Статья посвящена категории культурной памяти в переводе, которая в существенной степени влияет на переводческие решения. Автором подчеркивается, что теоретические положения зарубежных ученых, особенно Яна Ассмана и Мориса Хальбвакса, играют важную роль в осмыслении сложностей, с которыми приходится столкнуться переводчику. В статье отмечаются идентификационная и компенсаторная функции культурной памяти, ибо они ярчайшим образом проявляются в национальных мифах и других важных нарративах культуры оригинала и перевода. Учитывая достижения в области переводоведения, автор расценил как необходимое вписать понятие культурной памяти в уже существующие положения выдающихся теоретиков данной научной дисциплины. Существенными для настоящего исследования оказались работы Кшиштофа Хейвовского, Романа Левицкого, Анны Беднарчик, Фрица Пепке и других. Автором отмечается, что в культуре перевода добиться ассоциаций схожих, с возникающими в культуре подлинника, учитывая специфику культурной памяти народов-реципиентов, может оказаться задачей весьма сложной или порой невозможной. В статье сформулирован вывод о необходимости формировать переводческую компетентность в области культурной памяти. Автором проводится также классификация возможных проблем, мотивированных культурной памятью. Выделяются объективные, то есть сугубо онтологические, сложности и субъективные, определяющиеся человеческим фактором.
This paper is devoted to the category of cultural memory in translation, which has a major influence on decisions made by translators. The author highlights that the theoretical positions of foreign researchers, and especially of Jan Assmann and Maurice Halbwachs, have an important contribution to the understanding of the problems that the translator is confronted with. In the article there are also noticed identification and compensatory functions of cultural memory, as they are most prominent in national myths and other important narratives of the cultures of the original and translation. The author has considered as necessary to incorporate the concepts of cultural memory into the already existing statements of prominent theorists of Translation Studies, due to the achievements in the field of the translation studies. Significant for the present research were the works of Krzysztof Hejwowski, Roman Lewicki, Anna Bednarczyk, Fritz Paepcke and several others. This article points out that achieving associations similar to those of the original culture in the culture of translation, due to the specific cultural memory of the recipients, can be a very difficult or sometimes impossible task. The paper formulates the conclusion about the necessity to create translation competence in the area of cultural memory. Additionally, the author provides a classification of potential problems, which are motivated by cultural memory. The article identifies objective, that is, ontological, difficulties and subjective ones, which are determined by the human factor.

It focuses on the Victorian origins of Clifford’s thought and its relations to other major figures of the time. The historical elements are followed by a reconstruction of Clifford’s main points, including his major evidential thesis according to which “it is [morally] wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.” The most fierce critic of Clifford was William James; his arguments are presented and briefly commented upon with regard to their contemporary relevance. Nowadays the mankind is facing a crisis of political, social, cultural and anthropological spheres. This crisis is the consequence of the hegemony of our civilization’s pattern that subordinates the nature and the human being to the only logic of profit. This article poses the question of the cultural function of the philosophy in this context. The presented reflections attempt to answer this question first by explaining that philosophy should realize itself as the wisdom of serving both existence and co-existence. From this awareness comes its cultural function that can be defined as the triple task, which include not only the elements of criticism and alternative proposals to the crisis, but also the motivation or stimulation of the modern human being to become a resisting subject who engages in the fight for proper co-existence with the nature and the neighbourhood.
Ante la crisis política, social, cultural y también antropológica por la que atraviesa la humanidad hoy como consecuencia de la hegemonía de un modelo de civilización que somete a la naturaleza y al hombre a la lógica del lucro, el presente trabajo se pregunta por la función cultural que puede y debe asumir la filosofía en ese contexto. Las reflexiones que desarrollamos intentan responder a esa pregunta explicando, primero, que la filosofía debe tomar conciencia de su tradición como sabiduría para la vida y la convivencia; y, desde esa toma de conciencia, procurar, segundo, definir su función cultural hoy como una triple tarea que comprende los momentos de la crítica, de la propuesta de alternativas ante la crisis, pero también la de motivar o animar al hombre actual para que sea un sujeto que resiste y que se compromete en la lucha por una buena convivencia con la naturaleza y con sus semejantes.

Taking as its cue the 2016 quatercentenaries of the deaths of both Shakespeare and Cervantes, the essay offers some insights into the “transversal connections” between both events as celebrated in Spain and the UK. The questions it raises and attempts to resolve are fourfold: (1) What are the reasons and also the benefits of yoking together two such apparently disparate authors, whose strongest link is, arguably, the fact they both passed away in 1616? (2) What work is being done to restore these writers to life, especially in schools where, for a variety of reasons, literature has lost its core-curricular status, and in general society where the classics seem to have less and less import? (3) What might Shakespeare or Cervantes be said to stand for in their respective cultures, both in terms of the genres they wrote in (it is often forgotten, for instance, that Cervantes was also a poet and a dramatist) and the extra-literary values they are said to transmit? (4) What is the role of the State in the safeguarding and promotion of the nation’s cultural heritage?

