The article contains considerations on contemporary everyday life in Silesia. Its main aim is the interpretation of novels written in the late 2010s, for instance Od jednego Lucypera (From the same devil) by Anna Dziewitt-Meller, Pokora by Szczepan Twardoch, Kajś. Opowieść o G.rnym Śląsku (Kajś. A Story of Upper Silesia) by Zbigniew Rokita. Those stories are genologically placed between a family saga, herstory and myth retelling, but the most important purpose for the authors was the recognition of the specific Upper Silesian culture, past and present experiences and visions of the local community.

The aim of this work is to interpret – by means of the postcolonial strategy of reading – a short story titled Mimesis, published in Paweł Huelle’s collection: Opowieści chłodnego morza. This kind of interpretation reveals a choice of new perspectives, aiming at the healing of trauma by explaining the symptoms and revealing hidden facts. In Mimesis by Huelle, this happens due to the character’s narration. The author of the article presents a process of the characters identity creation during their encounters with different cultures (Huelle exemplifies a multicultural mosaic in his short story). All the way through the imagery of the charac-ters, the author of the article enhances the main axiological features and describes the pro-cess of identity creation, thus an act of liberating oneself from restrictions of one’s own culture.

The main aim of the article is the consideration of problems connected with “the prose of rural spaces” (rural spaces’ prose) which is understood as an important theoretical term, used in critical texts in relation to novels, mainly written at the beginning of 21th century. Presented with examples from contemporary Polish literature (the popular and awarded novels written by e.g. Paweł Potoroczyn, Maciej Płaza, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Weronika Gogola) rural spaces’ prose appears to be not entirely precise, but nevertheless a useful category. This category describes the authors’ literary explorations, as well as the methodological efforts of researchers to characterize this new cultural phenomena.

The paper is an attempt to reflect on whether hermeneutics can still be a cognitively fruitful approach in literary studies, especially in respect of contemporary output. The authoress analyses two currents in the literature, which could be named integrating and eristic. They seem to correspond with two paradigms in hermeneutics: affirmative, concentrating on “brightening an existence”, and radical, emphasizing “weakness”, “flux”, “collapsing” etc. A key issue is the doubt whether applying the name “hermeneutics” is not in itself misleading, as it concerns diametrically opposed points of view. The authoress proposes her own understanding of hermeneutics as a perspective of reading literature, which “cling on” to the protagonists’, author’s and interpreter’s experience. She also invokes the metaphors of scaffolding and house building, where the home is marked with an unrelenting “uneasiness” and lacks strong foundations, but does convey the situation of incessant common constructing the accidental and demanding protection of meaning.

The article analyses myths concerning menstruation in Izabela Filipiak’s and Olga Tokarczuk’s creative works. The writers refer to female physiology in order to abolish the taboo on the female body and its excretions and to create mythology free from the male universe. Menstruation is considered a taboo subject even at the beginning of the 21st century and this physiological aspect of feminity is connected with an attempt to respect the differences between the sexes. One can observe not so much an attempt to destroy the rules of patriarchal culture, but a need to recreate the Western imagination, which is able to renew social and symbolic order and create new female mythology, which enables women to identify with their own needs, feelings, physical, sexual and erotic experiences.

The aim of this paper is to describe some of the most distinctive ways of displaying hedonism, gluttony and drunkenness in the Czech literature over the last approximately 15 years. Based on the analysis of the most significant books concerning these themes (e.g. texts by Petr Stančík, Jan Balabán, Emil Hakl, Václav Kahuda, Jáchym Topol and other authors), the author proposes a more detailed typology of the forms of these phenomena in the latest Czech literature, as well as of their specific functions in concrete texts.

The main aim of the article is a consideration the problems connected with this part of contemporary literature which is called “proza środka” (“prose of the middle”). 21st century novels treated as the examples of this phenomenon (e.g. Lubiewo written by Michał Witkowski, Poczwarka by Dorota Terakowska, Kurator by Zbigniew Kruszyński) and their reception prove that new political situation after 1989 changes the rules of common literary perception. The readers expectations support origination of textes which are ambitious, attractive but also easy to assimilation. The main theme of that part of prose is freedom, especially freedom of the indyvidual.

