Opis:
We point out that there is more and more experiments showing the almost perfect localization of thirteen f-electrons in the canonical heavy-fermion system: YbRh₂Si₂. The revealing of the Yb³⁺ crystal-field (CEF) states confirms the Quantum Atomistic Solid State Theory. QUASST was the only theory, which has claimed from 1992 the existence of the discrete CEF electronic structure and the Kramers doublet ground state in heavy-fermion intermetallics. The removal of the on-site Kramers degeneracy via spin-dependent interactions is origin of the large specific heat at low temperatures (a hallmark of the heavy-fermion phenomena) and of low-energy neutral spin-like excitations. The Kondo resonance is related to the slight splitting of the Kramers doublet ground state of the Yb³⁺ ion.

Semi-empirical model developed by Yamada-Kato enables calculation of magnetic spin directions for R2Fe14B compounds, based on minimization of free energy, and - in further steps - determination of spin reorientation temperatures for transitions from basal plane to axial easy magnetization direction. In our study, this model has been successfully used to determine crystal field and exchange field parameters for Er2-xCexFe14B compounds based on spin reorientation temperatures obtained experimentally from Mössbauer measurements.

Opis:
The interface between optical spectroscopy, electron magnetic resonance (EMR), and magnetism of transition ions forms the intricate web of interrelated notions. Major notions are the physical Hamiltonians, which include the crystal field (CF) (or equivalently ligand field (LF)) Hamiltonians, and the effective spin Hamiltonians (SH), which include the zero-fi eld splitting (ZFS) Hamiltonians as well as to a certain extent also the notion of magnetic anisotropy (MA). Survey of recent literature has revealed that this interface, denoted CF (LF) ↔ SH (ZFS), has become dangerously entangled over the years. The same notion is referred to by three names that are not synonymous: CF (LF), SH (ZFS), and MA. In view of the strong need for systematization of nomenclature aimed at bringing order to the multitude of different Hamiltonians and the associated quantities, we have embarked on this systematization. In this article, we do an overview of our efforts aimed at providing a deeper understanding of the major intricacies occurring at the CF (LF) ↔ SH (ZFS) interface with the focus on the EMR-related problems for transition ions.

We report on our experimental characterization of index-guiding photonic crystal fibers (PCF) from their far field intensity distribution. The algorithm presented below makes it possible to determine the geometrical parameters of the PCF (core diameter, air hole spacing and air hole diameter) from its far field pattern. We obtained good agreement with the manufacturer's data for all fibers tested.

The main purpose of the paper is to present a method which allows taking into account the anisotropic properties of dynamo steel sheets. An additional aim is to briefly present anisotropic properties of these sheets which are caused by occurrences of some textures. In order to take into account textures occurring in dynamo sheets, a certain sheet sample is divided into elementary segments. Two matrix equations, describing changes of the magnetic field, are transformed to one non-linear algebraic equation in which the field strength components are unknown. In this transformation the flux densities assigned to individual elementary segments are replaced by functions of flux densities of easy magnetization axes of all textures occurring in the given dynamo sheet. The procedure presented in the paper allows determining one non-linear matrix equation of the magnetic field distribution; in this equation all textures occurring in a dynamo sheet are included. Information about textures occurring in typical dynamo sheets may be used in various approaches regarding the inclusion of anisotropic properties of these sheets, but above all, the presented method can be helpful in calculations of the magnetic field distribution in anisotropic dynamo sheets.

Opis:
This paper proposes a method for adjusting light waves propagating in systems composed of photonic fibers, light sources and detection elements. The paper presents the properties of these connections in terms of the loss of signal transmission. Different fiber core areas were analyzed, and measurements of the mode-field diameters (MFDs) of selected fiber structures are presented. The study analyzed two types of LMA (Large Mode Area) fiber structures, and the mode-field diameters of these structures were measured on the basis of the radiation distribution obtained under near-field conditions. The results are compared to the values obtained for a SMF-28 single-mode fiber. The LMA structures analyzed in the paper are characterized by low sensitivity of the MFD parameter to the length of transmitted waves, which creates the possibility of their use as intermediate fibers when connecting optical fibers of different diameters. In the wavelength range from 800 nm to 1600 nm, a 3.5% MFD change was observed for the first investigated LMA structure, and a 1% change was observed for the second. In addition, measurements of the mode-field diameters were also made using the transverse offset method for comparison of the results.

