Polish Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate belonged initially to the religious  provinces of their Congregation in Germany and Canada. Since the end of the 19th century they were involved greatly with the ministry to the Polish immigrants. After 1918 they pursued a project of   founding a separate Polish province. Their first most important communities in Poland were organized with the support of the archbishops of Poznań and Gniezno and of civil authorities in Poznań. The reasons for choosing this area included its traditional patriotism and closeness to Silesia, which was the source of many early Oblate Polish vocations. The article depicts all the most important stages of Oblate foundations in the archdiocese of Poznań, which included among others the provincial house and two major seminaries.

The article aims at finding successful methods of communication between the Catholic Church and modern man. It points out that methods used in advertising and marketing could and should be used for this purpose. It provides us with basic information concerning brands, communication and strategies. Finally, the article describes how religious congregations could successfully communicate their mission.

Władze komunistyczne Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej dążyły do laicyzacji systemu oświaty i wychowania, począwszy od najniższego poziomu edukacyjnego, jakim były przedszkola. W ramach antykościelnej i antyzakonnej polityki wyznaniowej państwa, placówki wychowania przedszkolnego prowadzone przez żeńskie zgromadzenia zakonne poddane zostały procesowi stopniowej likwidacji w pierwszych dwóch powojennych dekadach. Ograniczanie niezależnych od panującej ideologii podmiotów, biorących dotąd udział w tworzeniu sieci placówek wychowania przedszkolnego, skutkowało w warunkach niedemokratycznego, totalitarnego systemu politycznego, narzuceniem monopolu państwa na organizowanie, prowadzenie i nadzór nad placówkami wychowania przedszkolnego, co sprzyjać miało skuteczniejszej indoktrynacji wychowanków. Jednym z instrumentów realizacji wytyczonego celu stało się prawo oświatowe. Choć do 1961 r. oficjalnie obowiązywały przedwojenne ustawy oświatowe z 1932 r., w praktyce już w latach czterdziestych rozpoczęło się eliminowanie zgromadzeń zakonnych z obszaru wychowania dziecka w wieku przedszkolnym. Zjawiska tego nie powstrzymały protesty przełożonych zakonnych i hierarchii Kościoła, powołujące się na ratyfikowaną przez rząd PRL międzynarodową konwencję w sprawie zwalczania dyskryminacji w dziedzinie oświaty, w myśl której, oprócz państwowych przedszkoli działać mogły również „inne”, niepaństwowe placówki oświatowo-wychowawcze. Pomimo braku przeszkód prawnych, zgromadzenia zakonne nie mogły reaktywować działalności w zakresie prowadzenia placówek wychowania przedszkolnego.
Polish communist authorities of the People's Republic sought to secularization of education system, starting from the lowest level of education, namely kindergartens. As part of the anti-Church state religious policy, kindergartens run by female religious congregations were gradually eliminated in the first two postwar decades. Restricting independent of the ruling ideology entities that had been contributing up to that moment to preschool education institutions, resulted, in an undemocratic, totalitarian political system, in the monopoly of the state on organizing, conducting and supervising the institutions of preschool education, which would encourage more effective indoctrination of pupils. The education law became one of the instruments to implement the objective. Although until 1961 a pre-war educational Act of 1932 officially was still in force, in practice since the forties the state began to move religious congregations away from responsibility of raising a child of a preschool age. This phenomenon was not stopped by protests of superiors from religious congregation and hierarchy of the Church who claimed that the Polish government ratified international convention against discrimination in education, according to which, apart from state-run kindergartens there could also be “other” non-state educational institutions. Despite the absence of legal obstacles, religious congregations could not revive the business of conducting pre-school education.

