This paper is devoted to the study of a multi-step method with divided differences for solving nonlinear equations in Banach spaces. In earlier studies, hypotheses on the Fréchet derivative up to the sixth order of the operator under consideration is used to prove the convergence of the method. That restricts the applicability of the method. In this paper we extended the applicability of the sixth-order multi-step method by using only hypotheses on the first derivative of the operator involved. Our convergence conditions are weaker than the conditions used in earlier studies. Numerical examples where earlier results cannot be applied to solve equations but our results can be applied are also given in this study.

The research discussed in the article concerned the level of development of agriculture in Poland. The main aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis of convergence of the economic size of farms. The analysis confirmed the existence of -convergence, however, showed no occurrence of σ-convergence and γ-convergence. Based on the results of the analysis of marginal vertical -convergence, Poland was divided into two clubs with different paths of development. In one of them the process of convergence was confirmed, but in the second one the phenomenon of divergence was revealed.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the dynamics of regional disparities on NUTS 2 level in Poland for the period 1990–2017 within the framework of sigma convergence. We focus in particular on comparing the patterns of regional convergence before and after EU accession, introducing the methodology of parallel sigma convergence. The results show that the Mazowieckie voivodeship grew much above the average in both the pre-and post-accession periods, while eastern regions lagged behind. EU accession did not have a significant impact on the pattern of internal sigma convergence in Poland. Disparities between regions were increasing at the same pace before and after 2004, despite significant resources having been allocated to cohesion-focused undertakings after EU accession, especially in lagging eastern regions.

The conditions under which this sequence converges to an optimal solution for the limit problem are given.

Since the trigonometric Fourier series of an integrable function does not necessarily converge to the function in the mean, several additional conditions have been devised to guarantee the convergence. For instance, sufficient conditions can be constructed by using the Fourier coefficients or the integral modulus of the corresponding function. In this paper we give a Hardy-Karamata type Tauberian condition on the Fourier coefficients and prove that it implies the convergence of the Fourier series in integral norm, almost everywhere, and if the function itself is in the real Hardy space, then also in the Hardy norm. We also compare it to the previously known conditions.

Extreme learning machine (ELM) is an efficient algorithm, but it requires more hidden nodes than the BP algorithms to reach the matched performance. Recently, an efficient learning algorithm, the upper-layer-solution-unaware algorithm (USUA), is proposed for the single-hidden layer feed-forward neural network. It needs less number of hidden nodes and testing time than ELM. In this paper, we mainly give the theoretical analysis for USUA. Theoretical results show that the error function monotonously decreases in the training procedure, the gradient of the error function with respect to weights tends to zero (the weak convergence), and the weight sequence goes to a fixed point (the strong convergence) when the iterations approach positive infinity. An illustrated simulation has been implemented on the MNIST database of handwritten digits which effectively verifies the theoretical results.

The European Union is currently facing a serious problem concerning the occurrence of significant health inequalities observed between particular member states as well as within these states. Substantial efforts are being made to achieve an economic and social cohesion and the reduction of health inequalities between the EU regions is an important element of this process. This work is devoted to the study of the variations of health status (measured by life expectancy) across the EU regions of NUTS II level. We apply existing tools developed in economic growth literature to study a mortality convergence. Using the idea of unconditional convergence model developed for economic growth, we can confirm a decrease or increase of regional health inequalities. The main research hypothesis is as follows: whether regions with lower initial life expectancies have experienced the largest increases in life expectancies. To verify the hypothesis of beta-convergence we use spatial econometric models which additionally allow to take the geographic dependence among the surveyed regions into consideration. Due to the heterogeneity of the surveyed spatial units we also verify the hypothesis of the club beta-convergence.

