Opis:
As we know relatively little about the development of wisdom in youth, the following study was designed to examine whether and how wise functioning would predict coping strategies in adolescents. As layperson’s implicit theories of wisdom suggest that wisdom varies by age, we wanted to see if and how age might correlate with wisdom, and examine the role of age as a mediator between wisdom and coping. Consequently, this article provides some initial evidence indicating that wise thinking, behaving, and age are related to coping strategies. It seems that wise individuals act when confronted with adversity and obstacles, focusing on the benefits that follow from stressful events. At the same time, they try to avoid using responses that are commonly considered less adaptive or immature: denial or substance use. These choices may be related to the equilibrium between knowledge and doubt that is believed to be the core of wisdom. Therefore, being wise lies not in what is known, but rather in the way in which the knowledge is used in everyday life and experienced as time passes by.

Introduction and objective. Adapting to gynaecological cancer is the problem of accepting and coping with the disease and its consequences. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between stress intensity and strategies for coping with stress and psychological adaptation to disease in women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. Materials and method. The study was performed on a group of 102 women diagnosed with gynaecologic malignancy. The mean age of patients was 56.1 (SD ±10.75) years. Three self- designed questionnaires were used to carry out the study: Scale of Perceived Stress (PSS-10), Multidimensional Inventory for Measuring Coping with Stress (Mini-COPE) and the Scale of Mental Adaptation to Cancer (Mini-MAC). Statistical significance was set at p <0.05. Results. In more than half of the women surveyed, the severity of stress experienced during the last month was high. Women with a malignant illness significantly differed (p<0.001) in the styles of coping with the disease, preferring a constructive style (M=43.5; SD±5.76) rather than a destructive style (M=21.7; SD±5.28). The highest median values were obtained by positive revalidation (M=21.9; SD±3.01) and fighting spirit (M=21.6; SD±3.47) strategies. The most prominent indicator of predicting a constructive style of coping with cancer was the coping strategy described as Positive Revalidation (ßeta=0.38; R²=0.41); whereas an Acceptance strategy was a predictor of a destructive style (ßeta=-0.30; R²=0.31). Conclusions. Most women facing gynaecological cancer experience a high level of stress, and try to use active strategies to deal with the disease. The results indicate that there is a need to offer special psychological care to oncologically diagnosed women.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate mental health and coping strategies among nursing staff in two public hospitals of Greece. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 318 nurses working in two public hospitals in Attica, Greece from February 2017 to May 2017. Data were collected using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-2) and the Greek version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The data were presented as mean and standard deviation and analyzed through student tâ“test, chi-square, and descript_ive statistics using SPSS Version 21.0. The significance level was accepted as P values <0.05. Results: Data analysis revealed that 44% of nurses were suffering from depression and 40.3% from anxiety, with the type of hospital (p≤ 0.001) and marital status (p = 0.031) affecting stress levels. Conclusions: Working in mental health hospital and married nurses were the main risk factors for manifestation of anxiety/depression symptoms among nursing staff. Individual nurse characteristics, such as working experience as well as working environment (general and mental health hospital) were found to be associated with the nurses’ coping strategies in their attempt to deal with their work.

From time to time media reports frighten us about the events, which have similar, tragic scenarios – a student with a gun in their hand enters the school and his or her classmates, colleagues, teachers. The results of analyzes of fifteen school shootings in the United States, show that peer ostracism, intimidation, and love rejection, are the main determinants of these tragic events and experiencing social ostracism explained 87% of these cases (Leary et al., 2003). Ostracism hurts in the literal sense and mercilessly strikes the basic psychological needs. Consequently, the pain often leads to outbursts of irrational, socially unacceptable behavior (Williams, 2007). It is necessary, therefore, to focus on the consequences of being rejected by peers. This article raises the issue of youth coping strategies with ostracism.

Opis:
When faced with a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, the patient attempts to cope with the stressful situation by applying coping strategies. The main aim of rheumatoid treatment is not only improving health but also increasing the quality of life. The research objective was to determine the relationship among socio-demographic factors, duration of the disease and its associated ailments, attitude to the disease, self-assessment of one’s knowledge of RA, and the application of coping strategies in stressful situations by women with rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 193 patients of the Clinic of Rheumatology and Systemic Connective Tissue Diseases, and the Rheumatology Unit of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic of the Independent Public Teaching Hospital No. 4 in Lublin, from November 2016 – June 2017. The Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE) Questionnaire and an author’s Original Questionnaire were used in the study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s range test were applied for statistical analysis. A p-value<0.05 defined the statistical differences. Analysis was performed using the commercial SPSS Statistics 19 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The respondents usually use instrumental social support (11.5±1.7), focus on and vent emotions (11.4±1.9), use emotional social support (11.4±1.8), employ active coping (11.4±2.1) and positive reinterpretation and growth (11.2±1.8), and least often rely on their sense of humour (5.5±1.4) or use alcohol or drugs (5±1.1). The factors which determine the types of strategy used are age, education, the duration of the disease, ailments experienced, and attitude towards the disease. Those respondents who declared a greater knowledge of RA more often applied positive reinterpretation and growth, and more rarely used alcohol or drugs. In the treatment and rehabilitation processes it is important to reinforce in the patient positive expectations for the treatment, seek advantages and benefits in one’s present health status, and educate patients about the disease, its therapy and appropriate coping strategies.