Opis:
The development of hospital services in the Polish State was associated with baptism, the development of Christianity and church organization, and above all, the arrival of religious orders. In the Middle Ages, male religious orders played a huge role in charitable activities, while in modern times female congregations dealing with charity and hospital services were of great importance in that regard. As for female religious orders in the Middle Ages, the Benedictine and Cistercian nuns were the first ones who were engaged in running hospitals and charity work, although it was not their primary mission and charisma. Sometimes hospitals were also run by the Poor Clare Sisters of the Second Franciscan Order, the Magdalene Sisters, the Bridgettine Sisters, and primarily by the Beguines, loose groups of women who were close mostly to Dominican and Franciscan churches and the rules of community life, that is the Third Order. The most important congregation, however, turned out to be the Sisters Canonesses of the Holy Spirit (duchaczki in Polish), who from the beginning of the thirteenth century run, along  with the male branch of the Order, Holy Spirit hospital in Cracow, which specialized in the care of abandoned children and was the largest and the most important one in Poland until the Enlightenment. The great development of charitable female religious congregations occurred after the Council of Trent (1545-1563). Undoubtedly, the most significant of which were the Sisters of Charity (so-called szarytki in Polish) founded by St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1633. In Poland, they had 29 houses, where they ran hospitals, orphanages and schools for girls, including the poor. Similar activities, although at a smaller scale, were done by the Sisters of St. Catherine from Braniewo, founded in 1571 by Regina Protman. In addition, charitable activities were undertaken by the Congregation of the Virgins of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (founded in Cracow in the 1620s by Zofia Czeska), the Visitation Sisters (founded by St. Francis de Sales -1601, Geneva,) and the Mariavites founded in 1737 by Stefan Turczynowicz in Vilnius. Apart from the above mentioned orders, the work of mercy was developed, on the margins of its core mission, by most non-charitable female religious congregations existing in Poland in the period before the partitions.

Opis:
From the 16th to 18th centuries in Western Europe care and nursing institutions for the sick were created by the faithful of the Catholic Church. The greatest successes in that field were achieved by three persons: Juan de Dios, Camillo de Lellis and Vincent de Paul. They established charity, care and nursing congregations, orders and convents which conducted wide charity activities in Europe before the French Revolution.
W Europie Zachodniej w okresie od XVI do XVIII wieku instytucje opiekuńczo-pielęgnacyjne dla ludzi chorych tworzone były przez wiernych Kościoła katolickiego. Największe osiągnięcia w tej dziedzinie stały się udziałem trzech osób: Juana de Dios, Camillo deLellis oraz Vincenta de Paul. Oni utworzyli zgromadzenia i zakony charytatywne i opiekuńczo-pielęgnacyjne, które w Europie przed Rewolucją Francuską prowadziły szeroko rozgałęzioną akcję dobroczynności.

Instytut Melanezyjski jest jednostką naukową, której celem są studia teologiczne, kulturowe, społeczne i gospodarcze, mające służyć kościołom i społecznościom Melanezji. Instytut powstał na fali ducha odnowy po Soborze Watykańskim II. Antropolog kulturowy Ernest Brandewie oraz Gerald Bus włączyli się w podobną inicjatywę w Papui Nowej Gwinei. Instytut w roku 1969 powołało do życia Stowarzyszenie Przełożonych Religijnych Papui Nowej Gwinei i Wysp Salomona. Zgodnie z wizją fundatorów Instytut powinien wypełniać następujące cele: 1) prowadzić adekwatne badania antropologiczne i socjogospodarcze; 2) organizować kursy wprowadzające dla misjonarzy; 3) publikować „Melanezyjskie Zeszyty Społeczno-Duszpasterskie”; 4) pomagać we wdrażaniu schematów i eksperymentów dotyczących rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego. W roku 1974 Instytut przekształcił się z jednostki międzyzakonnej, której członkowie wywodzili się z różnorodnych katolickich kongregacji misyjnych – w ośrodek ekumeniczny, którym kierują cztery największe kościoły Melanezji. W czasie ponad czterdziestu lat działalności przyczynił się do studiów socjologicznych, kulturowych i duszpasterskich nie tylko w zakresie socjologicznej, kulturowej i duszpasterskiej formacji księży, ale także do formacji wszystkich wychowawców i przywódców Melanezji.
The Melanesian Institute (MI) is a scientific institute aimed at theological, cultural, social and economic studies at the service of the churches and the society in Melanesia. The MI was born out of the renewal spirit of the Second Vatican Council. The cultural anthropologist Ernest Brandewie and Gerald Bus joined in proposing such an initiative for Papua New Guinea. The MI was founded in 1969 by an Association of Religious Superiors of Papua New Guinea and Salomon Islands. According to the vision of its founders, the MI should accomplish the following goals: 1) to carry out relevant anthropological and socioeconomic research; 2) to organise orientation courses for missionaries; 3) to publish “Melanesian Social Pastoral Papers”; 4) to help implement socio-economic development schemes and experiments. The MI developed in 1974, from an inter-congregational institute staffed by members of various Catholic missionary congregations – to an ecumenical institute under the guidance of the four major churches in Melanesia. In over four decades it contributed with its social, cultural and pastoral studies not only to the social, cultural and pastoral formation of church ministers, but to that of all educators and leaders in Melanesia as well.

