Opis:
A study was done on the feeding behaviour, development indices, and biochemical response of 4th instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis in which seven cotton genotypes were used: Giza86, Giza88, Giza92, 10229 × Giza 86, H10, Suvin, and Karshenseki. Castor bean leaves were used as the control. All the tested cotton genotypes decreased the feeding behavior of S. littoralis larvae in terms of consumption percentages, consumption rate (CR), growth rates (GR), efficiency of conversion of ingested and digested food (ECI and ECD), approximate digestibility (AD), and feeding deterrence (FDI) compared to the control. Additionally, all the tested cotton varieties prolonged the time taken for larval and pupal duration and reduced both the pupation percentages and the weight of the resulting pupae, as compared to the control. Giza86 recorded the lowest values of both larval growth index and fitness (7.31 and 1.05, respectively) while the genotype Suvin recorded the lowest standardised growth index (0.020) more than other genotypes and the control that gave 10.16, 1.53, and 0.032, respectively. There was a significant inhibition in the level of both total soluble protein and total lipids, and activities of amylase and the trehalase enzymes in all the tested varieties, compared to that found in the control.

Opis:
In order to study genetic diversity and some physiological features related to chilling stress using molecular markers, an experiment was conducted at University of Mohaghegh Ardabili. Treatments were set in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 3 stress levels (25, 15 and 5°C) between 20 cotton genotypes. The results showed that chilling stress influenced on some physiological features such as the activity of catalase, proline content, soluble carbohydrates and proteins. Cluster analysis carried out using WARD method in physiological features showed that genotypes located in three groups in the acclimation level and after acclimation, respectively. Nazilli, Ciakra, Avangard and B 557 were in the better group in studied levels. Also based on the results Avangard, Chegurava, Tashkand and Shirpan 603 were the most tolerant genotypes. In the ISSR marker analysis using of 12 primers produced 96 polymorphic bands. The mean of PIC, MI and EMR were 0.283, 1.065 and 3 respectively, for all primers. Some of markers had promising results that confirmed ISSR markers as powerful tool in any marker assisted program for plant breeders.

This study was designed to identify the response of oil and protein content to non-heritable variation of seed size in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The experiment was conducted at Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences, Gorgan, Iran in 2005. The results showed that germination and emergence increased linearity with seed size and R2 of these relationships were 92 and 89%, respectively. This means that larger seed had higher potential of germination and emergence. Also, there was a strong linear relationship between seed weight and oil content. Seed weight provided a better indication of oil content (R2=0.78) than protein content (R2=0.43). There are no considerable relationship between seed size and protein content of seed...

Opis:
The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is a polyphagous sap sucking insect with a wide geographical and host range causing severe losses in economically important crops. This study represents the first record of P. solenopsis as a new insect attacking cotton plants (Gossypium barbadense var. Giza 86) in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, Egypt. The insect was noticed on cotton plants for the first time during its growing season of 2014. The mealybug specimens were collected from infested cotton plants and identified as P. solenopsis. In an attempt to control this pest, eight toxic materials viz., imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, flonicamid, emamectin-benzoate, chlorpyrifos, methomyl, deltamethrin and mineral oil (KZ-oil), belonging to different chemical groups, were tested for their influence against P. solenopsis on cotton under field conditions. Methomyl, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and chlorpyrifos showed the highest efficacy against P. solenopsis recording 92.3 to 80.4% reduction of the insect population. Flonicamid, emamectin-benzoate and KZ-oil failed to exhibit sufficient P. solenopsis control.

Seeds of the three cotton genotypes, H-6 and H-4 (Gossypium hirsutum),and V797 (G. herbaceum) for their growth variations in IAA oxidase and peroxidase activities. The three genotypes varied in their final seed weight. The peroxidase analysis was done with four different hydrogen donors. Though the trends in peroxidase activitywere almost similar in the three genotypes, there was variation with different hydrogen donors. These was an inverse correlation between Cytoplasmic peroxidase and Wall bound peroxidase activity and rate of water uptake of the seed. The peroxidase activity showed up increasing levels only after the rate of water uptake decreased. However, IAA oxidase activity did not show any discernible trend with water content. The role of cytoplasmic and wall bound peroxidase in seed development is discussed in detail

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of various textile materials based on polyester and cotton for shoe uppers and lining. For that purpose, the influence of the ratio of a mixture of cotton and polyester fibers on the quality of the fabric was investigated. As a result, fabrics with the same composition but different yarn numbers differed from each other in specified properties. With an increase in the content of polyester, all specified properties increase except for vapor permeability, which makes it possible to correctly select the composition of fabrics for shoes.

Opis:
In this study, five parameters of a mercerising machine, four parameters of untreated yarn and three parameters of the caustic soda bath affecting the tensile strength of mercerised yarn were investigated. Experiments were designed with the aid of the Response Surface Method. Accordingly different types of yarns were mercerised on different machines and with production settings, then relevant trends were studied. Results show that the strength of the mercerised yarn is highly affected by the cylinder normal pressure, warm rinsing temperature and caustic soda bath concentration, while the effect of the cold rinsing temperature is observed only for higher qualities of cotton fibers and yarns. Increasing the cylinder rotation duration results in a reduction in the strength of carded yarns, but has little effect on combed yarns. Results also show that optimum settings are highly affected by the type of cotton fiber, yarn structure and number of plies, but the linear density of single yarn and the mercerising machine type have no significant effect.

