Opis:
Investigation of selective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from acidic nitrate aqueous solutions using transport across polymer inclusion membranes PIMs was performed. The sulphur analogus of phosphinic acids, i.e. bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (1) and tert-butyl(phenyl)- phosphinothioic acid (2) as well as their mixture were incorporated into polymer inclusion membranes composed of cellulose triacetate as a support and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether as a plasticizer. In the experi-ments the transport of Cu(II) across PIM with 1 was rapid and complete, however the lead(II) removal increased with increased membrane saturation. Selective transport of Cu(II) over Pb(II) through PIMs with binary carrier system (1 + 2) was observed; the selectivity order was: Cu(II) >> Pb(II). At tempera-ture of 50C the selectivity coefficient Cu(II)/Pb(II) for membrane with binary carriers was the highest and was equal to 758.

Opis:
Adsorption behaviour of copper (II) oxide particles (CuO-Ps) for the removal of Alkali Blue (AB) was studied. Different adsorption variables such as contact time, initial concentration and pH for the adsorption process were investigated by batch adsorption studies. FTIR was carried out to determine the functional groups present at the surface of the particle with functional groups such as –OH, C=C, C-H, C≡C detected. The percentage removal and optimum contact time for the removal of AB was 84.8% at 10 min. The experimental isotherms data were analyzed using Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms and it was observed that AB fits closely to Langmuir with R2 value of 0.884. Kinetics studies shows that the adsorption process fits better to pseudo-second order with the experimental values of qe 4.242 been closer to the calculated values of the qe 4.108. Effect of pH shows that it adsorb better at the initial pH of 5.30. Lower value of mean square energy of 0.707 kJ/mol indicates that the adsorption process is physical. The results indicated that copper (II) oxide particle can be used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of AB from aqueous solutions.

We have reported herein the synthesis of a novel quinone derivative ligand containing the Schiff base and its Cu(II) complex starting from 1,4-naphthoquinone. Synthesized compounds were characterized using the Fourier transform infrared, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, molar conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The free ligand was also characterized by ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR spectra. Elemental analyses, stoichiometric and spectroscopic data indicated that the metal:ligand ratio is 1:2 and octahedral structure is proposed for the metal complex of the Schiff base ligand. Computational quantum calculations were also performed using DFT/B3LYP level of theory with 6-311++G(d,p) basis set for the synthesized ligand. It was found that the experimental and theoretical spectroscopic data were consistent.

Two novel Schiff base ligands, 2,2'-((pentane-2,4-diylidene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(4-chlorophenol) and 2,2'-((pentane-2,4-diylidene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(4-methylphenol) were prepared by condensation reaction of acetylacetone with 2-amino-4-chlorophenol and 2-amino-4-methylphenol, respectively. Mononuclear Cu(II) complex of each ligand was also synthesized. These compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, the Fourier transform infrared spectra, UV-Vis, molar conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ligands have been further characterized by ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR. The results suggest that the metal complexes of the ligands have a metal:ligand ratio of 1:1 and the Cu(II) ions are coordinated by the phenolic oxygen atoms and imine nitrogen atoms of the ligands. Moreover, the quantum chemical calculations of the compounds have been performed using the density functional theory. It has been found that the calculated spectroscopic values are in a good agreement with experimental data.

An experimental investigation concerns zinc(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and cadmium(II) ions separation from aqueous chloride solutions by solvent extraction and transport through polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) processes. The selective transport of metal ions from the aqueous chloride source phase through PIM containing cellulose triacetate (support), o-nitrophenyl pentyl ether (plasticizer) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (ion carrier) is shown. Zn(II) can be effectively removed from dilute aqueous chloride solutions by its transport through PIMs with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid as the ionic carriers into 1.0 M HCl as the receiving phase. The transport selectivity of Zn(II) over Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) decreases while the pH of the solution increases in the source phase. Also, by solvent extraction, Zn(II) can be selectively removed from dilute aqueous chloride solutions.