Od roku 1776 bol kláštor benediktínov v Komárne domom Maďarskej kongregácie benediktínov (založenej v roku 1514). Po vytvorení Slovanskej benediktínskej kongregácie v roku 1945 sa dekrétom Rehoľnej kongregácie vo Vatikáne v septembri 1947 stal sui iuris a Domom slovanskej benediktínskej kongregácie sv. Vojtecha a svätej Margity (Uhorskej) (OSB). V tomto prehľade nachádzame vysvetlenie významu slova kongregácia v benediktínskej interpretácii, kongregácie v dejinách benediktínov a v dejinách strednej a východnej Európy. Potom autor opisuje krátke dejiny Slovanskej kongregácie so zvláštnym zreteľom na jej rozpustenie počas komunizmu a nové založenie po Annus Mirabilis v roku 1989, ponúka niektoré štatistické údaje kláštorov združených v tejto Kongregácii v roku 1925 a v roku 2015. V tabuľkách je uvedený zoznam benediktínskych kongregácií podľa pápežského schválenia až do roku 1959.
Since 1776, the Benedictine Convent of Komárno was a House of the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation (established in 1514). After the creation of the Slavonic Benedictine Congregation in 1945, the Convent became sui iuris with decree of the Congregation for Religious in the Vatican in September 1947, and a House of the Slavonic Benedictine Congregation of Saint Adalbert and Saint Margaret (OSB). In this overview we find the introduction of the meaning of the word Congregation in the Benedictine interpretation, the Congregations in Benedictine History and in the History of East-Central Europe. Then the Author describes the short history of the Slavonic one, with special regard to the dispersion during Communism, and the refoundation after the Annus Mirabilis in 1989, he offers some statistical data of the Monasteries united in this Congregation in 1925 and in 2015. In the Tables a list of the Benedictine Congregations is offered according to the Pontifical approval until 1959.

As the Second World War ended, Jews that survived the Holocaust tried to resurrect Jewish life in Poland, which, at least to some extent, was supposed to resemble the one from before 1939. They aimed to revive Judaism and follow religious teachings in everyday life. The article shows one form of the Jewish life renewal, ie religious education. Religious schools and courses were created primarily so that children, who spent the wartime away from vital tenets of Judaism and traditions of the Jewish people, could grasp what it means to be a religious Jew. The text provides geographical locations of educational establishments active between 1944 and 1950 and details about their functioning.