Opis:
The length difference and low flexibility of cotton stalk bark fibers make fiber spinning difficult. In this work, cotton stalk bark fibers that were directly from degummed cotton stalk bark were wetted, carded and softened before sliver-marking, and then they were blended with cotton fibers for carding and spinning in various blending ratios. The results showed that a reasonable open roller speed was 6000 rpm for blending ratio 50/50, 7000 rpm for blending ratio 35/65, and 8000 rpm for blending ratio 20/80. The minimum yarn linear density was 60 tex for blending ratio 50/50, 50 tex for blending ratio 35/65, and 40 tex for blending ratio 20/80.
Różnica długości i niska elastyczność włókien z kory szypułkowej bawełny utrudniają przędzenie włókien. W pracy, włókna z kory szypułkowej bawełny, które były bezpośrednio odśluzowane z bawełnianej szypułki, zwilżono i zmiękczono, a póżniej zmieszano z włóknami bawełnianymi następnie zgrzeblono i przędzono w różnych stosunkach mieszania.

The essential oil of Artemisia annua L., a weed collected from northern Iran, was studied for its toxicity and physiological aspects on 4th instar larva of the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera Hübner in controlled conditions (26±1°C, 65±10% RH and 16 L : : 8 D h). The artificial diet was used as a medium for investigating the toxicity and the effect of LC10, LC30, LC50, and LC90 on the feeding efficiency of 4th instar larva. The essential oil in doses of LC10, LC30, LC50, and LC90 were estimated to be 2.01%, 3.86%, 6.07%, and 18.34%, respectively. The activity of α-amylase, protease, lipase, general esterases, and glutathione S-transferase and protein, triglyceride, glucose for treated larva were measured. The results showed that all of these parameters were decreased compared with the control. Hence, A. annua essential oil is suggested as a botanical for controlling this important pest of field crops.

The interferometer-polarimeter in the stellarator W7-X will operate in the far infrared band in the double passage regime: the electromagnetic beam will be reflected back from a corner cube retroreflector and thus pass through the magnetized plasma twice. Evolution of the polarization state of the beam along the polarimeter sightline in the standard magnetic field configuration of W7-X is analyzed on the basis of differential equations, for traditional polarization parameters – azimuthal angle [psi] and ellipticity angle [chi]. The influence of the Faraday and the Cotton-Mouton phenomena on polarization parameters [psi] and [chi] are analyzed. Calculations are performed for different plasma densities. Finally the potential sources of inaccuracy are considered, such as the shift in the probing beam position.

Three cotton genotypes (Gossypium hirsutum L. H-4, H-6, G. herbaceum V797) varying in their final seed weight were analyzed for the growth and glycosidases activity. Five glycosidases, viz., a-b-galactosidases, a-b-glucosidases and a-mannosidases were estimated in cytoplasmic and wall-bound fractions. Data on dry weight and water content were fitted to polynomial equations and third degree polynomial equation was best-fit. Rate of dry matter accumulation showed closed relationship with water content in all three genotypes. The values for correlation coefficient {r= 0.956(H-4), r= 0.892(H-6) and r= 0.983 (V797)}, were statistically significant. No correlation between ionically wall-bound glycosidases and sink development was observed. In cytoplasmic fraction, the activities were higher during latter phase of dry matter accumulation. Probable role of these enzymes in mobilization of storage products during seed development is discussed.

Early sowing in cotton is important for obtaining a high and qualiy yield. Since cotton prefers high temperatures to have a good stand establisment, this work is important to determine better performing genotypes or to promote germination and emergence at low temperatures (<20°C). This research aimed to increase seed germination rate and seed vigour under cold stress conditions. Two cotton genotypes belonging to G. hirsutum L. species (Aydin-110 and Paymaster-2379) were primed with PEG-6000 (200, 300, 400 giL), KN03 (2, 3, 4%), KH2P04 (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 M), NaCl (2, 3, 4%) or Mannitol (2, 4, 6%) to determine the best priming medium and its best amount. After priming, seeds were germinated in germination cabin at cold (18°C) and warm (30° C) temperatures and some characteristics (germination rates, radicle length, hypocotyl length and seedling length) were analyzed. Priming with KN03 (4% or 2%) was found to result in the highest germination rates in both cotton genotypes. The seeds of the genotypes were also primed with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) (1, 10, 25 mg/L), gibberellic acid (GA3) (100, 250, 500 µM), methyljasmonate (MeJA) (1, 3, 5 µM),acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) (1, 10, 100 µM) or kinetin (1, 5, 10 mg/L) added to KN03 (4%) medium to choose the most effective plant growth regulator (PGR) application and its dose. PGRs were observed to have reverse effects on germination rate. Finally, emergence test was conducted with KN03 (4%) and KN03 (2%) using metabolic chill test, and some traits (radicle length, radicle weight, hypocotyllength, hypocotyl weight, seedling length, seedling fresh weight and seedling dry weight) were examined. Our results suggested that priming with KN03 (2%) might be an effecient way to have vigourous cotton plants under the cold stress.

A gradient method is proposed for inversion of polarimetric data for tokamak plasma. It is assumed that the electron density and the normalized magnetic profile along the ray are known from experiments (scattering and magnetic measurements) in the spirit of the EFIT approach. Under these assumptions the maximum value of the electron density and maximum value of the magnetic field may be estimated by the gradient method. It is shown that with this method it is possible to achieve accuracy of about 0.1% already after 3-4 iterations.
