    The dynamic development of industry in Konin and its vicinity launched in the 1950s and the issuing inflow of population from different regions have altered the character and perception of Konin and the Konin District. In view of all these new phenomena, it is of major importance to culturally define the latter. It is monuments that constitute one of the essential values consolidating historical awareness and cultural identity of a nation and, within it, of small communities (Heimats). Monuments create priceless legacy passed on from generation to generation, while building the prestige of, not only, the place where they are located, but also, of the whole region. Today’s territory of the Konin District differs from its historical boundaries, altered and trimmed after Poland’s partitions in the late 18th c. The cultural identity of the region was for many centuries shaped by an impressive set of monuments present within the pre-partition Konin District. Also today, the rich legacy of monuments should contribute to the cultural identity and development strategy of the region. The high quality of the historic substance and the Konin Region’s attractive leisure offer promise a strong tourist branding of the ‘Konin District’ whose promotional motto could read: ‘The Konin District - rich in nature and culture’.

    Rozważania niniejsze odnoszą się do losów i kondycji dziedzictwa kulturowego Górnych Łużyc, w tym przede wszystkim tej ich części, która w konsekwencji podziałów politycznych po 1945 r. przypadła Polsce. Istotną częścią pracy jest analiza stosunku mieszkańców Bogatyni (miejscowości położonej na polsko-niemieckim pograniczu w południowo-zachodniej części Polski, w woj. dolnośląskim) do wpisanych w krajobraz kulturowy miasta domów przysłupowych. Ich zły stan techniczny skłania do refleksji nad przyczynami słabo wykształconej potrzeby ochrony wpisanego w przestrzeń regionu dziedzictwa kulturowego. Stawiając tezę o wiodącej roli czynnika ludzkiego (w postaci niskich parametrów kapitału ludzkiego), akcentujemy tu również znaczenie czynników historycznego i gospodarczego. Poszukując sposobów ratowania unikatowej w skali europejskiej architektury przysłupowej, odwołujemy się do wybranych przykładów podjętej w ostatnich latach współpracy pomiędzy doświadczającymi zbliżonych problemów społecznościami lokalnymi polsko-czesko-niemieckiego trójpunktu.
    This article refers to the experiences and conditioning of the cultural legacy of Upper Lusatia, particularly concerning this part, which in consequence of political divisions of 1945, fell to Poland and remained within its borders. The essential part of the reflections entails the analysis of the attitudes of Bogatynia residents (a town in the Polish-German borderland in the south-western Poland, Lower Silesia voivodship) towards the Upper Lusatian (Umgebindehaus) houses, being a part of their cultural landscape. The overall poor technical condition of the latter evokes reflection over the causes of insufficient need of the protection of this area, being a part of the regional cultural heritage. Putting forward the thesis of the leading the role of human factor (i.e. low parameters of the human capital), the significance of historical and economic factors is also emphasized. Seeking ways of saving unique in the European scale Upper Lusatian architecture, the author makes reference to some selected examples of different modes of cooperation undertaken in the course of the recent years between the local communities experiencing similar problems in the Polish-Czech-German tripoint.

    Revitalisation is nowadays one of the most frequently used notions related to the renovation and reclamation of cities as well as restoration of splendour to areas and facilities. It should be remembered, however, that revitalisation is also a process of social renewal (social projects) and revival of the economic space of a city or a region. Well-maintained, original, historic urban space also becomes an inspiration for the development of many socio-cultural initiatives, enriching the offer of the city and making it attractive for both the residents and representatives of the creative class, on whom, to a large extent, the economic growth of the city is dependent. This interdependence of caring for an attractive space and the development of other aspects of city life, including the economic one, also takes form of marketing activities that consist in promoting the cultural legacy of the city and region as a special "product" that distinguishes a particular area.

    Po II wojnie światowej wszystkie miasta, którym nadano rangę miasta wojewódzkiego, rozwijały się prężnie, stając się centrami zakładów przemysłowych i fabryk. Za możliwością pracy podążali masowo mieszkańcy okolicznych wsi i miasteczek, którzy częściowo osiedlali się w nowo powstających osiedlach robotniczych, a częściowo dojeżdżali do pracy komunikacją publiczną. Taki rozwój miasta wpłynął na decyzję o konieczności budowy dworca autobusowego w latach 70. XX wieku. Dzięki założeniom, jakie przyjęli projektanci, udało się stworzyć niespotykany na ówczesne czasy obiekt o nowatorskim układzie komunikacyjnym, niespotykanej kompozycji, nowoczesnej bryle i najnowocześniejszych, dostępnych w kraju rozwiązaniach technicznych. Obiekt, dzięki unikatowej architekturze, szybko stał się wizytówką Kielc i chlubą mieszkańców. W okresie przemian nastąpiło zahamowanie zarówno rozwoju przemysłu jak i transportu publicznego. Nieremontowany obiekt zaczął niszczeć, a przedsiębiorstwo wraz z dworcem zostało sprzedane. Kielecki dworzec PKS wprawdzie uniknął losu wielu innych świetnych dzieł architektonicznych powojennego modernizmu, które zostały wyburzone lub przebudowane, jednak dalej postępuje degradacja tego obiektu, stanowiącego niezwykłą wartość kulturową.
    After the World War II all cities granted the rank of the province capitals, throve becoming centres of an industrial plants and factories. Due to newly coming work opportunities, residents of local villages and small towns headed to the cities on a large scale. They partly settled in working-class housing estates and partly commuted with public transport. Such a development of the city influenced the decision on the need for constructing a bus station in 1970s. Thanks to assumptions accepted by the designers it was possible to create an extraordinary for contemporary times object of innovative communications system, unusual composition, modern structure and the most modern technical solutions available in the country. The object, thanks to its unique architecture, quickly became a calling card of Kielce and pride of residents. In the period of transformation, both the growth of industry and the public transport slowed down. Not renovated object started to deteriorate and the enterprise along with the station was sold. Kielce Bus Station admittedly avoided the fate of many other excellent architectural works of the post-war modernism which were knocked down or rebuilt. However, farther a decline of this object, constituting the extraordinary cultural value, is progressing.

The following case study of Łódź illustrates the general need for a change of approach towards cultural legacy management, especially in reference to more common heritage elements which are not under hard protection.