Żydzi ocaleli po okupacji nazistowskiej rozpoczęli po wojnie odbudowę swojego życia narodowego. Stworzyli również podstawy życia religijnego. Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie działalności oświatowo-wychowawczej Żydowskich Kongregacji Wyznaniowych. Prowadziły one szkoły Talmud-Tora i jesziwy. W sierpniu 1949 roku kongregacje połączyły się w Związek Religijny Wyznania Mojżeszowego.
Jews survived the Nazi occupation started the reconstruction of the Jewish community after the war and also the bases for the religious life were constructed. The main aim of the article is to present educational activieties of the Jewish Religious Congregations. They maintained Talmud-Thoras and Yeshivas. The Jewish religious congregations amalgamated at their convention of August, 1949, into the Religious Alliance of Jews in Poland.

Opis:
In the territory of the diocese of Łódź, which was established in 1920, both newly and previously formed monastic congregations undertook their activities. There were also some unprecedented appearances like those of third orders existing temporarily (Dolorist Brothers, Albertine Brothers, Sacred Heart Brothers) and permanently (Brothers of Mercy, Christian Brothers). As far as the traditional ‘’first’’ orders and monastic congregations existing in the Old Polish period, the first ones that appeared in the 20th century in the diocese of Łódź were Vincentians who came to Pabianice in 1919. In turn, after the Second World War Carmelites of the Ancient Observance and Oratorians settled in Łódź and Tomaszów Mazowiecki respectively. What is more, during the interwar period 3 centres were founded by Salesians: a didactic centre in Łódź, a priesthood centre in Łódź and a care centre in Lutomiersk. The remaining monastic congregations are in charge of one parish both in Łódź and in the territory of the archdiocese: Oblates (Grotniki), Passionists, Claretians, Dehonians (Bełchatów) and Pallottines. Dominicans arrived as the last ones, moving into a 3-storey tenement house in Łódź in 2004. Monks conduct their activities in various social environments and attempt to fulfil their mission in the local Church.
Na terytorium powstałej w 1920 roku diecezji łódzkiej podejmowały pracę zarówno nowe zgromadzenia zakonne, jak i zakony o starej metryce powstania. Pewną nowość stanowią zakony laickie działające okresowo: bracia doloryści, albertyni, Bracia Serca Jezusowego oraz posługujący ciągle: bonifratrzy i bracia szkolni. Z zakonów kleryckich i zgromadzeń zakonnych działających w czasach staropolskich jako pierwsi w 1919 roku przybyli do Pabianic Misjonarze św. Wincentego à Paulo. Po II wojnie światowej osiedlili się karmelici trzewiczkowi w Łodzi i filipini w Tomaszowie Mazowieckim. W okresie międzywojennym salezjanie zorganizowali trzy placówki: szkolno-wychowawczą w Łodzi, duszpasterską w Łodzi i opiekuńczą w Lutomiersku. Pozostałe zgromadzenia zakonne mają po jednej parafii w Łodzi i na terenie archidiecezji: oblaci (Grotniki), pasjoniści, klaretyni, sercanie (Bełchatów) i pallotyni. Jako ostatni w 2004 roku w trzypiętrowej kamienicy w Łodzi zamieszkali dominikanie. Duszpasterze zakonni swoją działalnością obejmują różne środowiska społeczne i usiłują realizować swoje posłannictwo w Kościele lokalnym.