Stress is an integral part of our lives. It also applies to our childhood. That is why it is so important to know how children cope with stress (how they learn coping strategies) and to equip them with the skill set to cope constructively with stressful situations throughout life. This article describes strategies for coping with stress that are characteristic for children at the end of early school education. They have been identified in the course of my own research aimed at characterizing child stress and relate to a fragment of research activities aimed at 8- and 9-year-old children. The research established that in some children the developmental process of coping with stress has started: children look for, investigate, and think how to cope with difficulties. In this struggle, however, they focus on people ho could be a source of support for them in coping with stressful situations. Among children’s stress coping strategies, an important role is also played by emotionally focused strategies, which are aimed at reducing negative emotions and arousing positive emotions.

A case study was conducted at Madhyanepal Municipality, Lamjung to access the food security status and the coping strategy of Dalit community. Information was collected from the 60 Dalit households through livelihood analysis, problem ranking and community discussion tools of participatory rural appraisal. The research revealed that the majority of the households (46.875%) have food sufficiency for less than 3 months, as the figures for household food sufficiency for 3-6 months, 6-9 months and 9-12 months are 31.25%, 6.25%, 15.625%, respectively. The research also showed that none of the household have year round food sufficiency. The major reason associated with this outcome was low land ownership (36%), followed by infertile land (28%) lack of manpower (20%), predators (12%) and diseases (4%). To become more food secure and in response to the food deficit condition, households have adopted coping strategies such as share cropping, seasonal migration within or outside the country, remittances, casual laboring, selling off livestock and borrowing food or money.

Opis:
The Strategic Approach to Coping Scale (SACS) is a measure based on the Multiaxial Model of Coping. The original version of the scale consists of nine subscales, which form three second-order factors. An up-to-date review of SACS cultural adaptations was provided in order to examine the evidence for the cultural stability of SACS first- and second-level structures. The review demonstrated that among the SACS first-level factors some are more culturally stable and some are more sensitive to cultural context. The second-order structure of the SACS is more interculturally stable, especially the active–passive and social factors have a robust empirical justification.

Self-efficacy can affect an individual’s thoughts and emotions. It can be related to self-regulation processes and coping strategies. The aim of the study was to try to answer the question of whether there are correlations between the mentioned variables. To test this, an online survey was designed on the Google Forms platform, which included sociodemographic questions and three questionnaires: General Self-Efficacy Scale, COPE Inventory, Self Regulation Formative Questionnaire. The survey was prepared in English. The survey included 470 participants from Poland and Spain. The study was conducted during increased stress, which is the exam session. The result of the statistical analysis confirmed the accepted hypothesis. Strategies used in coping with stress are related to the level of selfregulation and self-efficacy. The higher the sense of self-efficacy, the more frequent the selection of favorable coping strategies, as well as the higher the level of self-regulation, the more frequent the selection of adaptive strategies and the rarer the selection of adaptive coping strategies. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the literature on the topic and previous studies, and it is suggested that further studies be conducted in a different context, taking into account that the results of self-efficacy or self-regulation could be different during intensified stress, for instance before or after an exam.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The prevalence of poverty among Nigerian households and limited social safety nets predispose the country to health shock. Health shocks are associated with adverse economic consequences: they raise medical expenditure and reduce household consumption. The household responds with informal coping mechanism to smoothen consumption. The coping strategies are limited to household asset endowment and access to credit facility. This study examines the effect of health shock on changes in household consumption and investigates the coping strategies employed in the face of health shock. Design/methodology/approach – The study is anchored on the full-insurance theory. Data were obtained from two waves of the General Household Survey (GHS) panel, 2011 and 2013. The GHS covered 5,000 households across the six geopolitical zones. Three measures of HS, death of a household member, disability and severe illness, were used. The household consumption was divided into food and non-food. A fixed effect model was estimated to examine the impact of health shock on change in consumption. Multinomial Logit Model was used to determine the coping strategies used by households. Findings – Disability and death had a negative effect on food consumption. Death decreased non-food consumption of households, while disability was not statistically significant. Severe illness had significant positive impact on consumption. Borrowing significantly affected the ability of households to maintain consumption. Death reduced rural household consumption in Nigeria. Borrowing was the most prominent coping strategy. Research implications/limitations – Provision of financial protection against health shocks such as payment of disability benefits and assistance to households that report death should be encouraged by the government. The sample was limited to those that reported illness in the four weeks preceding the GHS, thereby excluding those whose illness preceded 28 days before the survey. Originality/value/contribution – Rural-urban dichotomy among households in Nigeria was acknowledged in examining the relationship between health shocks and variation in consumption.

The present study examined the relationship between two EI abilities (emotion recognizing and emotion understanding) and stress coping strategies in adolescent men and women. The data were collected from 1033 Polish high school students (520 men and 512 women) aged 18-20 years (Mage = 18.46 years). Coping strategies were assessed using the COPE inventory and emotional abilities were measured using the Emotional Intelligence Scale – Faces (SIE-T) and the Emotion Understanding Test (TRE). The results supported the existence of an association between EI abilities and coping strategies. The analyses of the interaction effects revealed the moderating role of gender on some of the relationships between EI abilities and coping strategies.

