Opis:
The text is the pedagogical commentary to the famous phrase of Shakespeare and an allusion to the well-known short story by Jorge Luis Borges. We are all made from the tissue of time. And unfortunately time of education seems to be out of joint. We have lost control of it. We have lost a deep connection to tradition, the rhythm favourable to maturation, anticipatory panache and shiver. The learning time has been dislocated because education was not able to resist history and a spirit of immediacy. In this situation, educational urgent task is to fight for the quality time. The fourth dimension of time – apart from past, present, and future - is sense. In the recovery of the pedagogic time there are important: a resistance to „pursuit for Godot” and a disposition for slow reading. The learning is forking of the time.

Opis:
The Tachypleus tridentatus (Chelicerata: Xiphosura) is an arthropod that usually displays high site fidelity by restricting its distribution to natal vicinities. Briefly, shore perturbation from boating (Kudat), electric, cyanide and bombing (Kunak) and tourism (Semporna) in Sabah can impair the T. tridentatus growth and produce sexually mature adults with unusual size. The 8-point morphometry of Tachypleus tridentatus from Kudat (Sulu Sea), Kunak and Semporna (Celebes Sea), produces the final output constituting accurate size classification for the species. Meanwhile, T. tridentatus are sexually dimorphic (p = 0.968–0.989), where male T. tridentatus (from Kudat) has prosoma width (27.75 ± 2.68 cm) and weight (1050 ± 610 g) in smaller ranges when compared to the female (33.27 ± 4.68 cm; 3020 ± 1480 g) using the same comparison. In addition, the T. tridentatus populations from Kunak (prosoma width: male = 28.91 ± 1.48 cm, female = 29.44 ± 5.47 cm; weight: male = 800 ± 275 g; female = 2550 ± 155 g) and Semporna (prosoma width: male = 21.73 ± 1.34 cm, female = 24.42 ± 1.36 cm; weight: male = 485 ± 306 g, female = 1320 ± 640 g) differed site-wise. The descriptive statistics (average and standard deviation) relate 7.1–23.0% of T. tridentatus with negative size class. However, the applied statistics using stepwise analysis and regression curve (r2 = 0.566–0.833), relates 30.4% of T. tridentatus with negative size class. Considering weight to produce 100% T. tridentatus with positive size class, it is biased because some crabs are gravid with eggs and if attained unpaired (male and female), they may have recently fed. Therefore, the prosoma (male), interorbit (female) and telson lengths are identified as most appropriate for the size classification of T. tridentatus. Thus, the findings provide a novel baseline for conservation studies that monitor symmetrical and unusual growth in the T. Tridentatus wild stocks.

Strata with cyanobacterial−sponge buildups of Middle to Late Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) age in the southern Polish Uplands document the earliest known members of the Pylochelidae. Two new Late Jurassic species of “symmetrical” hermit crabs, Ammopylocheles robertboreki and Jurapylocheles iwonae, are described. A new term, the massetic region, is introduced to describe the equivalent in paguroids of the hepatic region in brachyuran carapaces, because in the former, this region does not reflect the position of the liver but rather an attachment zone of the mandibular muscles.

Opis:
A new species of diogenid paguroid, Eopaguropsis nidiaquilae, the earliest known member of the family to date, is recorded from sponge−reefal strata of Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) age in the southern Polish Uplands. Morphological features of the carapace suggest that the family Diogenidae diverged from other paguroid lineages such as the Pylochelidae and Parapaguridae, long before the Oxfordian Stage (161.2–155.7 Ma). The typically deep, V−shaped cervical groove of diogenids most likely was the product of fusion of the branchiocardiac and cervical grooves of their predecessors.

Opis:
Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (n-HAp), which has low crystallinity, has attracted great attention due to its similarity to the inorganic part of human bone. Therefore, many studies have focused on creating new formulations combining n-HAp with some biopolymers, such as chitosan, in order to imitate biological bone tissue. The importance of chitosan and its derivatives in biomedical applications has grown significantly in the last three decades due to its biodegradability and renewable source. Besides, chitosan and its derivatives present excellent biocompatibility and biofunctionality, which make them promising materials in bone tissue engineering. In the present study, the chitosan was, first, extracted from the shell of the freshwater crab species Potamon algeriense following demineralization, deproteinization, decolouration (raw chitin) and deacetylation (chitosan) steps. Then, a novel composite based on n-HAp and extracted chitosan (CTS) with varying chitosan contents, from 5% to 20% (w/w), was synthesized and characterized for potential application in tissue regeneration. The obtained composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The precipitated n-HAp/CTS nanocomposites similar to natural bone are promising composites for bone tissue engineering applications.

The synziphosurine horseshoe crab Pasternakevia was until now known only from a single specimen. Herein we describe three new specimens from the outcrop close to the type locality of monotypic P. podolica that show several features that were unknown or only assumed in this genus. These characters include: a smooth surface of the carapace; an opisthosoma composed of ten segments, the first one being a microtergite (strongly reduced first opisthosomal segment usually hidden under the carapace), two or three last segments fused into a metasoma, and the telson. Pasternakevia is included in Bunodidae due to a hypertrophied tergite 2, but it is linked to the Pseudoniscidae by the shape of the opisthosoma.

Marine invertebrates depend upon antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as a major component of innate immunity, as they are rapidly synthesized and diffuse upon pathogen invasion. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of a 11 kDa antimicrobial protein, which we name SSAP (for Scylla serrata antimicrobial protein), from granular hemocytes of the mangrove crab S. serrata. The protein is highly similar to scygonadin, a male-specific AMP isolated from the ejaculatory duct of S. serrata. SSAP was isolated using various chromatographic techniques, viz. ion-exchange, ultra filtration and RP-HPLC, and demonstrated antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Full length mRNA encoding SSAP was amplified using a combination of RT-PCR and RACE. The nucleotide sequence revealed a full-length ORF of 381 bp coding for a preprotein of 126 amino acids comprising a signal peptide of 24 amino acids and a mature protein of 102 amino acids with a predicted mass of 11435 Da and pI of 5.70. Unlike scygonadin, SSAP is expressed in several tissues of both male and female crabs, as evidenced by RT-PCR, Northern and Western blot analyses. The study suggests that SSAP might be an isoform or a variant of scygonadin and might play an important role in regulating the immunity of the crab upon microbial infection.
