A three year Rain rate data was obtained from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) database in addition to experimental data. Of the three prediction models used in the study, Ajayi model gave the range of values closest to the experimental data. A correctional factor was determined as 1.0988 and used to modify the Ajayi model. This modification to Ajayi’s model enabled its rain attenuation values conform more closely to the experimental result.

Opis:
In order to compare the results of the reconstructions of depositional environment of sediments performed using the C/M diagram (Passega, Byramjee 1969) and the cumulative curve analysis (Visher 1969), 49 samples of overbank sediment were collected in the valley of the Dunajec River. The samples were collected from the fill of an abandoned channel on the floodplain of the lower Dunajec (17 km from its mouth) and from the floodplain of the Dunajec in the backwater of the Czorsztyn Reservoir and analysed used the laser diffraction and sieve methods. A cumulative curve analysis of the samples located in the fields of dominant deposition from traction in the C/M diagram (Fields I, II, III, IX) showed that the dominant type of their transport prior to deposition was saltation and suspension (81%), while traction amounted to an average of 19%. In the fields of the C/M diagram corresponding to the deposition of graded suspension under the conditions of high (Field IV) and moderate turbulence (Field V), the dominant type of sediment transport before deposition was saltation, whose amounted to 78–86% (Field IV) and 50–76 % (Field V). In the fields of the C/M diagram indicating deposition from graded suspension transported in conditions of low turbulence (VI) and uniform suspension of varied grain size (VII), the dominant type of transport prior to deposition was suspension, amounting to 35–94%. Sediments located in the field of the C/M diagram corresponding to the finest uniform suspension and pelagic suspension (Field VIII) were in 91–95% transported in suspension prior to deposition.
