Surface acoustic wave (SAW) properties of a crystal depend on the density, elastic, piezoelectric and dielectric constants.On the basis of literature data, calculations of SAW parameters in a neodymium calcium oxoborate [NdCa4O(BO3)3] crystal were carried out to evaluate orientations optimal for the correction of elastic and piezoelectric constants. SAW velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients were measured using SAW delay lines deposited on differently oriented crystal substrates. Dielectric constants were determined from measured effective permittivities. Both a nonlinear least squares algorithm and a computer program for the correction of elastic and piezoelectric constants from measured SAW velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients were developed. The correction of NdCa4O(BO3)3 elastic and piezoelectric constants was carried out. It was shown that for the corrected constants the differences between the measured and calculated SAW parameters are marginal.
Własności akustycznych fal powierzchniowych (AFP) w rysztale zależą od gęstości stałych elastycznych, piezoelektrycznych i dielektrycznych. Na podstawie danych z literatury obliczono parametry AFP w krysztale tlenoboranu neodymowo wapniowego [NdCa4O(BO3)3] w celu wyznaczenia orientacji optymalnych do korekcji stałych. Zmierzono prędkości i współczynniki sprzężenia elektromechanicznego AFP z wykorzystaniem linii opóźniających osadzonych na podłożach NdCa4O(BO3)3 o różnych orientacjach. Wyznaczono stałe dielektryczne z pomiaru przenikalności elektrycznych. Opracowano metodę korekcji stałych elastycznych i piezoelektrycznych wykorzystującą nieliniowy algorytm najmniejszych kwadratów i zmierzone parametry AFP. Przeprowadzono korekcję stałych elastycznych i piezoelektrycznych kryształu NdCa4O(BO3)3. Wykazano, że dla stałych skorygowanych różnice między zmierzonymi, a obliczonymi parametrami AFP są bardzo małe.

In this study, a finite strain formulation of elasto-plasticity without the yield surface is analyzed. It is found that the presented model allows for a good description of the elasto-plastic response for many metallic materials. Furthermore, it is noted that the model involving a limited number of material parameters is able to capture such effects as indefinite elastic limit, strain hardening, strain softening and the Bauschinger effect. An algorithm for the evaluation of constants is described and the determined values are given for NC high carbon tool steel, copper, brass, Inconel alloy, tungsten heavy alloy and aluminum.

Homogenization is the transition from the level of microscopic heterogeneity to a homogeneous macroscopic level. The analysis of the value of equivalent parameters and their variability requires prior determination of the influence of microstructure on the values of these parameters [15]. Wood is a composite material and has a layered structure in the form of alternate layers of soft and hard wood. One of the main issues was the determination of constants materials of individual layers of natural wood and modified and then equivalent material constants of natural and modified wood. The material constants of single layers and the material constants of composite were determined on the basis of experimental studies. For this purpose, a homogenization method has been used to determine equivalent material constants on the basis of material constants of single layers of soft and hard wood [1, 2, 14]. A representative cell consisting of a softwood and hardwood layer has been isolated from the sample-measuring portion. On the basis of this cell have been developed mathematical model of equivalent material constants. A sample consisting of two layers was subjected to an even stretch in the direction of the axes x1, x2, x3. The equivalent material constants have been defined by using equilibrium conditions, geometric conditions, and Hooke’s generalized law. Each wood component on the micro-level is homogeneous, continuous with its constitutive equation, conservation laws, and boundary conditions at the boundary of the separation of components. The equivalent material constants of natural and modified wood have been determined using the homogenization method [12, 13]. The results obtained from the research and the results obtained from the calculations are very similar.

The half-metallic, mechanical, and transport properties of the quaternary Heusler compound of PdZrTiAl is discussed under hydrostatic pressures in the range of –11.4 GPa to 18.4 GPa in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann quasi-classical theory using the generalization gradient approximation (GGA). By applying the stress, the band gap in the minor spin increases so that the lowest band is obtained 0.25 eV at the pressure of –11.4 GPa while the maximum gap is calculated 0.9 eV at the pressure of 18.4 GPa. In all positive and negative pressures, the PdZrTiAl composition exhibits a half-metallic behavior 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level. It is also found that applying stress increases the Seebeck coefficient in both spin directions. In the minority spin, the n-type PdZrTiAl, the power factor (PF) for all the cases is greater in the equilibrium state than the strain and stress conditions whereas in the majority spin, the PF value of the stress state is greater than the other two. The non-dimensional figure of merit (ZT) is significant and is about one in spin down in the room temperature for the all pressure states that it remains on this value by applying pressure. The obtained elastic constants indicate that the PdZrTiAl crystalline structure has a mechanical stability. Based on the Yong (E), Bulk (B) and shear (G) modulus and Poisson (n) ratio, the brittle-ductile behavior of this compound has been investigated under pressure. The results indicate that PdZrTiAl has a ductile nature and it is a stiffness compound in which elastic and mechanical instability increases by applying strain.