Opis:
The study constitutes an attempt to join the discussion about the importance of assessing convergence in the process of enlargement of European monetary union and it focuses on the comparative aspect of the degree of similarity of Polish economy in relation to the euro area and of countries that are already part of the single currency area. The aim of the article is to present the results of the indicator analysis of real convergence, which unlike the nominal one, gives a fuller picture of the desirability of state’s participation in the monetary union. These results, on the one hand, allow to draw certain conclusions regarding Poland and supporting the process of choosing the date of adoption of the euro, and on the other hand, help to determine if during the post-crisis period there occurred tendencies indicating an increase of the degree of similarity of economies already using the common currency. The research related, apart from Poland, to selected euro zone member states: France, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Lithuania, Germany, Slovakia and Italy. For the purpose of the study, it was accepted that an appropriately broad selection of indicators, allowing to achieve the necessary objectivity degree of assessment of countries’ real convergence in relation to the entire euro area, would consist of: growth rate of real GDP and correlation coefficients relating to this measure, GDP per capita as a determinant of income, GDP per hour worked as an indicator of labour productivity, hourly labour costs, level of long-term unemployment, structure of gross value added, changes in the real exchange rate, long-term real interest rate and real money market rate (which, at the same level of the nominal short-term interest rate in the euro zone, is determined in each member state by the prices’ level growth rate). As the research period the years of 2004-2014 were adopted. The conducted indicator analysis of real convergence allowed to formulate a number of observations: the degree of similarity of the analysed economies to the whole monetary union is different in most cases, depending on which sphere is related to a measure; the scale of convergence of individual economies in relation to the euro zone also varies; in respect of the analysed countries, it is difficult to notice a trend towards deepening the scale of convergence in the post-crisis period; in the case of Poland, one should not rather talk about the similarity, but about far-reaching real divergences in relation to the euro zone, which result in postponing a reasonable moment to adopt the common currency.

Within thirty years, the relation between the Internet and the scientific activity has changed profoundly. The Internet has shifted from being an instrument of academic collaboration to being a tool used by social media, allowing for a maximum diffusion of irrationalism and alt-factualism. To understand this change, one needs re-examine the mechanisms of opinion convergence. This convergence stems primarily from the existence of the world we share, which exposes us to the same facts and determines the constant revision of each person’s beliefs. In this process of asymptotic opinion convergence, no communication between individuals is required. Of course, if the facts known by some are communicated to others, this convergence accelerates considerably, so much so that we must regard knowledge as a result of collective activity, and the exchange of information as one of its crucial sources. On the one hand, this epistemic cooperation seems natural and easy to implement. Given the properties of information, which is an asset we keep even if we share it, the sharing of information is not subject to the usual difficulties related to cooperation. Defection provides no profit, making the prisoner’s dilemma not applicable to epistemic cooperation. On the other hand, such cooperation is productive by nature: the collaboration of the one who knowns φ and the one who knows that φ implies ψ results in both agents having the knowledge of ψ, which neither of them had before the exchange. The earlier Internet allowed for an extreme intensity of this informational cooperation. At present, we are dealing with a different kind of situation. Several factors, including the growing porosity between scientists and the public, have strengthened the role of exchange. It is not an exchange of information, but an exchange of opinions. The biases inherent to human nature, and especially the confirmation bias, tends to reverse the relationship between facts and opinions. We search for the facts confirming the opinions we hold, doubt those which undermine them and create facts to corroborate what we believe. Hence, we go from cooperation to affiliation, dividing the Internet into homogenic groups of believers.

The academic literature in the past has frequently highlighted that the European Commission (EC) tends to provide more accurate public finance forecasts compared with national governments, thanks to its neutrality. The recent conflicts regarding the excessive deficit procedure with Romania and Italy and rule of law with Hungary and Poland raises the question of whether such conclusions are still binding. Therefore, we analysed a panel of forecasts submitted by the national governments with an annual update of Convergence programmes and corresponding EC predictions. Our dataset contains predictions of the general government deficit, revenues and expenditures for EU27 economies and the United Kingdom in the years 2014–2019. First, the analysis shows no meaningful discrepancies between both estimates when the horizon is set at the current year. Forecasts for the next year have equal accuracy in the case of government revenues and expenditures. However, the EC performs worse in the case of the final deficit. Second, cross-country effects are present, but the accuracy is different mainly in the very small economies, that is, the Baltic countries, Cyprus, Malta and Luxembourg. Amongst the more populated states, the EC outperforms the Slovakian and Denmark governments but has worse performance than the Irish, Portuguese and Spanish governments. We also do not see evidence of any political bias in the forecasts.

