In this study, a back propagation feed forward neural network, with two hidden layers (10:10:10:4), was applied to predict Cu grade and recovery in industrial flotation plant based on pH, chemical reagents dosage, size percentage of feed passing 75 μm, moisture content in feed, solid ratio, and grade of copper, molybdenum, and iron in feed. Modeling is performed basing on 92 data sets under different operating conditions. A back propagation training was carried out with initial weights randomly mode that may lead to trapping artificial neural network (ANN) into the local minima and converging slowly. So, the genetic algorithm (GA) is combined with ANN for improving the performance of the ANN by optimizing the initial weights of ANN. The results reveal that the GA-ANN model outperforms ANN model for predicting of the metallurgical performance. The hybrid GA-ANN based prediction method, as used in this paper, can be further employed as a reliable and accurate method, in the metallurgical performance prediction.

Opis:
In this research, the effect of different sources of process water on the flotation efficiency of copper sulfide ore prepared from the Sarcheshmeh copper mine was investigated. For this purpose, samples of fresh water to the plant, overflows of copper-molybdenum concentrate thickener, copper concentrate thickener, and recycled water pool as well as a mixture of fresh water and recycled water were prepared and characterized. Flotation tests were performed under the same conditions as the plant’s rougher circuit and were kept constant during all experiments. Grade and recovery of copper, iron, molybdenum, and silica were selected as the metallurgical response of flotation tests. The results were subjected to statistical analysis to assess the relative significance of which water source affects the flotation performance as evaluated from the experimental results. The results showed that the copper concentrate thickener overflow had the greatest effect on the flotation efficiency, so the grade and recovery decreased by about 10% and 75% for copper, and 10% and 6% for iron in the concentrate, respectively, while the grade and recovery increased up to 0.1% and 12% for silica, and 3% and 25% for molybdenum, respectively. The reason for this effect was attributed to the high content of suspended solid particles, and Cu2+, Mo2+, and Fe2+ cations in this water source that increased the coating effect over gangue minerals and entrainment rate. The improvement of molybdenum flotation was also ascribed to the possible presence of residual diesel oil from the flotation process in the plant. Due to the relatively equal amount in all sources of process water, the effect of anions and ions of dissolved salts was difficult.

Copper smelter slag and copper smelter slag flotation tailings were leached using sulphuric acid solutions, without or with the addition of either ferric sulphate or hydrogen peroxide. Copper extraction from the slag was typically found to be twice as high as that from the slag flotation tailings. Hydrogen peroxide was determined to be the best lixiviant. Thus, copper and iron extractions were 63.4% and 48.6%, respectively, when leaching the slag with 3 M H2O2, after 120 minutes of reaction at room temperature. Copper dissolution was generally found to be the dominant process within the first 60 minutes of reaction, whereas iron dissolution dominated afterwards.

Hexylamine, chloro-derivative of propylamine, and ammonium chloride were used for flotation of Permian carbonaceous copper bearing shale from the Legnica-Glogow Copper Basin region in SW Poland. It was confirmed that naturally hydrophobic shale, known as Kupferschiefer, can be made floatable by application of short chain amines as frothers. It was also established that the short chain amine chloro-derivatives as well as salmiac, the first member of the amine family, can be used as a frother for flotation of the investigated shale sample. It results from the paper that the investigated amine frothers work similarly if the comparison of the flotation results is made using their concentration expressed in relative form taking into account the critical coalescence concentration of the frother.

The paper presents a scheme of conducting ANOVA, which can be a statistical method using for the analysis of various complex phenomena in different fields of science. It is mainly focused on presentation of different areas of application at statistical model, especially in mineral engineering. Selected experiments in which ANOVA was used successfully to study the process of flotation and proper-ties of three types of coal are presented in this study. Mineral resources are characterized by different properties and the flotation process depends on many factors which must be carefully controlled to obtain an expected separation efficiency of the process under industrial conditions. These facts determine the complexity of mineral processing structure. This choice of ANOVA was dictated by the adjustment of methodology to the nature of the analyzed phenomena. Based on this analysis it can be stated that the analysis of variance is appropriate to consider problems associated with the mineral engineering. The examples described in the paper confirmed a high potential which ANOVA carries. However, it should be noted that the one-dimensional analysis of variance has some limitations.

