Opis:
Influence of the size of steel reinforcement of a concrete structure on crack initiation at the interface between the steel fibre and the concrete body of the structure is under consideration. Numerical analysis is provided using a quasistatic delamination model for interface rupture based on an energetic approach using a cohesive zone model for providing the interface stress-strain relation. The obtained results confirm expected dependence of the critical load which causes triggering of the interface crack on a structure dimension parameter.

Opis:
An interface crack between two semi-infinite piezoelectric/piezomagnetic spaces under out-of-plane mechanical load and in-plane electrical and magnetic fields parallel to the crack faces is considered. Some part of the crack faces is assumed to be electrically conductive and having uniform distribution of magnetic potential whilst the remaining part of the crack faces is electrically and magnetically permeable. The mechanical, electrical, and magnetic factors are presented via functions which are analytic in the whole plane except the crack region. Due to these representations the combined Dirichlet-Riemann and Hilbert boundary value problems are formulated and solved in rather simple analytical form for any relation between conductive and permeable zone lengths. Resulting from this solution the analytical expressions for stress, electric and magnetic fields as well as for the crack faces displacement jump are presented. The singularities of the obtained solution at the crack tips and at the separation point of the mention zones are investigated and the formulas for the corresponding intensity factors are presented. The influence of external electric and magnetic fields upon the mechanic, electric and magnetic quantities at the crack region are illustrated in graph and table forms.

A general model of the equations of generalized thermo-microstretch for an infinite space weakened by a finite linear opening mode-I crack is solved. Considered material is the homogeneous isotropic elastic half space. The crack is subjected to a prescribed temperature and stress distribution. The formulation is applied to generalized thermoelasticity theories, using mathematical analysis with the purview of the Lord-Şhulman (involving one relaxation time) and Green-Lindsay (includes two relaxation times) theories with respect to the classical dynamical coupled theory (CD). The harmonic wave method has been used to obtain the exact expression for normal displacement, normal stress force, coupled stresses, microstress and temperature distribution. Variations of the considered fields with the horizontal distance are explained graphically. A comparison is also made between the three theories and for different depths for the case of copper crystal.

We study the contribution of variable surface effects to the antiplane deformation of a linearly elastic material with a mode-III crack. The surface elasticity is incorporated using a modified version of the continuum based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. In our discussion, the surface moduli are not constant but vary along the crack surfaces. Using Green’s function method, the problem is reduced to a single first-order Cauchy singular integro-differential equation, which is solved numerically using Chebyshev polynomials and a collocation method. Our results indicate that the gradient of the surface shear modulus exerts a significant influence on the crack opening displacement and on the singular stress field at the crack tips.

Opis:
This paper deals with the influence of initial crack-tip shape, plastic compressibility and material or strain softening on near-tip stress-strain fields for mode I crack when subjected to fatigue loading with an overload event under plane strain and small scale yielding conditions. A finite strain elastic-viscoplastic constitutive equation with a hardening-softening- -hardening hardness function is taken up for simulation. For comparison, a bilinear hardening hardness function is also considered. It has been observed that the near-tip crack opening stress yy, crack growth stress xx, and hydrostatic stresses are noticeably controlled by the initial crack tip shape, plastic compressibility, material softening as well as the overload event. The distribution pattern of different stresses for a plastically compressible hardening- -softening-hardening solid appears to be very unusual and advantageous as compared to those of traditional materials. Therefore, the present numerical results may guide material scientists/engineers to understand the near-tip stress-strain fields and growth of a crack in a better way for plastically compressible solids, and thus may help to develop new materials with improved properties.

Using conformal mapping techniques, analytic continuation and the theory of Cauchy singular integral equations, we prove that a non-parabolic open inhomogeneity embedded in an elastic matrix subjected to a uniform remote anti-plane stress nevertheless admits an internal uniform stress field despite the presence of a finite mode III crack in its vicinity. Our analysis indicates that: (i) the internal uniform stress field is independent of the specific shape of the inhomogeneity and the presence of the finite crack; (ii) the existence of the finite crack plays a key role in the non-parabolic open shape of the inhomogeneity and in the non-uniform stresses in the surrounding matrix; (iii) the two-term asymptotic expansion at infinity of the stress field in the matrix is independent of the presence of the finite crack. Detailed numerical results are presented to demonstrate the proposed theory.