European old-age pension systems face multiple challenges. On the one hand, governments are concerned with the fiscal effects of ageing societies. On the other hand, there is a social pressure on maintaining standards of living during the retirement. Such tension is one of the most significant socio-economic conflicts in modern politics. During last 25 years, policy makers tried to answer these challenges by pension reforms. In general, a trend towards reducing social rights can be distinguished, which is to a significantly smaller extent accompanied by improvement of coverage and benefit levels for some groups. This research analyses old-age pension reform trajectories in three European countries: Greece, France and Germany. It focuses on the generosity of pension benefits, access to pensions, and anti-poverty function of the pension systems. The paper assesses, whether over a period 1990–2015, a convergence took place between the countries and if yes, what was its direction.

Głównym kierunkiem konwergencji społecznej i gospodarczej w ukraińsko-polskim regionie transgranicznym w ciągu ostatniej dekady była konwergencja produktu regionalnego brutto per capita.
The main factors contributing to the convergence in the financial and investment area of the Polish-Ukrainian cross-border region in the current conditions of European integration are the intensification of cross-border investment processes in the banking and insurance sectors, increasing the efficiency of the use of funds allocated to EU technical assistance programs, as well as the launch of joint cross-border activities of financial institutions. The main direction of social and economic convergence in the Ukrainian-Polish cross-border region over the last decade was the convergence of gross regional product per capita.

Opis:
The authors set out to determine if the convergence theory passes the test in 25 transition economies. On the basis of statistical data for the years 1991-2004, using an econometric model, they analyze the influence of GDP per employee on the growth of labor productivity. They also consider other factors with an influence on sustainable economic growth. Considering the significant heterogeneity of the analyzed economies in terms of market reforms and institutional conditions, the authors divided the sample into three relatively homogenous groups: 10 new European Union member states excluding Cyprus and Malta; 12 CIS countries; and five Southern and Eastern European economies. The authors evaluated conditional convergence in individual groups of economies, concluding that economies with lower GDP per employee at the start of transition were characterized by a higher rate of growth for most of the analyzed period. GDP per employee primarily depended on investment in physical and human capital, the share of government spending in GDP and inflation. Moreover, the analysis showed that convergence processes in individual countries led to converging long-term economic growth rates, which were positive rather than neutral, contrary to the classic convergence theory.

It can be regarded as we have a problem with the application of its provisions to the content present in the network in terms of law because regulations on media infiltrate boundaries – so, and the media themselves. Polish law is not adapted to the changing technology reality. And it is not only the universal use of social media. Traditional media also taking into account the convergence process are present in the network. The purpose of this publication is to analyze certain aspects of legal regulations concerning the distribution of content in cyberspace – on the basis of the law in Poland the media. To demonstrate that self-regulation in the area of electronic media has the great advantage that it can go in a relatively short distance for the development of “new” media. In contrast, new, precise regulations in the matter of electronic media are difficult to be implemented in a short time.

Eurostat’s projections indicate that by 2050 Poland will see a significant reduction in and ageing of its labour resources. The country is experiencing a strong polarization of demographic phenomena and disproportions in population structure. The goal of the study was to determine whether Poland’s labour resources are undergoing convergence or divergence. The occurrence of beta, sigma and gamma-convergence in the country’s individual provinces (voivodeships) in the period 2012-2018 was verified. Three models were created (working age population ratio, young-age dependency ratio and old-age dependency ratio). The results indicate the occurrence of absolute (unconditional) beta-convergence of the variables that characterise labour resources. No unambiguous confirmation of sigma-convergence, i.e. a significant reduction in the diversification of the provinces in terms of the studied variables, was obtained. Similarly, the occurrence of gamma-convergence, i.e. a significant change in the positions of the provinces in terms of labour resources, was not unambiguously confirmed.
Weryfikowano występowanie konwergencji beta, sigma i gamma w województwach w latach 2012-2018.