The main aim of the article is an investigating the methods of creation in Szczepan Twardoch’s prose. Interpretation of his novel tittled Drach, published in 2014 as an example of new historical output confirms recognition of New Historism. This text, written by using the pattern of saga, shows specific formulation of local Silesian history during the XX century.
Nadrzędnym celem artykułu jest rozpoznanie metod twórczych konstytutywnych dla prozy Szczepana Twardocha. Interpretacja jego powieści zatytułowanej Drach, a opublikowanej w 2014 roku, jako przykładu dzisiejszego pisarstwa historycznego potwierdza rozpoznania dokonane przez badaczy z nurtu Nowego Historyzmu. Tekst oparty na wzorcu sagi rodzinnej ukazuje w specyficzny sposób lokalną historię Śląska w ciągu XX wieku.

The main purpose of this article is to present the work experience of literary protagonists, who are the representatives of „Tekstylia” generation – people born in the seventies and early eighties, thus the generation, which after years of Polish prosperity in the nineties had to confront brutal capitalist reality at the turn of the XX and XXI century. In my opinion, the work experience of these writers is reflected in plots of their books, where main characters are forced to confront Polish even more brutal capitalist reality at the turn of the XX and XXI century, working as bank assistants, copywriters or tabloid newspaper’s journalists. Corporate enslavement and unfeeling, deprived of empathy managers, constitute main themes of analyzed works, therefore, primarily, I devote my attention to these exact issues.

Artykuł zawiera analizę i interpretację powieści Andrzeja Stasiuka Przewóz, opublikowanej w 2021 roku. Autor stworzył w niej w istocie dwie opowieści: autobiograficzny esej o współczesnym postrzeganiu polskiej rzeczywistości oraz fabułę historyczną osadzoną w roku 1941, na granicznym terytorium nad rzeką Bug. Głównymi problemami podjętymi w utworze okazały się mity zbiorowej świadomości, przeszłość i teraźniejszość wiejskich przestrzeni, krytyczny ogląd potocznych wizji II wojny światowej i Holokaustu, a  także temat granic jako elementów symbolicznie i realnie współtworzących jednostkową egzystencje i tożsamość.
The article interprets the novel Przewóz (2021) written by Andrzej Stasiuk. The author narrates two stories: an autobiographical essay about the contemporary perspective of the Polish reality and a historical plot unfolding in the border territory by the river Bug in 1941. The main themes of the novel include myths of collective consciousness, the past and present of rural spaces, the critique of common opinions concerning  World War 2 and the Holocaust, as well the theme of a border as influencing human life and identity in both, figurative and substantial aspects.

Baroque concepts in contemporary Polish prose One of the most identifiable features of baroque poetics is the concept. It can be understood as a set of tricks or as a stylistic and creative idea that defines the way authors think. Due to its use of paradox, the concept has attracted the interest of contemporary literature created under the auspices of postmodernism. This article attempts to show some solutions of Polish contemporary and recent literature that refers to the tradition of the concept. The operation of the concept takes place both on the external literary level (polymedia genres) and on the internal literary level (narrative figures derived from baroque poetics).