In the present work, we investigated the ability of electrophoresis to determine the stability constant of the complex formed between lactate ions (a simple model of natural organic matter), and lanthanum (III) and europium (III), two model metal cations of actinides. The effect of lactate on lanthanide’s effective mobility is studied, and conditional metal ion-ligand interaction constants are determined on the basis of the variation in the effective mobilities (log βn = 2.23 for lanthanum (III) and 2.39 for europium (III), at 25°C and I=0.015 M). The originality of this contribution lies in the fact that we have chosen to detect the metal ion instead of the ligand by an indirect UV-visible detection and using a chromophoric compound (creatinine).

In this paper, a multi-spring model is used for modelling of the crack in a micro/nanobeam under axial compressive load based on a modified couple stress theory. This model includes an equivalent rotational spring to transmit the bending moment and an equivalent longitudinal spring to transmit the axial force through the cracked section, which leads to promotion of the modelling of discontinuities due to the presence of the crack. Moreover, this study considers coupled effects between the bending moment and axial force on the discontinuities at the cracked section. Therefore, four flexibility constants appear in the continuity conditions. In this paper, these four constants are obtained as a function of crack depth, separately. This modelling is employed to solve the buckling problem of cracked micro/nanobeams using a close-form method, Euler-Bernoulli theory and simply supported boundary conditions. Finally, the effects of flexibility constants, crack depth and crack location on the critical buckling load are studied.

Zastosowano metodę mikroekstrakcji do fazy stacjonarnej z fazy nadpowierzchniowej do wyznaczania stałych Henry'ego tetrachloroetenu i trichloroetenu w roztworach wodnych. Otrzymane wyniki w postaci stałych Henry'ego porównano z danymi literaturowymi. Zaproponowaną metodę wyznaczania stałej Henry'ego można zastosować do innych lotnych związków organicznych.
Head-space solid phase microextraction method was applied for determination of Henry's law constants of trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene in water solutions. The values of Henry's law constants were compared with literature data. This method can be applied for determination of Henry's law constants of other volatile organic compouds

We report on the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on GaAs1-x-Nx layers, grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), using room temperature spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). A comparative study was carried out on a set of GaAs1-x-Nx as-grown and the RTA samples with small nitrogen content (x = 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.5%). Thanks to the standard critical point model parameterization of the GaAs1-x-Nx extracted dielectric functions, we have determined the RTA effect, and its nitrogen dependence. We have found that RTA affects more samples with high nitrogen content. In addition, RTA is found to decrease the E1 energy nitrogen blueshift and increase the broadening parameters of E1, E1+?1, E'0 and E2 critical points.

The element is powered by a step-function current and simultaneously temperature is measured by a fast single-detector IR head. Cost estimating techniques are approaches towards delivering reliable estimates for any projects or endeavour. However, the usage of the different estimating techniques available depends on prevailing circumstances revolving around such project while the reliability and accuracy of each of the estimating techniques quite differ from each other. This study had through literature review identified six (6) electrical cost estimating methods and through a structured questionnaire assessed the causal factors influencing the usage of the six estimating methods. Data were retrieved from 80 respondents and analysed. The results of the study indicate the most critical causal factors as incomplete details in electrical working drawings, the absence of electrical design drawings and unclear/ambiguous electrical specifications. The study also proffered probable solutions to five of the most critical causal factors. In addition, site-observed productivity constants of electrical technicians at three different residential project sites were obtained which will serve as a valuable cost tool for estimators when carrying out electrical cost estimating jobs. The findings of the research have considerable implications for the education, training and practice of estimators in the construction industry.

In the humanities and social sciences, the concept of the Anthropocene has become the starting point for theoretical analyses of the immediate relationship between the environmental preconditions for the existence of civilization and the human actions whose consequences threaten these preconditions. From the philosophical-anthropological point of view, reflections on the concepts of the Anthropocene focus not only on a critical analysis of the claims about human that originate in the natural sciences but also on an understanding of the overall role of humanity in the new geological-climatic regime of the Earth. The primary purpose of this paper is to highlight two-pronged problem areas, which include both the problem of anthropological constants as specific ways of makingstatements about humans and the problem of using them to reflect on the conceptual system of the Anthropocene. In particular, this paper emphasizes hypotheses and claims from the Anthropocene concept of Earth System Science that point to humans becoming a geobiophysical force in the Anthropocene. Three areas in which anthropological constants could be subsequently subjected to a deeper analysis are proposed.