The encapsulated and non-encapsulated copper(II) complexes were screened as catalysts for styrene oxidation by using TBHP as the oxygen source in acetonitrile solvent. Under the optimized conditions, the catalysts exhibited moderate activity with higher selectivity to benzaldehyde. Both heterogeneous catalysts were found to be reusable after the catalytic cycle, but with some loss of activity.

Testowane katalizatory wykazują średnią aktywność katalityczną z tendencją wytwarzania aldehy du benzoesowego. Oba heterogenizowane katalizatory mogą być wykorzystywane ponownie bez utraty aktywności katalitycznych.

Opis:
The extraction studies for copper(II) from chloride solutions by mono- and dialkyl derivatives of benzamide and pyridine-3-carboxamide show that the coordination of copper by amide groups is very weak, weaker than by chloride ions. N,N-dialkyl derivative of benzamide does not extract copper from chloride media but N-alkylbenzamide eliminates a small amount of copper (a great deal smaller than pyridine-3-carboxamide derivatives) only from diluted chloride aqueous solutions ([Cl-] < 0.1 M). Infrared studies of copper complexes with mono- and dialkylpyridine-3-carboxamides show that coordination of the ligand molecules to copper(II) ions takes place mainly by the pyridine nitrogen. More stable monoalkylpyridinecarboxamides complexes with CuCl2 are formed probably by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between monomeric molecules of CuCl2L2 complex (L – the amide). However, weak coordination of copper(II) by the amide group may take place.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil with Methylobacterium extorquens as an alternative to high cost commercial adsorbent materials for the removal of copper from aqueous solution. The copper concentrations in the samples of the polluted river water and CuCl2 solutions treated by the natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil (ECS) have been determined by spectrophotometric method. Firstly, the surface of ECS was modified with M. extorquens and surface functionality was increased. Then, the adsorption of Cu (II) from solution phases was studied with respect to varying metal concentration, pH, and temperature and agitation time. The maximum adsorption of Cu (II) for natural and bacteria-modified Erzurum clayey soil was observed at pH: 5.0. At different copper concentrations, copper adsorption analysis was performed on 1 g using clay soil or modified clay soil. Maximum adsorption of Cu (II) was obtained as 45.7 and 48.1 mg g-1 at initial concentration (50 mg/50 mL) and optimal conditions by natural and bacteria-modified clay soil, respectively. The copper concentration was decreased in the substantial amount of the leachates solutions of natural and bacteria-modified clay soil. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to describe the adsorption behavior of Cu (II) ions. The results showed that modified clay soil had a high level of adsorption capacity for copper ion. The various thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were analyzed to observe the nature of adsorption. The structural properties of the natural and bacteria-modified-ECS have been characterized by SEM, FTIR and XRD techniques. Consequently, it was concluded that the bacteria-modified clay soil could be successfully used for the removal of the copper ions from the aqueous solutions.

Copper ions removal by different sorbents from model aqueous solutions was investigated. The decrease of copper ions after addition of biosorbents prepared from mosses Sphagnum sp., Polytrichum commune and a green alga Parachlorella kessleri was compared to copper removal by commercial cationic exchanger Amberlite IR 120. The maximum sorption capacity obtained was 7.4 mg.g-1 (96.1%) and 71 mg.g-1 (95.3%) for ion-exchanger at a solution with concentration of copper ions 16 mg.l-1 and 160 mg.l-1, respectively. A significant copper (II) uptake was achieved within 10 min after addition of biomass Parachlorella kessleri and Shpagnum sp. Their maximal uptake efficiency 92.8% and 85.4%, respectively is comparable to efficiency of ion-exchanger at low copper (II) concentration in solutions. However, at higher copper concentration ion-exchanger was more efficient in copper removal. The advantage of biomass is high biosorption capacity, high efficiency achieved very quickly and cost-effectiveness especially for solutions with low metal concentration (under 100 mg.l-1). These parameters determine biomass as economical alternatives for metal removal from solution during final, polishing step or drinking water preparation.