Technology convergence (TC) can integrate new technologies, methods and processes into traditional industries. It can accelerate the transformation and upgrading of these industries, and is of great significance to their development. The purpose of our research is to reveal the impact of the mechanism of technology integration on the textile industry and conduct empirical research. This study firstly builds the linear and non-linear mechanism of the impact of TC on the development of China’s textile industry. Empirical research is conducted based on the panel fixed effect model and panel threshold model. The results are as follows: (1) TC significantly contributes to the performance of China’s textile industry, as endogenous convergence can significantly promote industrial performance, while the effect of exogenous convergence is insignificant; (2) TC has a double-threshold effect, with its coefficient being largest at a medium level; and (3) TC has an enterprise scale threshold, in which its effect indicates that only when the scale exceeds the threshold can TC more effectively foster industry performance. The significance of these results for the development of China’s textile industry is that they strengthen the level of TC for it to be convergent with emerging industries, as well as increase the size and absorptive capacity of enterprises.

Opis:
Research background: Poland and Spain share many common features resulting both from similarities of historical experience, and also cultural, political, socio-demographic factors. Both countries have a similar area, population and GDP structure. They also share historical experience related to political and economic transformation after a long period of non-democratic, centralized governments. Therefore, the experience of Spanish membership in the EU is often considered as a model for Poland. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this research is to perform a comparative empirical analysis of income convergence processes in Poland and Spain on a regional level. We aim to verify if and how these processes are related to one another (show similar paths). Special attention is paid to the periods after accession of these countries to the EU. Convergence patterns in both countries are compared with several tools. Methods: Spatial econometric model for absolute beta convergence, sigma convergence indicators and the analysis of distribution dynamics — transition matrices and kernel density estimation. Findings & Value added: The impact on EU accession on income convergence in Spain was positive both at the national and regional level. Regional convergence processes sped-up and interregional disparities decreased. The poorest subregions had relatively high probability to increase their income and catch-up with initially more developed regions. In the first decade after accession to the EU Poland has also achieved a significant improvement of income indicators at the national level. However, empirical analyses of GDP per capita distribution and its dynamics at the regional level in Poland show that the above mentioned progress does not spread out proportionally on all regions. Neither beta nor sigma convergence is observed. Instead, relatively fastest growth of initially richest regions (mostly large cities) introduces convergence of clubs leading to polarization. EU accession has accelerated divergence processes in Poland.

The negative effects of the last financial and economic crisis as seen in the deterioration of the state of public finances of the eurozone Member States highlighted weaknesses in the present institutional system. The fact that structural reforms have stopped, as well as unfavourable demographic changes, make the convergence processes and the growth of eurozone economies slow down. Increasing divergence with regard to trade balance deficits, budget deficits, investments and private savings is a significant limiting factor here. The aim of this paper is to answer the question as to whether the present situation of the eurozone economies is of a convergent or divergent nature. For this purpose the following have been analysed and assessed: the last financial crisis' consequences for eurozone countries; basic indicators related to the EU Member States' macroeconomic situation; domestic economies convergence/divergence in the eurozone - in relation to other Member States; increased divergence of regional development within a country, the so-called regional divergence; criteria of convergence; macroeconomic factors and – as mentioned before – the listed indicators resulting from the research method adopted . The method of study in this paper was the analysis of the risk of the eurozone's macroeconomic imbalance on the basis of the three-gap model. Results of the analysis showed significant imbalances within individual economies in terms of all the above mentioned parameters. This analysis showed the increasing trend related to eurozone divergence.

