Opis:
This article explores the importance of teachers' conceptions of student learning. In the first part, we focus on the teacher conceptions that stimulate process-oriented instruction. In the second part, we present the results of empirical research on teachers in Slovenian border areas. The principal aim of the research was to determine to what extent the teachers' conceptions of student learning are process-oriented (contrary to traditional orientation), and whether there are any differences between teachers who graduated from different faculties and those that were educated in different teacher education programs.

How knowledge of students’ conceptions of social research can influence the pedagogy of research methods is the focus of this article. This study explains how students’ conceptions of social research changed over the course of a two-semester research programme. Twenty-nine graduate students participated in focus groups, interviews, and open-ended surveys to inform the instructor’s pedagogical decisions in developing the course. Data were analyzed phenomenographically, and the categories that were identified defined changes in their conceptions of research related to affect and attitudes, the processes involved with conducting research, and the end products of their research projects. Pedagogical inferences were derived from the findings, and implications for future research were outlined.

Opis:
The world of nature, understood as a space for human existence, is perceived in different perspectives and categories. From an economic point of view, it can be treated as a source of raw materials and monetary profits, while in a humanistic or ethical perspective as a space for the implementation of human aspirations and expectations. In parallel, concepts of the natural environment have their three perspectives: global, national and local. Each of them reflects different communities, needs, and possibilities of action. In this context, the forest in the perspective of a big city, due to its location between the independence of nature and the influence of human civilization, appears as a specific creation of the natural world. It is more a part of the human life environment than a fully autonomous creation of nature. The proximity of the city, functioning within its borders or borderland makes it dependent on human activities. Even if a person does not shape themselves for their recreational needs, they are exposed to the influence of factors that destroy nature. The integration of the forest with the everyday space of man causes the need to adapt the forest space to the needs of residents. Even if these are ‘forest−friendly’ interventions, from a human point of view (such as thematic paths, boards, trails, viewpoints), they are a disturbance to the natural environment. The scope of the article includes a review of various concepts and visions explaining the nature of the human−natural environment relationship. The main objective was to show the special role of the forest functioning in the space of a big city. The adopted assumptions also allowed to outline the framework of a specific structure of forest perception, which was presented in the final part of the study.

Are we "human zoo"?Review: The Invention of Race. Scientific and Popular Representation, N. Bancel, T. David, D. Thomas (ed.), Routlege: New York-Abington, 2014, ss. 320.The book under review is a collection of articles presenting the functioning of the idea of the human race in the scientific, social and cultural backgrounds. The main purpose is to demonstrate how the concept of race have circulated from the late 18th century in scholarship as well as in popular reception. Thus the authors focus their attention on the so-called ethnological expositions (such as Negro or Eskimo Villages) organized on the occasion of world‘s fairs, today known as “human zoo.” On the social level, this helped support the conviction of the supremacy of the white race.  Czy jesteśmy  „ludzkim zoo”?Recenzja: The Invention of Race. Scientific and Popular Representation, N. Bancel, T. David, D. Thomas (ed.), Routlege: New York-Abington, 2014, ss. 320.Recenzowana praca zawiera zbiór artykułów poświęconych przedstawieniu funkcjonowania koncepcji podziału ludzkości na rasy na szerokim tle: naukowym, społecznym i kulturowym.

Scholarly research into journalists as a subject of study is increasing. Through this, scholars found there is no consensus among journalists about journalistic practice. This is because journalistic roles are discursively recreated, reinterpreted, appropriated, and contested. The coverage of the EU referendum in the UK provides an opportunity to further explore journalistic roles through a focus group of EU and diaspora journalists and academics. The study reveals that participants were critical of the roles played by the British press in the coverage of the referendum and that they were concerned about its effects on their physical and emotional well-being. Hence, they urge media organisations to other support and training to redress these concerns. In conclusion, the study provides an in-depth and intense probing of journalistic roles and their effects in relation to the coverage of the EU referendum.

Online greetings in Russian, Polish and German are analyzed in this article. The author treats greetings as a speech act that helps the addresser remind the addressee about his warm feelings towards him/her on the basis of a particular occasion - for instance, the birthday of the addressee. The author analyzes this speech act in relation to peculiarities of communicative and mental scenarios of the culture to which the speaker belongs. The entirety o f standard speech acts and the combination o f intentions of the speakers form a genre. The genre o f modem online greetings seems contiguous to folklore genres because most of the texts do not have authors. Moreover, these texts move from one Internet site to another. Therefore, there is a wide circle of ‘implementers’ - users. The author distinguishes some typical characteristics of online greetings in three cultures. The emphasis on the figurę o f the speaker and incantation character are typical to Russian greeting texts. Happmess, health and etemal youth are the key objects o f Russian greetin g texts Russian nreet gs are related to the futurę. German greetings are mainly related to the birthday celebration itself. Greetings are often related to the review of a life: it is wished that this day the addressee has madę surę that he/she has lived this year in the right way. Word courage (Mut) is constantly repeated in German greetings while this word is absent in Russian greetings. The figurę of the speaker is marginally expressed in Polish greetings. The sweetness of life is present in Polish greetings, whereas it is not observed in German and Russian texts. May all your dreams come true is a cliche element o f Polish greeting texts. The author relates detected specific features of online greetings with the ideas ot philosophers and historians on the peculiarities o f the expression of national character.