Maintaining high levels of well-being in the face of a chronic disease requires utilization of many psychosocial resources in the coping process. The efficacy of this process depends on using coping strategies that fit to the specificity of a particular chronic disease. The aim of this study was to show the relationships between well-being and coping strategies, and less studied constructs such as resiliency and personal empowerment among people with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The study comprised 100 participants (59 with type I diabetes and 41 with rheumatoid arthritis) who completed a set of questionnaires measuring wellbeing, strategies of coping with stress, resiliency and personal empowerment. As expected, there was a significant indirect effect of resiliency on well-being through mediators such as personal empowerment and disease-specific coping strategies. The results support the significant determinants of well-being among people with chronic diseases. They also indicated a more complex structure of the variables in which resiliency plays a major role for the well-being by the means of coping strategies and personal empowerment.

The Strategic Approach to Coping Scale (SACS) is a tool designed to measure coping strategies in terms of the Multiaxial Model of Coping. The aim of this article is to present our work towards adapting the SACS to the Polish cultural context. The Polish translation of this measure and the Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank were applied to 1,074 Poles from 11 sample groups at risk of social exclusion. Principal component analysis performed on the data showed six components rather than the original nine. Second-order factor analysis carried out on the subscale scores revealed three factors partially consistent with the original theoretical assumptions. Convergences and discrepancies of the resulting structure versus the original one are discussed, along with reliability and the preliminary theoretical validity of the method.

Opis:
The study was undertaken to determine the extent of positive changes in adolescents who have experienced negative life events and establish the role of coping strategies in this process. The research group consists of 130 adolescents, of which 54% said that had experienced negative life event. 60 persons were included in the examined group, of which 56.7% were boys. The age of teenagers ranged 16-17 years (M = 16.53; SD = 0.50). Personality Growth Questionnaire for the assessment of positive changes and Coping Responses Inventory – youth (CRI-48) to measure coping strategies with stress (both dispositional and situational version) were used in the study. The results indicated that slightly more than 28% of respondents reveal high level of personal growth. Significantly larger are the changes related to appreciation of life than self-perception and relations with others. Situational strategies appeared to significantly relate with personal growth. Taking actions aimed at solving the problem appeared to be the predictor of positive changes in self-perception. Seeking social support and alternative reinforcements are predictors of changes in relations with others.

Opis:
The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 shattered Western illusions of peace and security, raining tensions on both a macro and micro level. This article was thus inspired by how the war had affected Philology students in Poland, specifically emphasising the city of Rzeszow, which lies close to the Ukrainian border. The aim assigned to the research project was to investigate levels of resilience among students and how this correlates with stress levels and to further investigate the potential coping strategies adopted by the students to mitigate their anxiety levels. What has been shown is that there is a correlation between the proximity of students to graduation and the levels of anxiety they felt about their future employment prospects and that the most common method for coping with stress was to become actively involved in assisting in the most immediate manifestation of the cause of the stress, in this case assisting refugees.

coping strategies at university
Opis:
In context of current psychological and pedagogical works, pupils/students are treated as active „players” who are able to deal with unfavorable educational environment effectively. In response to that, they experience in schools or universities every day, they use different strategies of coping with formal and informal requirements. These strategies are one of the dimensions of the so-called hidden curriculum. The purpose of this article is - on the basis of the content’s analysis of the UJ pedagogy student essays - to reconstruct the students strategies of coping in university and its determinants. Studying at the university students gain an informal knowledge that pedagogy is a low social status field of studying, is not particularly forwardlooking, the education they obtain is incomplete. To increase their chances at the labor market, they are taking part in various forms of training, also outside of the university. This spontaneous activity gives them worldly wisdom, sense of agency, personal growth, developing self-confidence and a better future. The attractiveness of the so-called patchwork education weakens their interest in official knowledge and formal education. Students learn many negative coping strategies at the university. Their primary goal is to gain profits - graduation - while minimizing their time and commitment. Strategies used by them survival and „working an angle” are examples of violations of the law, teach instrumental approach to: knowledge, teachers or peers. The results of the research showed that these strategies have demoralizing effect on other students, reducing their motivation and academic ambitions. A number of the strategies referred to in the paper disclose different dimensions of bogus student life and undermine various myths concerning the centuries-old mission of the university.

Opis:
The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Secondly, the review of literature on employees’ exposed to bullying at work responses to negative workplace activities is presented. Finally, the results of studies comparing targets’ and non-targets’ strategies on various stages of bullying development are described. The findings indicate that employees previously exposed to bullying at work at the very early stage of conflict respond in a way that may be interpreted as unconstructive while those who encounter single conflicts at work intensify their endeavors to make a good impression, and try to gain social support from their surrounding interpersonal relationships. Bullying targets seek support and use strategies based on co-operation when the conflict is severe and difficult to solve. The article ends with directions for future studies aiming at identifying strategies for prevention programs.