This article examines the post-1945 reception of the work by Adam Strug – Miliardy. The posthumous novel presents the lives of several protagonists living in New York during the Great Depression (1929–1933). The article discusses the critical remarks formulated in the years 1945–1989, when the cultural policy of the Polish People’s Republic was politically subjugated to Marxist ideology. All those interconnections bore upon the reception and interpretation of Andrzej Strug’s literary works.

W artykule przedstawiono i poddano analizie publikowane w polskiej prasie sprawozdania i relacje z występów gościnnych Heleny Modrzejewskiej w teatrze polskim w latach 1867–1903. Znaczną część materiałów badawczych stanowią prasowe reakcje na występy aktorki po 1879, już jako gwiazdy teatru amerykańskiego. Autorka charakteryzuje zakres tematyczny artykułów i recenzji, analizuje ich leksykę, uwydatnia dominujące oceny, a także różnice między zainteresowaniami recenzentów i czytelników z różnych miast. Uwzględnia również materiały informacyjne, współtworzące publiczny wizerunek Modrzejewskiej jako gwiazdy, oraz wybrane materiały reklamowe, w których wykorzystywano ten wizerunek. Komentuje ponadto artykuły w polskiej prasie relacjonujące zagraniczne sukcesy aktorki, wierszowane utwory przekazujące wrażenia z występów oraz ilustracje, którymi uzupełniano teksty. Podkreśla, że chociaż ta bardzo obfita recepcja stanowi jeden z ważnych elementów tworzących legendę Modrzejewskiej jako najwybitniejszej polskiej aktorki i doskonałej odtwórczyni ról szekspirowskich, to wiele tekstów można uznać za cenne źródło poznania ulotnej sztuki aktorskiej. Artykuł jest bogato ilustrowany i zawiera aneks z kompletnym spisem recenzji i artykułów poświęconych występom gościnnym Modrzejewskiej.
This article presents and analyzes the reports and accounts published in the Polish press on Helena Modrzejewska's (Modjeska) guest performances in the Polish theater in the years 1867–1903. A significant part of the research materials are press reactions to the actress's appearances after 1879, already as a star of the American theater. The author characterizes the thematic range of the articles and reviews, analyzes their lexis, highlights the dominant assessments, as well as the differences between the focus of reviewers and readers from various cities. She also considers the news and brief sensational informations that contributed to the public image of Modjeska as a star, as well as selected publicity items that exploited this image. In addition, she comments on articles in the Polish press reporting on the actress's foreign successes, rhyming pieces conveying impressions of her performances, and the illustrations with which the texts were accompanied. She points out that although this extensive reception is crucial in creating Modjeska's legend and reputation as the most excellent Polish actress and Shakespearean performer, many of the analyzed texts provide valuable insights into the transient art of acting. The article is richly illustrated and supplemented with an appendix containing a comprehensive list of reviews and articles focused on Modrzejewska's guest appearances.

This essay was envisaged as a dialogue with Paweł Ciołkiewicz, author of the book Moje komiksy, Vol. 1, Od Tajfuna do Supermana [My Comics, Vol. 1, From Typhoon to Superman] (2019), who has for years been fascinated by the phenomenon of comics and made them the subject of scholarly reflection. When analyzing the history and contemporaneity of the comic book, he uses concepts from many fields familiar to sociologists, such as cultural anthropology, philosophy, history, psychology, and religious studies. In discussion with Ciołkiewicz, the author of the article addresses the following topics: (1) comics in the grid of academic concepts; (2) comics as an illustration of the fate of popular culture in the Polish People’s Republic and the USA; and (3) the comic book as myth. In summary, he recalls Ciołkiewicz’s statement that for him comics are not only an object to be studied but also an instrument for breaking through the veil of obviousness.