The biological relevance of proteins and peptides for Cu(II) biology, including the extracellular transport of this element, is commonly estimated by studying stabilities and structures of their complexes. However, our experimental studies on the kinetics of formation of Cu(II) complexes of ATCUN/NTS and Xaa-His-R peptides, considered to be key actors in extracellular copper biology, revealed novel long-lived reaction intermediates. These intermediates, rather than the final reaction products fulfil the chemical criteria for actual biocomplexes derived from biological studies. Our research clearly demonstrated that understanding of the kinetic aspect of interactions is indispensable for realistic modeling of biological interactions of metal ions.

Since late 1930s copper has been recognized as an essential trace metal in living organisms. Copper(II) cation plays the role as a coordination center not only in the single-nuclear complexes, but also in the multinuclear coordination compounds with a particular emphasis on the polymers as ligands. The selected complex compounds of copper(II) with ligands which are organic and inorganic species have been characterized taking into account their physico-chemical properties. In addition, the complex compounds containing ligands such as Schiff ’s bases, hydrocarbons, organic bases, and also polycarboxylic anions: oxydiacetate, thiodiacetate, iminodiacetate and dipicolinate have been described considering their role in the biological systems. Nowadays tested coordination compounds of copper(II) have interesting antibacterial activities against bacteria strains that are antagonistic to the human. The antibacterial activity of copper(II) complex is stronger than some of the known antibacterial substances e.g. ciprofloxacin. In addition, copper(II) complex compounds exhibit a 64-fold greater antimicrobial properties than copper(II) chloride. Moreover, these compounds have antifungal and antioxidant properties. The activities of antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant complex compounds of copper( II) have been compared to the reactivities of these compounds with complexes used as reference substances, e.g. L-ascorbic acid, in the assay using nitrotetrazolium blue.

The cooperation of scientists specializing in different fields has given rise to the integration of previously distinct thematic areas and creation of new multidimensional disciplines as a result. Biochemistry, which has derived from the borderline of chemistry and biology, can be set as a good example. In this short review an insight into electrochemical studies, which are currently carried out in the Department of Microbioanalytics at the Faculty of Chemistry (Warsaw University of Technology), was presented. Three independent scientific pathways introducing electrochemical methods for biochemical and bioanalytical purposes can be distinguished among the ongoing researches. The first one embraces the design of the so-called electronic tongue – a system used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of liquid samples of complex composition. In this work, potentiometric sensor arrays were applied to develop an electronic tongue system enabling the evaluation of the effectiveness of bitter taste masking of pharmaceuticals. The second scientific pathway involves voltammetric studies of the interactions of biologically active peptides with copper(II) ions. The interest was drawn to clarify and describe the role of β-amyloid and NSFRY copper(II) complexes, relevant to Alzheimer’s disease occurrence and cardiovascular system disorder respectively. Finally, boronic acids and their derivatives, exhibiting the affinity for molecules possessing 1,2 or 1,3-diol group in their structure, were used as selective molecular receptors in the third research project. The studies include the selection of the optimal method and conditions of the immobilization process, providing the most favorable receptor layer structure, and the determination of the performances of constructed electrochemical sensor towards particular bioanalytes.