Głównym celem artykułu jest namysł nad prozą powstałą w drugiej dekadzie XXI wieku. Tekst zawiera rozpoznania wyrastające z tradycji geopoetyki i wsparte na wypracowanych w jej ramach kategoriach spacjalnych. Taka perspektywa oglądu utworów najnowszych tematyzujących doświadczanie przestrzeni pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie trzech dużych zbiorów: literatury powracającej do dziejów zasiedlania ziem poniemieckich po II wojnie światowej, renarracji historii Zagłady na polskim terytorium oraz nowych ujęć tematu chłopskiego we współczesnej prozie wiejskich przestrzeni. Książki opublikowane w ostatnich latach (pisane przez autorów różnych pokoleń, są to między innymi: Karolina Kuszyk, Tomasz Różycki, Szczepan Twardoch, Zbigniew Rokita, Tadeusz Słobodzianek, Magdalena Tulli, Mikołaj Łoziński, Marian Pilot, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Anna Janko, Andrzej Stasiuk) pokazują różnorodne przemiany zachodzące w tradycyjnych sposobach wytwarzania polskiej zbiorowej tożsamości.
The main aim of the article are considerations on prose written during the second decade of 21st century. The text contains observations based on spatial cathegories of research. Those perspectives allow to divide literary output connected with topographical experiences into three parts: stories from post-German lands, novels which return to Holocaust history on Polish territories and new versions of rural theme. Books published during last years (written by older and younger authors e.g. Karolina Kuszyk, Tomasz Różycki, Szczepan Twardoch, Zbigniew Rokita, Tadeusz Słobodzianek, Magdalena Tulli, Mikołaj Łoziński, Marian Pilot, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Anna Janko, Andrzej Stasiuk) shows the diverse changes, which occur in traditional ways of creating Polish common identity.

The article presents the issue that is associated with the concept of dialectal stylization, as well as the disparities in the interpretation of the phenomenon, which may be found in the literature of the subject. The author conducts a critical discussion about the views of such researchers of the issue as: S. Dubisz, A. Wilkoń, T. Kostkiewiczowa, T. Skubalanka. As the analytical basis, the author acknowledges the stylization theory of M. R. Mayenowa. Not every implementation of the dialectal items to the texts indicates a stylization. The dialectal stylization is realized mainly in the texts of an artistic style, but in the literary works the dialectal units may also be citations or elements of reality of a represented world that function on the basis of a given theme. The author of the article discusses and illustrates the issue of the boundary between the prolific use of a dialectal style with the intention of stylization and the non-stylized use. Furthermore, he discusses the status of the texts that are written in a dialect and the phenomena of hybrid and double-coded texts. The empirical material of the article constitutes the prose works of the youngest generation of the Polish authors, which were published in the last few years. Those involve the novels written by: Maciej Płaza, Ignacy Karpowicz, Wojciech Kuczok, Szczepan Twardoch.
Artykuł przedstawia problemy związane z pojęciem „stylizacji gwarowej” i rozbieżnościami w interpretacji zjawiska, jakie odnajdujemy w literaturze przedmiotu. Autor dokonuje krytycznego omówienia poglądów takich badaczy problematyki, jak S. Dubisz, A. Wilkoń, T. Kostkiewiczowa, T. Skubalanka. Za podstawę analityczną przyjmuje teorię stylizacji M.R. Mayenowej. Nie każde wprowadzenie do tekstu elementów gwary oznacza stylizację. Stylizacja gwarowa realizuje się przede wszystkim w tekstach stylu artystycznego, ale w utworach literackich jednostki gwarowe mogą być też cytatami bądź elementami realiów świata przedstawionego funkcjonującymi na zasadzie motywu. Autor artykułu omawia i ilustruje problem granicy pomiędzy stylotwórczym użyciem gwary z intencją stylizacyjną a użyciem niestylizacyjnym. Omawia status tekstów pisanych gwarą oraz zjawiska tekstów hybrydowych i dwukodowych. Materiał empiryczny artykułu stanowią utwory prozatorskie najmłodszej generacji polskich twórców opublikowane w ostatnich kilku latach, są to powieści Macieja Płazy, Ignacego Karpowicza, Wojciecha Kuczoka, Szczepana Twardocha.

The essay presents an overview of the most important and most interesting prose and poetry publications that appeared on the Polish publishing market in 2019. The past year belonged mainly to artists perfectly rooted in the readers’ awareness. Particularly appreciated were especially works with underlying autobiographical themes, revisiting the often difficult past to try to sort out the “here and now”, socially engaged books, and books that remind us about shortcomings of the communication code. The paper remarks on the role of literary names in contemporary Polish prose. The author notices that in the works under analysis aside to the proper nomine propria, we find a numerous group of quasi-names or individual descriptions. The essential result of the analysis is the perception that the hierarchy of the function of these names is different, and the rank of intertextual and metatextual function is especially significant.