The goal of the present paper is to formulate a concise framework for part of Daniel Boyarin’s work which he is most known for, namely his analysis of sexuality in late antiquity Judaism and the critique of contemporary culture he eventually derived from it, above all his objections to the idea of the Jewish nation-state.  Within the brief scope here I intend to provide the reader with a simple roadmap for orienting oneself in Boyarin’s relevant literature. Boyarin, a Jewish-American scholar, traces rabbinic, Jewish-Hellenic, and Pauline texts that he believes were part of one arc of Jewish culture in Palestine of late antiquity, and reveals the discourse that was at the center of this one Jewish culture, namely that the famous debate between Judaism and Christianity was essentially over the interpretation of the physical body and sexuality in the Bible, a debate during which critical cultural decisions were made that still have an impact on Western society today in the realms of gender and identity. Through his original “cultural reading” that employs critical current postmodern methods, Boyarin demonstrates that both have complex ethical and political issues, such as rigid hierarchies, colonialism, and racism, but they also have a lot of promise, namely that by examining them side by side, the possibility of finding a more just alternative for our present and future is increased, through mutual correction of each other.
Celem artykułu jest nakreślenie ścisłych ram dla tej części twórczości Daniela Boyarina, z której jest on najbardziej znany, a mianowicie jego analizy seksualności w judaizmie późnego antyku i krytyki kultury współczesnej, którą ostatecznie wyprowadził tegoż, przede wszystkim zaś jego sprzeciwu wobec idei Żydowskiego państwa narodowego. W artykule zamierzam w zwięzły sposób zorientować czytelnika w literaturze Boyarina w interesującym nas zakresie. Boyarin jest żydowsko-amerykańskim badaczem, który analizuje teksty rabiniczne, żydowsko-hellenistyczne i paulińskie, a które jego zdaniem stanowiły fragment całości kultury żydowskiej w Palestynie późnego antyku. Ujawnia dyskurs leżący w centrum tej jednolitej kultury żydowskiej, argumentując, że słynny spór pomiędzy judaizmem a chrześcijaństwem dotyczył zasadniczo interpretacji ciała fizycznego i seksualności w Biblii, w trakcie którego podjęto krytyczne decyzje kulturowe, które do dziś wywierają wpływ na społeczeństwo zachodnie w sferze płci i tożsamości. Jego interpretacja kultury, w której Boyarin wykorzystuje współczesne metody krytyki postmodernistycznej, pokazuje, że obie religie mają złożone problemy etyczne i polityczne, takie jak sztywna hierarchia, kolonializm i rasizm, ale mają także duży potencjał – analizując je w zestawieniu, mamy większą możliwość znalezienia uczciwszej alternatywy dla naszej teraźniejszości i przyszłości, ponieważ obydwie religie wzajemnie się korygują.

The aim of this essay is to present an overview of shifting paradigms in Black Studies. I will critically look back on my own research on African American women writers of the so-called Second American Renaissance in an effort to determine to what extent theory can alter interpretation, and how theoretical position can ‘rewrite’ or ‘transform’ the books we read and analyze. I will show that my engagement with diasporic and postcolonial theories has enabled me a more polemical formulation of contemporary Afro-American women’s prose. I will also analyze how my experience with applying different literary and cultural theories and criticism impacted on my teaching of black American literature and literature in general.

The paper aims at investigating the demonstration of Russian intuition in the contemporary Russian speculative fiction. The research thesis is that the Russians, both presented in literature and within the frames of the national character studies, manifest themselves as the intuitive introvert type according to Carl Gustav Jung’s classification. For validating the thesis, as far as the proposed literary works are concerned, one should use the instruments offered by cultural literary criticism along with the support of non-literary disciplines, such as intercultural communication and ethnopsychology. Moreover, one should consider also notes on Russian national character taken by Jung himself as well as studies on the sociocultural aspect of the analysed works. A wide range of methods and perspectives allows deep research of the “feeling – intuitive” Jungian scale as manifested within literary characters representing the Russian element (also called Russianness) in the selected works, which belong to the most significant and/or popular pieces of contemporary speculative fiction in Russia.

This paper is an analysis of the discourse emerging around the novels by Stanisław Brzozowski in Poland between 1945 and 1989. The publishing timeline sets the background for the more important focus on the reception of his work. Three distinct periods are discussed – 1945–1956, when his novels were regarded as an aftermath of the interwar period, and thus banned under the Stalinist regime; 1956–1974, when his work wasfrequently reprinted and became a subject of historical and literary research; finally, 1974–1989, when Brzozowski’s novels came under proper academic scrutiny.