In this study, iron selectivity behaviour of copper smelter slag (CSS) flotation tailings (38.08% Fe, 0.35% Cu, 4.48% Zn, 0.16% Co, 0.37% S) having fayalite and magnetite as major minerals was investigated with hematitization baking and base metals leaching methods using mineralogical and chemical analyses. For selectivity of iron, it was baked at temperatures of 650-690-700-710-730°C. The aim of the baking is to transform the almost all of the iron in the fayalite into the oxidized (non-soluble) form and the base metals into the sulphated (soluble) form. The temperature that had the lowest hematitization rate of iron was found to be 650°C, and the highest temperature was found to be 730°C. To examine the dissolution behaviour of baked CSS flotation tailing was leached at 50°C at a 1/10 (w/v) for 1 hour by using water. After baking at 690°C calcine and leaching residue, S values were determinated to be approximately 17% and 9%, respectively. Baking made at 700⁰C, amount of sulfate also decreased to 10% and S content was measured as 4% of its leaching residue. As a result of this study, 690⁰C/700⁰C was determined as optimum conditions of hematitization baking and base metals were extracted selectively when the iron was remained at leaching residue in Fe2O3 phase. It was determined that, hematitization is high and the sulphates of the base metals are preserved at 700⁰C temperature. The fayalite phase completely decomposed into Si-O/Fe-O/Zn-S-O/Co-S-O compounds at 700⁰C baking which was the highest iron selective and base metals dissolute temperature.

W pracy przedstawiono skład mineralny osadów po flotacji rud miedzi, które mogą znaleźć zastosowanie jako domieszki kontrolujące kwasowość gleb oraz źródło mikroelementów dla roślin. Wśród minerałów kruszcowych miedzi stwierdzono siarczki zawierające miedź i ołów: kowelin, chalkozyn, chalkopiryt, galenę; węglany miedzi i ołowiu: malachit i cerusyt oraz siarczki i tlenki żelaza: piryt, markasyt, hematyt i getyt. Frakcje ziarnowe powyżej 0,016 mm cechują się występowaniem miedzi rodzimej, przeobrażonej w kupryt, podczas gdy drobne frakcje ziarnowe są zdominowane udziałem malachitu. Doświadczenie z glebą kwaśną oraz rośliną testową (żyto zwyczajne – Secale cereale) wykazało, że osady poflotacyjne mogą być stosowane do regulowania odczynu gleby. Około 85% metali pobranych przez rośliny znajdowało się w ich korzeniach. Osady poflotacyjne, które zastosowane były jako gleby, powinny być przeznaczone raczej na uprawę roślin przemysłowych niż konsumpcyjnych.
The paper describes a mineral and mineralogical composition of post-flotation tailings of copper ores and their possible use for agricultural purposes. The tailings can find application as additives controlling the acidity of agricultural soils and as a source of microelements for plants. The following copper and lead minerals are dominant: covellite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite and galena; copper and lead carbonates are represented by malachite and cerusite. Iron sulphides and oxides, i.e.: pyrite, marcasite, hematite and goethite have also been identified. In the grain fraction >0.016 mm, native copper was find, whereas fine fractions were dominated by the presence of malachite. An experiment with acid soil and test plant (rye – Secale cereale) has revealed that the tailings may be applied for regulating soil pH. Metal distribution in the test plant showed that ca 85% of metals were find in the root biomass. Tailings that are designated as soil should be used rather for crops of industrial purposes than for consumption.

One of the main challenges in the copper oxide processing industry is implementation of a flotation method to reduce operating costs. Sulphidising flotation is the most common used technique in which a sulphidisation agent is used to sulphidise the surface of the oxide minerals. In this research, the mentioned technique was used sequentially for the concentration of silicate-carbonate ore containing 3.1% Cu (malachite). The presence of 39% Cu in -38 μm size fraction (fine particles) of feed led to poor grades and recoveries in the initial tests. The addition of sodium sulfide and subsequent flotation at three sequential stages was identified as a successful operational initiative to solve this problem in the following tests. The dosages of 1500, 1567 and 100 g/Mg of sodium silicate, sodium sulfide and potassium amyl xanthate, respectively, the conditioning time of 5 min for sulphidisation and pH=9.72 were chosen as optimum operational conditions using central composite design (CCD) method of experiments design. The rougher concentrate with 9.28% grade and 81.15% recovery was obtained under these conditions. The grade of obtained concentrate was reached to 24% in the cleaner step. The total recovery of both steps was over 74%.