Opis:
The locally resonant (LR) phononic crystal double panel structure made of a two-dimensional periodic array of a two-component cylindrical LR pillar connected between the upper and lower plates is proposed, and the bandgap properties of the structure are investigated theoretically in this paper. The band structures, displacement fields of eigenmodes and transmission power spectrums of the corresponding 8×8 finite structure are calculated by the finite element method. Numerical results and further analysis demonstrate that a band gap with a low starting frequency and a wide band width is opened by the coupling between dominant vibrations of the pillars and plate modes of the upper and lower plates when the vibration source and the receiver are considered on different sides of the structure. By comparing the band structures and displacement fields of the double panel and those of the single plate with the same parameters, many common characteristics are displayed. Then, the influence of geometrical parameters on the band gap are studied and understood with the help of a simple ‘spring-mass’ model.

Opis:
For optimum fusion splicing process of a photonic crystal fiber, the collapsing of the air holes at any photonic crystal fiber is the key point of either increasing or decreasing the total splice loss. In this paper, an experimental study has been carried out to investigate the relation between total splice loss or total fiber attenuation due to splice loss and the length of the collapsed region of the air holes. This is done by splicing ESM-12B photonic crystal fiber between two equal lengths of single mode fibers and measuring the attenuation at different arc times and arc powers. The results showed that the increase in the length of the collapsed air holes region results in higher loss, therefore, higher fiber attenuation.

In the paper we experimentally and theoretically analyze diffraction of light propagating through a microstructured optical fiber on the fiber end face. In the measurements the diffracting light is spatially inhomogeneous and the diffracting object is a solid-state core with a triangular shape. Application of optical system enables detailed experimental investigations of evolution diffraction pattern in the near-field region, in particular, rotation of the observed structure while departing from the fiber end. The experimental results are confirmed with theoretical simulations based on the theory of the Fresnel diffraction.

Opis:
The results of a modelling of big size single crystal ZnGeP2 growth dynamics in the multi-zone thermal installation based on the vertical variant of the Bridgman technique are given. Trustworthiness of the results modeling is achieved by means of creation of the mathematical model taking into account the particularities of the installation as well as the changes in installation work volume during crystallization. Temperature field changes during crystal growth by numerical technique were examined. It is demonstrated that growth container moving has a significant impact on temperature field in work volume and crystallization isotherm local position. Thus, the actual crystal growth rate differs from the nominal velocity of growth container moving. The data received as a result of modelling should be taken into account in new equipment designing, crystallization process control system development and crystal growth experiments planning.

The locally resonant phononic crystal (LRPC) composite double panel structure (DPS) made of a twodimensional periodic array of a two-component cylindrical LR pillar connected between the upper and lower composite plates is proposed. The plates are composed of two kinds of materials and periodically etched holes. In order to reveal the bandgap properties of structure theoretically, the band structures, displacement fields of eigenmodes and transmission power spectrums of corresponding 8 × 8 finite structure are calculated and displayed by using finite element method (FEM). Numerical results and further analysis demonstrate that if the excitation and response points are picked on different sides of the structure, a wide band gap with low starting frequency is opened, which can be treated as the coupling between dominant vibrations of pillars and plate modes. In addition, the influences of filled-in rubber, etched hole and viscidity of soft material on band gap are studied and understood with the help of “base-spring-mass” simplified model.

The plane wave expansion method was implemented in modelling and simulating the band structures of two dimensional photonic crystals with square, triangular and honeycomb lattices with circular, square and hexagonal dielectric rods and air holes. Complete band gaps were obtained for square lattice of square GaAs rods and honeycomb lattice of circular and hexagonal GaAs rods as well as triangular lattice of circular and hexagonal air holes in GaAs whereas square lattice of square or circular air holes in a dielectric medium ε = 18 gave complete band gaps. The variation of these band gaps with dielectric contrast and filling factor gave the largest gaps for all configurations for a filling fraction around 0.1.The gap maps presented indicated that TM gaps are more favoured by dielectric rods while TE gaps are favoured by air holes. The geometrical gap maps operating at telecommunication wavelength λ = 1.55 m showed that a complete band gap can be achieved for triangular lattice with circular and hexagonal air holes in GaAs and for honeycomb lattice of circular GaAs rods.

Elastic deformations of homeotropic nematic liquid crystal layers subjected to a d.c. electric field were studied numerically. The flexoelectric properties of the nematic material and the presence of ionic space charge were taken into account. The influence of anchoring strength W was investigated. The calculations were performed for layers with negative dielectric anisotropy and negative sum of flexoelectric coefficients. Strongly blocking electrodes were assumed. The threshold voltages for deformations were computed for several anchoring strength values and for low, moderate and high ion content. Its value was nearly proportional to W for low anchoring strength and saturated at some high value of W. The director distributions were also determined. This task was complicated by the presence of space charge of ions. Remarkable change of deformation character was noticed when the ion content and anchoring strength were varied.