The article is a philosophical analysis of the meaning structure of two competing conceptions of marriage with regard to children’s right to develop their sexual identity. These two conceptions of marriage make different metaphysical assumptions about human nature, which lead to different conceptions about the preconditions of children’s sexual development. The gender diverse conception assumes that human beings are born with a biological sex and they can be integrated persons only when living in terms with it. In order to develop their sexual identity they benefit from male-female interaction within the nuclear family. The genderless conception assumes that children are free to construct their sexual identity according to their inner experience and the main precondition for such an authentic development is an environment free of sexual stereotypes.

Teacher conceptions of assessment influence their implementation of learning-focused assessment initiatives as advocated in many educational policy documents. This mixed-methods study investigated Chinese secondary school teachers’ conceptions of L2 assessment in the context of an exam-oriented educational system which emphasizes English grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. For the quantitative part of the study, survey data were collected to gauge the conceptions of assessment held by 66 senior secondary EFL teachers from six schools in Eastern China. For the qualitative part, case studies of two teachers from schools with different rankings were conducted. Quantitative results showed that the teacher participants as a group agreed most with the view that assessment is to help learning. However, there was a strong association between two factors, that is, the assessment as accurate for examination and teacher/school control factor, and the assessment as accurate for student development factor. The strong association indicated that it may be less likely for the group of teachers to adopt the formative assessment initiatives emphasizing student development as promoted in the English curriculum reform. Qualitative findings further revealed individual differences in the two case study teachers’ conceptions and practices of assessment as well as the interplay among meso-level (e.g., school factor), micro-level (e.g., student factor), and macro-level (e.g., sociocultural and policy contexts) factors in shaping the teachers’ different conceptions and practices of assessment. A situated approach has been proposed to enhance teachers’ assessment literacy.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to outline a twofold change in the American global leadership concept that has been taking place under the Obama Administration: the redefinition of its purpose and of its character. The purpose-transformation has been illustrated in a case study of the American “pivot to Asia”. It means, basically, that the American world leadership, defined as the political and economic order developed by the USA, and grounded in its power and unique position after the Second World War (and/or the Cold War), has turned during Obama’s administration into a instrument aiming at retaining the American privileged position that does not emanate directly from the U.S. power anymore. The charactertransformation implies that the role conceptions of the American world leadership, have been modified or, as in one case, abandoned, in order to adjust to new circumstances. As a result, the US leadership has become more inclusive, international-institutions-centered, and reluctant to military engagement.

The purpose of this study was to describe processes and methods suggested by science teachers for changing alternative conceptions about genetics. The study focused on a group of 17 (8 male and 9 female) science teachers who were graduate level students or completed a graduate program. Hence, the group was the case of this study. Qualitative data of the study was collected by detailed lesson plans prepared by the participants for overcoming two alternative conceptions about genetics (chromosome is an organelle and DNA is found as a whole set in the body) and follow-up interviews. The data was analyzed by descriptive analysis. The findings showed that the case group of this study represented fragmented processes to overcome the alternative conceptions. At the same time, they did not provide methods or processes in line with conceptual change models. These findings mean that science and technology teachers who have completed a graduate program or are currently graduate students of science education are not able to plan coherent teaching on alternative conceptions or are not aware of conceptual change processes and methods.

Opis:
This article analyses the concept of diversity in education in the context of Eastern Europe, and how its meaning might differ from that used in Western-focused literature. The study explores the ways in which faculty interpret diversity based on their experience of teaching contexts as being homogenous, situational, or internationalized, for which interviews have been conducted with university educators in Eastern Europe. In a phenomenographic analysis, three different approaches to how teachers engage with diversity in the classroom were identified: (1) exposing students to diversity as an external phenomenon through teaching; (2) focusing on the diversities among students in a given classroom and learning how to navigate them; (3) using the diversities present in the classroom to facilitate inclusive teaching and learning. We argue that the meanings and intentions associated with the understanding of diversity are constitutive of how faculty see their role in facilitating student learning in diverse classroom, and especially of their strategies to address sensitive and controversial topics. Finally, we discuss the implications for teaching practice and academic development, in addition to the relevance of diversity in Eastern European classrooms.

The main aim of the article is to show the possible relations between attitudes toward globalization as described by Senejko and Łoś and the specificity of identity styles as described by Berzonsky. The participants were 601 people aged 16-26 – school students, university students, and working people from the Dolnośląskie Voivodeship, Poland. We used the following instruments: The World–I Questionnaire (measuring attitudes toward globalization) and the Identity Style Inventory (ISI-5). The results obtained in correlational analyses and cluster analyses show that people with a strongly manifested accepting attitude toward globalization are characterized mainly by the informational style and the least strongly by the normative and diffuse-avoidant styles. As the results showed, the critical attitude toward globalization occurs in the form of two clusters: (1) with strong critical and accepting attitudes (people with this configuration of attitudes exhibit a strongly expressed informational identity style and commitment and a weakly expressed normative style); (2) with strong critical and fearful attitudes (individuals with this configuration of attitudes mainly exhibit the normative identity style and commitment). People with a strongly expressed fearful attitude toward globalization typically use the diffuse-avoidant or normative styles, while the least strongly expressed identity style in this group is the informational style and commitment. Cluster analysis made it also possible to distinguish people with a distanced attitude toward globalization, characterized by fairly strong identity commitment.