Opis:
The possibility of Pd(II) ions separation from mixtures of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) ions by solvent extraction was studied, using 1-hexyl-2methylimidazole in chloroform as the extractant. The initial concentration of each ion was 10 mM. The tests were carried out at a temperature of 25°C, at a constant strength of the aqueous solution of I = 0.5, as maintained by the KCl solution. It was demonstrated that differences in the stability and structure of their coordination sphere as well as solubility of complexes with the extractant could be used for separating the Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) ions by solvent extraction. Pd(II), which forms flat-square complexes in the solutions, passes easily into the organic phase and is easier separated from the mixture of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) ions, which form octahedral or tetrahedral complexes. Extraction percentages were calculated. For the respective metals, their values increase for increasing concentrations of the extractant in the aqueous phase. The extraction percentage decreases in the following order: Pd(II) > Cu(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II). In the case of the quaternary mixture, the highest extraction percentage for Pd(II) (70%) was obtained at a pH=7.33. Separation coefficients were also calculated. The highest separation coefficients were obtained for the system: Pd(II)/Ni(II), Pd(II)/Co(II); at a pH of 5.4 for an aqueous solution, their values are 13.3 and 7.7, respectively.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium located in an oral cavity. This bacterium can migrate with blood to the different part of the human body e.g colon. The studies suggest participation of Fn in a colorectal cancer promotion, but a particular mechanism of this disease is still unclear. Colorectal cancer leads to million of new death cases each year. It is third in the worldwide in terms of mortality. The predictions for the coming years are not optimistic. The statistics encourage researchers to know the details of the mechanism of colorectal cancer. It is suggest, that outer membrane proteins of Fn are responsible for development of this disease. Transition metal ions such as Cu(I), Cu(II), Fe(II) can coordinate to proteins and generate free radicals by Fenton reaction. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) destroy important biological macromolecules such as DNA, proteins or lipids and cause different diseases. The paper presents characteristics of Fn and its outer membrane proteins, description of copper(II) complexes and their ability to ROS generation.

W tej publikacji badano zdolności kompleksowania wybranych składników napojów energetyzujących, tauryny i L-karnityny z jonami metali bioaktywnych, miedzi(II) i oksowanadu(IV). Wprowadzenie słabej zasady (amoniaku) i słabego kwasu (kwasu octowego), zmieniających pH roztworów badanych, miało zasadniczy wpływ na stany równowagowe w roztworach kompleksów z tauryną i L-karnityną.
Energy drinks sustain considerable level of popularity in Poland, especially among students doing intense mental work or intensively training sportsmen. These products can have both positive and negative influence, hence the need to conduct research on their optimal composition and effects on the body. In this paper the complexation abilities of selected components of energy drinks, taurine and L-carnitine with bioactive metal ions, copper(II) and oxovanadium(IV) have been tested. Spectrophotometric measurements were made in aqueous solutions containing varying amounts of metals and taurine or L-carnitine, without any buffer solutions, and without stabilization of ionic strength in the visible range of electromagnetic radiation as well as the solutions pH-metric measurements. The ability to create persistent coordination bonds of L-carnitine with Cu2+ and VO2+ has been shown as well as a very weak interactions with taurine. Addition of components altering pH of the solutions had a major effect on the equilibrium states in the solution of ammonia and of acetic acid complexes with taurine and L-carnitine.

Opis:
Water quality and waste management are two chief problems that the modern world is struggling with. Intensified development of the industry not only leads to the production of large amounts of solid waste that must be stored in landfills but can also result in contaminant emissions into the environment. Enormous quantities of ash produced from coal combustion have been a long-term problem of the industry. Literature studies show that fly ash can be used as a material to produce cheap and efficient zeolite-type adsorbents due to abundance of alumina-silicates in their composition. Fly ashes which were processed into zeolites as a result of alkaline hydrothermal treatment were obtained from two power plants in Poland (in Turów and Zgierz). The obtained zeolite materials and raw fly ash samples were characterised in terms of specific surface area, particle size distribution and density. The structure was also investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the mid- infrared wavenumber range. Two raw fly ashes and two zeolite materials were examined for their ability to remove Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the amount of adsorbed copper ions by alkaline-modified fly ash was higher than for unmodified fly ash. The ion removal efficiency is high and exceeds 95%.