Im Artikel werden drei Perspektiven auf den gegenwärtigen Zustand der postmodernen Kultur dargestellt. Die erste etwas pessimistische und zwei separate Formen annehmende Perspektive wird dem gegensätzlichen optimistischen Denken gegenübergestellt, das man eher auf dem Boden der exakten Wissenschaften trifft. Zum Schluss dieses schwierigen Dialogs versucht der Autor die Möglichkeit zu entwerfen, einen versöhnlichen Standpunkt zu formulieren, den er als eine positive Kulturkritik oder als Technorealismus bezeichnet.
W artykule zostały przedstawione trzy spojrzenia na obecny stan kultury ponowoczesnej. Pierwsze z nich, dość pesymistyczne i przyjmujące dwie odrębne formy, zostaje zderzone z zupełnie przeciwstawnym myśleniem optymistycznym, spotykanym raczej na gruncie nauk ścisłych. Na koniec tego trudnego dialogu autor próbuje zarysować możliwość sformułowania stanowiska dość pojednawczego, które nazywa pozytywną krytyką kulturową lub technorealizmem
Presented are three contrasting views currently prevailing on the present-day state of postmodern culture. The most pessimistic one is juxtaposed with an optimistic perspective represented predominantly in the domain of exact sciences. The author is definitely in favour of adopting a possibly positive, techno-realistic and enthusiastic view in assessing the condition and development of postmodern culture.

This article is built on the premise that the topos has become a potent unit of cultural memory, an image that stores a wealth of often vague, buried or forgotten ideas. Its contents, like those of literature, tend to become extraordinarily condensed and confl ated; in consequence, some topoi (in particular the Holocaust topos) defy conventional tools of understanding and analysis. A solution to this problem can be found in an approach which broadens the scope of the sources of the Holocaust to include pop culture; gives up the rigid classifi cation of topoi, based on ‘hard’, documentary evidence; and, draws on a conceptual frame that connects the topos with the mechanisms of remembrance. A practical application of this approach is offered here in a series of readings of selected passages from Marcin Pilis’s novel The Meadow of the Dead (Łąka umarłych), Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s crime story A Grain of Truth (Ziarno prawdy), Marcin Wolski’s alternate history novel Wallenrod, Justyna Wydra’s war romance The SS-man and a Jewess (Esesman i Żydówka), Krzysztof Zajas’s thriller Oszpicyn [local Yiddish: Auschwitz] as well as some poems by Jacek Podsiadło from his volume The Breguet Overcoil (Włos Bregueta).

The article presents the thought of Czech dissident and essayist Josef Šafařík (1907–1992). A characteristic feature of Šafařík’s texts is deep criticism of culture. The sharpness of this criticism is directed against technocratic civilization, although it is not only a criticism of widely understood modernity. Šafařík sees the source of mankind’s existential crisis in religion, which legitimized technological progress and eventually led to the loss of the metaphysical aspect of humanity. Although this view is not isolated in (post)modern philosophy, Šafařík expressed it in a rather radical way: not so much to undermine the very foundations of European culture but to provoke in the reader a profound reinterpretation of established truths. In spite of the insightful criticism of religion, Šafařík’s texts are permeated by the metaphysical dimension, but the relation between human beings and transcendence is in this case reversed. According to Šafařík, the transcendental horizon is present only in the essence of man, not in the outer absolute, regardless of whether it is an absolute understood as an Idea, God, or Progress. The article presents analogies in the thought of Josef Šafařík, Jan Patočka and Jean-Francois Lyotard.
Artykuł przedstawia negatywną ocenę religii wyrażoną w eseistycznych tekstach czeskiego dysydenta i eseisty – Josefa Šafaříka (1907–1992). Charakterystyczną cechą tekstów Šafaříka jest głęboka krytyka kultury, która choć jest wycelowana przede wszystkim w technokratyczną cywilizację, nie jest wyłącznie oceną szeroko rozumianej nowoczesności. Josef Šafařík upatruje źródła egzystencjalnego kryzysu człowieka w ukształtowaniu kultury europejskiej poprzez religię, która legitymizując postęp techniczny, stała się przyczyną utraty przez człowieka zrozumienia dla tego, co metafizyczne. Według J. Šafaříka to właśnie religia wytworzyła dyktat finalizmu prowadzącego do dehumanizacji osoby ludzkiej. Choć pogląd ten nie jest w (po)nowoczesnej filozofii odosobniony, u autora dzieła Cestou k poslednímu zostaje wyrażony w prowokujący sposób – nie tyle po to, by podważyć same fundamenty kultury europejskiej, ile po to, by skłonić odbiorcę do dogłębnej reinterpretacji ustalonych prawd. Mimo surowej krytyki religii, jej kulturowej i społecznej roli, w tekstach Šafaříka cały czas obecny jest wymiar metafizyczny. Autor dokonuje jednak przeorientowania układu człowiek – metafizyka. Według niego horyzont transcendentalny obecny jest jedynie w istocie człowieka, nie w zewnętrznym absolucie, niezależnie od tego, czy jest to absolut rozumiany jako Idea, Bóg czy Postęp. W artykule ukazane są paralele pomiędzy myślą Josefa Šafaříka oraz Jana Patočki i Jeana-Francois Lyotarda.