W historię Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego i w jego misję od samego początku była wpisana obecność sióstr zakonnych, które tworząc środowisko akademickie, były: studentkami, nauczycielami akademickimi, pracownikami naukowymi, bibliotekarkami, pracownikami administracji różnych agend uniwersytetu, między innymi: rektoratu, domu księży studentów, żeńskiego domu akademickiego, a także Towarzystwa Naukowego KUL oraz Towarzystwa Przyjaciół KUL. Władze PRL od początku lat 50. zamknęły siostrom zakonnym możliwość kształcenia się w szkołach państwowych. Dotyczyło to zarówno szkół średnich, jak i wyższych. Z tego względu przez długie lata Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski obok Akademii Teologii Katolickiej był jedyną wyższą uczelnią, gdzie zakonnice mogły studiować. Obecność sióstr zakonnych na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim miała swoje przełożenie na kształtowanie się elity zakonnej, gdyż wiele sióstr absolwentek KUL-u podejmowało obowiązki przełożonych generalnych i prowincjalnych. Uniwersytet ten był dla żeńskich wspólnot zakonnych ważnym ośrodkiem naukowym, gdzie zakonnice mogły zdobywać wykształcenie i uzyskiwać stopnie i tytuły naukowe. Zakonnice na stałe wpisały się w historię społeczności akademickiej KUL-u, który z kolei kształtował historię życia nie tylko swoich absolwentek w habitach, ale także całych wspólnot zakonnych.
The presence of nuns in the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) and its mission was written into its history since the very beginning, who while creating academic environment were students, academic teachers, research workers, librarians as well as university administration employees and its various agendas, including the rector’s office, priests’ dormitory, female dormitory as well as the Scientific Society of KUL and Society of KUL Friends. Since the beginning of the 1950s, authorities of the Polish People’s Republic prevented the nuns’ possibility to study in state schools, and this concerned both secondary schools and colleges. For this reason, the Catholic University of Lublin, apart from the Academy of Catholic Theology, for many years became the only institution of higher education where nuns could study. The presence of nuns at the Catholic University of Lublin translated into a formation of the conventual elite, since many nuns who graduated from KUL assumed the duties of general and provincial superiors. The Catholic University of Lublin was an important scientific centre for sisterhood communities, where nuns not only could acquire education but also academic degrees and titles. The nuns have become the history and academic community of KUL for good, shaping the history of life not only of its graduates in habits, but also of entire religious communities.

