    The article presents the concept of empowerment in the context of early childhood education, mentioning its 5 dimensions, i.e. meaning, self-determination, competence, influence and security. Attempts to identify these dimensions are presented in the collected research material in the form of critical events from students’ pedagogical practices. In the light of the results obtained, early school education appears as an environment for blocking students’ empowerment in each of the highlighted aspects. The summary of the article identifies the possibilities of overcoming barriers in respecting the autonomy of a child at school.

    The paper introduces the concept of a critical incident (CI) in the context of foreign language teaching and discusses its importance for teachers` professional development as a factor leading to a teacher´s awareness of his/her classroom. The ability to diagnose critical incidents is seen as an inseparable part of a teacher´s ability to control the teaching context and thus create critical events (CE). This paper also introduces the concept of an appraisal system (Smith and Lazarus 1993 ), understood as one´s evaluation of the relationship between one´s success and failure in respect of past experience and the ability to adapt to an immediate context. In my analysis I will follow Scherer´s (1984) taxonomy of components of appraisal systems such as novelty, the pleasantness of a task and coping potential, among others. This appraisal system is seen as emotionally-driven but it also emphasizes the cognitive dimension and the interaction between affective and cognitive processing. In the empirical part of the paper, the study on CI in teaching EFL is reported on. The main objective of the study was to make in-service teachers of EFL reflect upon their most memorable critical incident (CI) and evaluate it from the affective point of view. The study was also to make the subjects more aware of themselves and their classroom presence. The research instrument used in the project was the Geneva Appraisal Questionnaire -GAQ (Scherer 2001), based on Scherer´s taxonomy.

    Artykuł przedstawia wyniki stanowiące część szerszych badań międzypokoleniowych na temat ważnych, znaczących wydarzeń biograficznych. Narracje osób badanych zostały poddane analizie przez pryzmat wyłonionych w literaturze kryteriów odnoszących się do tzw. krytycznych wydarzeń życiowych (m.in. nagłość zdarzenia i nieprzewidywalności jego skutków, potencjalna dwuwartościowość, rodzaj i charakter zmian życiowych, jakie są efektem zmagania z tym zdarzeniem). Autorki podejmują próbę zrekonstruowania najbardziej typowych krytycznych wydarzeń życiowych i ich znaczenia w biografiach seniorów. Perspektywa temporalna (schyłek życia, czas podsumowań) służy refleksyjnej narracji i czyni ją tym samym wartościową dla egzemplifikacji możliwych (potencjalnych) skutecznych i nieskutecznych strategii życiowych, poczucia jakości życia oraz podstawę budowania mądrości życiowej.
    The article presents the preliminary results of a wider intergenerational study on critical life events. A background analysis of theoretical works on critical life events has led to the selection of criteria (such as the unexpectedness of an event, unpredictability of its effects, its equivocation, type and the nature of life changes it causes) that were used to review the collected narratives of the respondents. The authors attempt to reconstruct critical life events that are the most typical and significant in the biographies of seniors. The seniors’ temporal perspective (decline of life, time of summaries) encourages a more reflective narration that unveils the rich exemplification of potential effective and ineffective life strategies, the subjective quality of life, and the basis of life wisdom.

    This article aims to conceptualize, operationalize, and empirically validate the concept of actual personality development in the aftermath of a Critical Life Event. Two qualitative tools have been elaborated: the Structured Critical Life Events Interview and the Coding System for Personality Development. They were empirically verified in a preliminary longitudinal mixed methods study (N = 40 participants, n = 1440 narratives) with three measurements in one year referring to the Transition Cycle (Hopson & Adams, 1976). For assessing reliability the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach’s α were assessed. The convergent validity of the tools was determined by correlating the results with (1) linguistic structure of participants’ verbalizations and (2) the questionnaires measuring similar behaviours and features. The research showed good psychometric properties of the tools. Moreover, they better identified personality growth and the specific dynamics of personality changes (positive and negative) than the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996).

    The paper is the first part of the probabilistic general model of critical infrastructure accident consequences including the process of initiating events, the process of environment threats and the process of environment degradation models. Basic notions concerned with the events initiating dangerous for the environment after the critical infrastructure accident or its loss of safety critical level are introduced. The methods and procedures of estimating the process of initiating events unknown basic parameters and identifying the distributions of its conditional sojourn times at its states are proposed. Under these all assumptions from the constructed model and after its unknown parameters identification, the main characteristics of the process of the initiating events are predicted. Finally, the proposed model and methods are applied to modelling, identification and prediction of the process of initial events generated by the critical infrastructure defined as a ship operating in the Baltic Sea basin.

    In the paper the probabilistic general model of critical infrastructure accident consequences (GMCIAC) including the process of initiating events, the process of environment threats and the process of environment degradation models is proposed. Next, the methods of its parameters statistical identification are presented. Futher, the marine traffic across the world and sea accidents were observed. Their initiating events and environment threats coming from released chemical substances as well as environment degradations in the neighbourhood region of sea accident were analysed. Then, the process of initiating events, the process of environment threats and the process of environment degradation were analysed and their states are distinguised.

    This paper is both a summarization and extension of [6] and [7], where a stochastic model of interacting operations carried out in a generic Baltic Sea Region port was proposed and analyzed. Each operation involves a number of possible unwanted events (critical incidents) whose instances occur randomly and can cause instances of other events affecting this or other operations. This can lead to a cause-effect chain of events affecting one or multiple operations. The model presented in [6] is somewhat complex, therefore it was downgraded to a simpler, application-oriented version demonstrated in [7], where an algorithm computing the risks of critical incidents is constructed and then applied to a real-life example. The current paper, apart from presenting a method of computing the risks of critical incidents, occurring by themselves or resulting from the cascade effect, also features a method of root-cause analysis of such incidents. First, the formulas for the root-cause probabilities are derived, where such a probability quantifies the likelihood that a critical incident occurring in step h of a cascade was caused by another incident that initiated this cascade. Second, an algorithm computing the root-cause probabilities, based on the derived formulas, is constructed. This algorithm is illustrated by its application to the example given in [7]. The presented results can be used as a tool for fault propagation analysis and fault diagnosis applied not only to a port environment, but to any complex industrial system.