The Sarcheshmeh copper mine is a significant copper and molybdenum producer. Sampling of the Sarcheshmeh flotation circuit (in a six-month period) showed that a large share of waste of molybdenite took place in rougher cells. Since the rougher cells tailing is transferred to tailing thickener, the main focus of this paper was on this section. In the current study, the factors which influence the recovery of molybdenite and copper were investigated. Molybdenite recovery in the bulk flotation circuit was consistently lower than that of the copper sulphides as well as being far more variable. This paper describes the methodically use of size by size recovery data, quantitative mineralogy, and liberation degree analysis to identify the factors contributing to molybdenite recovery relative to copper in industrial rougher circuit. The results showed that the size by size recovery for both metals in the ultrafine and coarse fractions recovery was reduced. On the other hand, the highest recovery occurred in the intermediate sizes from 27 μm to 55 μm. Molybdenum recovery in the fine and ultrafine and coarse fractions drops off to a greater extent than the recovery of copper. The investigations of degree liberation showed that the recovery of copper sulphides is more dependent on the liberation state of valuable minerals while for molybdenite some other factor splay a significant role.

This paper describes possibilities of organic carbon matter separation during a pre-flotation stage in KGHM Polska Miedz, Division of Concentrators. The paper contains a survey of organic carbon removal technologies in worldwide plants as well as KGHM achievements in this field. Laboratory flota-tion testing results have also been described. Next, an industrial scale trial at Polkowice Concentrator has been conducted to confirm the previous laboratory results. The results have been discussed. They indicate a positive role of the pre-flotation stage on organic carbon removal using only frother as the flotation reagent.

Given the significant consumption and future demand for water resources, this paper intends to find the conditions for using a flotation process with different water quality. One of the alternatives is using water under secondary treatment with industrial water mixtures to partly recycle domestic wastewater and maximize metallurgical benefits. Results show that using wastewater (only with secondary treatment) in flotation is detrimental to copper recovery. However, molybdenum recovery is significantly improved. For mixtures with 50 [%] wastewater, 50 [ppm] frother, 20 [ppm] collector, and pH 10, copper recovery decrease amounts to 0.4 [%], while molybdenum shows a 2.4 [%] recovery increase. In addition, copper concentrate grade decreases by 1.4 [%], while molybdenum grade remains. Therefore, using wastewater is viable, particularly in the case of molybdenum. So, this study proposes using of water mixtures in the copper depression stage to improve molybdenum recovery.

This papers shows that frothers such as aliphatic alcohols (CnH2n+1OH), poly(propylene glycols) (HO(C3H6O)mH), poly(propylene glycol) alkyl ethers (CnH2n+1O(C3H6O)mH) and poly(ethylene glycol) alkyl ethers (CnH2n+1O(C2H4O)mH), can be used for collectorless flotation of a sample of carbonaceous copper shale manually separated from the Kupferschiefer stratiform copper ore. It was shown that flotation is influenced by the type and dose of frothers. The best flotation results were obtained with tri(propylene glycol) butyl ether C4P3, tri(propylene glycol) propyl ether C3P3 and tri(propylene glycol) P3. For these frothers, the yield vs. frother dose relationship was in the form of convex curves indicating that carbonaceous copper shale can float at relatively low dosages of the frother. It means that these frothers can be used for pre-flotation of carbonaceous matter from the investigated copper ore. Other frothers formed concave yield–frother dose relationships and were less effective.

Copper-ion activation plays a highly important role in cervantite (Sb2O4) flotation. Without metal-ion activation, cervantite cannot be floated by sodium oleate. In this study, flotation tests were conducted to study the effect of Cu2+ on the flotation behaviours of cervantite and quartz (SiO2) as the main gangue mineral. Metal-ion adsorption capacities, zeta potentials, solution chemistry and X-ray photoelectron spectra were analyzed to study the adsorption behavior and mechanism of copper ions and sodium oleate interaction with the minerals surfaces. The results demonstrate that under weakly acidic conditions, cervantite can be flotated and separated from quartz by the addition of copper ions. The reason is that copper ions can be selectively adsorbed on the cervantite surface under weakly acidic conditions, thereby promoting the adsorption of sodium oleate onto the cervantite surface by chemical adsorption. Conversely, copper ions are weakly adsorbed on quartz surfaces below pH 6.1, and sodium oleate cannot be adsorbed on quartz surfaces by chemical adsorption. The hydroxy copper species are integral to the selective activation of cervantite over quartz.

The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

Opis:
Accuracy of determination of different separation parameters and selectivity indicators depends on the error of chemical analysis of feed and separation products as well as experimental and approximation errors. In this paper different selectivity parameters were considered which formulae was based on the content of useful component in the feed, concentrate and tailing. It was shown that the impact of chemical analysis on the selectivity parameters was small and the error determined by means of partial derivative approach for a copper ore upgraded by flotation was negligible. Also experimental errors were found to be insignificant. The largest errors occurred for approximation of the upgrading data with inadequately selected selectivity indicators.