W okresie reżimu komunistycznego w Polsce we wszystkich praktycznie obszarach życia istniały dwie postawy społeczne: przystosowanie i opór. Zewnętrznym przejawom przystosowania, towarzyszyło zachowanie suwerenności wewnętrznej i zdolności do stawiania oporu, przynajmniej wobec niektórych cech systemu czy kierunku działania władz. Antykomunistyczny opór dotyczył wszystkich warstw i grup społecznych. Podejmowany był nie tylko przez zbrojne podziemie ale także przez znaczną część polskiego społeczeństwa. Był ukierunkowany przede wszystkim na kwestie wolności wyznawania religii, naruszania wartości tradycji narodowej, czy wobec ograniczania wolności przekonań i wypowiedzi. Walka z zakonami należała do głównych celów większości reżimów, które kiedykolwiek walczyły z Kościołem. Katolicy byli traktowani jako obywatele drugiej kategorii, zakonnice natomiast jak obywatele trzeciej kategorii, nieustannie spychane na margines życia społecznego, pozbawiane nie tylko możliwości awansu społecznego, ale przede wszystkim podstawowych praw i swobód obywatelskich gwarantowanych przez Konstytucję. Systematycznie pozbawiano siostry prowadzenia działalności apostolskiej i swobodnego podejmowania pracy zawodowej, odmawiano możliwości zdobycia wykształcenia, korzystania z świadczeń socjalnych takich jak ochrona zdrowia, ubezpieczenia społeczne czy świadczenia emerytalne, instrumentalnie wykorzystywano przepisy podatkowe. Planowa ateizacja dotknęła wszystkie obszary działalności wspólnot zakonnych. Przyjmowała ona charakter rozwiązań instytucjonalno-prawnych. Walka z działalnością zakonów dokonywana była „w majestacie prawa”. W okresie od 1949 do 1967 zlikwidowano ponad 80 szkół zakonnych, 263 domy dziecka, 680 przedszkoli, 73 świetlice, 46 żłobków. Z 276 szpitali, w których siostry pracowały do roku 1967 zostały tylko w 93. Szpitale zakonne upaństwowiono. W celu skutecznej obrony zakonów, z inicjatywy Prymasa Wyszyńskiego zapoczątkowano instytucjonalne formy współpracy zgromadzeń zakonnych. Narzędziem represyjnej polityki państwa, prowadzonej w stosunku do zgromadzeń zakonnych była Ustawa o przejęciu „dóbr martwej ręki” z 20 marca 1950 r. mająca na celu ograniczenie bazy materialnej zakonów, wprowadziła stan prawny, w którym zgromadzenia zakonne traciły własne ziemie i gospodarstwa, będące podstawą utrzymania wielu wspólnot zakonnych, a zwłaszcza nowicjatów i domów formacyjnych. Afirmacja, przystosowanie, opór, opozycyjność – wszystkie te postawy występowały jednocześnie i we wzajemnym powiązaniu. Zakonnice, tak jak całe społeczeństwo, zmuszone do milczenia i respektowania narzuconych reguł, przystosowały się do nich, jednocześnie broniły pewnego zakresu autonomii i próbowały ją poszerzać. Dzieje PRL można przedstawić jako proces zmagania się między aparatem władzy a społeczeństwem, w którym to zmaganiu zmieniają się obie strony.
From 1944 when Poland was under the communism rule two kind of attitudes existed in polish society – adaptation and resistance. Affirmation, adjustment, resistance and opposition – those attitudes were appearing at the same time and were related to each other. Anti-communist resistance in People’s Republic of Poland applied to every class and group of society. The resistance was especially directed into a restrict feature limiting a freedom to profess religion, damaging a value of national tradition or limiting a freedom to speech and beliefs. In August 1949 “ A decree of protection of freedom of conscience and denomination” was issued. Technically this document, was meant to create a lawful guarantee of freedom of denominations in Poland. In reality some of the regulations were used by the different authorities to both make Church’s life more difficult and to repress clergy and secular people. The Catholics in Poland were treated as a second category citizens ( limited with their capability to get promotion, even if they kept a loyal attitudes) but nuns were treated even worst as a third category citizens, being continuously pushing to the dregs of social live, without not only any chance to get promotion but also without the fundamental rights and freedom guarantee to every Poles by the Constitution. In further perspective the communist government planned to gradually limited congregations work, created closed enclaves and aimed to completely liquidate nuns work. The right person for the Church happened to be a cardinal Stefan Wyszyński a Primate of Poland. Thanks to an inflexible attitudes of cardinal Wyszyński and his Non possumus the authorities were unable to fulfill the program of “loyality” in Catholic Church in Poland. The Primate tried to show nuns a new perspective of work and was looking for methods to defend and kept monastic life in Poland. The Episcopal was protecting monastic live. It was aware that battle with religious orders was a part of a main repertoire among most of the regime which at any time undertake a battle with Church. The history of People’s Republic of Poland might be describe as a process of struggle between the authorities and society where both sides were changing under influence of this struggle.