In this paper a new continuous model for vibration analysis of a beam with an open edge crack is presented. A quasi-linear displacement filed is suggested for the beam and the strain and stress fields are calculated. The equation of motion of the beam is calculated using the Hamilton principle. The calculated equation of motion is solved with a modified weighted residual method and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The results are compared with those obtained by finite element method and an excellent agreement has been observed. The presented model is a simple and accurate method for analysis of the cracked beam behavior near or far from the crack tip.

Opis:
In this paper, a numerical modeling of crack propagation for rubber-like materials is presented. This technique aims at simulating the crack growth under mixed-mode loading based on the strain energy density approach. At each crack increment length, the kinking angle is evaluated as a function of the minimum strain energy density (MSED) around the crack tip, using the Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL). In this work, numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and accuracy of the computational algorithm to predict the crack propagation path. The results obtained show that the plan of crack propagation is perpendicular to the direction of the maximum principal stretch. Moreover, in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), the minimum values of the density are reached at the points corresponding to the crack propagation direction.

The paper contains results of experimental tests on the fatigue crack growth rate of AlCuMg1 aluminium alloy for Mixed Mode I and Mode III in conditions of different stress ratios R. For the tests, plane specimens with an external unilateral sharp notch as the stress concentrator were used. The tests were done for a constant moment amplitude under bending with torsion. The results of experimental tests were described by a nonlinear formula based on the ?J-integral range. The change of the stress ratio R from -1 to 0 caused the fatigue crack growth rate. The proposed formula for description of the fatigue crack growth rate, including the ?J- integral range, satisfactorily described the results obtained experimentally for AlCuMg1 aluminium alloy.

Opis:
A beam structure under natural vibration in presence of crack undergoes a sharp change in its dynamic characteristics. In the present study the changes in two important modal vibration parameters like mode shapes and natural frequencies have been extensively studied for crack diagnosis in presence and absence of crack. Numerical and experimental investigations have been carried out using an aluminium Free-Free beam structure with and without crack. The crack presence is indicative of a decrease in local flexibility at crack location and a variation in mode shapes and natural frequencies are noticed. These variations in modal parameters have been used as the tools for crack diagnosis. In the present paper, efforts are made to analyse the presence of a crack using the application of fuzzy logic methodology. Here relative natural frequencies preferably first three are derived from experimental and theoretical investigations are utilised as input data to the fuzzy controller with Gaussian membership functions to obtain crack position and crack depth as output data. The resulted output data from fuzzy logic and the result from corresponding experimental and numerical analysis have been compared. The deviation of result of fuzzy logic from numerical and experimental results have been found to be within a limit of 3%.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the proposed research is to create a calculation model of surface fatigue crack growth at the axle of railway wheelset working under operational loads. Design/methodology/approach: The energy approach of the fracture mechanics was used to formulate the calculation model of fatigue crack propagation at the wheelset axle surface. The method of least squares was used to determine the investigated material mechanical constants that the kinetic equations of the calculation model contain. The system of differential equations of crack growth kinetics was solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method. Findings: On the basis of the energy approach of the fracture mechanics the calculation model of fatigue macrocrack growth in three-dimensional elastic-plastic body in case of a mixed-mode I+II+III macromechanism of fracture has been built. On the basis of the created calculation model, the kinetics of the growth of fatigue cracks was investigated both in the middle part of the wheelset axle and in the axle journal. Research limitations/implications: The results obtained on laboratory specimens should be tested during a real railway wheelset axle investigation. Practical implications: The created calculation model can be used in practice to formulate method of residual lifetime estimation of railway wheelset axle. Originality/value: It was shown, that surface crack kinetics depends not only on the crack initial area but also significantly depends on the crack edge geometry and comparatively small crack-like defects at the wheelset axle surface can reach critical sizes in comparatively short run. It has been found that mechanical shear stresses caused by the weight of the loaded railway wagon in the cross section of the wheelset axle journal can significantly accelerate the growth of the transverse fatigue crack at the axle surface, reducing the period of crack subcritical growth by about 20%.