Opis:
The article discusses the convergence of unemployment rates at the county level in Poland in 1999-2006, on the basis of available statistical data. The authors examine both β- and δ-convergence; the former involves the relationship between the growth of the unemployment rate and its initial level, and the latter is based on an analysis of the dispersion of the rates and their changes over time. The authors use methods that enable them to examine changes in the distribution of the analyzed variables. These methods include transition matrices and a nonparametric kernel estimation method. Transition matrices make it possible to determine the likelihood of a county’s unemployment rate increasing, decreasing or remaining constant, while classifying the rates into several brackets. Kernel estimation, in turn, makes it possible to analyze the full conditional function of the density of the distribution of the unemployment rate at the county level and its changes over time. These methods were borrowed from research into regional convergence for income. They make it possible to detect the occurrence of polarization, or the so-called club convergence. The analysis of unemployment rates at the county level in 1999-2006 reveals a far-reaching stability of the regional distribution of unemployment rates-in terms of both monthly and yearly changes. Over the past seven years, no δ-convergence has occurred. The researchers have only detected slightly growing similarities between labor markets in counties with the highest relative unemployment rates. The analysis of β-convergence reveals a far-reaching divergence of unemployment levels in individual counties in Poland. This trend is less pronounced in counties with the lowest relative unemployment rates, while being markedly stronger on labor markets heavily affected by joblessness. Overall, the study places a question mark over the effectiveness of cohesion policies carried out in Poland through various channels since 1999.

Opis:
The article discusses conditional β-convergence in 126 countries around the world in 1975-2003. The authors offer a theoretical model to explain the essence of convergence. Unlike in most empirical studies, the authors assume that convergence, or the relationship between the rate of economic growth and the initial level of GDP, is not constant but changes over time. The model was constructed on the basis of panel data, using the Fixed Effects estimator and the Generalized Method of Moments estimator developed by Arellano and Bond. The results of the evaluation confirm the existence of β-convergence, which is much faster than suggested by most empirical studies. When per capita GDP is 1% higher, the rate of growth falls by 0.20-0.22 percentage points on average. The β-convergence indicator ranges from 22% to 25%. By assuming that convergence is not constant, the authors proved that there is a strong relationship between the initial level of GDP and the rate of economic growth. This shows that their assumption was fully justified as the main hypothesis of the analysis.

The convergence aspect has fundamental meaning for European Union countries. For removal the developmental disparities between EU member states and their regions is intended the largest part of UE budget. According to the above, this article is an attempt to verify the process of income and technological convergence across EU countries in years 2000–2011. The analysis is based on classical measures: β- and σ-convergence using variables: GDP per capita, summary innovation index (SII), work productivity, employment in high tech sector and export of high tech goods. The author also evaluated variation coefficient of work productivity and revealed comparative advantage index for specialization in high tech sector. The scrutiny confirms convergence in income and technological area during analyzing period. In spite of the fact, the global crisis heavy affected this process and caused its limitation.

The study deals with content media convergence, i.e. the fragmentation of media into different forms and formats in order to reach new audiences. The main thesis is that this form of convergence, which has been observable in the media segment over the last decades, has in recent years started to be deliberately and purposefully implemented in the digital games segment as well, and game studios are trying to reach audiences that are not players of the original game from which the media content converged through the creation of media content. However, not in order to attract them to play the game, which could be considered a classic marketing strategy, but in order to create a narrative and intermedia universe from which each converged part can have a separate audience, for which it is not necessary to know the whole universe. The study proves this through a case study of the game League of Legends by the game studio Riot Games and on the contents that converged from the game, through a discursive content analysis in the categories of gaming segment, audio-visual contents, music, social networks and other contents. The study concludes that the analysis supports the thesis that League of Legends converges and is able to fully reach non-gamer audiences.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the results of a study on the convergence of financial accounting and management accounting in companies operating in Poland against the background of international solutions. The survey, carried out in 2017, was used to collect data. Based on the questionnaire returned by 40 companies, it was found that the level of convergence of financial accounting and management accounting in Polish enterprises is moderate. The number of worldwide studies on the convergence of accounting is very limited, and in Poland they are quite unique. For this reason, the study presented in this article is relevant both for science and the practice of accounting.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present Gomorra by Roberto Saviano as the largest contemporary transmedia project in Italy, which includes theatre play, movie, drama series and many other satellite works. In particular, the paper shows how the book fits into the concept of convergence culture by Henry Jenkins. The article provides answers to questions about fandom of Gomorra, about specific realizations of some of Saviano’s stories, about the nature of the relation between grassroots fan culture and creators of official productions and about the role of the writer himself in all these processes.