A selective removal of transition metal cations, i.e. Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II), with ionizable dibenzo-16-crown-5 and dibenzo-19-crown-6 lariat ethers as ionic carriers in transport across polymer inclusion membrane has been presented. The competitive transport from aqueous nitrate solutions containing metal ions at concentrations of 0.0010 M at pH 4.0 and 7.0 through the cellulose triacetate membrane with 0.5 M lariat ether 1 and 2 (based on a plasticizer) as the ion carrier and o-nitrophenyl pentyl ether (ONPPE) as the plasticizer into 0.5 M hydrochloric solution was performed. For pH = 4.0 and 7.0 of source aqueous phases the selectivity orders were as follows: Cu(II) > Co(II) > Zn(II) > Ni(II), and Cu(II) > Zn(II), Ni(II), Co(II), respectively. The semi-empirical equation was used for calculations of enthalpy formation for complexes of lariat ethers studied with transition metal cations. The two possibilities of metal cation-lariat ether coordination were assumed, i.e. via the crown ether cavity or ionizable carboxylic group. We found that for the both lariat ethers studied at pH 4.0 of source phase the transport rate linearly decreases with the enthalpy of formation increase. This correlation confirms that the observed behavior is connected with the stability of complexes formed by interaction of the lariat ether ring and the transition metal cations studied.

Opis:
Zbadano adsorpcję fenolu i jonów miedzi(II) z modelowych roztworów wodnych na sferycznym węglu aktywnym utlenianym nadtlenodisiarczanem(VI) diamonu w różnych warunkach.
Adsorption of phenol and copper(II) ions from model aqueous solutions on spherical activated carbon oxidized with ammonium persulfate under various conditions was investigated. Elemental analysis and adsorption isotherms of water and benzene vapors were employed to assess the extent of modifications of the activated carbon surface. It was demonstrated that adsorption of phenol and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions could be well described by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. Adsorption of phenol decreased with the increasing degree of carbon oxidation as well as its decreasing specific surface area. Adsorption of the Cu(II) ions increased with the increasing degree of carbon surface oxidation indicating an important role of acidic groups in adsorption of metal ions by ion-exchange mechanism. Furthermore, ammonium persulfate was demonstrated to be an efficient oxidizing agent as carbon oxidation under even the mildest conditions (0.1 mol/dm3, 30 min) led to a significant increase in the oxygen bound (about 3-4 times) as well as the Cu(II) ions adsorbed. The amount of the adsorbed phenol decreased only slightly.

Opis:
In this article, we present the results of the first application of 2–benzoylpyridine (2–BP) as a carrier in adsorptive polymeric materials dedicated for the removal of Ag(I) and Cu(II) ions from model acidic solutions. In the first stage of the research, the classical solvent extraction, in which 2–BP was used as an extractant, allowed to determine the proper conditions for conducting adsorptive processes. The stability constants of 2–BP complexes with analyzed metal ions were determined using the spectrophotometric method. The electrospray ionization (ESI) high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) method was applied for the confirmation of the ability of 2–BP molecules to form complexes with Cu2 ̧ metal ions in a solution and to determine the elemental composition of generated complexes (to identify the ratio of the number of metal ions to the number of molecules of 2–BP). The obtained results indicate that both the adsorptive processes and solvent extraction strongly depend on the properties of metal ions and that the use of 2–BP as a carrier/extractant allows for efficient removal of silver(I) ions and much less effective removal of copper(II) ions. The utilization of adsorptive polymeric materials is in line with the contemporary research trends that focus on eco-friendly and cost-effective methods.

The soils consist of various components that can play a significant role in control of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, understanding of adsorption properties of soil is essential in solving pollution problems around mine sites. The goal of this paper is to study Zn(II) ions adsorption onto copper mine soil. Soils were examined via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of various parameters such as effect of pH, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration of Zn(II) ions on adsorption was evaluated by batch method. The adsorption isotherms of Zn(II) ions such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin were studied. The Langmuir isotherm indicated an excellent fit for the experimental data in comparison with other isotherms that shown monolayer adsorption onto a homogenous surface. A number of kinetic models were tested to fit the kinetic data. The results show that soils can be more effective in decreasing heavy metals contamination specially Zn(II) ions from solution phase.