W 1882 roku w Warszawie założone zostało, jako jedno ze zgromadzeń ukrytych powstałych z inicjatywy o. Honorata Koźmińskiego, Zgromadzenie Sióstr Franciszkanek od Cierpiących. Zajmować się miało szeroko rozumianą opieką nad cierpiącymi i potrzebującymi. Od początku istnienia Zgromadzeniem kierowała Kazimiera Gruszczyńska, jego założycielka. Zdając sobie sprawę z ogromnych potrzeb w zakresie opieki nad chorymi zarówno w szpitalach i innych zakładach leczniczych, jak i w domach prywatnych posługę tę traktowała, jako jeden z ważniejszych obowiązków sióstr. Przełożona dbała, aby siostry kształciły się w zakresie pielęgniarstwa już od chwili wstąpienia do zakonu. Sama opracowywała dokumenty i instrukcje pomocne w pracy z chorymi, kierowała siostry na kursy i szkolenia, niestrudzenie nadzorowała ich pracę z pacjentami. Doprowadziła do wybudowania w Warszawie szpitala, tak zwanego „Sanatorium”, jednego z najnowocześniejszych w tamtym czasie, służącego także, jako miejsce praktycznego szkolenia franciszkanek. W planach Kazimiery Gruszczyńskiej było również założenie szkoły pielęgniarskiej, jednak w związku z wielorakimi trudnościami musiała zrezygnować z tego zamiaru. Warto podkreślić, że działania Matki Przełożonej mające na celu jak najlepsze przygotowanie sióstr do pracy z chorymi były, jak na owe czasy, nowatorskie dla zawodowego kształcenia pielęgniarek. Sama nie mając przygotowania medycznego doskonale rozumiała potrzeby i wymagania w tym zakresie. Równocześnie zabiegała o to, by przygotowanie fachowe było mocno powiązane z autentyczną religijnością sióstr. Zgromadzenie Sióstr Franciszkanek od Cierpiących odwołujące się do duchowości franciszkańskiej, wywodzi z niej podstawowy dla siebie apostolat posługi cierpiącym, prezentowany wielokrotnie w Konstytucjach i innych dokumentach, a także w pismach i działaniach K. Gruszczyńskiej.
In 1882, the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Suffering was founded in Warsaw as one of the hidden life congregations formed on the initiative of Fr. Honorat Koźmiński. The aim of the congregation was to take care of the suffering and the needy. From the beginning of its existence, the Congregation was managed by Kazimiera Gruszczyńska, its founder. Realizing the great needs in the care of the sick, both in hospitals and other establishments, as well as in private homes, she treated this service as one of the most important duties of the sisters. The superior took care that the sisters were educated in nursing from the moment they joined the convent. She herself developed documents and instructions to help the work with the sick, directed the sisters to courses and trainings, and supervised their work with patients. She led to the construction of a hospital in Warsaw, the so-called "Sanatorium", one of the most modern at that time, also serving as a place for practical training for Franciscan Sisters. In Kazimiera Gruszczyńska's plans there was also the establishment of a nursing school, but due to multiple difficulties, she had to give up this intention. It is worth noting that the Mother Superior's actions aimed at preparing the sisters for the best possible work with the sick were, for those times, innovative for the vocational training of nurses. Not having medical training herself, she understood the needs and requirements in this area perfectly well. At the same time, she took care that the professional preparation should be strongly linked to the authentic religiousness of the sisters. The Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Suffering, based on Franciscan spirituality, derives from it the basic apostolate of serving the suffering, presented many times in the Constitutions and other documents, as well as in the writings and activities of K. Gruszczyńska.

The article explores soldiers’ participation in process of creating and accepting ordinan- ces and articles of war. It was possible because of existance in army Sejmików – distinct for rittmeisters (Rittmeisters Council) and for the companions from one unit (Banner Council). In the beginning only rittmeisters had an influence over forming the articles of war. From the XVII century also companions could present their will. The acceptance of the officers was necessary to put legal rules into practice. From the nineties of the XVI century we can observe, that commander in chief (Hetman), Jan Zamoyski resigns from knights’ participation and tries, with the help of his own authority and Sejm’ enablement, to create legal rules by his own, without soldiers’ participation. Councils had a much greater authorisation in confederated units, that played a major role in legislation process.

This article explores the renewal lay people initiated at a decisive moment in Church history. In the 16th – 17th century, with the development of the modern school, lay people were given the responsibility to teach religion and to guarantee Christian education in schools. A new type of religious congregation, with exclusively lay members, emerged. They had an impressive impact, worldwide, over the past three centuries. However, as the members of these congregations declined dramatically over the past decades, one wonders whether new generations will succeed in guaranteeing continuity in the near future. Or will ordinary, secular but baptized lay people create new forms of association while taking on responsibility for school education?Michel Sauvage (1923-2001), a French member of the De La Salle religious order, studied the theological identity of the lay “teaching brother” as initiated by J.-B. De La Salle at the end of the 17th century. The present situation, with 1.9 % brothers left and 97.6 % ordinary lay teachers in the educational institutions worldwide, seems to suggest that, once more, a historical mutation is occurring in the church.