Opis:
Research background: Given the pivotal role of innovations and technological progress in shaping the economic development of regions and the crucial significance of spatial dimension of innovation processes at the regional level, the assessment of technological convergence in the regional scope becomes an essential research problem. Technological convergence could be identified on the basis of the analysis of total factor productivity (TFP). The significance of the technological convergence analysis results from the fact that income convergence can be both accelerated or impeded, depending on whether the initial differences in the level of technology (TFP) decrease or increase over time. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we attempt to develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the technological convergence. Secondly, we investigate the technological convergence (on the basis of the TFP analysis) across European regions. Methods: During the first stage of the research, we employ the multiplicatively-complete Färe-Primont index to calculate TFP. The second stage of the study includes estimation of spatial panel models applied to assess the level of technological convergence across European regions. The research sample consists of 273 NUTS 2 European Union (EU) regions over the period 2010? 2016. Findings & Value added: The results of the study confirm a clear division of Europe into the Western European regions with high TFP values and the Eastern European regions with low TFP level. The research also shows that in the Eastern European regions the process of reducing the differences in the productivity levels is faster than in Western European regions. Since the issue of technological convergence is still not sufficiently explored in the relevant literature our paper attempts to fill a cognitive and methodological gap in the investigation of the technological convergence in the European regional space.

Arzelá [1] considered the weaker form of uniform convergence which is as good as uniform convergence of sequences of functions in respect to continuity of the limit of a sequence of continuous functions. Some generalization of such convergence can be found in [5]. Similar kinds of convergence of function sequences were considered in [3] and [4]. In our article we generalize those kinds of convergence for functions defined in a topological space with values in a topological space. In the article we use terminology which is explained in Engelking's monograph “General Topology” [2]. Among others, we use the notion of a star with respect to an open over. If X is a topological space and α is a cover of this space, then the star St(x, α) of a point x ϵ X with respect to the cover α is defined as the union of all the sets from α which contain the point x, i.e. [wzór].

Opis:
The authors have studied Instagram profiles of women’s magazines published in Poland, France and the United Kingdom: Twój Styl, Vogue PL, Marie Claire, Vogue FR, Vogue GB and Stylist. All (464) posts published on Instagram profiles in April 2022 were analyzed. The aim of the research was to show similarities and differences in the ways of communication via Instagram profiles. This paper’s chosen methodology is qualitive and quantitative content analysis and is based on types of posts and their functions and on audience reactions to posted content. The results proved that the similarities emerge between the profiles of magazines that operate in specific media markets – the content and communication is adapted to the country in which the magazine operates. This study contributes to academic literature on the integration of traditional media with new media as a response to media convergence.

Opis:
Research background: The role of human capital in modern economy development is as important as that of material growth factors. According to the three-sector model theory, economic growth is associated with the process of labour force leaving the primary sector. The research issue addressed in this paper was the human capital level estimation in European NUTS 2 regions and the relationship between the human capital level and sectoral structure of the economy. Purpose of the article: The article aimed to verify the hypotheses of absolute and conditional human capital convergence in European NUTS 2 regions. The analysis covered the 2005-2020 period for European NUTS 2 regions and two subgroups: the CEE regions and the Western European regions. Methods: A composite indicator approach was adopted to measure human capital levels in NUTS 2 regions. In order to verify the absolute and conditional b-convergence hypotheses, dynamic panel data models were estimated. The Blundell and Bond system-GMM estimator with parameter standard errors robust to heteroscedasticity was used. Findings & value added: The study positively verified the hypotheses of absolute and conditional convergence in each group of regions. Percentages of employees in sectors proved to be the steady-state determinants. The time needed to reduce differences occurring in human capital levels by half (a half-life) was about 11 times greater for the CEE regions than for the Western European ones. The value added of the article lies in proving the relationship between the sectoral structure of employees and the pace of human capital convergence in European NUTS 2 regions.

The article analyses the relation between the process of media convergence and hybridization of contemporary reportage. The integration of old and new media in a single journalistic report of hybrid character is being analysed here. The author presents this phenomenon using Dzienniki kołymskie by J. Hugo-Bader as an example. It is a work which oscillates between travel diary and travel reportage, it was first published in sections on an Internet press portal. Additionally, the specific character of multimedia journalism and the poetics of digital reportages are commented on in the article.
